Passage 2

Chang Ping-i has never forgotten her first visit to a leper village in China. It was 1999,
Chang was a high profile award-winning journalist with China Times in Taipei, and the
40-year-old had just given birth to her second child three months earlier. When she walked
in, she found naked, filthy children with flies crawling over their faces, adults with rotting
5 but untended limbs, and an overpowering stench coming from the villagers.

Chang was first exposed to the issues surrounding leprosy, a chronic disease that can
pennanenily damage nerves and ravage skin and limbs, four months before that disturbing
scene. At nine months pregnant, she was not getting any assignments from her newspaper.
So when an Austrian priest persuaded her to visit Losheng Sanatorium, Taiwan's last
io remaining care home fbr leprosy patients, Chang, living up to her “佢arless” nickname,
agreed. That piqued her interest and when the same priest suggested heading to leper
villages in China, Chang didn't hesitate.

Despite the awfulness of what she witnessed there, Chang was deeply moved by the
plight of the villagers in more than 800 leper colonies across China, who want nothing
15 more than fbr their children 一 most of whom are unaffected by the disease 一 to be
educated and accepted by society. "I didn't expect to find that more than half of the people
in these colonies would be healthy and young," says Chang, now 53. "As a mother of two,
I couldn't help but wonder about their fulure,,,

After reluming to Taipei, Chang quit her high-paying job at China Times. It was not
20 an easy decision fbr someone who grew up in an affluent family, but she knew in her heart

she had to trade her career and comfortable fbur-storey villa in Taipei to help the children
of China's leper villages. "I didn't choose it," she says. "Il was lhe timing. You can't
explain it."

-47 -

The Chinese government had begun isolating lepers into colonies during the 1950s to
25 contain outbreaks. While the disease is now curable and preventable, discrimination was

rife in communities such as Liangshan in Sichuan province, where the majority of
residents belong to the Yi ethnic minority, who traditionally equated leprosy with demonic
possession.

Many of these villages were never officially recognised by the government, so
30 residents do not have identification papers that allow them to go to school or seek work

outside their village. With no care, education or future to speak of, Chang learned that
children in these villages routinely become addicted to cigarettes by the age of five and
many eventually turn to alcohol, drugs and crime.

Near the end of 2000, a contact rang Chang about a school in Liangshan's Yuexi
35 county. The so-called "education depot", established in 1987, had been the first school in

Sichuan built for the children of leper villages. It was a dilapidated, windowless
two-rooin house and the 70 students were taught only up to the fourth grade by a teacher
with no formal training.

Chang saw the school as an opportunity fbr the children to have a better future so she
40 poured her efforts into rebuilding it. She raised funds, supervised the construction and

dealt with local officials. By 2002, she was proud to attend the opening of a new school
block, equipped with new facilities, teachers and staffl The next year, the school added an
on-campus dormitory, and she established the Wings of Hope foundation in Taiwan to
give her vision a specific name and purpose.

45 By the end of 2005, Wings of Hope had achieved three major milestones. Firstly,
Chang beat 800 applicants to win a NTS 1.7 million ($58,000) prize from the Johnnie
Walker Keep Walking Fund, which awards grants to deserving projects. Then, in March
2005, authorities recognised the village around the school, giving residents legal
identification fbr the first time in their lives. The village was renamed Dayingpan. And

50 in July 2005, Dayingpan elementary school celebrated its first batch of graduates and
Chang could move on to the next phase of her dream: building a middle school. With the
help of a 2.6 million yuan ($410,000) grant from the Sichuan Poverty Alleviation Bureau,
Dayingpan middle school was completed in 2010.

Dayingpan is now the pride of Liangshan, with ten multimedia classrooms, a kitchen
55 and two libraries, water resources and solar power. It even has its own underground water

tank and the village's first public toilet. Next term, the school expects to have 17 teachers
and 355 students. Amazingly, one in ten students are not from leper villages.

Reading is an exercise for the mind. This is because reading provides input and stimulates the
mind. However, we do not seem to make an attempt to read. In a recent survey, it was discovered
that a majority of students hardly read. They do not realise the pleasures and benefits of reading.

Today, there are millions of books and other reading materials dealing with various subjects
such as health care, economics, politics and hobbies, which are not only infbnnative and usefill but
also provide entertainment as well. One can read just to keep up with the news, fbr seif
improvement or just fbr relaxation.

Reading is good for one's creativity. This is because the reader has to imagine the scenes that
are described in a stoiy Studies have suggested that people who read a lot are more creative than
those who often watch movies or television. As such, one of the benefits of reading is that it
encourages a person to use his imagination.

Moreover, reading also helps to enrich and improve a person,s language. There are certain
words which are seldom used in spoken language but occur more often in writing. A person who
reads, comes across many such words and, thus, increases his vocabulary. When speaking, we often
do not use complete or properly constructed sentences. In writing, only grammatically correct, well
constructed sentences are used. Reading, therefore, introduces a person to a wider vocabulary and
correct grammar.

