Reading
Some people have
physical problems. They
cannot walk because
they don't have right or
left leg. Or they cannot
see because they are
blind. Or they cannot
hear. Such people are
called disabled. Disability
happens if some parts
of body do not work
properly. Or when some
parts of their body are
injured. People with disability cannot do all the things. For example, a
blind person cannot see. But the person can think and walk. A blind
person can also read. Such persons need other's help. Likewise, some
people cannot walk. But they can read, write, think, etc. So, such people
are not disable. Actually, they are able to do things differently.
Here is a short story
In a small village of Dolakha, there lived four boys. Roshan, Raman,
Ratan and Rupesh. They studied in grade III. But each of them had a
problem. Roshan was blind. But he could sing beautifully. He could
identify people by feeling and hearing them speak. Raman could see
but his hands didn't work. Yet he could read and write. He turned
pages with the toes. And he could also write with them. Ratan could
not hear. He could not speak either. But he was very clever. He talked
by using signs. He could draw very good pictures. Rupesh helped
Roshan, Raman and Ratan. Rupesh felt that he didn't know enough.
But his handwriting was beautiful.
52 Oasis Social Studies & Creative Arts-3
One day, different competitions were organized in school. Roshan,
Raman, Ratan and Rupesh also took part. In singing competition,
Roshan stood first. Raman won the race. In painting competition,
Ratan won the first prize. And in handwriting, Rupesh was the best.
Then they realized that they were better than others.
Many people live in a society. They are not the same. Some are rich
while others are poor. Some people don't have any problem with their
bodies. But some people cannot walk, some cannot see with either eye.
Some are injured in accidents. Some people are born with disability.
But every person is able to do something well. Every person has some
special talent and quality. Every person is able. So we should not look
down upon "disabled" people. They are not disabled. They are able to do
things differently.

Lesson Helping the
Helpless
3.2
Pre-reading Activities
Imagine you are walking on
the way. You have got some
lunch money with you. If a
beggar asks you for money,
what will you do? Is it a
good idea to give money to
a beggar? Think of these
questions and share your
ideas with the class.
Reading
In the previous lesson, we learned about
Roshan, Raman, Ratan and Rupesh.
They are boys with disabilities. Disabled
people need our help. And we must help
them in whatever ways we can.
If you see a blind person trying to cross
the road, you should hold the person's
hand and take the person across the
road. Similarly, if you see a person on a
wheelchair, you can push the chair for
56 Oasis Social Studies & Creative Arts-3
him or her. It is not that only disabled
people need our help. Some people may
fall sick. We should help them, too.
A person becomes helpless because of
being disabled, or losing parents, or being
very poor. A sick person is also a helpless
person. When somebody is sick in our
family, we should help the sick by giving
medicine and food. If we meet an orphan we should help the child by
giving food and shelter.
Being helpless is a very bad experience. Nobody wants to be helpless.
But something very bad happens and people lose many things. Some
lose their parents. Some have their houses and property washed away
by floods. Some have nobody to take care, some are too old to take care
of themselves. We should be kind to such people. We should show our
love to them.

The Kathmandu Post Why?
What can we do to stop such
incidents?
Reading
There are some false things in which 59
we believe. Sometimes, we believe in
them without finding out if they are
true or not. For example, some believe
that a woman can be a witch. She can
kill or make people very ill by means
of her spells. Some also believe that it
is a bad sign if we see a person carrying
an empty pitcher when we are about
Oasis Social Studies & Creative Arts-3
to begin a journey. All these are examples of false beliefs. Sometimes
we tend to believe in false ideas. Believing in false practice is called
superstition. Superstition is a wrong belief that cannot be explained by
science. It is a belief that certain events bring good or bad luck.
Superstition is a bad idea. It causes the society to practise bad customs.
So we should not believe in superstition.
Still, in many communities in Nepal,
people follow bad customs. Let us talk
about some of them.
Untouchability: Untouchability is a
practice of not allowing the so called
low-caste persons to enter the house of
so called high caste people. Low-caste
people are often treated very badly by high caste people. It is a very bad
practice. We should not support this. Though we have different castes,
we are all human beings.
Child marriage: In some places of Nepal, children are married when they
are very young. They can be seven or eight years of age like you. When
they are married, they do not
know the meaning of marriage.
Surely, this is a very bad practice.
It must come to an end.
Dowry system : In many places,
people follow dowry system.
Dowry is property like land, TV
set, motorbike and money which
a bride brings to her husband’s
house at marriage. Only rich people can give dowry to their daughters.
Poor people cannot. Some families treat their daughters-in-law very
badly if they do not bring dowry. Some women are even killed. It is
another very bad practice. We should end it.
We should all work together to eliminate superstitions and bad customs.
They make the society a bad place for many people.

knew Lincoln was an American president. But he didn't know much. So
he decided to ask Alex. "Would you mind telling me something about
Abraham Lincoln?" Gaurav asked.
"Not at all," the tourist said and began to tell him about Lincoln.

