THE FRENCH VISIT
Twenty-five students and two teachers of Lycée l'Oiselet Bougouin Jaillieu, France visited Suncity from 14 to 24 October
2019. Participation is the best method of education, hence, after their welcome on 16 October, their activities began. The
first one was learning greetings in Hindi. In the ISA panel discussion on Our Monuments Under Siege, the French students
exchanged notes on the threat faced by monuments in both countries and the laws to preserve them. Each Day Earth Day
was their science activity, focusing on waste management in French schools, society and country. They enjoyed the
mathematics quiz during the subject week. Learning a Hindi song and Bhangra came as a welcome break. Rangoli making
activity got them down on their hands and knees and they almost became part of the rangoli patterns. They participated in
a discussion with Ms. Marina Torchia, the environmentalist,  who inspired everyone to protect the environment. A Posy of
Performing Arts dramatized famous works from across the world. Financial Literacy Project helped them to see wisdom in
thrift. They visited Project Bagiya, a school for under-privileged children on 18 October. Their foreign hands looked no
different after the Bagiya students lovingly applied henna on them. They loved Indian sweets but enjoyed making them
more. At the Chairman Diwali get together in the evening, they were hardly discernible in their Indian attires. The Taj
Mahal is a must during every student exchange of which they had their visiting share on 19 October. Ms. Dharini Jain, a
Suncity parent, brought great joy and blessing to this visit by hosting a lunch at her place. Dilli Haat, Gurudwara Bangla
Sahib and Waste to Wonder Park topped their itinerary on 20 October. Two days later, they participated in Amnesty
International under the aegis of ISA. Chocolate transcends culture. They made some under the guidance of The Chocolate
Foundation as a culmination. Madam Marie Doublier, attaché, French Embassy was the special guest at the closing
ceremony on 23 October. The French carried the whole programme with their stunning Bhangra performance and the
rendition of a Hindi song, based on the seven musical notes and their heartfelt thanks to the host families and the school.
They had experienced the warmth of our hearts but just before the airport, they made a trip to Anandgram for a peep into
India's soul.

SENSITIZING

Urban education entails higher engagement in social sensitization programmes.
Students of grade XII C organised a special assembly to honour and acknowledge workers on
the occasion of Labour Day. The enthusiasm showed through their song and presentations,
especially the interviews of the housekeeping, security, bus staff and everyone else working
behind the scenes to make each day of school fruitful.

An awareness programme was carried out by students to spread
knowledge about vector borne diseases like dengue, malaria,
chickengunia in nearby slums and distributed mosquito coils, mosquito
repellent creams and gels to the needy. They had prepared informative
charts and slogans to impart the knowledge about such diseases. The
empathy, sensitivity and care truly reflected in the way they interacted
with the children.

Grade X celebrated World Elders' Day on 1 October
2019 under the aegis of Earth Savior Foundation. The
old age home inmates attended the assembly, were
served breakfast in the refectory. They were given
Thank You cards as a token of gratitude. This was done
under TRIP, a part of their English syllabus.

A conference on autism was held at Scottish High International School. The message was
awareness is the greatest support. Dr. Lim Hock, Guest of Honor, sensitized the audience
towards autistic children and how early diagnosis and intervention could help in dealing
with it. An exhibition showcased the works of autistic children. A panel discussion was
conducted by the experts followed by an interesting round of question and answers.

‘Go With the Flow’ was about seeing the 'woman' outside the context of the 'ornamental'.
The menstrual health campaign was launched by three students of Grade XII in the
month of March. They conducted their first workshop in the school on 6 July 2019 for all
female workers. The entire lady staff, comprising lady guards, nannies and housekeeping
were surveyed about their preferred products, support by family, and perceptions. They
also gave an educational presentation broadly covering several issues. The team was
delighted by a participant proposing a solution to the problem of the disposal of used
pads. They were distributed 900 biodegradable pads with the aid of ‘Laiqa’, a sanitary pad
company.
Young fingers fashioned beautiful rakhis for the weather beaten wrists of the jawans
guarding the frontiers of the nation. This is the bond that keeps sisters united with
brothers. This is the bandhan that keeps all of us from getting divided. This activity was
made possible by the Craft Club in collaboration with Dainik Jagran.

