most hockey fans know us for our
protective headgear. But if you
stripped a hockey player down to
his underwear, you'd find we were
very big in shoulders, hips, knees
and shins as well. In fact, Jofa is
the fastest-growing protective

(Which is not to say that .
we've ignored the offensive side of

BOB KENT President & Chief Executive Officer

As President and Chief Executive Officer of the Flames, Bob Kent is the man
in charge of the overall operation of the organization. He is well qualified by
virtue of background and experience to handle this assignment.

A 29-year veteran of arena management, Kent has extensive experience in
hockey dating back to 1958 when he began his association with the Eastern
League.

He worked on the original proposal that led Atlanta's successful bid for a
National Hockey League franchise in 1971 and has been involved with Flames
management since his return to Atlanta in 1975.

Kent also is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Omni. In that
capacity he has thoroughly revitalized the financial and operational aspects of
the arena . Under his direction, The Omni schedule of events has increased
dramatically during the past four years. The Omni now has more than 225 events
per year, inclLJding sports events, concerts, wrestling, circus, ice show, and
other varied attractions . As a result, The Omni has become a solid success.

Kent has achieved national recognition in arena management and also is
regarded as a leading authority in the design, construction and operation of
such facilities. He has served as a consultant on more than 30 projects
throughout the United States.

Kent is a Past President of the International As<>ociation of Arena Managers,
the professional organization of arena/auditorium/exhibit hall executives, and
has received numerous honors from that organization, including honorary
lifetime membership.

Bob and his wife, Nancy, have two married daughters and four grandchildren.

AL MACNEIL Coach

Al MacNeil begins his first season as coach of the Flames and he brings to
Atlanta a vast wealth of experience and a rich tradition of winning hockey
games.

During his eleven year association with the Montreal Canadiens Organization,
}' all they did was capture seven Stanley Cup Championships while establishing

themselves as the dominant team in the sport. MacNeil served as their Director
of Player Personnel for the past two seasons, but it's holding the coaching reins
that really makes his blood stir.

He began his coaching career back in 1968 when the Canadiens made him the
boss of their top farm club, the Houston Apollos. The Apollos moved to
Montreal to become the Voyageurs and MacNeil remained as coach for the next
season and a half before taking over the Canadiens bench in December of 1970.
All he did there was lead them to the Stanley Cup, de-throning the defending
champion Boston Bruins in the process.

For the next six seasons, MacNeil piloted the Nova Scotia Voyageurs
finishing in first place four times and winning the Calder Cup as the American
Hockey League Champions on three occasions. He was coach of the AHL
All-Star Team during the 1971-72 campaign and during his tenure with the
Voyageurs had a hand in the development of current Flames Guy Chouinard,
Ken Houston and David Shand.· In addition, he served as an assistant coach of
Team Canada when they defeated the Soviet Squad in 1976.
Shared by @HockeyMagazines
MacNeil was no slouch as a player, either, serving eight seasons as an NHL
defenseman with Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, Pittsburgh and the New York
Rangers before shedding the blades in 1968 to begin the second phase of his
hockey career.

MacN-eil, wife Norma and children Allison and Allister make their home in

Marietta. VP & General Manager

CLIFF FLETCHER

Throughout the National Hockey League, there are few executives that are as
widely respected as the Flames' General Manager, Cliff Fletcher.

He has been the captain of the Atlanta ship since they entered the league in
1972 and the pivotal force behind their growth from a struggling expansion team
to a club that is on the verge of capturing that first Stanley Cup .

An astute judge of hockey talent, Fletcher's selections in the annual NHL
draft have been consistently productive and two of them, Eric Vail and Willi
Plett, have captured the Calder trophy which is annually awarded to the league's
premier rookie.

It's in the trading market, however, that he has earned a reputation as perhaps
the shrewdest of all the hockey fleshpeddlars. In past seasons he has acquired
such players as Bob MacMillan, Jean Provonost, Bill Clement and Bob Murdoch
who have already made tremendous contributions to the success of the club.

