CHECKLIST FOR CHOOSING A STABLE, FARM

When visiting prospective stables and farms, look carefully at the facilities – their
condition and cleanliness, as well as the condition and well-being of the resident
horses. Talk with other owners to get a sense of the energy and attitudes of that
facility. Prior to signing a contract, you might want to ask the following questions.

What is included in the monthly board?
• What type of feed and in what amount?
• What other services, if any, does it cover?
• Are there any supplemental services offered?
• If yes, how much do they cost?

Who are the professionals coming to this barn?
• The vets, farriers, trainers, etc.
• If I use the barn trainer, what are the costs?
• Can I use my own professionals? If so, are there additional costs? Conditions?

What are the barn rules and procedures?
• Opening/closing days and hours?
• Is there a copy of the rules visible?
• Who, in the barn, do I go to with questions?
• What health protocols is the barn following for worming, vaccinations and
dentistry?

Are safety issues addressed?
• What fire fighting equipment is available?
• Are helmets encouraged for adults? And required for children?
• What, if any, liability and Care, Custody and Control insurance does the barn
carry?
• Do owners or managers live on the property?
• Is the facility in generally good repair?

Remember to always keep a copy of
everything you sign!

Maintaining Your Trailer

It’s unfortunate, but most of us do not use our horse trailers
as frequently as we would like. Whether it’s days, weeks or
months between uses, your trailer’s condition should not
be taken for granted.

No one wants to be late for a lesson, miss a show or have to cancel an anticipated
outing. More importantly, good maintenance can prevent a serious mishap that
could have catastrophic consequences.
A horse trailer should
be serviced on an
annual basis, or
every 3-5000 miles
depending on the
type of driving being
done. A thorough
service will address all
aspects of the trailer
including brakes,
bearings, wheels, tires,
floor, lights, latches,
suspension, structure
and coupler.
One of the most
commonly neglected aspects of the trailer is the breakaway system. This system is
required by law and is intended to apply breaks to the trailer in the event the trailer
ever becomes disconnected from the tow vehicle in use. Another frequent oversight
is the age of the tires. We would all like to wear out the tires from frequent use, but
reality is that most trailer tires fail due to age and UV exposure.
A regular maintenance schedule goes a long way in protecting your horse, vehicle,
trailer and you from misfortune. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Happy Trails
