Waterfall of Death
Hello! My name is Elena and I am about to tell you a story. A story I question myself
if what happened was real or not… something that had happened to me when I was
12 years old.
I was going with my class on a trip to the Amazon Jungle. The trip was for 2 nights
and 3 days. When we reached the camp, I was very excited. We would be staying in
tents, which was fine with me. We would be learning the ways how to survive in a
jungle. A group of kids in my class were devastated, one girl in particular, Sarina. I
know this is bad thing to say, but I have to, she was sassy, selfish, a drama queen,
she was really short tempered and I hated her. We were assigned in groups of two,
to live in the tent. I hoped that I would get my best friend, Amanda, but of course it
had to be Sarina. We were allowed to freshen up and then to meet back at the
entrance where the tour would start. You probably know what Sarina would do, she
started begging the teacher to trade me with someone else. (I was secretly hoping
that the teacher would agree, but of course she didn’t). After 30 minutes of begging,
Sarina came into the tent.
“She didn’t listen, did she,” I asked, already knowing the answer.
“No she didn’t, but you will follow my rules,” Sarina said
“What rules?”
“I get to use your make up and I sleep on 3/4th of the bed.”
“You do know that we have separate sleeping bags, and that I never carry make
up, whatsoever.”
“WHAT! YOU DON’T CARRY MAKE UP!”
“Never do and never will. Anyway I’m ready and I am going out to meet Amanda.
See you later.”
I went to meet Amanda and I told her what happened, once I was done, she started
laughing hysterically. I’ll spare you the details. So, Sarina was the last one to get out,
figures, since she needed 10 hours to get ready, the first thing she did was glare at
me and then went to her friends probably to gossip and tell them that I don’t carry
make up. Our instructor blew his whistle. He told us that we would each be given
maps in case we got lost, and he said that if we did get lost, we could never go to
the landmark marked ‘Waterfall of Death.’
continued to next page…….
When we reached the Amazon, I was amazed, fascinated. There were canopy trees,
flowers and animals I have never seen before. When the tour started, he started
explaining the exotic species of plants and animals that lived and grew there blah,
blah, blah. I still wondered why we couldn’t go to the Waterfall of Death. I know that’s
the name, but still, anyone could name a landmark like that. So… I did the sensible
thing, I went to that very place. I sneaked out of the group, which wasn’t very hard
because everyone was looking at the plants sir was describing, except for Sarina, who
was complaining about mosquitos. I took out my map and started going towards the
direction of the waterfall. When I was about to give up, I heard rushing water. I
followed the sound. I finally reached the waterfall and my jaws dropped. It was
beautiful, lush and beautiful. I wanted to stay there, but I knew I couldn’t and I needed
to get back before anyone realized I was missing. I started retracing my steps.
Few hours later.
“How did I not find my class,” I said out loud.
The sun was already dipping in the horizon. I had no water left and I was thirsty. I
decided going back to the waterfall. When I reached the landmark, it was completely
different. The waterfall was no longer lush, it was muddy and dirty. I wasn’t paying
much attention though. I was thirsty and tired, I had eaten all my food and I had
nothing left. My feet were paining from walking so much. Bad thoughts flooded in my
mind; I should’ve stayed with my class, I should’ve never come here and now I am
never going to get home. I kicked a rock in the water out of anger.
“Stop it Elena, you WILL get home,” I said to myself, but I knew I couldn’t, I was too
tired to take another step, my knees buckled and I fainted.
I woke up squinting in the harsh sunlight. I couldn’t remember where I was until it hit
me. I was at the Waterfall of Death. I stood up, dizzy. I looked up and saw no waterfall.
“That’s weird,” I said when, suddenly, the ground started shaking and I started
falling. Deeper and deeper.
“Gotcha,” I heard someone say, and then I hit the ground with a thud and lost
consciousness.
I woke up in my bedroom, beaded with sweat.
“Oh good! That was just a nightmare,” I said to myself.
I got up and looked at myself in the mirror; I was covered in dust with minor scratches
and bruises.
“But if that was real, then how did I get here…. and most importantly, who said
gotcha,” I thought about it over and over again but it has always remained a mystery to
me.

