COLLENBERGER PACES THE PACK Bob Collenberger, Glen Curtis and Jack Sims take the lead in the Ball State cross country meet. Underclassmen show prom1se as harriers Four wins and two losses is rapidly becoming a habit for Eastern cross-country teams. This has been the record for the last three ye ars. This year the team added second and fifth in the conference and state. Harriers for 1950 were Jim Acklin , Glen Curtis, Herb Wills, Jack Farris, Wilbur Gibson, Bob Collenberger, Jack Sims, and Byron York-all underclassmen . The first five ran in every meet. Collenberger ran in three meets, Sims and York in one each. Sims, Collenberger, Acklin and Curtis gave Eastern the nucleus for one of the best teams in the state. Then, a series of bad breaks set the team back. After winning the first meet, Sims developed shin-splints and a bad arch which prevented him from running in another meet. Collenberger, after running in the first three races, quit school, liquidating two of the top four men. Highlights of the season were beating Normal on its own course; winning the first two home meets of the season; increasing the home winning streak to nine ; nnd taking second in the I lAC. Eight teams compete in touch football Under the direction of Dr. Harland Riebe , Easte;n men enjoyed a highly successful intramura! program during the fall quarter. More than ISO men participated in two touch football leagues made up of fraternity and independent teams. The battle for championship honors developed into a two-way fight between Sigma Tau Gamma and the Barracks Boys. Both teams dominated their respective leagues. The Sig Taus won seven games during the season including a 21-6 triumph over the Barracks. In the first round of the play-off, Kappa Sigma Kappa fell to the Sig Tau juggernaut 33-7, whil e the Barracks topped Carlini club 6-0. In the final game of the 1950 1ntramurals, Sig Tau won a 20-6 game from the Barrac ks. [ 168] Sig Tau led both leagues in offense by averaging 43 points a game and on defense by holding opponents to less than five points per game. Howard Siegel led the blue and white a nd the individual scori ng race with 162 points. The redheaded flash raced to 27 touchdowns in seven games, not competing in the play-offs. Don Siegel of the Barracks was a distant second with 92 points on I 5 touchdowns and two extra points. Jack Howell, Kappa Sig speedster, finished third with thirteen touchdowns and no extra points for 78 markers. J im Johnson of the Barracks and Morris jacobs of Kappa Sig were fourth and fifth with 74 and 72 points, respectively. Instead of the usual touch to down a ball carrier, a 12 -in ch length of rope had to be pulled from the back of the runner's belt.

Panthers called 'greatest' once more Each year the Eastern basketball team is called the greatest in the history of the school. They have been improving every year since Coach William A. Healey took over the reins and at the current rate they should go undefeated in the 1954 season. The 1950-51 season ended with the Panthers winning 19 games and losing only four. For the first time in the history of the school the basketball team won an undisputed !lAC championship· Scoring records fell like leaves in the autumn breeze when the Panthers took the court. Three different times they surpassed the century mark in scoring. The first time Southern suffered, I 07-78, number two was over Quincy I IS54, and the third time over Central Michigan I 05-48. The I 15 points against Quincy was a new school record for the home court. The 1938 edition of the Panthers rolled up I 06 points in the "cracker-box" at Pem hall. A new away-from-home record also fell into the clutches of Eastern. This was a 90-65 walloping of Millikin university at Decatur. A well-balanced attack was displayed by Eastern in a majority of the games. It was exemplified mainly in the Quincy game when the five Eastern starters of Don Glover, John Wilson, Tom Katsimpalis, Jim Johnson, and Bud Patberg scored 23, 22, 20, 19, and 18 points. Four of the starters averaged over 14 points a game for the 23 game schedule. Glover and WilFrom top - Substitutes Dettro, Doane, Lee , Roe , Soergel. [ 174] son averaged above the 16 point mark. Bud Patberg led the nation in free throw percentages, hitting well ove; 80 per cent of his free tosses. As a team the Panthers were second in the nation in team scoring. Beloit bested them by less than one point, averaging 85 points a game. Eastern averaged 84.1 points per game. The Panthers also led the nation in victory margins over opponents, winning every game by an average of better than 25 points. Millikin edged Eastern in team free throw percentages by less than one point. Another first for the team-and the school-was the Central States basketball tournament sponsored by the Eastern athletic department. Eastern , Anderson college, Cape Girardeau, and Milwaukee Teachers participated in the Christmas holiday tourney. Don Glover, Tom Katsimpalis, and Jim Johnson were named to all-conference berths. John Wilson was second team all-conference. Millikin upset the favored Panthers in the NAIB district 20 playoffs for the right to represent Illinois in the Kansas City tournament. Eastern stunned Illinois Wesleyan in the opening game 95-62 but then dropP-ed the final to the Blue 74-73. At the end of the season Eastern boasted a 3 !-game home floor winning streak. They have not bowed since Indiana State pulled the trick in the 1948 season. The closest any team came was Concordia of St. Louis, who dropped a two-point decision to Eastern last year on the local court. Tom Katsimpalis was voted the " most valuable player" on the team by his mates and finished second in balloting to Ed Ware of Northern for conference "most valuable." Coach Rex Darling's B team went through the season with only rwo defeats in eight games.

