172 Darren Almond Fullmoon@Oregon Coast 2008 C-print 47 11⁄16 ×47 11⁄16 in. © Darren Almond. Courtesy White Cube Darren Almond is a conceptual artist interested in the passage of time. At first glance this photograph appears to be a straightforward picture of a foggy landscape or one that has been digitally manipulated. Almond however took this photo during a full moon on a particularly clear night and left the camera shutter open for fifteen minutes. As the artist has explained, his full-moon photographs are intentionally concerned with memory and chance, with mobilizing light and time, and in locations untouched by artificial light.

174 Mary Ellen Carroll No On 1994 Plexiglas, aluminum, clock mechanism (two clocks) 17×17×4 in. Time appears frozen in Mary Ellen Carroll’s artwork titled No On. The Greek word “Telos,” (meaning ultimate goal) which the artist has written on the face of both clocks, serves as an ironic counterpoint to the cyclical and ultimately static image of time.

176 Walead Beshty Transparency (Positive) [Fuji Provia Color Film: October 19-October 21, 2007 ORD/LAXLAX/ORD] 2009 Inkjet print on Silver Rag paper 69×53½ in. Courtesy the artist and Petzel, New York The artist Walead Beshty is concerned with in-between spaces and what happens to an artwork as it moves through such spaces. This photograph, from the artist’s Transparencies series, was made by passing unused film through LAX’s security x-ray machine. The photo documents its own movement in washes of color and line, offering an image of its liminal moments before embarking on a new journey.