SECTION A: COMPREHENSION (20%)
Rend rhe following passages carefi/lly and then answer the questions whichfollow. For each question,
select the best answerJt-om options A. B. C or D.

Passage 1
A few weeks ago, 1 walked into a supemiarket and almost instantly felt a change in

the atmosphere. Eyes scared through me. Gasps followed, then murmurs and gestures.
Why did my entrance provoke such strong reactions?

I was accompanying psychotherapist Cassandra for the day to gather material fbr an
5 article I was writing. She is 33 and blind, struck by Stargardt disease at a young age, a

disease which caused her sight to deteriorate rapidly. I followed her to observe how she
navigated her way around with her guide dog, Esme, a three-year-old Labrador Retriever
with soulfill eyes.

She often received lectures from the passers-by. Just recently, staff at a clothing outlet
io refused to allow her to remain in the store because of their ''no-animals" rule. At bus stops

and even just walking along the road, I saw curious glances from other folks. Some
exclaimed with delight at the obedient Esme. Others, looked frazzled and frowned.

Once I stepped into a shopping mall, the staff at a fast food restaurant requested her to
sil in a quiet comer near the dustbin. She stood her ground and did not move. Later,
15 when we went to the supermarket fbr her to grab some groceries, I saw the looks of
displeasure and shock everywhere I turned. A man exclaimed, “No dog inside!".

I was rattled and fuming. I wanted to point out to him that it was a guide dog and it
had a right to be there. Then it hit me: just how challenging it was fbr people like
Cassandra. This is what she must face every day. It is a daily battle with small-minded
20 people who are blithely unaware of the existence and importance of guide dogs fbr the
blind. She often got lectures from passers-by. Food joints refiised to serve her. She even
got a shove or a knock on the head by strangers displeased with her fbr taking what they
thought was a pel indoors.

As fbr her, she seemed blase about it and determined to ignore the commotion. But I
25 knew how much it could hurt. The guide dog is an essential aid to help her live a life of

independence and dignity. Ironically, it also leads to a curtailment of her freedom because
of other people's perceptions.

The blind are struggling to cope with their conditions and trying to get by. Things we
do without even thinking, that we take fbr granted each day, are an uphill task fbr them.

30 A guide dog is more than an animal or a pet. It is a lifeline fbr a group of people who
have already lost an important faculty. It is also a powerful symbol of acceptance. It is not
too late to change our mindset. Start young. Have a concerted effort to educate people.

Cassandra summed up the situation well. She said, "Uniil the day, members of the
community are willing to accept a guide dog sitting next to them or sharing space at the
35 food court, few blind people will step forward to accept this mobility aid.,,

him. Sara was four when her mom died. Her dad had always been there fbr her. Now she

Sara watched people go in and out of the shoe store across the street. It reminded her
of the time when she was a little girl. Sara started working when she was ten years old.
Every Saturday, she walked to work with her dad. He owned a shoe shop in Los Angeles.
Sara liked hanging out with her dad. She also enjoyed helping customers picked out shoes.
io Her dad paid $1.50 fbr every pair of shoes she sold. The most money slie ever made in
one day was $15. Sara's dad taught her how to budget her money carefiilly. Each week,
she wrote down how many pairs of shoes she sold. She counted all her money. Then Sara
pul 75% in a savings account that her dad opened fbr her. She kept 25% to spend.

Sara's dad started talking to her about college when she was three years old. "It's
/5 never loo early to start planning fbr your education,he always said. And he was right.

last night. He had gripped his chest and fallen back into the chair. She knew things would
be diHerent.

-61 -

She skipped school today to sit in her favourite cafe. She needed to think. Her head
was full of questions. Do I need to start taking care ofmy dad? Do I need to cook healthy
30 meals? Should I start exercising with him? What if this happens again? What ifhe dies?
What will / do?

Sara decided to make a list of important matters to discuss with her father. She
already knew what he would say: "Oh, don't be silly. There is nothing wrong with me."
She would give him the speech about not blowing her off. Then he would listen. She
35 would ask questions. He would answer them. She would wish she were ten years old
again.

Sara stayed at the cafe all day long. She wasn't hungry. She hadn't eaten all day,
except fbr a muffin and coffee that morning. At about 16:30, Sara looked up from her list.
Standing outside the cafe window was her father. He looked down at her. She smiled, and
40 tears streamed down her face. Her dad came inside and sat down. He didn't say anything
al first. He just looked at the paper, trying to make out the words between his fingers. He
wiped her tears away, and said, "I'm okay, but you're right, we probably need to talk
about some things.,,

Sara thought, "I'm so glad I didn't have to give him the speech."