Phi Sigs wm IM basketball title After a hotly contested play-off Phi-Sigma Epsilon (Gold league) topped the Party Boys for the intramural basketball title. The top two teams in each of the four leagues entered the play-offs. Four teams finished the regular season undefeated. They were Sig Tau (Gold league), W ilson's Minute Men (Blue league), Ph i Sig (Red league), and Party Boys (White league). All had seven wins and no losses. Thirty-two teams participated in league play. Games were played on week day evenings with officials obtained from the basketball officiating classes. Rallying from a loss at the hands of Sig Ta u the Phi Sigs swept through the play-offs almost [ 176 J unhindered, trouncing the Gremlins 65-46 in a semifinal game. In the final against the Party Boys they came out with a 68-49 victory. Sig Tau dropped their only game of the season in semi-final play 34- 33 to the Party Boys. Jim Fredenberger of the Gremlins won the individual scoring title by amassing I 08 points to nose out John Simmons of Phi Sig and Jeffries of Epsilon Iota Sigma; both notched I 07 apiece. Highest single game score made by a team was I 07 points by Sigma Pi over Gamma Delta with 34. Vern Wagner, John Simmons, Bill Dawson, Gene Gresham, Jerry Cavanaugh , Bill Reineke, Bud Gray, Bi ll Danley, and Pete Herren were members of the champions.

FA NS VI EW BASEBALL GA~~E Eastern nine Wins ~ive, loses eight The Eastern diamond crew, under the coaching of Charles P. Lantz in his thirty-ninth year as baseball tutor, relinquished the IIAC title it had captured in 1949 to Northern Illinois. The Panther nine won seven games and lost eight in season play, and won three while losing five in conference competition. In addition to facing each IIAC team twice, the Panthers met Va lparaiso, Chanute Field, Millikin. Indiana State (twice), St. Joseph 's (Ind.), and the alumni. Don Brumleve, with a 3-2 won-lost record, was the only pitcher with a better than .500 win percentage. Jules DeBouck (2-2). Ray DeMoulin (1-1), and Lyle Button ( 1-1 ) picked up the other Ea stern victories. On the hitting side of the ledger, Jack Wh itson -1 949 II AC "most valuable"-ruled supreme with his .400 batting average. Aaron Gra y, hitting .3 70: J. D. Anderson, with a .339 average: and Vi rgil Sweet hitting .30 I were the only other players to show much power or consistency at the plate. W hitson, Anderson, and DeBouck received fi rst team all-conference positions, and Sweet was g iven a second team berth. DeBouck's award wa s based mainly on two excellent mound performances in conference play. Anderson was elected team "most valuable" on the strength of his all-around good play. J. D. led the league in bases stolen with 12, and finished near the top in runs scored. [ 180]

And the fact that the racket team did not place in the conference meet at Normal certainly did not discredit them as Normal swept all but one singles match. Only three boys with college experience-Bob Stuckey, Gaydon Brandt, and Steve Morgan-returned from the 1949 team to form a nucleus for the 1950 squad.
