3 How To Use This Book This Pupil Planner has been designed to form a vital part of our home school partnership. The aim is that it should come in and out of school on a daily basis in order to encourage home learning and to develop the independence of your child. Reading Record Section Use this section to record the title of the reading material and time spent reading. There is also a section for parents/carers and children to write comments and thoughts on the reading material. We ask that your child should read on average 10 minutes per night. Whether this happens every night or in blocks throughout the week is up to you and your child. Reading at home makes a huge difference to the progress of a child so naturally we encourage you to do this as often as possible so your child fosters a love of reading. Please write a comment in your child’s contact book whenever they read at home. Look, Cover, Write, Check – Spellings These pages are to keep the list of words for you to learn for weekly spellings. Look at the word carefully for a few moments and say it to yourself, then practice writing it on a scrap of paper. Cover the word so you cannot see it. Do not copy it. Write the word in your best joined handwriting. Attempt the word on 3 different days, not all on the same day. Check your work to see if you got it correct.
4 Salfords School House System We believe that a positive house system, which promotes the philosophy of team spirit, fair play and togetherness will enhance the academic curriculum and provide a broader experience for our pupils. At Salfords, all children and staff belong to a house and over the course of the year take part in house competitions and events. Children earn points for their house by exhibiting the values that our school community feel deserves recognition. Each house represents a main value which matches the famous figure the house is named after. The children were integral to the design of the house system and chose the values that each house represents. The House System names relate to individuals within one of the school’s TEAMS (Technology, English, the Arts, Mathematics and Science) disciplines: Redgrave (RED): Sir Steve Redgrave - is a retired British rower who won gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games from 1984 to 2000. He has also won three Commonwealth Games gold medals and nine World Rowing Championships golds. Redgrave House’s value of ‘Respect’ celebrates the respect we show to our fellow competitors and peers and the value we place on other’s contributions. Nightingale (GREEN): Florence Nightingale - was a celebrated English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale House’s value of ‘Kindness’ celebrates the supportive and kind way in which we treat each other at Salfords. Brunel (BLUE): Isambard Brunel - was an English mechanical and civil engineer who is considered "one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history". Brunel’s house value of ‘Excellence’ celebrates our community’s pursuit of excellence in everything we do from academic achievement to behaviour. Rowling (YELLOW): Joanne Rowling is a British novelist best known as the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series. Rowling’s house value is ‘Courage’. This value celebrates the virtue of courage in the face of adversity and recognises that to face the challenges in life will require determination and perseverance.

47 How can you support your child in their numeracy work? We encourage the children to understand numbers and the number system rather than employ methods that they can use but not understand. This may involve the children using methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division that seem rather long and detailed but they encourage understanding of numbers. Encourage your child to be positive about maths. Have fun with practical activities.
