The Finalists’ Compilation
Album is recorded in our own SCJS
Studios. Each of the 2020 Finalists
sang the 2 songs they will be per-
forming at the Final. Only one of
the songs will be used in the al-
bum but at the Final, both songs
will be used in order to provide a
recap the performances, just be-
fore voting begins.

After John had “dumped” the
tracks for each song into the com-
puter, Anthony Wright recorded
the vocals, engineering the 20 re-
cordings and mastering them.

On the following pages, under each photo of the
Finalists “at the mic”, we have listed the songs they re-
corded and the name of the artists who originally record-
ed the versions that the Finalists sang.

SCJS Studios Productions

While we have not been able to provide any live audiences for our contestants to perform for, we have been able
to facilitate their experience in the recording industry. Many past and present contestants were able to join Anthony
Wright in studio for personal writing and recording projects.

SCJS Studios is pleased to have partnered with Anthony in helping young
artists achieve their dreams of recording their own music. Anthony co-writes
most of the songs with these up and coming performers, generously sharing all
of his songwriting experience with them. He is also a gifted videographer and
many of the artists who took part in the writing and recording projects chose
to do promotional videos as well. We also set up a label, SCJS Music, to help the
contestants with the release of their projects.

The Season 14
Virtual Finale

The Grand Finale of Season
14 was very different from
any of the past 13 Finals.
So much should have hap-
pened but didn’t because
of COVID-19. As it had in
Season 13, the event should
have begun with a fabulous
meal at Pearson Convention
Center.

The 10 Finalists should have opened the show together onstage with The SCJS Orchestra, the live band that accom-
panies them annually. Season 13’s 1st place winners should have performed while the votes were being counted and
the Finalists should have signed autographs, seated together in front of the red carpet at the “Wall of Fame”. Last
Season’s Finalists went from playing for crowds like this at Casa to Alentejo (bottom right) to this… >

There was no group song to start off the evening and the 2020 SCJS Orchestra never got to perform the 20 songs
they had learned especially for the event. Instead, the Finalists were carefully scheduled to enter the building one at a
time to sing along to the backing tracks with no one else in the room but the photographer and the sound, lighting &
video crew.

The Season 14 Virtual Finale

Only after the first Finalist had left, could
the next one enter the empty hall at Casa do
Alentejo Community Centre. Instead of sign-
ing autographs seated together at the Wall of
Fame, they signed piles of magazines on their
own, thoroughly sanitizing both before and
afterwards.

The judges weren’t able to sit together either, as they normally would. Instead, they watched from a separate room,
each seated at their own table, at least 8 feet away from one another.

The broadcast set-up in the studio was not quite as
streamlined as it would eventually become for Season
15 but, inspired by the determination to see Season 14
through to its proper conclusion, everything worked out
amazingly well. Joe Carreiro took care of the sound for
the stream and Eddie Vallejo Heredia handled the video.

As husband and wife, only John and Lisa, upstairs in the The Singing Contest 2021 121

Back On Track

Parallel to The Singing Contest, SCJS Studios is home to the Back on Track program where we
offer audio and video instruction to youth in the child welfare system and beyond.

Students Jake and Zack had the opportunity to put their knowledge into action, gaining work experience with the
contest. Then the pandemic hit and lessons had to move online.

Once the Covid numbers had
gone down a bit, Zack, who is
working with Eddie to develop his
own mini-series, finally got to get
together with cast and crew to
film the pilot episode.

Citytv Toronto) for updates on the mini-series Jayden & Kayden.

In the summer Jake & Zack joined John at The Singing Contest 2021 143
the Mississauga Walk of Fame ceremony.
Invited by MPP Rudy Cuzzetto, Jake had

Jake, who as a kid hated going to school and actual-
ly got kicked out of multiple schools for skipping out, is
now hoping to go to college. He also got to fulfill one
of his dreams by writing and recording
a song with Anthony. Once the song was
finished, Eddie directed Jake in a video
for the song. Check out the finished pro-
ject here.

Letter from Jake

I remember when I first joined the studio back in 2016, I just wanted to get some lessons to work on the areas of music
I was weak in, you know, just for fun. At that point, I was involved in the wrong crowds and I never thought of music
as an actual future career-wise for me. So, I’d always skip out on classes for foolish reasons, and I was just in a very bad
place. Then back on track came along, and it was the first time I was ever able to write my own verse without hating it.
And the crazy thing is, I can still feel my own emotions I put into those lyrics.... before that verse I was never able to do
that... never. Then it just all clicked to me. This is where I should be, in a studio doing what I love. I just remember being
at my last party thinking to myself, “why am I here? I have the opportunity to be in a studio doing what I love and I’m
going to blow it away for this?”. That’s when everything changed... the second I reminded myself how my idol had noth-
ing, not even a opportunity anywhere near to close as mine. So nothing should be stopping me. Also, I’d like to thank
the sponsors. I wouldn’t have any of these opportunities, and I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.

Letter from Jake’s mother

As a single mother of a special needs child, who also has health issues, I’ve encountered a lot of struggles. One of the
brightest spots in my child’s life and mine has been watching my child’s dream of music and the passion for learning more
about it grow. John Santos has opened a gateway for my child in a world where nothing would have been possible. We
were always told that my child would only have possibilities in a simple environment due to the fact that my child Jake is
special needs. With the caring and generosity of all the sponsors that John has built up, who have been so helpful in giving
children an outlook on life that they would never have been exposed to if it wasn’t for John and everything that he offers
the special children. He has belief and faith that these children can do things that other people would never have taken
the time to notice. As a mom, I am so proud of my child for everything Jake has accomplished as he’s learned and grown
so much in the time that he spent with John and the people John has exposed him to and the experiences that he’s learn-
ed. John and his staff/crew continue to inspire and give hope and confidence to these children in a world where these
children have been picked on and bullied and made to feel devalued. John has definitely given them a bright outlook on
their futures. Life is about following your dreams. Thanks to John, everyone’s dreams matter.

Back On Track This is a follow up to my previous letter that I wrote
some time last year. I felt the need to bring you up to
