4 Dear neighbours, Welcome to this month’s issue of the Melton Messenger, the free monthly local directory of businesses and services suggested by yourselves for yourselves. With the May Bank Holidays now behind us—and I hope that any Coronation celebrations that you had went well - It’s time to look forward to my favourite time of the year. Yes we are taking part in “No Mow May “ again this year ( sorry neighbours!) This will be the third year that we have done this and I have definitely noticed a wider variety of wild flowers and insects arriving on our lawn. ( details at plantlife.org.uk in case you are interested ) As we are starting to deliver to some of the newer estates that are becoming populated in and around Melton, it may be the first time that you have seen a Messenger. I do hope that you find our publication useful. If you have friends who don’t get one delivered and would like a copy we are happy to post one out if you send us a stamped addressed A5 envelope. Well done to Simon Chalmers from Melton who won the pizza meal for two in last month’s mag. It seems that many of you like pizza as we had lots of entries. Pizzas were on pages 10,37,38 & 63 Thank you to all those that entered. This month you could win two tickets to see the latest MMTC’s production of My Fair Lady. Finally don’t forget that it’s Fathers Day coming up in June and do check out our events diary and community events at the back of the directory. As always please do let us know of any good services that you have used lately and think should be with us! [email protected] Kind regards Debbie Ross It’s easy to be in the Most importantly - it works. Thousands of residents use this publication every month to source local products and services. Fast access to private medical specialists Recuperate with your own private room, TV & bathroom Ongoing broker support for advice, administration and management of premiums Reward schemes for corporate policies Early diagnosis on medical worries giving peace of mind or fast track on treatment 10 Private Medical Insurance Companies & Individuals No NHS waiting times… straight to private For more infomation call us on: 0800 999 2205 or 07419 764 565 www.medicalmadeeasy.co.uk [email protected] Private health insurance generally covers the cost of private consultations, treatments and immediate aftercare as an inpatient. Some policies also pay for outpatient care, such as physiotherapy. Employers can offer this type of insurance as a benefit to their employees, but if you’re thinking of taking out your own policy, how do you know if it’s going to be worthwhile? What benefits might be covered? These vary according to the monthly premiums, with comprehensive policies offering the greatest level of cover. A general outline of the main benefits may include: Private consultations Anaesthesia Inpatient stays for investigative tests, surgery, or immediate post-treatment care Treatments and procedures as a day patient Outpatient treatments and aftercare - physiotherapy or hydrotherapy etc. How does private health insurance work? These are designed to work alongside NHS services, so your GP would need to refer you for a private consultation. Policies are renewed annually, with monetary excesses applying in the same way as with other forms of insurance. The insurer sets a limit on the amount of cover available to you annually. They define the benefits, plus any exclusions that apply - a pre-existing illness, for example - in the policy document. Why might you decide to take out private health insurance? You need fast access to a consultation, investigative procedure, or treatment Treatment isn’t available on the NHS You’re employed, but don’t receive private health insurance as a benefit You’d like to see a particular consultant, or require a specialist referral You want the comfort of a private room You don’t want to wait for physiotherapy after surgery What are the potential drawbacks of private medical insurance? Policies are costly, with premiums increasing every year and some health conditions are excluded, so a private healthcare policy may not cover all your medical needs. You have to pay an excess each year and the insurer sets limits on the amount of cover available for each condition, each type of treatment, and an overall amount in the policy year. How much will it cost? Various factors are taken into account by insurers when setting the price of private healthcare premiums - these include (but are not limited to): Age, existing health, individual and family medical history and lifestyle, and the types of cover required. Alternatives to private health insurance If you have residual income or existing savings, you could set aside a sum to cover a proportion of future treatments. Also paying only for the initial consultation is also an option if you require an urgent medical opinion. The consultant would then refer you back to the NHS for treatment, if necessary. Healthcare cash plans also exist that help you cover your medical costs. In this case you’re refunded the costs that you pay up front, up to pre-agreed limits. www.money.co.uk/health-insurance/howdoes-health-insurance-work.htm Is It Worthwhile Taking Out Private Health Insurance?

