Welcome from the
Western GolfAssociation

Since 1899, the Western Golf Association has been proud
to conduct the Western Amateur, an international
championship as prestigious and challenging as any
in the game of golf.

This week, we welcome our 2023 Western Amateur
contestants and fans to North Shore Country Club,
one of the most revered clubs in the Chicago area.
Designed by the legendary duo of Harry S. Colt and
Charles H. Alison, North Shore remains a test worthy
of the best players in the game. The Western Open,

their support of this championship, North Shore’s
members have made a real difference in the lives of
young men and women nationwide. We are so grateful
for their generosity.

Over the next few days, this field of 156 players will
compete in a grueling format designed to identify the
very best. Chick Evans, Francis Ouimet, Jack Nicklaus,
Justin Leonard and Tiger Woods all toppled fields of
their peers to have their names etched on the George R.
Thorne Trophy.

2023 Western Amateur Championship Welcome 7

Welcome to North Shore CountryClub and
the 121stWesternAmateurChampionship

On behalf of the Board of Governors and the entire membership of
North Shore Country Club, I am thrilled to welcome you to the 121st
Western Amateur. We are honored to again be hosting this prestigious
national championship which is truly the toughest test in amateur golf,
and we are all looking forward to a spectacular week featuring the most
accomplished amateur golfers in the game today.
North Shore has had a deep love affair and storied history with amateur
golf having hosted the U.S. Amateur on two occasions, been the course
where the last amateur won the U.S. Open and hosting the Western Amateur
in 2011 where the field included many of today’s PGA TOUR stars — Jordan
Spieth, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay, to name a few. In fact, many of
golf’s greatest players have etched their name on the George R. Thorne
Trophy awarded to the Western Amateur champion, including Jack Nicklaus,
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Charles “Chick” Evans, Jr., Ben Crenshaw,
Curtis Strange, Hal Sutton and Justin Leonard. Just think about that as
you watch the incredible play of this year’s talented field!
J. Scott Barnes
President, North Shore Country Club I want to thank all of those who have dedicated so much of their time,
passion and energy to make this week happen, especially our tournament
co-chairs Reb Banas and Brad Rendell, and their committee, for their
extraordinary commitment. Without them, and all of our members who
have volunteered their talents, none of this would be possible. Thank you
for your support, encouragement and generosity over the past almost
two years of planning!

And of course, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Joe Desch, John Kaczkowski
and Steve Prioletti of the Western Golf Association for their support and
guidance and the trust they have placed in North Shore to host this
important tournament. We admire the WGA and are honored to share in
their outstanding mission in supporting the Evans Scholars Foundation,
which awards full tuition and housing college scholarships to high-
achieving caddies with limited financial means. So this week is not
just about world-class golf; it’s about making a significant financial
contribution to an outstanding organization.
Thank you, and best wishes for an incredible week!

This past winter, a record 325 students
from across the country have been
awarded the Evans Scholarship, a
prestigious full housing and tuition
college grant offered to golf caddies.
Each caddie has a unique story that
reflects the scholarship’s four selection
criteria: a strong caddie record,
excellent academics, demonstrated
financial need and outstanding
character. Recipients were interviewed
at one of more than 20 selection
meetings across the country, from
November through March.
They will begin college as Evans
Scholars this fall, attending one of 24
leading universities across the nation.
There are 1,100 Evans Scholars in school.
