51 Machu Picchu, Peru Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca citadel dating back to the fifteenth century. The mysterious maze of buildings, plazas and platforms was only discovered 100 years ago and it’s still not understood what its original purpose was. Taj Mahal, India The Taj Mahal is India’s most iconic symbol. Shah Jahan, king of the Mughal empire from 1628 – 1658, built the mausoleum as a monument to his beloved wife, who died in childbirth. A marble tomb in the centre is surrounded by forty-two acres of grounds, where gardens, a mosque, guest house and pool complete the complex. The Great Wall of China, China The world’s largest and most impressive man-made structure, the Great Wall was built to protect China from invasion and to guard its Silk Road trade. Taking a staggering 2,000 years to finish, the structure snakes its way along mountain ridges, valleys and hills for over 13,000 miles. Petra, Jordan Half-carved into vibrant red, white, pink and sandstone cliff faces, the prehistoric city of Petra in Jordan was ‘lost’ to the Western world for hundreds of years. Once a thriving trading centre and the ancient capital of the Nabataean empire, the city sat empty and in near ruin for centuries before being rediscovered by a European traveller in the 1800s. The Colosseum in Rome, Italy Built in the first century, the amphitheatre was once capable of holding 50,000 spectators, who watched a variety of events – including gladiator fights. According to some estimates, about 500,000 people died in the Colosseum, and so many animals that some species became extinct! Christ the Redeemer statue, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The iconic emblem of Brazil, Christ the Redeemer rises over thirty metres on the top of Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. Made from reinforced concrete and clad in over six million soapstone tiles, this totemic statue of Jesus is actually the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world. Chichen Itza, Mexico Deep in the Mexican state of Yucatán lies Chichen Itza, a historic Mayan city built between the ninth and twelfth centuries. Constructed by the pre-Columbian Mayan tribe Itzá, the city includes a series of monuments and temples. The structure features 365 steps, one for every day in the solar year. 54 The history of the Audi TT Some cars offer an incredibly recognisable shape and silhouette, and one of those is the Audi TT. Soon the TT will be no more, as Audi focuses more on electrification. We take a look back at the TT’s history. 1995 – The concept begins Audi presented a concept version of its sports car at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show. The TT, with its cool shape and fun drive, filled a gap in the German firm’s line-up as a more affordable sporting model. The name comes from the famous Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) bike racing. 1998 – Concept becomes reality When Audi presented the production TT three years later, it shared sharp similarities with the original concept car, with its distinctive shape and design details remaining intact. The Coupe model arrived in 1998 and the drop-top Roadster version a year later. A full Audi recall remedied stability issues with a rear spoiler and electronic stability program. The cars that escaped the recall are now the most valuable. 2003 – V6 engine joins the range In 2003 the TT gained more character in the form of a 3.2-litre petrol V6 engine, taking the power up to 247bhp. This engine came with quattro as standard. 2005 – Quattro Sport marks the end of the Mk1 Marking the end of the first-generation TT was the Quattro Sport special edition. Limited to 800 units in the UK, its 1.8-litre petrol engine increased power to 237bhp, and the removal of the back seats to save weight. Special Recaro Pole Position sports seats were available as an optional extra when new, with these examples now being particularly desirable. 2006 – The second hit: The secondgeneration Audi TT arrived in 2006. Adopting a slightly more angular design, this TT was also sportier to drive and bigger, being 14cm longer and 8cm wider. A new 2.0-litre petrol engine – shared with the Volkswagen Golf GTI at the time – was introduced, while an adaptive ‘Magnetic’ suspension was an option. The TT Roadster arrived in 2007 while a diesel-powered model was also introduced, helping this sports car to return more than 50mpg. 2008 – Sportier TTS and RS models This second-generation TT became much sportier with the introduction of new TTS and TT RS models. The TTS adopted a 268bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine, while the RS used a characterful 2.5-litre developing 335bhp, allowing for a 0-60mph time of just 4.4 seconds and a top speed of up to 174mph. 2014 – A high-tech TT makeover The third-generation TT arrived in 2014 as one of the brand’s most advanced models at the time. With a minimalist dashboard featuring no touchscreen as such, but rather a large 12.3- inch digital instrument cluster, it really helped to modernise the TT. It launched with a choice of 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, with the TTS taking the power up to 306bhp. 2018 – Marking twenty years in style Audi celebrated twenty years of the TT with a facelift version that brought a subtle redesign, more power and additional equipment. It also saw the introduction of the TT 20 Years special edition. Limited to just 999 units worldwide, they featured fine Nappa leather with ‘baseball’ stitching – a hark back to an option available on the original TT. 2023 – End of the road Audi is now closing the curtains on the model for good with a Final Edition. Introduced for 2023, it features bolstered equipment levels and unique elements, including an Alcantara steering wheel with red stitching and black styling elements. The highly limited TTT RS Iconic Edition, of which just eleven examples will come to the UK, features an Audi Exclusive interior and sportier body kit. 2023 1995

56 The Grantham Canal Society are delighted that Mikron Theatre Company will be performing at The Plough Inn, Hickling, next to Hickling basin on the Grantham Canal. ‘Twitchers’ is all about birds, birding and the RSPB. The show is at 7pm on 6th June. No advance tickets are required, as a ‘pay what you feel collection’ will be taken after the show. People should bring their own chairs and blankets. Mikron have been performing for 51 years at canal related venues throughout the country, travelling on their historic narrowboat Tyseley. Both Mikron and The Grantham Canal Society are registered charities and rely on volunteers. Springwatch is coming to RSPB Shrikewing nature reserve. As we meet raucous rooks, booming bitterns and plenty of tits, we realise the birds of Shrikewing are its real stars. Can Jess take inspiration from the RSPB’s tenacious female founders and draw on its history of campaigning to save them? Can she find her own voice to raise a rallying cry for nature? “It’s quite apt that Mikron’s play this year is about birds, as the restored canal will provide a haven for birds and all those that enjoy being near them” said Mary Noble, who bakes cakes for the Society’s hard working volunteers, to sustain them as they toil in all weathers to restore and maintain the canal. During the nesting season, the volunteers have to be careful not to disturb any nests along the canal, but there are always plenty of jobs to be done in other areas. Recently the Society has been repairing culverts and clearing feeders to improve water levels in the canal, and the results are starting to show, even as far down the canal as Gamston and Lady Bay. “The canal is such a wonderful amenity, open to everyone (as well as the birds) and once restored can provide entertainment for canoeists, paddle boarders, anglers, cyclists, joggers, walkers and boaters as well as people who just like to be near wildlife.” Says Mary. “Once it is fully restored all of the way from Nottingham to Grantham town centre it will be a major boost to the economy and businesses along its route, and this performance by Mikron is just one example of the way a canal be a catalyst for bringing benefits to local communities.” To find out more about the Grantham Canal Society, book a ride on their trip boat which operates during the summer months from Woolsthorpe, or become a volunteer and sample Mary’s cakes, visit the Society’s website at www.granthamcanal.org or send an email to [email protected] Something to watch out for at Hickling this June
