Clubs and societies are designed to help develop a student's talent or skill. They are of a
recreational and educational nature. They have been created to help keep students active and
interested.
One of the most crucial advantages of a good school club is that it broadens students' areas
of interest. When students learn new skills, their self-esteem grows. This allows them to be
exposed to new career options.
Another great advantage of clubs is socialization. Students are able to share their interests
with others and make new friends. School clubs are made to keep young teenagers busy and keep
them away from both drugs and alcohol. It is believed that students who keep themselves busy
through activities are less likely to indulge in undesirable activities and suffer from depression.
This can also enhance their academic performance and reduce the problem of truancy.
Many school clubs encourage students to interact with one another. This enables them to
benefit from positive relationships. Sometimes students have difficulty in opening up to their
parents or teachers, but may find it easier to speak to their peers.

Passage 1
The locust is a species of grasshoppers with short feelers. Under favourable
conditions, locusts breed rapidly. During the swarming stage they gather together to form
a large swami. Flying over an area, a swarm of locusts consisting of billions of the insects,
can cover hundreds of square kilometres. So, when such a swarm flies over a place, the
5 sun will be blocked and the entire area will be sunk into darkness.
Like migratory birds, locusts fly long distances from one country to another. In 1954,
a swarm of locusts flew from Africa to Europe. A plague of locusts is a disaster to fanners
as they are immensely destructive to crops. When they descend upon a corn or wheat field,
they will eat up all the vegetation and strip the field bare. In fact, nothing green will be left
io standing in their path. To fight them off is ahnost impossible as there are millions and
millions of them scattered over a wide area. So when locusts come down to an area, they
will often bring about the misery of starvation or hunger.
Once a plague of locusts swarmed over an Australian town and the town mayor
asked the people to start eating locusts as a way to fight them. Eating locusts may sound
15 disgusting at first but according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, 62% of a locust
is made up of protein.
In some Southeast Asian countries, eating deep-fried insects like crickets,
grasshoppers, cicadas and so on is not crazy but quite common. Crunchy insect snack is
sold by roadside vendors and even at reputable restaurants. Insect-catching is a source of
20 income fbr poor villagers who catch insects and sell them to such snack sellers. If insect
eating becomes widely acceptable, the problem of food shortages in some countries can be
solved. This is because insects are plentiful in many parts of the world and they multiply
quickly.
Besides being possible food for human beings, locusts are also fantastic food fbr pets
25 like geckos, chameleons, and birds. Their larger size makes them preferable to smaller
insects. In fact it is easy for pet owners to rear some themselves. All one has to do is
provide a small enclosed place with a layer of sand fbr locusts to lay eggs. A female locust
lays about 200 eggs and the young eat the same food as the adults.
1. Why are locusts harmful to human beings? B They can turn the sky dark.

Skunks are well-known fbr their smelling spray. A skunk's spray is an oily liquid produced by
glands under its large tail. To employ this scent bomb, a skunk turns around and blasts its fbe with a fbul
mist that can travel as far as three metres.
There are many different kinds of skunks. They vary in size and appear in a variety of striped,
spotted, and swirled patterns— but all are a vivid black-and-white that makes them easily identifiable
and may alert predators to their pungent potential.
Skunks usually nest in burrows constructed by other animals, but they also live in hollow logs or
even abandoned buildings. In colder climates, some skunks may sleep in these nests fbr several weeks of
the chilliest season. The female gives birth to between two and ten young each year.
Skunks are opportunistic eaters with a varied diet. They are noctumal foragers who eat fruit and
plants, insects, larvae, worms, eggs, reptiles, small mammals, and even fish. Nearly all skunks live in the
Americas, except fbr the Asian stink badgers that have recently been added to the skunk family.

