MIS In-school Grading and Assessment
• Grading scale: 1-7 (Same scale as IB, but are not
official IB scores)
• Student grades go on MIS transcript
• Graded assessment includes:
• Formative assessment (homework, quizzes,
participation)
• Summative assessment (exams, projects, essays)
• Official IB internal assessments (IAs) that are
submitted to the IB
• Mock exams based on past “papers” (in IB, “paper” =
exam)

Can be IB Internal Assessments (IAs) or teacher-created assessment tasks.
Quizzes: 20% - 30%
Quizzes can be either pop quizzes or announced in advance
Term Exams: 30-40%
Mock exams will be based on past papers of IB exams. Exams will increase in level of
difficulty as students progress through the two year course. No exam will exceed 2.5 hours.

MIS Grading and DP Grading
• IBDP grades are independent of MIS grades
• MIS grade scale is based on the DP grade scale
• Although MIS teachers have some input in DP grades
(IAs, etc), it is the IB that issues the IB Diploma, not
MIS
• MIS Diploma is issued when student graduates in May
2022
• IB Diploma results are announced and diploma
awarded in July 2022
• Teachers give “predicted grades” in April 2022;
students apply to university based on these grades

Three Paths to Graduation from MIS
• Everyone begins Year One as a full IBDP student
• On November 15 of Year Two, I register students for
their DP subjects
• In Year 2, students may switch their HL/SL subjects,
depending upon subjects and conditions (can switch
online Pamoja classes with charge and time limits)
• Students have plenty of time to decide which path to
take

Recommendations for DP and Uni Success
• Stop all private tuitions that are not related to the
DP, SAT, or essay writing.
• If planning to attend a US university, study SAT
preparation books. If possible, get an SAT math
tutor, as SAT math is different from DP math
• Write a really good university application essay
• Get involved in school activities (STUGO, etc.) and
volunteer activities
• Make sure your child gets enough sleep and is not
on social media/phone all night long

And Are More Successful at U.K. Universities than A-level Students
• IB students are more likely than A level students to:
•achieve first-class honours and to leave with an award in most
subject areas
•be employed in graduate-level jobs and in higher-paid occupations
•go on to further study
after university
(almost twice as likely)
•be enrolled at a top 20
higher education
institution (HEI).

DP: Better Unis, Faster Graduation
• DP students get into better universities than non-DP
• Higher DP scores, better schools
• AUS, UK, NZ, FRA, NL universities: 3 years
• Many of these countries’ unis: high DP score =
guaranteed uni entry
• US & CA universities: 4 years
• Uni acceptance = combo of high school grade point
average (GPA), SAT scores, volunteerism, IB scores, etc
• US and Canadian universities: Give university credit for
high scores (5+) on HL classes; save money, graduate fast

HL vs. SL: The Differences
• HL: 240 hrs of instruction. Sometimes more
difficult (Math HL, Physics HL, Indonesian HL), but
often just covers more content (English HL,
Business HL)
• SL: 150 hrs of instruction. Covers less content.
Often has fewer assessments (e.g. Bio SL has two
exams, Bio HL has three)
• I am an examiner for English LAL. Except for
subjects like Math, Music, and Physics, the
differences in HL and SL scores are not big.

Group 5: Math
The sixth subject choice should be based upon:
a) Strengths and likelihood of getting a high score
b) Interests - what do I enjoy?
c) Future major and career goals

Save $$$ - University Credit for DP Classes - U of Toronto
• It takes 20 credits to graduate from the University of Toronto in Canada.
• Students can earn university credit for high scores on their MIS DP exams.
• UT offers 1 credit each for HL scores of 5+ for the following subjects MIS
offers:
• English LAL
• Biology
• Physics
• Chemistry
• Math SL
• Psychology
• Philosophy
• Economics
• An MIS student could get 3 credits of the 20 necessary to graduate, or 15%
of graduation requirements (i.e. roughly one semester)
• International student fees range from $17k to $45k CDN a year, depending
on major, so 3 credits (i.e. 3 HL IB classes) saves you ~$7.8 - $20.4k USD
© International Baccalaureate Organization 2016
Save $$$ - University Credit for DP Classes - UCLA
• It takes 180 credits to graduate from UCLA.
• UCLA awards eight (8) credit hours for scores of 5+ in HL classes in:
• English LAL
• Biology
• Chemistry
• Physics
• Business
• Economics
• Psychology
• An MIS student taking three HL classes could earn up to 24 credits
• 24 credits is 13% of the 180 credits required to graduate, or approximately
one semester of the eight total semester
• One year (two semesters) of tuition at UCLA is $39,516
• Three classes, then, is approximately one semester; this means you would
save approximately $19,758 if your child scores 5+ on three HL classes and
attends UCLA.
© International Baccalaureate Organization 2016
University Credit for DP Classes - General
• Most US and CA universities offer university credit for scores of 5+ in HL
classes (students take 3 HL classes)
• Top schools (Ivy League) offer little or no DP credit; some schools (e.g. UGA,
Michigan State) offer credit for SL classes
• In general, 5+ in classes like English, Biology, Physics, and Business will earn
university credit
• Google “[school name] IB credit” to learn more
• So, remember - when you get that bill for IB exam registration for $866
(ouch!) - you could be saving tens of thousands of dollars if you child gets
5+ on his/her HL exams
• IB university credit only applies to US and Canada
• UK, AUS, NZ, NL, FRA, etc. - 3 year undergrad
• Bridge-U - exciting college/careers software