In some countries, young people work while they are still studying. Sometimes students with jobs
are high school students who are living at home. Usually, their parents provide them with some pocket
money. However, some students may want to augment their pocket money with money they have earned
themselves. Therefore, students may take a job fbr a few hours outside school hours. They may deliver
the newspaper before going to school in the morning. Perhaps they may work fbr a few hours on
Saturdays in a local shop. In fact, such part-time work is often quite a good thing as it gives the students
some financial independence and teaches them the value of money. They will appreciate money more if
they have earned it. Students also gain valuable work experience by doing a part-time job. Employers
often prefer to employ new graduates who have work experience. However, it is difficult fbr students to
remain focused on their studies if they have to rush off to their part-time jobs. Part-time jobs can
sometimes be very tiring because the students may finish their shifts very late causing them to be unable
to concentrate well in school. Students often do not get enough sleep and they have very little time fbr
relaxation or leisure. Hence, students who want to do a part-time job have to learn to juggle their work
and studies.

Passage 1

The Taj Mahal is. quite simply, one of the world's most stunning buildings. This
white marble mausoleum in the city of Agra has become the premier cultural icon of
India; endlessly photographed, its image is familiar all over the world. Yet people seeing it
fbr the first time still gasp at its breathtaking beauty. To architects, the Taj Mahal is the
5 finest surviving example of Mughal architecture (a blend of Indian, Persian and Islamic
architecture), unsurpassed in its hannonious proportions and fluidity of decoration. To the
rest of the world, it is an enduring monument of love built by a gricf-stricken man after
the death of his most beloved wife.

The Taj Mahal was constructed in the I7,h century by the Mughal Emperor Shah
io Jahan in honour of his favourite wife, Aijumand Banu Begum, better known as Mumtaz

Mahal (meaning Chosen One of the Palace), who died giving birth to their 14,h child in
1631. Devastated by her sudden death, Shah Jahan set out lo create an eternal monument
in her memory - indeed, the name Taj Mahal, which means 'Crown Palace', is a
derivation of her name. The result was a tme labour of love that took 22 years to
15 complete.

Though his name is now inextricably linked to love, Shah Jahan was as ruthless as
any of his ancestors, dispatching four of his brothers on his way to the throne. He brought
his imperial power to bear in constructing his most famous legacy. A team of 22 000
workers - sculptors, stonemasons, carvers, painters, calligraphers, inlayers and others -
20 was recruited from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. It was a job of brute strength where
1000 elephants were used in transporting and bringing the translucent white marble blocks
190 km (120 miles) from Rajasthan. Then, 28 kinds of precious and semi-precious stones -
including onyx, amethyst, lapis lazuli, turquoise, jade and mother-of pearl 一 were brought
from Russia, Persia, Afghanistan, China and Tibet to decorate his fabulous creation rising
25 in Agra.

The building work was completed in 1 653 although decorative additions continued to
be made until 1657. The inscriptions on the gateways, mosque and tomb were the work of
the renowned calligrapher, Amanat Khan. The chief architect remains unknown although
he is believed to have been Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, an Indian of Persian descent. The
30 overall concept is said to have been the brainchild of the Shah himself, who had
apparently loved designing palaces since childhood.

Although it is the mausoleum's central dome that stays in people's minds, the Taj
Mahal has five main components — the main gateway, garden, mausoleum, mosque and
jawab (a building mirroring the mosque). In all, it covers 17 ha (42 acres) of grounds
35 sloping in terraces down towards the River Yamuna. In accordance with the principles of
Mughal architecture, the five elements were designed as a unified entity and no
subsequent alterations were allowed.

“I had a wonderful childhood in Penang. 1 remember my parents reading bedtime
stories to my brother and me every night before we go to bed," Chelsia Ng's eyes lighted
up as she recalled fondly.

"My mum and dad loved music and that was passed on to my brother and me. Our
5 home was always and is still filled with music," she says. "My mum would bring us to

the Botanical Gardens on weekends. My parents taught us to appreciate Mother Nature
and I remember the countless camping trips. And of course, there were also those cycling
trips we took on Saturdays,'' she adds.

Chelsia's acting career took off in 2004 when she was offered a supporting role in the

opportunity for me and that definitely kick-started my acting career.,, When asked about
how often she goes back to her hometown, she answers without any hesitation, "Any

"I am working on my music right now. It feels really good to be back in the studio! I
15 am really looking forward to sharing my music with everyone!,, she says.

“My fondest memory of Penang is my grandfather's old house where I grew up.
Every morning at 9.00, there would be a moving market outside on the street we lived on,
and I would look forward to the soya bean van and the aunty selling nasi lemak from her
motorbike," she says.

20 "We had a menagerie of animals. We had hamsters, tortoises, rabbits, dogs, and cats.
It was my grandfather who taught me about animals and how to care for our pets. He
would nurse injured birds back to health and release them once they were healed. I
remember these birds would come back to visit him, landing on his arm to say "Hi" to
him,,, Chelsia says while laughing.

25 Chelsia recommends first timers to Penang to take a trishaw ride to get the best out of
Georgetown. "Our trishaw uncles are the best tour guides. It is definitely better than hiring
a van or a bus tour," she says. She also has a soft spot for assam laksa. t4Not just any
assani laksa, OK! I love the one sold by this Indian uncle who operates from his
motorbike. He also sells some awesome Nyonya kuih. My tummy is growling now!" she

While she was away studying in Sydney, she got her mum to teach her the basics of