There is no such thing as ideal death. The heart does not get tired. It just stops. But there are warning signs; there

are symptoms that this is going to happen. Fortis Healthcare organized an awareness session for students of

grades IX and XI on 12 December 2019 to create awareness about heart stroke and to train the students in

identifying its symptoms. Dr. B. Das, a leading neurologist at Fortis healthcare, conducted the interactive session.

Students were shown videos to identify the symptoms of stroke in a better way.

The talk part of the touch session was about good and bad touch and related adolescence issues. The resource

person, Ms. Aleena Ali, therapist and psychologist at Artemis Hospital, also counseled students about the value of

respecting each other’s personal space. 150

CAREER APTITUDE

Senior students had counselling guidance and support from career expert, Tanushree Bhattacharya, MD,
University of British Columbia, who conducted an informative session about career aptitude, approaches and
challenges, how to deal with them, and how to narrow down the range of options.
Career clients of grades X and XII attended a Masterclass by Dr. Jeremy Brown from Newcastle University on 2
September, 2019 on Genetic Engineering and Gene Therapy such as food produced from genetically engineered
crops, animals engineered for the production of therapeutic drugs and therapies for treatment of diseases and
technologies to modify crops, animals and human cells, as well as their benefits and risks.
Rohan Gulati referenced his own distinction at Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad. He is the head of the Centre for
Alternative Dispute Resolution, a student run centre that aims to effectively train students in this field. An
alumnus of the school, from the batch of 2017, he interacted with senior students, interested in pursuing a career
in law and provided valuable insights and even real-life cases to help them get a better understanding of the
profession.

FRONTIERS OF LEARNING

UNIVERSITY FAIRS
In the annual glocalization of university representation, seventeen US and European institutes of repute shared
information about courses and scholarship opportunities with senior students on 9 April 2019. Some noteworthy
names are: Istituto Marangoni (London-Milan-Paris), ESSEC Business School (France), Swiss Education, University of
Wisconsin (USA), Singapore Institute of Management, IE University (Spain), EcoleHôtelière de Lausanne, Trinity
College (Dublin), St. George's University (Grenada) and UNSW (Australia).
UK universities set up shop on the premise of foreign learning on 2 September 2019. Senior students of XI and XII
interfaced with the representatives of: University of Brunel, University East Anglia, Nottingham Trent University,
University of Swansea, University of Essex, University of Westminster, University of Bristol, Newcastle University and
Queens University Belfast.

MUSINGS OF THE MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT OUTDOORS
Students had a new classroom: the Aravalis. As journey
is a training of sorts, the nature walk revealed to them
their own strengths and weaknesses and to discover to
their surprise their attraction to the flora and the fauna
(including a lone peacock). This is the best way to
sensitize young minds and hearts to the threat, nature
faces from excessive human activity such as
construction.
Biology students of grade XII conducted a survey on the
impact of unprecedented construction and mining in the
Aravalis. They carried out on-the-spot sample analysis
of soil and plant species.
Creation stems from recreation. The key is participation
in open spaces encompassed by nature. The trip to
Madhavgarh Farms engendered this on 15 February
2020. The Adventure Sports Venue provided a perfect
opportunity for students to plunge headlong into group,
individual, adventure and leadership sports, games and
activities.

152

Teaching is no walk in the park but Binsar,
Uttarakhand became just that kind of experience
from 22 to 25 May 2019.

TEACHER'S DAY

The complaining communities of teacher and student suddenly take a turn for the best for a day. Every school’s story
on September 5 is that every teacher’s day is counted as a milestone in every teacher’s life. In Suncity, however,
expectations were exceeded by the efforts of the students. Still new to their first-year feel, the host coordinators
(read students) of grade XI celebrated the day as the birthday of the teacher in each student’s life. The entertainment
fiesta from the beginning to the end was as follows: Hours best spent in front of the cameras in the grand assemblies,
the lesser and the greater feasts, skits that showed how well the teacher has been read with the books and the notes,
not to mention the sacred dances and the thanksgiving songs. Determined to be great, the teachers outdanced the
kids in the jam session. In between, there was momentary transformation of the teacher into a comedian, singer or
model. This is the stuff of teacher’s day in Suncity.