Full of Osman’s trademark charm, insight and intelligence, this is the third novel in his record-breaking, million-copy bestselling Thursday Murder Club series. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger Regularly voted one of the best English-language novels of the past 100 years, this witty, wise and bittersweet 1951 novel is a tale of post-war alienation told by angst-ridden 17-year-old Holden Caulfield as he grapples with growing up, loss, sex, depression, his identity, and understanding the events that shaped him. 16 Many years ago, I was a consultant in all things tech, where work involved the development of medical and nursing training systems, music studios and green screen virtual sets, systems design and builds. As a result of current projects today, two past projects have recently been in my thoughts…… Back in the late 90’s I provided technical advice for a PhD project consisting of a cutting-edge dance routine. The dancer performed wearing a motion capture suit which enabled all their motions to be converted to clips of an animated computer dancer. This was then projected onto pseudo 3D translucent screens on the stage. Each short clip was provided, from a digital console to a Video DJ, who could in real-time, project these videos, integrated with the original dancer dancing live, with her own projected-self animation. Presented in a fabulous Greek theatre, the results were fantastic and very special. In the second project, I was approached by someone who provided specialist Chamber Music weekend escapes, enabling up and coming and more famous musicians to perform a number of intimate recitals in front of a small audience. The customer requested full HD and Dolby surround sound recordings of every part of the event, without any of the cameras, microphones and equipment being visible or ruining the atmosphere, ambience or aesthetics of the truly spectacular French Château. The aim was to edit and produce a professional fully completed DVD to gift to the guests a memento of their experience as they left. Motion capture, virtual reality and tech has moved on a lot since then, but what we didn’t know at the time, was that these two projects were prime examples of CREATECH. Createch characterises the role of technology within the creative industries. The piece of technology, either used as, designed to, or in a new and novel way, to create an innovative artistic piece. This could be when a Studio uses new 3D camera technologies to create new viewing experiences, or Audio engineers creating a 360 degree audio canvas as in an original listening event. The use of tech in art is not a new thing, but the term Createch has elevated the process into mainstream business. The creative industries in the UK are one of the fastest growing sectors with one in eight businesses being part of this emerging realisation of tech within the arts. This growth has been over four times faster than the UK economy as a whole. Visionary Trends still often provides technological consultancy to companies in Elstree Studios, or to design companies providing Digital Media Signage through distributed media networks. But we are always looking for exciting, new and interesting ways to harness the incredible possibilities of technology, especially to creatives who perhaps don’t have the technical knowledge to approach different equipment for their projects. Should you have such projects in mind, or just want a chat about ideas, we are ready and just love providing insight and imaginative technological solutions to help people achieve their inventive goals. James Trend Createch - Not so boring computer technology

20 Radiators are often-overlooked essentials, but over time, rust, corrosion and blockages can build up. Chemical ‘flushing’ and regular bleeding will help, but sometimes radiators need replacing because a new boiler, with increased pressure, causes leaks, or you may be installing an entirely new home heating system such as a heat pump. Extra efficiency Modern radiators heat up more quickly and can be 50% more energy-efficient than old models (pre-2000). Today’s radiators come in an array of sizes, shapes, materials and colours, to let you complement your design scheme and even add a dash of style. Where to start Start by calculating the heat output required for each room in BTUs (British Thermal Units). The next task is to look at each space and work out what size and shape of radiator you want to install. You may even like the look of the traditional column radiator, while in a bathroom a heated towel rail is a great choice. A choice of materials The vast majority of modern radiators are made from mild steel. Other options include stainless steel (more expensive, but less prone to rust build-up) and aluminium, which is the most expensive option but also the most efficient and the greenest to manufacture. Stone, glass and brass radiators are also available. Positioning your radiators Radiators are best placed in the coldest part of the room, which always used to be under a single-glazed window. In well-insulated homes this principle is less important, and you can put radiators wherever you wish, depending on the positions of your furnishings, and whether you want them to blend in or stand out. Don’t block them with long curtains or bulky furniture, and in period houses aim for symmetry with radiators placed centrally on a wall. Design possibilities Typically it’s a case of choosing the radiator material you prefer and deciding on a style and colour, though where space is limited or awkward you may need to research a few different solutions. It could be a corner radiator, a curved one for under a bay window, one that’s completely flat, one with a mirror finish, or one including a bench seat. There is a range of radiators shaped like abstract wall art and, increasingly, radiators are available in a wide variety of powder-coated colours. No longer do radiators have to be an unseen necessity – both attractive and efficient, they may well be the new heroes of your home. by Katherine Sorrell Interiors -The right radiators 01664 772 24 7 Gas Boilers Cooker & Fire Repairs Servicing & Installation Call the office on:

24 ITEMS BOUGHT & SOLD Open Mon Sat 9am to 4pm Feel free to come in to browse and chat What did we find out about our lovely embossed aqua glass Codd bottle from Mill Street Works in Melton Mowbray ? Thank you for all those readers who contacted us with information both about the bottle and the company from which it came. Francis Moore sent us this photo of a very handsome earthenware jar that her late grandfather bought several decades ago. It has the same company name painted on its side... We think it may have contained ginger beer. John Green, a past collector of many things including bottles, was keen to tell us that our bottle was designed to hold mineral water ( or flavoured fizzy drinks such as lemonade as we know them today) using the patented glass marble inside the bottles neck to trap the gas and stop the bubbles escaping. They are very collectable, but not easy to find complete. In the past children liked to break the bottles open to get at the glass marble inside. Codd bottles were invented by Hiram Codd in 1872. They were discontinued in England in the 1930’s, but are still manufactured in India and Japan. Another reader Joe Ecob kindly sent us valuable information on the local company itself. Gray & son, mineral water manufacturers was run by Frank Gray and operated behind the Old Manor House in Mill Street, Melton from c. 1910-1932, having taken over from, James Bollands ( Fox Inn Leics St.MM. ) who also used Codd neck bottles. Gray & son then were taken over by the Melton Mowbray Mineral Company in 1932. The bottles they used were actually made in a different part of the country. Our bottle has a makers name on the back - E. Breffit &Co, Castleford, England. This factory produced bottles from 1844 to 1921. This month’s memorable object is this bus (?) ticket from “A. Farrow & Sons, Motor Service” on one side and “Farrows Pies & Sausage” on the other. Do you have any memories or information about this company ? Do you know what this would've been for and what time period it was made? We would love to hear from you! If you have a locally linked vintage object that you think we would all find interesting and would like to find out some information on its history, then please do send us a photo to [email protected] Aprox size is 6.4 x 3cm Melton memories and memorable objects

26 Give open water swimming a try this summer Open water swimming is growing in popularity for its many health benefits, and with a number of venues on our doorstep you can give it a try this summer. Taking a dip in a lake can rejuvenate both mind and body and help reconnect us with nature. Cold water swimming boosts the immune system and improves circulation, activates endorphins for a natural high and is a great form of exercise. There’s also a great sense of community through a shared experience and challenge. Here’s a few tips to help you embrace the cold. •Summer is the best time to begin acclimatising to the water temperature. Taking cold showers beforehand can help. Start by turning the heat down in the shower until your breathing changes and count to 30. Over time, build up until you can stand two to three minutes. •Only ever swim where it is safe and you can enter and exit the water quickly and easily. It is strongly advised and often mandatory that you swim with a safety buoy / tow float and never swim on your own. •Wear a (brightly coloured) swimming hat to help preserve body heat, likewise neoprene gloves and socks. Wetsuits are mandatory for juniors and strongly advised for all when the water temperature is below 15C. •Take your time. The general rule is that you can swim for one minute per degree of water temperature, but obviously you need to listen to your body, too. Cold-water shock can be extremely dangerous. •When you get out, warm up slowly. A hot shower can cool your core so instead make sure you have plenty of warm clothes, wrap up well and have a hot drink. We are lucky to have three safe and secure open water swimming venues close by. They all run regular taster sessions and open water swimming courses as well as special events, such as night swims, with changing rooms on site and hot drinks (and cake!) Competent swimmers from age 8 can also be catered for, but do check with the venue first. In summer, the course at Swim Six Hills (LE14 3PR) expands to a 500m loop which will take you on a picturesque swim around the island. There’s a new cafe, The Flying Goose, with a clinic offering physio, biomechanics and sports massage to come. Follow on social media @swimsixhills or email [email protected] There are two swim loops at Race Hub Frisby Lakes (LE14 3TL) of approximately 350m and 700m with newly launched paddlesports. The Lake Cafe, wetsuit hire and shop on site. There’a also a scenic 30-minute walk around the lake. Follow on socials @racehub.uk visit www.racehub.uk or email [email protected] Inspire 2 Tri offers open water swimming at Whitwell, Rutland Water (LE15 8BL), on Sundays and on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from May to September. There are 200-250m and 500m marked courses within the more