Shared by @HockeyMagazinesCAPITAL CE NTRE

The Capital Centre is the product of Abe Pollin's desire
to provide the Washington metropolitan area with an arena
for the future.

In just 15 months, the farmlands of Landover, Maryland
were converted into the site of the most dramatic, inovative
arena in America.

Capital Centre seats 17,962 for hockey and affords every
spectator a seat no further than 200 feet from center ice.
Thus, every spectator is within comfortable viewing dis-
tance of an estimated 300 sports and entertainment events
per year ... and the entertainment has ranged from Frank
Sinatra to the Grateful Dead, from Bob Dylan to the circus,
and from NBA basketball to the Lippizan Stallions during
the first year.

And even the spectators in the most distant locations
have a front row seat for every event, via Telscreen, the
most revolutionary and unique scoreboard/entertainment
system of any indoor arena in the world.

This multi-million dollar system is comprised of four
12-foot by 16-foot screens which provide dramatic full-
color closeups and instant replays. Telscreen can be a mode
of entertainment in itself- perfect for halftime shows and
interviews.

Forty luxury sky suites are clustered along the upper
levels of the arena, with private elevators serving these
luxurious entertainment and viewing areas. Each suite
includes a reception area, powder room, wet bar, wall-to-
wall carpeting, closed circuit and commercial television and
a panoramic view of the arena floor.

The Capital Club, for season-subscribers, is a restaurant
capable of seating more than 300 people. The Showcase
Restaurant seats 188 for dinner and can be converted to a
community theater seating approximately 400 people.

The single-level concourse and absence of interior
walkways to hinder spectator's views make the arena
practical as well as beautiful. Most importantly, Washington
now has its own arena, a facility which has brought NHL
hockey and NBA basketball to the Nation's Capital. Shows
covering the entire entertainment and cultural spectrums
make "the arena for the future" a showcase worthy of the
21st century.

President

Abe Pollin has brought in a number of long shots in his day, but
perhaps the longest was acquiring a National Hockey League franchise
for Washington. No less a professional than Jimmy the Greek called it
600-1 against.

But Pollin did it. He personally delivered his application to the NHL
office in Montreal on the final day they were accepted, made his
presentation of the Board of Governors at the May 1972 meetings ,
spent five days in a Montreal hotel convincing the NHL powers that
Washington was the best location from among the 11 applicants for the
two expansion franchises , and was awarded the team on the condition
that a suitable arena was available by 1974-75.

The arena Pollin envisioned would house his hockey team and his
Bullets basketball team which had been playing in Baltimore . Bickering
and bureaucratic delays over who would build the arena led Pollin to a
characteristic decision- he would build the arena himself.

Thus, began the $18,000,000 Capital Centre. An ambitious building
schedule began in the fall of 1972. Two years plus is the normal
building time for a facility such as Capital Centre, but Pollin aimed for
15 months from gound breaking to opening. And again, he delivered.
The building opened for basketball in early December 1973 and the
Bullets christened the building with a division-winning NBA season.
Capital Centre will seat 17,962 for hockey.

The 50 year old Pollin was born in Philadelphia but has lived in the
Washington area since 1931 . He joined his father's construction firm in
1945 following his graduation from George Washington University. He
began his own firm in 1957 and since has won several awards for design
and construction.

In 1964, Pollin joined Arnold Heft and Earl Foreman in purchasing

became the sole owner of the NBA franchise. He is regarded as one of
the NBA's most progressive and respected owners and is quickly making
the same mark in the National Hockey League .

Pollin and his wife, the former Irene Kerchek, have two sons-
Robert (24) and James (16) and reside in Bethesda, Maryland.

JERRY SACHS
Executive Vice President

The man who runs the day-to-day operation of Capital Centre's
multi-faceted organization holds the title of President of Capital Centre.
In addition, he serves as executive vice president of Washington's entry
in the National Hockey League .

As Abe Pollin's right-hand man, Jerry Sachs oversees all aspects of
the new sports and entertainment complex, a task for which he has
been well-versed by an extensive background in sports and business.

The 39 year old native of Baltimore has been Executive Vice
President of the Washington Bullets since 1970 and assumed a similar
position with the Capitals this year: He joined Abe Pollin's organization
following a two-year stay as Coordinator of Sports Activities for
Coca-Cola USA in Atlanta.

Prior to his affiliation with Coca-Cola, Sachs served as Public
Relations Director for the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles . Thus ,
his sports background encompasses more than just basketball.

Sachs' sports administration career began in 1959 when he worked
in the Orioles' public relations department. He became Assistant Public
Relations Director in 1960 and assumed the head position in 1962.

He is now the administrative head of the nation's most modern
indoor facility , the Capital Centre, and has had to live with and solve
the problems inherent in such a vast undertaking.

Sachs, his wife Joyce, their son
Gene (12) and daughter Barbara (9)
live in Bethesda, Maryland.

General Manager

Milt Schmidt, Hall of Fame player and the general manager who
built the current Boston Bruins powerhouse, is the man Capitals' owner
Abe Pollin chose to put together his Washington entry in the National
Hockey League.

Prior to joining the Capitals, Schmidt spent his entire NHL career
with the Bruins-a span of 37 years broken only by a three year stint in
the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.

Since taking over the Capitals, Schmidt has spent most of his time
getting together his players for the opening season. He signed his first
six amateur draft choices-including Greg Joly, the first pick in the
entire draft-lured Tom Williams back from the WHA, purchased John
Adams from San Diego, Andre Peloffy from the Rangers, and Bill
Lesuk from Los Angeles. He has acquired Yvon Bilodeau from
Philadelphia and veteran Doug Mohns from Atlanta.

