Acknowledgement We are living in the 21st century. This is the age of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). ICT has become an integral part of our daily life. It facilities the business professionals, academicians, students, banking and other sectors. It has become a fundamental right of children to get computer education. They have to get the basic to advance knowledge of computer to cope the changes in future. The Government of Nepal has prescribed the syllabus and course outline for the computer education from primary to higher secondary level. Students are not able to get quality computer education due to the lack of quality text books and the limited access to the computer system in schools. To address this scenario, I have developed the complete series of computer book with name Oasis Radiant Computer Science from grade I to grade XII. I have devoted more time for the research and development for the preparation of this book. It provides a comprehensive and balanced coverage at the CDC syllabus. It is possible due to the comprehensive support of my colleges, family members, students and the teachers. I would like to acknowledge all who have directly or indirectly encouraged me to prepare this book. Specially, my thanks go to the students and teachers of different schools for their regular interactions and inspirations to prepare this book. In the same way my thanks go to my parents Tek Nath and Chisa Maya Adhikary, family members Lachhima Adhikary, Jagan Adhikary, Sarashwati Adhikary and lovely kids Samridhi, Sampada, Prasamsha, Ballavi, Ragavi, Suyash and Suyasha Adhikary for their valuable contribution to prepare this book. I must give thanks to OASIS PUBLICATION family for their innovative help to prepare and publish this book. Finally, all the suggestions and comments are acknowledged. Thanking all. Er. Introduction to Computer 1 Chapter Describe Output devices What is a computer? Explain about the Input devices. What is CPU?

6 Oasis Radiant computer science Grade Two 1 Introduction to Computer UNIT Computer is an electronic device. It accepts data and instructions from the user by using input devices. It stores them and processes according to the instructions given by the user. Finally it gives the results to the user by using output devices. There are three sections of computer system. They are input section, processing section and output section. A typical computer system is shown in the figure below: Some components of the computer system are given in above figure. They are CPU, monitor, mouse, keyboard, printer and speakers. CPU(Central Processing Unit) It is the main part of the computer system. It is also known as the brain of the computer. It has three sections: Memory Unit, ALU (Arithmetic Logical Unit) and Control Unit. It is inside the CPU box which is called Monitor CD-ROM drive Printer Keyboard Speaker Mouse Floppy drive CPU box

Oasis Radiant computer science Grade Two 7 casing. Casing box has different buttons and drives like Floppy Drive, Digital Versatile Disk (DVD) drive and CD-ROM (Compact Disk Read Only Memory) drive as given in the figure. Monitor Monitor is popular visual output device. It displays the result on its screen. It is a TV like device. There are three types of monitors. They are CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and LED (Light Emission Diode) monitor. Mouse Mouse is a pointing type input device that helps to give input to the computer. It has three buttons: left , right and scroll button. There are mechanical and optical mouse. Keyboard Keyboard is a popular input device that helps to give text and numeric data to the computer system. It has different types of keys like alphabet keys, number keys, arrow keys and some special keys.

Evolution of Computer 2 Chapter What are modern computers? Describe the history of computer What are mechanical computers? Who is the father of computer?

12 Oasis Radiant computer science Grade Two Evolution of Computer UNIT Development of computer started with the use of number system. Number system was developed by Hindu philosophers. They started the numbers 0 to 9 for counting. Other numbers are derived from these numbers. Development of computer has crossed three types of technologies. They are: • Mechanical computers, • Electromechanical computers, and • Modern electronic computers. 2

Oasis Radiant computer science Grade Two 13 Mechanical Computers Abacus It is the first calculating device. It works manually. It was developed by the Chinese 2,500 years ago. It has three parts. Upper part is heaven. Lower part is earth. Upper and lower parts are separated by mid bar. Napier’s Bone It is a manual device. English mathematician John Napier built this device for the purpose of multiplication in 1617 A D. So, it is known as Napier’s bone. Slide Rule English mathematician William Oughtred developed the slide rule in 1620. It consists of the fixed scale and one movable scale over the fixed scale. Heaven Mid bar Earth

14 Oasis Radiant computer science Grade Two Pascaline Blaise Pascal had developed a machine at the age of 19 in 1642. It could add and subtract the numbers. It is popular with the name of Pascaline. Analytical Engine Charles Babbage invented the first computer in 1823 AD. It was called a different engine. He is known as the father of computer.

Oasis Radiant computer science Grade Two 15 Modern Electronic Computer IBM (International Business Machine) company developed the first electronic computer.