sheltered creek and a cafe, wetsuit hire and shop on site. 28 Local tax and accountancy specialist Lloyd Stubbs gives some advice on financial matters to small businesses. Q: Are there any benefits to doing my tax return early, other than being organised? A : Firstly, if you have an accountant completing your return, providing your records early will put you in their good books and, more importantly, will allow them to prepare your tax return without being rushed, thereby reducing the risk of any errors being made. It's also important to bear in mind that some accountants may charge a premium fee if you provide your records close to the tax return deadline. This is because they may need to pay overtime to their staff in order to complete the return in time. Completing the tax return early reduces any additional staffing costs for the accountant. From a cash flow perspective, completing your tax return early will allow you to budget for any tax liabilities coming due. This can be especially useful for those who need to make payments on account in July and January each year. On the other hand, if you are due a refund from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), once your tax return has been submitted any money you are due can be processed and you won’t have to wait until 31st January. Therefore, if you think you are due a refund, it is better to know sooner rather than later and have the money back in your bank account. Finally, completing your return early will ensure you are not in a position where a penalty for late submission or interest on underpaid tax could become an issue. Lloyd Stubbs specialises in managing tax and accountancy affairs for small business owners and can be contacted by phone or email with the details in their advert. What are the signs A struggling business will have put a number of cost-saving measures in place well in advance of enacting any staff cuts. Hiring freezes (including not replacing leavers), no annual pay rises, no upgrades to technology, or equipment and calls coming in from creditors chasing overdue invoices are indications that all is not well. It could just be a temporary cash-flow issue, but you should ensure your CV is up-to-date before any bad news hits, not after. Redundancy If voluntary redundancies won’t sufficiently reduce the workforce, a company will announce a programme of compulsory redundancies. You may be eligible for notice, redundancy pay, the option to move into a different job and time off to go to interviews. Your employer may well offer you better leaving terms than their statutory obligations, but otherwise you will need to have worked for your employer for a continuous period of two years, with the amount due being based on your weekly pay, age, and the length of time that you’ve worked at the same place. Administration Many companies go into administration rather than liquidation, which means that it’s not necessarily the end for the business. Companies can be restructured and sold on as a going concern, with staff being transferred over to a new employer under strict protective regulations. Liquidation In the case of company liquidation where the business stops trading, all employees are made redundant and those eligible for statutory redundancy pay will claim their entitlement through the National Insurance Fund. Note that regardless of what your contract said, you will only be entitled to statutory payments. What next? Whilst it’s natural to want a bit of time to assimilate the news of possible changes to your working life, you should get your CV out to recruitment consultants or other companies in your industry sector as soon as you can. Business closing? Preparing for the worst.

34 It’s the time of year when with (hopefully) better weather, more people enjoy getting out and about for a walk in the countryside, often with dogs. I’ve written before and will continue to mention sheep worrying. ANY dog has the capacity to worry sheep, this doesn’t just cover attacking and wounding them, but the frequently heard ‘oh, he’s only playing’ can cause massive disruption and stress to ewes and lambs and energy spent in mothering-up after all the disturbance (as well as abortions when ewes are pregnant). Please keep your dog on a lead in fields with sheep and stick to the public rights of way. Even if you can’t see sheep when you enter the field, look for the tell-tale signs of wool and droppings. Dogs can also cause injury and distress to cattle, as well as their presence being a major trigger for attacks by cows on not only the dog but people associated with it. Again, keep the dog on a short lead, but in the case of cattle, be prepared to release the dog if the cows become threatening and you feel you are in danger of attack. Freeing the dog will distract the cattle and the dog is much more capable of evading attack than a human is. If the cows are grazing on the line of the path, then go wide if you feel more comfortable, and keep calm and quiet so as to unsettle them as little as possible. Cows with calves at foot are the most dangerous, but any cattle have the instinct to become aggressive if they feel threatened A Cumbria beef farmer recently posted film from his calving sheds on social media to show how quickly a cow can turn. His wife, who is an experienced vet, was moving a calving cow so she could be assisted in their calving pens. The cow, normally a quiet individual who had already had multiple offspring, had given birth to one dead calf and was having difficulties with the second of twins. She was being restrained so that she could helped for her own welfare as well as that of the calf (which