In addition, Schmidt has signed almost all of his expansion draft
choices including Denis Dupere who had been rumored to be very close
to jumping to the WHA.

Along with acquiring players, Schmidt has finalized working
agreements with Richmond of the American League and Dayton of the
International League.

Coming out of Kitchener, Ontario Schmidt was signed to a
professional contract by Art Ross, coach of the Bruins, and assigned to
Providence of the American League in 1936. In Providence he was
reunited with former junior linemates Woody Dumart and Bob Bauer.
Owing to their common German heritage, their coach, Battleship

Shared by @HockeyMagazinesLeduc, dubbed the trio "The Sauerkrauts", a name altered to read "The
Kraut Line" which was to stick with the three throughout their career.

The Krauts played together until Bauer's retirement in 1947 except
for three years in the service-they enlisted and served together-and
Ross was heard to mention during that period that his lacking offense
could be found "somewhere in France or Germany."

Schmidt, the centerman of the trio , played for 16 years, was the
NHL all star center three times , won the Hart Trophy as MVP in 19 50-51 ,
scored 229 career goals, played on two Stanley Cup winners, and led
the NHL in scoring in 1939-40. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in
June 1961. Like Ted Williams in baseball, what should have been his
most productive years were spent in military service.

Retiring as a player in 1954, Schmidt took over as coach of the
Bruins. He served as assistant general manager between coaching stints ,
and took over as the Bruins general manager in 1967 .

In his five years as GM, Schmidt's teams won two Stanley
Cups-their first wins since 1940-41 when Schmidt, the player, was
largely responsible. Perhaps the biggest step towards the recent success
was taken in 1967 when Schmidt swapped Pit Martin, Gil Marotte and
minor league goaler Jack Norris to Chicago for Phil Esposito, Ken
Hodge , and Fred Stanfield. Esposito has won the Art Ross Trophy as
scoring champion five of the last six seasons, Hodge has averaged 35
goals a year as a Bruin, and Stanfield was a 25 goal man before being
traded for the Bruins current goalkeeper, Gilles Gilbert. Other players
Schmidt brought to Boston to form the powerhouse include John
McKenzie, Carol Vadnais, Gerry Cheevers, Ron Murphy , Glen Sather ,
and Eddie Shack.

As a player Schmidt combined finesse and clever stick handling with
hard skating and body checking. He gave 100% every minute and never
gave up. As a coach he demanded the same dedication of his players
and as the Bruins general manager, he put together a team that
exemplified his attitudes . In putting the Washington Capitals team
together, he will be looking to following the same formula . It is a
proven winner.

Schmidt and his wife, Marie, live in Tantallon, Maryland. They have
two children-a son, Con, and a daughter, Mrs. George Sommer, Jr.

Shared by @HockeyMagazinesLEFTY McFADDEN
Assistant General Manager

Lefty McFadden, former vice-president and general manager of the
Dayton Gems of the International Hockey League, serves as assistant
general manager of the Washington Capitals.

The 51-year-old McFadden works primarily in an administrative
capacity while Milt Schmidt spends much of his time on the road. He
has been well-versed for these duties by his background in Dayton.

McFadden organized the Dayton team in 1964 and led the Gems to
six NHL championships. Seventeen of his players have gone on to play
in the NHL, AHL and WHA.

McFadden's administrative qualifications, aside from the success his
teams have enjoyed on the ice and at the gate, include a background in
sports journalism, public relations and advertising. He has been a sports
writer and columnist for the Salt Lake City Tribune and the Dayton
Daily News , sports director of WONE radio in Dayton and owned an

/

/ advertising agency for 12 years.
McFadden and his wife Chris have

three daughters-Sharon, Michelle and
Ava . Lefty, Chris and Ava reside in
Tantallon, Maryland.

JIMMY ANDERSON
Coach
Jimmy Anderson became the first coach
of the Capitals on May 31 when he reached
a two-year agreement with Milt Schmidt.
The 43 year old Anderson has a hockey background that dates back
to 1952 when he moved into professional hockey as a young left wing
up from the Shawinigan Falls Cataracts.

(Continued on next page)
11

He got his start in professional hockey with the Detroit organization
when he impressed Red Wings officials enough in a try-out to earn a
slot on their Edmonton team. He spent two seasons with Edmonton in
the Western League and then moved to Springfield when Eddie Shore
purchased his contract.

Anderson won the AHL rookie of the year award in his first season
with the Indians and played all but one of the next 15 years in
Springfield- long enough to set many AHL records and become one of
the league's all-time high scorers.

A brief stint in the National League in 1967-68 lasted seven
games-long enough for Jimmy to score his lone NHL goal in a 17 year
playing career ... against Ed Giacomin, at that.

Following his playing career, Anderson coached Springfield for one
season, scouted for Los Angeles in 1969-70, coached Oklahoma City
and Dayton for a season each. His three coaching seasons resulted in
three playoff appearances for his teams.

Last year he served as chief scout for the Boston Bruins.

Among the players Anderson has helped to develop have been Greg
Sheppard, Dave Forbes, and Chris Oddleifson.

Born in Pembroke, Ontario, Jimmy, his wife Ginny, and their three
children-Kirn (18), Jim (17), and Billy (15) - live in West Springfield,
Mass.

From 1970 to 1972 Sullivan served in a similar role for the Boston
Bruins. When his contract expired, he decided to join Milt Schmidt in
Washington .

Always known for his aggressive and fierce competitive spirit,
Sullivan was a National Hockey League player for nine years with the
Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks and New York Rangers. He later coached
the Rangers and served as a scout.

When the National Hockey League expanded in 1967-68, he was
named coach of the new Pittsburgh Penguins. He also served as a scout
for them before being hired by the Bruins in 1970.