SECTION A: COMPREHENSION (20%)
Read thefollowing passages carefully and then answer the questions whichfollow. For each question,
select the best answerfrom the options A, B, C and D.
Passage 1
A snake slithers up the side of a saguaro cactus. Danger is all around it. Sharp spines
stick out of the cactus. One poke could hurt the snake. So it makes its way upwards
slowly.
Above the snake, a small, grey bird sits on one of the cactus's arms. The bird doesn't
5 see the snake. Its eyes are on the desert below.
The snake moves closer to its prey. Suddenly, it lunges. It opens its mouth to grab the
bird. The bird rears back, flaps its wings, and flies off. It's a costly mistake for the snake.
Missing a meal here can be the difference between life and death. Food is hard to come
by.
10 The snake slithers down. The bird will return later. Both animals need the saguaro
cactus. They aren't the only ones. A saguaro can live fbr about 150 years. Throughout its
life, animals will come upon this amazing plant. They will use it for food, shelter, and
water.
Birds will nest in the cactus. Bats will drink from its flowers. Wild boars will eat its
15 fruit. In the parched and scorching desert, the saguaro is the centre of life.
The saguaro doesn't start out this way. It's a slow grower. In its first 10 years, it may
grow only to about the size of your thumb. That might not seem 1汰e much, but most
plants can't even grow that tall in the desert. That's because a desert is an ecosystem that
gets very little rain. Only about 25 centimetres (10 inches) of rain falls each year. Since
20 water is scarce, plants and animals have to make every drop count.
The saguaro has adaptations, or behaviours and body parts that help it survive in this
tough environment. Its skin is one of these adaptations. The blazing sun kills most plants
in the desert. It dries them out. It doesn't dry out the saguaro, though. The saguaro's dark
green skin is thick and waxy. It traps water inside so that the cactus doesn't dry up.
25 The saguaro also relies on its roots fbr survival. The roots soak up water to keep it
alive. They also hold the cactus in the ground. They grow out far from the plant. Some
roots spread as far from the plant as its height.
These roots don't go very deep. They are often no more than 8 centimetres (3 inches)
under the soil. Having shallow roots is perfect fbr desert life. During a heavy rain, a
30 saguaro's roots suck up water as soon as it soaks into the ground. Then the roots send the
water up into the stem.
Think of the stem as a big storage tank fbr water. It holds stored water. The saguaro
changes as its 'tank' gets full. Its skin is pleated, or folded. As the roots take in more and
more water, the pleats expand like an accordion. The stem begins to swell.
35 The stem can store water fbr months. When there is little rain, the saguaro taps into
this tank. As its water supply runs lower and lower, the saguaro gets skinnier and skinnier.
To survive in the desert takes more than just water. The saguaro needs food, too. Like
all plants, saguaros make their own food by using sunlight. This is called photosynthesis.

Passage 2
I had almost finished a busy 12-hour shift as a casualty doctor in a large government
hospital in London when the emergency "red phone,, rang. The night sister rushed to
answer the phone. After the conversation, she turned to me mechanically. t4The ambulance
is bringing in two victims in three minutes,'' she said. I had another 15 minutes before the
5 end of my shift, so I told her I would stay to help.
When the ambulance arrived, the stench of alcohol and burned flesh was nauseating.
The victims were both in their mid-20s. They had no facial hair or expressions. Their
clothes were charred and shredded. The ambulance crew told us that they had been
rescued from a blazing car following a motorway crash. They were in no pain. They had
io no nerves left on their skin to register pain.
I started to examine them. Both men had suffered about 90 percent full thickness
burns. I immediately rang the hospital's burns unit. When I had described the condition of
the two patients, the duly registrar at the bums unit asked, "You did say 19 percent bums
didn't you?"
"No, " I replied. 4tNinety percent. " There was a long silence on the phone. Finally he
asked "Are they alive? Could you send them across ... now?"
Two ambulances were quickly arranged: each would carry one of the victims
accompanied by a doctor and nurse. I went in first.
The trip to the burns unit took about 10 minutes, but seemed like an eternity. There
20 was little fbr me to do apart from checking that the patient's airway was clear and
functioning. I tried to avoid breathing in the fbul odour from his burned flesh and
alcohol-soaked breath.
The team was waiting fbr us when we arrived. The examination was swift and
thorough. A definitive verdict was soon reached. Patient X, who turned out to be age 35,
25 had 93 percent full thickness burns. Patient Y had 85 percent full thickness bums. He was
25 years old. Everybody rushed over to work on patient Y, desperately trying to save him.
As they were busy working on patient Y, I went to see patient X. He was moved to a
side room. The room was bare and quiet. There was a nurse sitting by him. He was alive. I
looked into his eyes. It was the first time I had looked a conscious human being straight in
30 the eyes helplessly.
I left the bums unit in the early morning, long after my shift had finished. I never did
find out their names. For me, as a casualty doctor, the lesson was made unforgettable the
night I tended these two young men whose fates were sealed when they climbed, drunk
behind the wheel.