Fletcher's biggest trade, though, occurred last March when he shocked the
Hockey world by swapping five players to the Chicago Black Hawks in exchange
for Phil Russell, Ivan Boldirev, and Darcy Rota. It was one of the biggest trades
in the history of the NHL and rapidly paid dividends to the Flames as all three
men made their presence felt down the stretch.

Fletcher began nis professional hockey career in 1950 when he joined the
Montreal Canadians' Organization as the manager of a junior team . He worked
closely with Sam PoHack, the Canadiens' former General Manager for the next
ten years before moving to St. Louis in 1967 where he served as their Chief
Scout for Eastern Canada . In 1969, the Blues appointed him Assistant General
Manager,, a position he held until the end of the 1970-71 season.

Cliff and his wife "Boots" have two children , Chuck .who plays in the Georgia
Amateur Hockey Association and daughter Kristy .

JIGGS MCDONALD . ·/

Voice of the Flames

The constant, non-stop action of professional hockey makes it perhaps the

most challenging of all sports to announce and the Flames are fortunate to have

a man who is considered to be among the very best at this diffcult task.

"Jiggs" McDonald begins his 13th season of National Hockey League

play-by-play and his eighth as the only "voice" that the Flames have ever had.

Widely respected among his peers, he has probably done more to spread hockey

knowledge and goodwill throughout the Southeast than any other person.

Born in Ayre, Ontario, he worked for three radio stations in Ontario before

being selected as the play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Kings in 1967.

It was in Los Angeles that he acquired his famous nickname. He was known as

Ken McDonald at the time and his boss, Jack Kent Cooke, said he needed a

name that everyone would remember. Ken remembered deep into his childhood

that buddies had called him "Jiggs" because of his resemblance to the

comic-strip character. Cooke said great and he's been Jiggs ever since.

One of the founding fathers of the NHL Broadcasters Association, Jiggs

begins his third season as President of the organization which is certainly a

tribute to his stature in the business.

As if hockey play-by-play, speaking appearances and broadcast sales didn't

occupy enough of his time, Jiggs also serves as the weekend sports voice of

WSB-TV.

He and wife Marilyn and daughters Kelly and Susan make their home in

Marietta. Assistant General Manager

DAVID POILE

David Poile has been a member of the Flames' Organization since the very Shared by @HockeyMagazines Assistant Coach
beginning back in 1972 and he is now in his fourth year as the Assistant General
Manager. His many duties were expanded even further this past summer to
include the supervision of both the Public Relations and Marketing
Departments. In addition, he serves as the Director of Player Personnel for
Atlanta's Birmingham Farm Club, coordinates the minor officials assignments
for home games while logging thousands of miles each winter scouting talent at
the professional level.

He comes from a sound hockey heritage as his father "Bud" played in the
NHL for six seasons, was the General Manager of both the Flyers and Canucks,
the President of the WHA and currently serves as the President of the Central
Hockey League. An uncle, Don Poile, also saw NHL duty as a player with the
Detroit Red Wings.

David was born in Toronto while his father was playing in the NHL. The family
then moved to Edmonton, Alberta where his father coached there for some ten
years before moving to San Francisco. There David attended High School and
met the young lady who would later become his wife.

His playing ability won him a hockey scholarship to Northeastern University
in Boston where he played for five years. He was team captain and Most
Valuable Player for two years, leading goal scorer in the East during his Senior
year and named to the E.C.A.C. first team . After graduation, he attended the
Vancouver Canucks training camp that fall and then joined the Flames' front
office staff.

David, wife Elizabeth, and son Brian make their home in Marietta.

TIM ECCLESTONE

One of the most important members of a professional hockey organization is
the assistant coach and Tim Ecclestone begins his second season in that
capacity for the Flames .

Not only does he provide much help to the head coach during practice, but
the assistant is also a regular fixture in the press box during games where he
plots strategy and looks for chinks in the opposition's armor.

