Yards 446 — Par 4
This long dogleg right par-4 will set the tone
for what players will face this year in the 2023
Western Amateur. Being in the fairwaywill be
essential to have a clean shot at the green as
almost any shot in the rough will require
navigating trees. During the 2017 restoration,
the green was raised with the addition of a
steep runoff long that is not a sure up and
down. The miss for this green is to leave the
ball short, as the green banks from back
to front.

The second at North Shore
plays as a par 5 for the
members but will play as the
longest par 4 this week. A tee
shot that finishes in the fairway
is a must if you wish to hold this
green that slopes from back right to
front left. It is closely guarded bywater
on the right as well as two greenside bunkers.
This will likely play as the hardest hole on the
golf course.

Yards 181 — Par 3
Many may say this is the most beautiful hole
at North Shore, but do not let it deceive you.
This tough par 3 requires a 170-yard carry
over water to a green that is surrounded by
four deep bunkers. The green slopes heavily
from back to front, leaving a treacherous
up-and-down for par for anyone long or
in the back bunker.

encourages a fade from the tee.
Missing the fairway to the right
will stymie a player looking to
advance a ball to the green.
Approach shots from the fairwaywill
have the challenge of navigating two
greenside bunkers. The green has a spine running
down the middle as well as a general slope from
back to front making this a difficult green to read.

Yards 382 — Par 4
The short par-4 fifth hole should lend itself
to plenty of birdie looks. Players will be
challenged with out-of-bounds left and willow
trees right. Tee shots from the left side of the
fairwaywill lead to the best approach into the
green. With one of the most severe greens on
the golf course that slopes from back to front,
spin control will be crucial to hit one tight.
Players missing the green will be challenged
with a short-sided shot from deep bunkers.

par 4 will catch a downslope
for extra yards and will leave a
short iron into an elevated green.
Long hitters must be aware of the
centerline bunker that sits in the
low-lying fairway. The pin location will
determine whether this is a birdie hole or a
challenging par.

The toughest par 3 on the
golf course will require an
accurate long iron. Anything
that misses the green left is a
near impossible up and down.
Putting is also a challenge as the
green slopes from back left to front
right. Any chance at birdie or par must be
approached from below the hole.

Yards 412 — Par 4
The closing hole on the front nine should set
up plenty of good looks at birdie. A generous
landing area will leave a short wedge shot in
for most players. The green is protected by
bunkers short, right, and long. Spin control
will again be needed as the green slopes from
back to front.

Choosing the correct line on
the tee shot here will be
crucial. Too far right and the
ball will be caught in the trees.
Too far left and it will run
through the fairway. Distance
control as well as accuracywill be
tested. This very long and narrow green is
framed beautifully by two large, deep bunkers
running the full length of the green.

This short par 4 should provide plenty of
excitement. The slightly downhill tee shot

fairway bunkers will leave a short iron shot

A drive in the fairwaywill be
a green light to reach this par

must be aware of the tidal wave

deep bunker will be sure to cause
players headaches when trying to
stop a flop shot on a green that runs away
from the bunker. Birdies will be plentiful here
with a sprinkling of eagles.

This short, slight dogleg right

Players can hit anything from

the most difficult to hit as it is the
smallest on the course and sloped
from back to front. Any shot that reaches
the front of the green should leave a good look
at birdie to most hole locations.

North Shore CountryClub Goes “Organic”
This article originally appeared in the February 2021 edition of Chicago District Golfer magazine.
The microbiome is a community of
trillions of bacteria, viruses and fungi
that covers your body and is essential
for your health. Your diet, aging, the
medications you take and diseases you
catch all can impact the balance of the
microbes in your body.
The concept of the microbiome has
largely been applied to the health of the

are widely marketed to improve them —
but there are microbiomes throughout
the body, from the mouth to the skin.

The Board of Governors of North Shore Country Club wishes to extend a profound thanks to the Western Amateur
Committee and the many member volunteers who have dedicated months of planning and many thousands of
hours of personal time to this year’s playing of the Western Amateur Championship at North Shore.
The success of this year’s Western Amateur would not have been possible without a close partnership with the
Western Golf Association who guided our work and the North Shore Country Club staff who are essential to
both the planning and execution of the tournament.
Thank you to our sponsors and donors whose generosity will directly benefit caddies with a desire to attend college,
gain an outstanding education and succeed in the years ahead.
North Shore Country Club is honored to host the 121st Western Amateur Championship.