Volunteerism is an act of selflessly giving your life or your time to something you know that it
should be meaningful and free. Volunteering takes many fbrms such as providing services to the
disabled, giving free tuition to the children in a community or rescue people that have been trapped
during a natural disaster. According to the 2000 National Survey of Giving, Volunteering and
Participating (NSGVP), volunteers benefit themselves from the activities of volunteering. When
volunteers help their community, they do not only help the needy around them but, in a way, the
voluntary work itself benefits them a lot. They may feel a sense of achievement, as if they've
accomplished something because they have made someone else's life better or they have brought a
change to their community somehow. Besides, volunteering also helps them to develop their
interpersonal skills. When they are lending help to others, they need to communicate with people from
different backgrounds; they need to understand these people, to motivate them or even to deal with them
with difficult situations. Volunteers also serve others without expecting to get anything out of their
service. Moreover, it allows them to develop qualities of generosity, compassion, and kindness when
they give a 能w hours of their time fbr their community. In addition, volunteering is also seen as a
platform fbr the volunteers to get job related skills and improve job opportunities. While serving others,
they may be training and preparing themselves fbr their job prospects.

SECTION A: COMPREHENSION (20%)
Read the following passages carefiilly and then answer the questions whichfollow. For each question,
select the best answer fi'om the options A, B. C and D.
Passage 1
Right now, 1 am looking at a shelf ftill of relics, a collection of has-beens, old-timers,
antiques, fossils. Right now I am looking at a shelf full of books. Yes, that's right. If you
have some spare cash and are looking to enhance your reading experience, then I highly
suggest you consider purchasing an e-reader. E-readers are replacing the books of old, and
5 I welcome them with open anns.
An e-reader is a device that allows you to read e-books. An e-book is a book-length
publication in digital fbnn, consisting of text, images, or both, and produced on, published
through, and readable on computers or other electronic devices. Sometimes the equivalent
of a conventional printed book, e-books can also be bom digital.
io So now you know what is an e-reader. But you still may be wondering why e-readers
put printed books to shame. E-readers are superior to printed books because they save
space, are environmentally friendly, and provide helpfill reading tips and tools that printed
books do not.
E-readers are superior to printed books because they save space. The average e-reader
15 can store thousands of digital books, providing a veritable library at your fingertips. What
is more, being the size and weight of a thin hardback, the e-reader itself is relatively petite.
It is easy to hold and can fit in a pocketbook or briefcase easily. This makes handling
bulky novels such as War and Peace, Anna Karenina, and Romance of the Three
Kingdoms a breeze. Perhaps the only drawback to the space-saving aspect of an e-reader
20 is that it requires you to find new things to put on your shelves.
In addition, e-readers are superior to books because they are environmentally Jriendly.
The average novel is about 300 pages long. So, if a novel is printed 1000 times, it will use
300,000 pieces of paper. That's a lot of paper! If there are about 80,000 pieces of paper in
a tree, this means it lakes almost 4 trees to make these 1000 books. Now, we know that the
25 average bestseller sells about 20,000 copies per week. That means that it lakes over 300
trees each month to sustain this rate. And fbr the super bestsellers, these figures increase
dramatically. For example, the Harry Potter book series has sold over 450 million copies.
That's about 2 million trees! Upon viewing these figures, it is not hard to grasp the severe
impact of printed books on the environment. Since e-readers use no trees, they represent a
30 significant amounl of preservation in terms of the environment and its resources.
Finally, e-readers are superior to books because they provide helpful reading tips
and tools that printed books do not. The typical e-reader allows its user to customize letter
size, fbnl, and line spacing. Il also allows highlighting and electronic bookmarking.
Furthermore, it grants users the ability to get an overview of a book and then jump to a
35 specific location based on that overview. While these are all nice features, perhaps the
most helpful of all is the ability to gel dictionary definitions at the touch of a finger. On
even the most basic e-reader, users can conjure instant definitions without having to hunt
through a physical dictionary.
It can be seen that e-readers are superior to printed books. They save space, are
40 environmentally friendly, and provide helpful reading tips and tools that printed books do
not. So what good are printed books? Well, they certainly make nice decorations.

