These young adults have reached a vital stage, Jamie is always willing to lend a hand,
They are ready to turn over, to the next page. I think he could make water out of sand.
A new part of their journey has just begun, Jamie, you work hard and pull your weight,
It may even be a time to increase their fun. So, a good job for you, will be your fate.

Dylan was the first of the famous five to arrive, Braydan you arrived mid-way through year ten,
And now he’s almost old enough to solo drive. In class you often forgot your paper and pen.
He was quiet and shy, but did as he was asked, Now you have accomplished your VCE,
Now there is nothing this young man cannot task. Who knows what your future could be.

He has come so far from the Dylan we knew, You have led our students with a real zest,
And now there is nothing that he cannot do. To encourage them all, to do their best.
Maybe one day we’ll see him on the Net, Good luck for the next stage of your life,
Perhaps a famous youtuber, that one is my bet. Try not to get into too much strife.

Byron was next, he arrived in year 9, Liam was last, but certainly not least,
He fit in quite quickly and settled in fine. In year 11, he arrived and was such a treat.
In Mentor Groups, we see him at his best, He quickly learned, my name is not Miss,
Guiding the little ones, who can be a test. And developed into something a little like this.

Byron has effectively led our students in sport, An asset, a proud member of our little school,
And Rog is quite proud, I’m keen to report. Liam proved himself a contender, in the swimming pool.
Good luck to you Byron, I’m sure you’ll do well, He is passionate, has heart, goals and ambition,
Make sure you come back with stories to tell. Liam, go for it, youth services will be grateful for the addition.

Jamie arrived third and to our surprise, For the five of you now, the big world awaits,
An engineer in our school, had just arrived. And I hope you all leave here as great mates.
He is very handy with gadgets and anything tech, May you dreams be big and your ambitions high,
If we don’t know how it works, he’ll know the specs. As you leave us, spread your wings and fly.

Former Staff Member I am grateful for the opportunity of introducing the new VCE
Psychology course in the 1990’s and really enjoyed teaching a
Pam Hayes subject received so well by students for many years. I really
loved those classes.
I had my first child in May 1976 and I will always have fond memories of my time at Bolac: the camps,
the following November I was ready concerts, musicals, fun runs, staff parties, the staff, the students
to accept a part time position teaching and the overall fun and enjoyment of each day at the school.

any educational initiatives with staff always keen to implement
new ideas and practices in order to improve student outcomes.
The long lasting relationships I formed with staff and students
had a great impact on my life and I remain in close contact
with many today.

Post retirement, I have done some CRT work at the school and
am often reminded of my age when students tell me I taught
their mother or father! Even more horrifying, when a prep student
tells me I taught their grandma.

A former teacher of 20 years, Ollie Matherson had her photo
hung in place of Queen Elizabeth in the link corridor wall of
fame. Ollie sat there in pride of place with her eye on all that
walked past. George Porter (Principal on my retirement) did ask
me upon my leaving how I would like to celebrate my years at
Bolac. I suggested, because I had doubled Ollie’s years at the
school, I take her place on the wall of fame with a photo of myself
but double the size. George did even better, he had a shrine of
remembrance dedicated to me erected in the courtyard for all to
see and would remain there forever, even if the school were to
burn down. I was more than happy with that, so thank you George.

I have been retired now for 4 years and live in Ballarat close to
three of my children and two gorgeous granddaughters. Although
officially retired, I spend many of my days as a CRT at Ballarat
Special School and really enjoy my time there. I hope that if I am
still there at 90 they will hang my photo in their link corridor.

Although I am working in a completely different setting, my
teaching is always influenced from my experiences at LBC, which
enabled me to teach a variety of subjects at every level P-12.

meant that most students represented the school in some form.
At school we even had yachting on the lake as an option. This was
truly a bracing experience as cold winter winds buffeted the area.

Many of our teachers were young. The training system meant that
it was compulsory for teachers in their first years to be sent where
required. There was always plenty of new, enthusiastic faces
arriving to contribute to our education. We were provided with
numerous role models and classrooms were generally very
friendly places.

School life was enriched by occasional visits from acting groups,
the screening of films in the Memorial Hall, (these was no such
things as DVDs then) a school choir and socials. Socials were
dances in the evening at the end of term or year featuring live
music and where we dressed in what we considered was the
latest fashion, but ties remained compulsory for boys and
dresses could not be too short!

An outstanding highlight of our final year was watching live the
first steps on the moon. We were crowded into the corridor and
a small portable black and white television was propped on a
cupboard. We waited for what seemed forever until the grainy
and blurry movement on the screen indicated that Neil Armstrong
had finally made it.

There was only one final certificate (Matriculation) and only one
form of assessment, the end of year exam. Pressure to succeed
was challenging. Following completion of the exams there was
nowhere else for us to go than to seek employment in the cities
or go on to University or College. None of our graduating class
remained in the district. The loss of population over the years
has been quite astounding!
