Different types of computers have been developed in different periods of time which are different in size, technology, speed and storage. The division of computer into different time periods on the basis of their electronic components is called computer generation. There are five generations of computer. First Generation First generation of computers appeared in 1946-1958. It was the era of vacuum tubes. The computers of this era were huge, very expensive, slow and had limited application capabilities. First computer that used vacuum tubes was constructed by J. P. Eckert and J. Mauchly in 1946. That machine was called ENIAC (Electronc Numerical Integrator and Computer). ENIAC had thousands of vacuum tubes. Second Generation Second generation of computers were developed in 1959-1964 by using transistors. It was a very short era. The vacuum tubes were replaced by transistors.
Oasis Radiant computer science Grade Three 29 Use of transistor made the computer smaller, faster and cheaper. Those computers were more efficient and reliable than the first generation computers. Moreover those computers could store more data. One transistor could work like 1000 vacuum tubes. IBM 1401, IBM 7030 computers are the examples of second generation computer. Third Generation Third generation computers were developed in 1965 to 1974 AD. They used IC (Integrated Circuit) as main electronic component. Those computers were much more powerful and smaller than previous generations. IBM 360, IBM 370 computers are the examples of this generation. Fourth Generation Fourth generation computers were developed since 1975 till date. It has used LSI and VLSI Microprocessor (LSI-Large Scale of Integration and VLSI- Very Large Scale of Integration). These computers are very small and popular till date. These are also called Microcomputer or Personal Computer (PC). They have very high storage capacity.