Passage 2
Cockfighting is a bloody sport which involves two specially bred cockerels fighting
each olher in an arena surrounded by enthusiastic spectators. A fighting cockerel is no
ordinary cockerel just as Mike Tyson is no ordinary man. It is taller, bigger, and better at
fighting. Its comb and wattle are much smaller and hence they have smaller areas where
5 its opponent can peck and tear at. These two parts also hold the most blood and if injured
in a fight will lead to heavy loss of blood and so greatly weaken the cockerel or even kill
it.
-33 -
Like fighting fish, a cockerel is naturally aggressive towards other cockerels. Hence
when they meet, they will inevitably get into a fight. But it is only nature's way of
10 deciding who the boss is, and not a fight to death. Sometimes, it is also a fight for food
and space.
To anybody with feeling or sensitivity, cockfighting is obviously a cruel and
inhumane sport. The game birds will have to endure a lot of flying kicks delivered to the
head, and fierce pecking. Moreover, the fight lasts lor hours and the poor cockerels will
【5 not only look terribly exhausted but bloody towards the end of the fight. Sometimes, a
knife is attached to one of its legs and the opponent may become fatally injured by the
sharp weapon. However, the fight will normally not end in death. The losing cockerel will
admit defeat by showing sign of fear and run away.
Cockfighting was a common and popular pastime in ancient times worldwide. It was
20 as exciting as a football or a baseball malch. The spectators will often place a bet on the
cockerel which they think will win. Today cockfighting is banned in most countries
because of its cruelty and connection to gambling. It is also a dangerous sport. In 2003, a
12-year-old boy in Sabah was killed when he was attacked by a fighting cockerel.
One must not underestimate the power of these fighting cockerels. They are like
25 professional boxers and can deliver fast and deadly kicks. Sometimes, the opponent is
blinded by the kick. A good fighting cockerel possesses speed, power, and stamina.
Besides winning some money, the owner also takes tremendous pride in owning a
champion fighter and he will not part with his game bird unless offered an attractive price.
11. What makes a fighting cockerel different from the ordinary cockerels?
A It is fiercer and braver.
B It is good at pecking and kicking.
C It is specially trained fbr the purpose of fighting.
D It is different in terms of size, height and ability to fight.
12. Why is it an advantage fbr the comb or wattle to be small?
A It makes the fighting cockerels slimmer.
B Smaller comb or wattle cannot be injured.
C Smaller comb or wattle will not bleed when injured.
D Smaller comb or wattle means the area to be attacked is smaller.
13. Cockfighting as a sport is possible because________ •
A cockerels must decide who the leader is
B it gives people a chance to bet or gamble
C cockerels need to fight for food and space to survive
D a cockerePs aggressiveness towards other males is inborn
-34 -
14. In line 13, the word linhumane, means lacking in________ .