CHILDREN'S DAY

The thrill of being a child is experienced by children all the time but the vibes get stronger on Children's Day. The
highlight of the day was the grand fanfare witnessed in the special assembly conducted by the teachers for their dear
students.

SATURNALIA SATURNALIA

December has a different appeal in Suncity with the production hustle of Saturnalia, culminating in the bustle of
pageantry for four days, during which the instrumentalists, the singers, the actors and the comperes have their
day. Saturnalia is Suncity’s Annual Fiesta and for the middle and senior school, it culminated on 21st December
2019. The theme was Nurture Nature. Dr. Sarvesh Naidu, Executive Director, Pathways was the Guest of Honour.
The other esteemed persons, gracing the occasion, were Mr. LN Goel, Management Trustee, Mr Ankit Goel,
Chairman, Suncity schools and Mrs. Rupa Chakravarty, Director, Suncity schools. Dr. Sarvesh Naidu spoke about
progressive education, 21st century jobs and a new future for the next generation in his address. After the arrival
of the luminaries, the lamp was lighted (always the utopian moment of every beginning), going over to the
invocation (shlokas to establish the mythology of human history from vedic times till date), followed by music (an
interlude of the forms of fusion), the annual report (with stark clarity that prose alone makes possible), the
English play (simply epic in originality, story and presentation), the scintillating Hindi play (made its peace with
all the stakeholders finally), the prize distribution (celebrating excellence through perseverance), the grand finale
(method dancing that got a standing ovation for as long as it was possible and the Director actually wept at its
macabre beauty) and the vote of  thanks (Head Boy’s golden words of gratitude). The comperes must be mentioned
since they carried the whole show from the beginning (their discourse was drama in its own right) to the end
(with a touch of the lyricist, they administered the oath to conserve nature).

VANITY FAIR
A winter outdoors. The buoyant pavilions. The sanction of extravaganza. Music. Dance. Colour. Décor. Games.
Rides. Art. Books. Handicrafts. Luck. Race. Chocolate. Street foods. Charity. Prizes. It was Vanity Fair all right! The
Chief Guest was Mr Ankit Goyal, Chairman of Suncity Schools. Parents, students, teachers and visitors enjoyed
themselves thoroughly in the fair’s fun and frolic on 25 January 2020. The proceeds went to Arpan, a Suncity
initiative for underprivileged children. The prizes for the stalls were won by grade V for The Best Decorated Stall
and The Most Profitable Stall and grade IV for The Most Sanskaar Focused Stall. The Cleanest Stall prize went to
EYP. The lucky draw winners were the happiest with their vain (what is vanity all about?) wins such as LED TV,
bicycle, holiday packages and mobile phones!

NATIONAL SCIENCE EXHIBITION
For three days, Suncity was a universe of science projects from all over India, each showcasing a conceptual
understanding of sustainable applications of science in the future. The school hosted CBSE’s National Science
Exhibition from 16 to 18 January 2020 on the theme Science and Technology for Sustainable Development with a
Thrust on Water Conservation. Students from CBSE affiliated schools researched and prepared models and
projects that were either working or static and were related to the main theme. A total of 585 schools from across
the country participated. The Chief Guests on the inaugural day were Ms. Anita Karwal, Chairperson CBSE; Dr.
Joseph Emmanuel, Director, Academics and Dr. Sweta Singh, Joint Director, CBSE. A panel of esteemed judges
selected 29 innovative models as winners in each category. The Chief Guests on the closing day were Dr. Bishwajit
Saha, Director, Training and Skill Education and Mr. Manoj Srivastava, Director, Professional Education, CBSE.
Each of the 29 winning schools was awarded a cheque of Rs. 5000 and the National Winner's Certificate.

INTER-HOUSE DANCE COMPETITION
Dance was an interlude in the rigors of academe.
The spectacle in the auditorium was the Middle and
Senior School Inter-House Dance Competition on
27 July 2019. With foot tapping music, the dance
troupes of the four Houses presented concept
dances, manipulating the judgment from the
beginning to the end. Arctic House won the contest.
The choreography of the other Houses was no less
elastic. The music was simply in the limbs. The
prima ballerina of the show, however, was from XII
D, Indian House.