was eventually delivered as a healthy calf). But in a split second, before being yoked, the cow changed from cooperating, to attacking the vet and pinning her against a concrete wall, then butting her as she lay on the floor. Fortunately help was quickly at hand and the woman was just badly shaken and bruised. The video was posted as a reminder to everyone who deals with cows to never be complacent. It was pleasing to see that at least one emergency service asked for permission to use it for training purposes as their staff sometimes come into contact with cattle. Sadly, the farmer was the subject of a lot of trolling from the animal rights lobby, most of whom displayed their complete lack of understanding of the situation. He and his family also received death threats which shows how unpleasant some of these individuals are. . In the same week a Welsh hill farmer also received death threats as a result of posting a video of the traditional technique of adopting a lamb onto a ewe that has lost its own. (Skin the dead lamb and make a ‘jacket’ which is popped over the adoptee; the ewe recognises the smell of her dead lamb and hopefully accepts the new one). Shows such as Clarkson’s Farm demonstrate that the public has an appetite for real, unsanitised information about farming, the things that go wrong as well as the things that go right. Myself and many other farmers continue to try and use their own experiences, good and bad, to inform and entertain and long may it remain so, despite intimidation and abuse from behind the anonymity of the keyboard. 38 The average garden has changed significantly over the last 50 years. In a physical sense, it has become smaller but, in more general terms, expectations have grown. In a small garden every square metre matters. Today’s contemporary garden might have an outside kitchen and possibly a retractable roof to serve as sunshade or umbrella and a moving water feature provides a soundscape to accompany the outdoor dining experience. Alongside the shrinking space, our need for privacy has expanded. The addition of pleached trees – often called a ‘hedge on stilts’ – has become commonplace. They allow taller boundaries that blur the fence line, thus bringing seclusion without harsh enclosure. The latest hard landscaping features, such as decorative screens and bold colours now use interesting materials such as glass-reinforced plastic pots, corten steel and the latest paving materials. What’s not to love? Look at the plants Gardens follow fashion and plant selection tells you a huge amount about the history and evolution of a garden. Before the 1980s, a garden border would be filled with perennial planting that might include asters, campanula, delphiniums, hardy geraniums, helianthus, geums, lupins, peonies, pulmonaria, salvias and veronica. These provided spring and summer colour, but would die down for winter. Newer or updated borders might incorporate a number of shrubs to give year-round shape. There could be some structural forms in terms of sculpture or topiary. There might be evergreen giant cones and maybe some roses, rather than an entire bed dedicated to perennials. 39 The palette of plants available to us has extended dramatically over the decades. Ornamental grasses and ‘new perennial’ planting, including naturalistic swathes of perennials in subdued colours, are now likely to replace some of the more traditional herbaceous plants. This style of planting has ecology at its heart and the layers of plants tend to be interwoven to form patterns that might be found in the natural world. A contemporary border will place even more emphasis on forms, shapes and colour that last for longer. Some borders now feature a restricted palette of plant varieties, perhaps chosen for the foliage colour or shape. For example, an entire bed filled with ‘strappy’ shaped leaves in plain green, a shady bed filled with just one variety of fern, or foliage that contrasts such as burgundy and yellow. The gardener will be ruthless when interlopers try to seed themselves amongst such a carefully designed setting. Making a comeback Island beds filled with small conifers and perhaps a few rocks were a feature of the 1970s. Over the years we have tended to shun the idea of including these within a planting scheme, perhaps because some of the dwarf conifers grow larger than anticipated. They are beginning to make a comeback, however as we learn to embrace their charm. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show tends to set the trend and over the last few years these old favourite plants have been featured and applauded, along with hydrangeas, rhododendrons, dahlias and chrysanthemums. LE13 1PG Pets : Pricey pet food Drop the brand When times are tight, you are likely to have to persist with own-brand versions. Any food labelled as ‘complete’ gives a nutritionally balanced diet for the species it is made for. ‘Complementary’ food will only provide part of the nutrients your pet needs to be healthy. One option could be to mix a cheaper food with the usual product you buy, to ease the transition. Kibble vs fresh Bags of dry food are typically more expensive at the point of purchase, because you are buying in bulk, but the overall cost will be lower so it’s worth investigating. Subscription services These are great for no waste and it’s worth noting they’ll often have sign-up offers. That way you can see if your pet likes what’s delivered to you and save on the cost for a few weeks too. Food banks Nobody wants to do it, but if times really are tight, needs must. Both the RSPCA and Blue Cross have details of their food banks on their websites.