THE UNSTOPPABLE RISE OF VEGETARIANISM
“You can judge a man's true character by the way he treats his fellow animals.”- Paul McCartney
Sometime back Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Airlines, announced that he was
giving up eating beef after studying its impact on the environment. This is not the first
time an international thought leader has pronounced his love of a meat-free life. There
are many reasons including ethical, environment impact, health related etc., but the
ultimate goal should be one- to adopt cruelty free healthy lifestyle-not only for us but
for all the living beings of our planet Earth.
As said by Paul McCartney “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a
vegetarian.” Apart from being killed mercilessly, worldwide animals are raised in subpar
conditions, confined in small overcrowded cages, kept indoor, misuse of antibiotics,
and abusive handling by workers. Every living creature, like humans require basic
conditions, dignity and above all right to live.
Greenhouse gas emissions associated with 2,000-calorie diets are twice as high in meat
eaters compared to vegan dieters, according to a 2014 review in Climate Change. Meat
production creates greenhouse gas emissions as factory farm animals produce methane
during food digestion and faeces excretion. Lowering greenhouse gas emissions could
have a beneficial impact on global warming and climate change because greenhouse
gases in Earth's atmosphere trap the sun's rays and increase temperature.
Albert Einstein once rightly said, “Nothing will benefit human health and increase
chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution of a vegetarian diet.”
According to studies, adopting a vegetarian diet is one of the most effective ways to
lower body mass index (BMI), thus reducing obesity. The American Heart Association
says vegetarian diets may lower high blood pressure and coronary heart disease
because plant-based diets tend to be lower in cholesterol, saturated fat, and total fat.
The World Health Organization has determined that dietary factors account for at least
30 percent of all cancers in Western countries.
Vegetarian diet proves to be holistic for mental and physical health, example are galore
in all walks of life. Virat Kohli, Lionel Messi, Venus Williams, Carl Lewis, Pythagoras,
George Bernard Shaw, Abdul Kalam Azad, Narendra Modi, Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena
Kapoor, Kailash Satyarthi, the list continues.
Ultimately diet is a personal decision but while choosing it, each one should weigh
down the impact it causes on the environment, other living beings and our health.

THE GIRL
Once there was a girl. She was always interested talking about her beauty, clothes and
shopping. ‘Hey see, my nail paint’. ‘Did you notice how am I looking?’
Her father had an eye over her area of interests. It all started when the girl was
standing on the table that day. ‘Hey, Aarvi can you please give me a glass of water?’
‘Ok’, she started to get down but father asked her to jump from there.
‘No, no, no, no, no! I am scared’ Aarvi said.
‘What! Can’t you jump from there?’ Father was surprised. ‘Then hold my hand.’
‘Ok’ she jumped thrice, though she didn’t notice that she had started jumping on her
own.
So her father enrolled her for some fun exercises. He would often say, ‘2 more jumps, 5
more jumps!’ or ‘ let us race’, etc. He also inspired her to do household chores and
changed her looks, “swag, yo!”
And all exercises went like this. Initially she would cry, ‘I don’t want to do it! I can’t do.’
But her father would keep enrolling her by motivating and inspiring.
Her father created a placebo effect in her mind.
Now she invented her own exercises and showed them to her friends. ‘Hey, can you do
this?’ No interest in beauty or hair style or looks now. She discovered many other areas
which she could flaunt now.
She is lucky to have a lovely father! Now when her friends come they are also
fascinated and started doing this meaningful stuff like exercise, jumping, running,
fitness etc .

You Can’t Blend In, When You Were Born To Stand Out…
Everyone in the world is unique,
To become like others is all the sleek,
If you try to blend in,
It is nothing but a sin.
Your personality is not the colour of your hair,
Or the clothes you wear, you are the path you’ve lead.
You are the books you’ve read.
People born to stand out,
Should not run off the mill, just remember that the will.
People are different and people will stare,
But there friends and family there,
People are odd, people are new,
What if you were too?
Let those people fit in,
One they I hope they do.

Books-My favourite kind of entertainment
Books are a wonderful thing. Keeping man’s spirit alive for centuries, they have
proved to be very loyal. I have been transported to many places through my
books. I have been to “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry”, the
battlefield where the “Trojans” and the “Olympians” fought, the magic tree house
and to many more places through books. They vary from comedy to drama,
history to science and so many more subjects. There is a quote which says, “today
a reader, tomorrow a leader”. I think that this means that we are young and when
we read it fills our mind with wonder, we start believing that the impossible can
be possible. With the determination to make the impossible possible, we can do
anything, this is what makes us leaders. My bond with my precious books will
never be broken.

GENIE AND THE FOOLISH MAN
Once in a small village, there was too much poverty. Although the villagers had to
struggle hard for a living, still they lived happily because they loved each other. Mohan, a
farmer, used to dream of a big house and lots of money. One day, he found a note which
read,
“Lush farms, Mountain Tall.
Climb it, like a wall.
Rub the Magic Lamp, golden and small.
Genie appears, will give you all.”
Mohan was excited and he quickly followed. The Genie agreed to grant his wish on the
condition that he will have to leave his family behind. Mohan agreed promptly. In the
flash of a second, the Genie teleported Mohan to a very big city. Mohan was delighted to
see his new house which was much bigger than his old hut. He led a happy life for a few
years.
Then once, on his birthday, he decided to invite all his old friends from the village but he
could not contact anyone. He became sad and his health started failing. He remembered
the Magic Lamp that he had brought with him. He requested the Genie to turn him poor
again.
The Genie disagreed. He said, “I cannot do this. It was very foolish of you to have left your
family and friends for money.” Mohan was disappointed. He started crying. The genie
said, “If you agree to distribute your wealth in your village, I can take you back.” Mohan
wiped his tears and agreed happily. The genie brought him back to his village. Mohan did
what he was told and hugged everyone. The villagers were no longer poor and lived a
better life thereafter.