4.2 Natural Resources
Pre-reading Activities
Take a few minutes. Think of the following questions. Then, share
your views with the class.
• Where does the water you drink come from? What is its source?
• Where does the furniture you use come from? What is its source?
• Where does the paper you use come from? What is it made of?
• What will happen if all these sources dry up?
Reading
There are many man-made
things in the world. TV
set, computer, aeroplane,
refrigerator, etc. are the man-
made things. Other things are
not made by man. Is the sky
man-made? No. Is water made
by man? No. Is soil made by
man? Similarly, are trees made
by men? No. Things like forest,
water, land, etc. are always
there but they are not made
by man. We call such things
natural resources. Natural resources are things like soil, forest, water,
land, mineral, etc. Natural resources exist in nature by themselves.
Oasis Social Studies & Creative Arts-3 69
Every natural resource is
important for us.
Water is an important
natural resource. We
cannot live without water.
Animals, birds and plants
need water. We use water
for many purposes. We
use water to cook food,
wash clothes and irrigate
farmlands. Water is used
to produce electricity.
Where do we get water from? Rain, river, well, lake, pond, etc. are the
sources of water. We
should protect these
sources. We should
keep the wells, ponds,
rivers, lakes clean.
We should not throw
rubbish in these
places.
Land is as important as
water. Human beings,
animals, insects, etc.
live on land. Plants,
trees grow on land. We make houses, schools, offices on land. We grow
crops like maize, rice, wheat on land. Without land where would we
live? We should keep land safe. Floods and landslides fragment land.
We should not use chemicals on land. Chemicals make land less fertile.
You may be thinking what is forest good for. It is the shelter for wild
animals. It is wrong to think like that. Forests are also important. Actually
a forest is a big land which is covered with trees and bushes. Just as land is
our home, forest is home for trees, wild animals, birds, insects, etc. Forest
gives us wood and timber from which we make houses and furniture.
70 Oasis Social Studies & Creative Arts-3
Different kinds of
medicinal herbs come
from forest. Very
beautiful flowers like
rhododendron are
also found in forest.
Elephants, deer, bears,
tigers, lions, etc. live in
the forest. Some people
are careless. They cut
down trees. But we
should save forests.
Forests can bring rain. Forests can also stop floods, landslides, and soil
erosion.
Forest, water and land are natural resources which we can see. Some
natural resources are found under ground. We may not see them. They
are minerals. Minerals are substances like iron, copper, gold, salt, oil,
limestone, etc. They are found on or under the earth. Jewellery, pots
and other tools are made from minerals. Minerals are important to run
industries and factories.
Our life will be very hard without natural resources. We should protect
all the natural resources. We should not waste them.

On her way home, she saw
a poster on a street wall. The
poster was about a Nepali
movie: Bhanubhakta. The
poster also said this movie was
important for students. Pooja

5.3 My Municipality
Pre-reading Activities
Do you live in a town or have you ever visited a town? Make a list
of information about a town that you live in or have recently visited.
Include name, location, names of rivers, lakes, mountains, famous
sites, and what you like the best about the town. Then, read out to the
class.
Reading
I live in Damak Municipality
of Jhapa district. It is one of
the trade centers of my district.
People of different castes,
ethnicity and culture live here.
Basically, Brahmins, Chhetris,
Limbus, Rais, and Dhimals
live in my town. They live
in harmony and cooperate
with each other in need. It is
surrounded by Ratuwa Khola
in the east and Mawa Khola
in the west. The East-West
highway divides it in about
two equal halves. There is a
large Tea Estate in the western
part of my municipality. There
Oasis Social Studies & Creative Arts-3 97
is a forest in the north. There is Krishna Mandir on its western side.
Similarly, Sivalaya Mandir is located in the middle of Damak city. We
can find Damak in the map. To find a place in the map, we must know
the directions.
How to find direction?
It is easy to find directions in the map. Look N
at the map of Damak once again. Try to find
the direction. At the top of the given map N E
is written with an arrow sign, which indicates W
the north direction. Generally, the upper part
of the map indicates the north direction, right
hand side shows the east, left hand side shows S
the west and the bottom is the south. In our
country, it is very easy to find north in the real field because there is the
great Himalayan range in the north of Nepal. If we face the Himalayas,
our right hand side will be the east. Our left hand will be the west. And
our back side will be towards the south.
