UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital
In the event that your horse requires a trip to an emergency facility, we are
fortunate to live within hauling distance of the University of California, Davis, a
veterinary teaching hospital, one of only 13 veterinary universities in the US. If your
visit to Davis has been recommended by your vet chances are your vet will initiate
the process by calling the hospital and telling them about your horse’s condition
and to expect you. If it is an emergency situation that you are handling on your own
and you decide your horse should go to Davis immediately without the help of your
vet, call Davis as soon as you are able to notify them of your situation and time of
arrival.
Vets at Davis are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Stay calm and drive
carefully. For local emergency transporters, see pg 57.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
Plan Your Disaster Response Now!
Partner with another stable, farm of a similar size in another location, and be each

• One horse drinks, on average, 12 gallons per Remember, your horse’s

or pond. competence during an
• A 1,000# horse will eat a minimum at

Keep a one-week supply on hand. emergency!
• Microchip or freeze-brand your horse.
• Mark all your tack and equipment with your
name, address and phone number.
• Keep recent pictures, breed papers, available for identification or to place
on flyers.
• Maintain a first-aid kit for horses and yourself.
• Keep halters and attached lead ropes available and in good condition.
• Keep your trailer in good working order.
• Practice trailer loading your horse to ensure that in a time of emergency they
will load.
• If your horses must be evacuated, so must your barn cats and dogs. Put dogs on
a leash and cats in a carrier or pillowcase.
Wild Fire Safety
• Evacuate your horses early; don’t wait until the last minute.
• Take all medical records for your horse with you.
• If you don’t have a trailer, check with others in the area that do. Make plans for
mutual assistance.
• If you have to let horses free to fend for themselves, put on cotton halters not
nylon. Nylon melts with heat and metal gets hot enough to brand the hair and skin.
• Use latex spray paint to mark your phone number on the sides of your horse.
Earthquake Safety
• Check the condition of barn or stable. Put horses out in paddocks or pasture if
worried about structure failure during aftershocks.
• Check for gas leaks and broken water pipes; if found turn off all water and gas
around buildings. If you are on a well, there may be no power to pump water
unless you have a generator.
• Check out physical condition of horses and medically treat as needed.