15. How would attaching a knife to the cockerels* leg affect the fight?

B The fight may end more quickly.
C The owner will be more worried.
D The cockerels will become more cautious.
16. Cockfighting is considered a cruel sport because

The Malaysian government is facing stiff challenges in its forest management. Although
Malaysia has the policies to protect its rainforests in the form of the National Forestry Act of 1984,
it has tailed to put them into practice. During the 1980s, active large scales tree cutting in Sabah and
Sarawak allowed Malaysia to temporarily overtake Indonesia to become the world's largest exporter
of tropical wood. Rainforests in Peninsular Malaysia are mostly gone because of timber production,
though some big forests still exist in Taman Negara, a national park. In the past twenty years, most
of the East Malaysia's remaining rainforest in the states of Sabah and Sarawak, especially rainforest
in lowlands, have been logged. As a result, this has caused the extinction of many exotic species of
flora and fauna. Loggers are now operating in more marginal areas or mountain slopes. This has
increased the risk of soil erosion and mudslides. In Sabah, cutting has slowed down over the years
after a period of rapid deforestation. Timber production has been shifted to Sarawak, where about
half the forest cover is slated fbr logging. In Sarawak, some forests are reserved by the government,
but these areas generally do not have enough workers to protect the forests and are threatened by
illegal logging.

SECTION A: COMPREHENSION (20%)
Read the following passages carefully and then answer the questions whichfollow. For each question,
select the best answer fix)m the options A. B. C and D.
Passage 1
50 years ago, when I was seven years old, we lived in a big house along the Ohio
River in New Richmond, Ohio. The house was separated from the river by the street and
our wide front lawn. The ground floor had been built two metres above grade.
Late in December, the heavy rains came and the river climbed to the top of the banks.
5 My mother decided she would pack our books and her fine china in the den off the master
bedroom to upstairs.
Each piece of china has a gold rim and a band of roses. But the chinaware had been
her mother's and precious to her. As she packed the china carefiilly, she said to me "You
must treasure the things that people you love have cherished." I did not understand then.
io We would not leave the house. My father, the only doctor of the town, had to be
where the sick could find him. However, it was hard to sleep at night. Debris had broken
windows. Sometimes a log or perhaps a table would bang into the walls.
My mother cooked a simple meal in a spare bedroom she had turned into a makeshift
kitchen. Father came and went in a small fishing boat to show concern about his patients.
15 Very late one night, the floor of the den had fallen through and all the treasures we
had tried to save were now on the first floor, under the stealthily rising river. The books
were bobbing like little rafts on the waler.
My mother that night sat on the stairs with her head on her crossed arms and cried. 1
had never seen her like that. Her weeping made me afraid. I had to figure out something.
20 The next morning, I went downstairs and played in the boat that I rowed round once.
The books began to sink. I made a hook from a wire coat-hanger and carefully fastened it
to a weighted line. Then, I let it sink and began to drag, hoping to find pieces of my
mother's treasure.
The waler rose day after day, and my father decided we would have to seek shelter in
25 the tents on the hill. When I got into my rowboat ibr the last time, I dragged my line
through the water. Just as I made a last lum, I snagged something. Holding my breath, I
slowly raised my catch to the surface. 1 had found the gravy boat from my mother's set of
chinaware.
When we settled in a tent, we were worn out. Father had gone off to care fbr the sick
3。 people and mother sat on my cot with her arm round my shoulder. She smiled at me. Then
I reached under iny pillow and took out the gravy boat. She looked at it and took it in her
hands and held it fbr a long time. She was just sitting, gazing at the gravy boat. She
seemed both close to me and also very far away. She pulled me into her arms and held me
tight. I said to myself then nothing would ever happen to that gravy boat as long as I lived.
