Introduction

A quiet corner of the Holywood Army Base For those men and women of our Armed
has become a poignant place of pilgrimage Forces and the Royal Ulster Constabulary
for the bereaved families of the Security George Cross who are remembered in this
Forces personnel, killed in the Troubles in book, the price they paid was the highest.

around the world over the last 50 years. Memorial Custodian
After a great deal of planning and Palace Barracks Memorial Garden
designing, in late 1993 the first www.palacebarracksmemorialgarden.co.uk
foundations and memorial for the one-
and-a-half acre site of the memorial garden
in Palace Barracks was laid. The memorial
stones themselves are all made from South
African polished granite and engraved with
the serviceman or servicewoman’s name
and their Regimental badge.
I designed and have maintained and run
the Palace Barracks Memorial Garden,
Holywood on a voluntary basis for the last
28 years.
My aim over the years has been to never let
those servicemen and women who lost
their lives in the service of our country be
forgotten and that they should always be
remembered with honour and pride.

Operation Banner

Operation Banner was the longest deployment in British Military
history. which lasted from 1969 to 2007
Throughout the years the commitment of the men and women of our
Armed Forces was unstinting. The courage and sacrifice of more than
300.000 personnel who served in the Province on Op Banner will never
be forgotten by there Families, Friends and Comrades.
More than 1000 Armed Forces personnel died and 6,116 were wounded
during the 38 years of Operation Banner. Among this number, 763
servicemen and women were killed as a direct result of terrorism
including 651 Army and Royal Marines, One Royal Navy serviceman,
50 Former members of the Ulster Defence Regiment and Royal Irish
Regiment; 10 Territorial Army Soldiers and 51 Military Personnel killed
outside Northern Ireland, including 4 members of the Royal Air Force
and 3 Ministry of Defence Civilians.

peace while maintaining law and order, under the constant threat of
attacks against them either at their homes or on duty.

20 Former Officers died as a result of terrorism

Royal Ulster Constabulary

The RUC stone in the Memorial Garden and the George Cross
following pages, are dedicated to those officers of
the Royal Ulster Constabulary GC who paid the
ultimate price in the name of their country, during the
bloodiest thirty-odd years of domestic British history.

In November 1999 Her Majesty The Queen conferred the George
Cross on the Royal Ulster Constabulary for Gallantry. A total of 300
RUC officers have been murdered during the Troubles. The IRA has
killed 277, the INLA and IPLO 12 and loyalist terrorists eight. Three
were murdered by unknown groups. In addition, four officers were
killed by the security forces by mistake and over 9,000 injured during
the course of their duties.
Terrorist groups have bombed, shot and beaten RUC officers to death,
sometimes killing relatives and other civilians in the process.
Levels of stress-related illness have been higher than in any other police
force: almost 70 officers have committed suicide, many of them with
RUC-issued weapons.
Here at Palace Barracks I have great pride and admiration for the men
and women of the Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross and the
high price they have paid serving in Northern Ireland. A memorial
stone, bearing the Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross crest is
dedicated in their honour in the memorial garden, where I proudly fly
their flag.

memory of the dead.
Every village in France has a well cared-for memorial listing the names of
the villagers who died in two world wars. The United Kingdom still observes
Remembrance Sunday with the Monarch paying homage at the Cenotaph in
Whitehall on behalf of her subjects.
Ceremonies of remembrance may be public and religious or private and
agnostic. What is never forgotten is the debt owed to those who laid down their
lives for their country.
Our comrades in military and civilian service remembered here in this memorial
book who died in Northern Ireland live on in our minds and in the memories of
those they loved ‘Their names liveth forevermore’
We remember these men and women for their youthfulness, courage, and their
character for those who new them, they will always be part of their lives.