Ecclestone assumed his present position following a fine eleven year career
in the NHL where he saw action in St. Louis, Detroit and Toronto before being
traded to the Flames during the 1974-75 season. Long regarded as one of the
premier penalty-killers in the game, Tim got his start with the New York Ranger
organization when they selected him second (9th overall) in the 1964 Amateur
draft. He was traded to St. Louis in 1967 and played a key role as the Blues went
to the Stanley Cup finals in the Springs of '68, '69 and '70. He put together
back-to-back 18-goal seasons in his first two full seasons with Detroit and
finished hi·s playing career with 126 goals and 233 assists.

Tim is one of the best golfers in the organization when he's not busy looking
after business at Timothy-John's, the night club which he co-owns in Sandy
Springs. He and his family, wife Sue and children Mark and Sandi, make their
home in Marietta.

person responsible for the change was former Canuck

showed he knew his way around on the ice. He scored

brought a smile to the face of MacNeil, a coach known
to stress defense and players who can play at both
ends of the ice.

After those same eight games, Lever was also a plus
player, something not accomplished very often while
with the Canucks.

"We weren't much on statistics up there," Lever said.
"It's hard to stay on the plus side when you're getting
wiped out 7-1 and 7-2."

And 60 games into the season, Lever had 25 goals
and 21 assists, totals which put him on track for his
second-best season in the National Hockey League.
His best year occured in the 1974-75 season when he
had 38 goals and 30 assists. The 5-foot-11,
185-pounder was the Canucks first round draft choice
(3rd overall) in the 1972 NHL amateur draft. Since that
time, he has scored 186 goals and assisted on 221
others in his seven-plus seasons with the Canucks, the
only team he had played for in his professional career,
prior to the trade.

And the fact he had played for the Canucks for so
long somewhat bothered Lever when he was traded.
After all, in the north city where hockey is king, he was
the team captain and was known as "Mr. Hustle of the
Canucks."

" I still don't know why I was traded," Lever said.
"Other than the fact (coach) Harry Neale likes big,
strong wingers and I didn't fit in."

"But maybe it was for the best. I took a lot of the
responsibility for the losses, being team captain and
after being there so long.

" I had almost made up my mind before the season
started to play out my option and become a free agent,
but they brought in a bunch of young players and we
started playing well and I got caught up in the
enthusiasm, so I signed a new contract."

fresh air must be nice." -

"I think that's a big reason why there are so many
injuries to guys in Vancouver this time of year. It seems

you're always either on a plane, in an airport, or a hotel.
There's no time to get out and get any fresh air,
especially when you're on the ro~d.

"I think 40 percent of the losses up there could be
blamed on all the traveling you have to do. There have
been other years, just like this one, when the team gets
off to a good start and then around January comes the
slump and a bunch of injuries."

"It's too bad for the people in Vancouver because
they support the team so well. They deserve better then
what they've gotten. It's hard for them to look and see
how well a team like Buffalo has done - a city that
came into the league at the same time - and see how
poorly Vancouver has done.

"And there's been so many changes there. They're
doing it again this season. Now, they've traded away a
lot of the youth and gone to older players. I guess
they're looking for a contender right away. It seems
everything has gone to shambles."

"I can't complain, because I was treated very well
there, but I'm glad for the change, especially getting a
chance to play here. I had heard trade rumors early in
the season and thought I might be going to Minnesota,
but I'm glad I didn't."

But while he has been able to fit in with his new
teammates and likes the weather and the travel
schedule here in Atlanta, it's hard for Lever to figure
why the team isn't supported better.

"This team could own Vancouver," Lever said. "It's
going to be hard for me to play in a city where hockey
isn't No. 1. I've always played in Canadian cities. It
must be hard to play in front of 6-7,000 people all the
time, but I guess the new schedule has a lot to do with
it. I understand the Islanders, Flyers and Rangers draw
better here, but I think people are seeing how far the
league has come in just a year."
