A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Our nation today is in a turmoil. It is urgent that we acknowledge this state of
turmoil by educating, informing, directing, inspiring, and motivating the youth of
today. Our youth must prepare to lead this nation, our country, our cities, and our
communities. This 35th Annual Freedom Fund Scholarship and Awards Banquet is
just one avenue we take to accomplish this. It is because of your generosity and
active support that the Beaumont Branch NAACP is able to support and contribute
to our local high school students’ educational endeavors.

It truly is an honor this year to serve as the Interim President of this prominent and
distinguished organization. It is with this in mind that I challenge each of you to

so that we can do greater things in our local community. We must work together to
change the economical, social, and political disparities that are present. These
disparities are real, not fake news.

We must accomplish equal justice for all in our local community. We must work
harder to accomplish real unity in this community. We must work the work of He
that sent us. I challenge you to join the Beaumont Branch NAACP, as we work
together to accomplish greater things in our city.

Thank you and may God bless you, may God bless Beaumont, and this great
country.

Twice each week, millions of newspaper readers around the country seek out his rich and uncommonly reso-
nant voice. In a word, he connects with them. Nowhere was this demonstrated more forcefully than in the re-
sponse to his initial column on the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Pitts’ column, “We’ll Go Forward From This Mo-

of 30,000 emails, and has since been set to music, reprinted in poster form, read on television by Regis Phil-
bin and quoted by Congressman Richard Gephardt as part of the Democratic Party’s weekly radio address.

His books have also been widely praised. Tavis Smiley called him “the most insightful and inspiring col-
umnist of his generation” in writing about Pitts’ 2009 collection of columns, Forward From This Mo-

-
tion which challenges everything we thought we knew about how our nation dealt with its most stubborn stain.”
The acclaimed author and journalist Herb Boyd called it “a beguiling, cinematic love story.” The Washington Post
dubbed it “a uniquely American epic,” Essence pronounced it worthy of a Pulitzer Prize, and Sybil Wilkes, who
chairs “Sybil’s Book Club” on radio’s top-rated Tom Joyner Morning Show said simply, “I so love this story.”

Leonard Pitts was born and raised in Southern California. He was awarded a degree in English from the
University of Southern California at the age of 19, having entered school at 15 on a special honors pro-
gram. Since 1995, he has lived in Bowie, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC with his wife and family.

Congratulations On Your 35th Annual
Freedom Fund and Awards Banquet

We are proud to provide sponsorship that
enables the NAACP to give scholarships to a
select group of high school graduates want-
ing a degree or trade, but have limited or no
resources to attain their goal. We, working
together, can make Beaumont a better place
as well as a model city for others to follow.