MY STRUGGLE FOR A DOG
Golden Retriever. Maltese. Bichon Frise. Labradors. These are just some of my favorite dog
breeds. I am a serious dog lover. I love ANYTHING at all to do with dogs. But the funny thing is,
I’ve never owned one.
In fact, the only reason I know the names of dog breeds is because of my tireless research on
dogs. I can identify the breed of almost any dog when I spot it. Most of the time I can also tell
the special care that the particular breed needs. Every dog need s their own special care apart
from the common care that every dog needs, like brushing of their hair and regular grooming.
For example, pugs have folds of skin on their cute little faces. They need cleaning under these
folds if they don’t want to develop nasty infections. However, dogs like Labradors don’t have
these folds and they don’t need this type of care.
I have searched around 50 websites to know more and more about dogs. I just can’t have
enough of them!
Now back to my story. After researching came the hardest part: convincing my parents to buy
me a dog. To make a long story short: I FAILED MISERABLY. I walked up to them and said,
‘Mom, Dad?’
‘Yeah?’
‘Can I have a dog, please? I promise to do all the work! I’ll walk him, feed him, bathe him,
everything! I’ll even take him to the vet if you like! And I’ll use my birthday money to pay for
his expenses! Please, Mom, Dad?
My parents sighed.
‘And Naveli, dear, who is going to take care of him when we are gone during the summer and
winter holidays?’, said my mom.
I pondered over this question for a while. I hadn’t thought of this. Really, who will take care of
him when we are gone on holidays?
But then the gears in my brain started turning. I said triumphantly, ‘We can admit him in a
night boarding facility for pets! There are plenty of them!’
My parents sighed again.
‘I’m really sorry to say this, Naveli’,said my dad,’but you simply cannot have a dog.’
I stared at them. I could not believe my ears. After so much hard work, so much research, all I
get is a no? I was furious with my parents. ‘Why?’ I questioned angrily.
‘For a number of reasons’, said my dad.
‘Name one.’I snapped.
But I didn’t get an answer. Me and my parents had a couple of arguments, and then they told
me to go to bed.
So, it’s been a long time, but I still haven’t got a dog. But at least my parents allowed me to
keep fish and birds! So, they are showing some signs of progress. I’m still trying my best to
persuade them into getting me a dog, but it’s a slow process. But don’t worry, because I know
for sure that one day, I will get a dog.

WILDLIFE [ENDANGERED ANIMAL]
In this beautiful world of ours a lot of animal species are already living under danger of
extinction and need our immediate help to live peacefully and not die because of our
faults or needs. Animals like dodo are already extinct [which means they have already
vanished from this earth] due to people hunting them for food. The sabre toothed tiger
have also extinct because of the weather change from cold to warm. The main reasons
for their extinction are as followed.
Many animals like tigers, leopards, turtles and rhinos are being hunted or they are
dying due to human greed. Many people hunt them for leather, fur, meat, teeth or
horns.
The other biggest reason is disposal of waste to oceans and landfills. Have you ever
wondered where your rubbish goes? Well some of your rubbish is reusable or
recyclable, but more than half of your rubbish is thrown into the sea and used as
landfills, which ruins the nature. Poor animals eat it thinking as food. For example the
leatherback turtle thinks a plastic bag is its favourite food, a jellyfish and eats it. Or a
bird thinks a plastic tube is a toy and then its wings get trapped in it.
And one last factor that plays an important role in displacing many species from their
home is, deforestation. It is the process of cutting down of trees rapidly for human use.
We should try and stop deforestation. Animals like giraffes, tigers, etc are falling short
of their habitat due to this process and hence falling prey of competition for the space.
There are lot of big running projects to save the natrue and animals such as the Project
Tiger. There are many national parks also setup by the government of India to provide
natural habitat to such endangered animals like the Kaziranga national park, the Jim
Corbett national park and the Sundarbans national park.
It’s important that we also understand our responsibilities as individuals to save the
nature. Even you can do many things to help these poor animals survive like:
Do not use leather things.
Help in planting trees.
Don’t encourage people to hunt animals.
Don’t use to much of wooden furniture and don’t waste paper.
Support the goverment to make more national parks.
All these things can help save many animals. Each helping hand will count to save lives.

Dear Principal Mam,
This morning I witnessed something which makes me proud to be
part of the institution yet again! I had no doubt in the institution
from Day1 I became a part of it but this morning while I was
rushing to attend the class assembly of my daughter I saw you
standing at the gate of senior foyer telling the kids how important
it is for them to come in on time. The kind of effort been put in by
the institution in every child to ensure he/she succeeds in life and
be a good human being is amazing. I have been part of the
institution for more than 3 years now and have no words to
describe how thankful I am to the teachers, Ritu Mam and the
whole staff to help our kids nurture. When my daughter walks out
from home in the school bus I know she is in safe hands and have
nothing to worry about. Thanks for giving the second home to my
daughter.
Appreciate all your support.
