The second of five consecutive holes with
out-of-bounds on the right, long hitters
can target the left side of the fairway and
let loose. When the pin is on the right
side, second shots require accuracy,
maybe a soft fade. Former Exmoor

U.S. Open, called this “the toughest hole
on the course, with its narrow entrance
and traps on both sides.”

By tournament week, the trees on the left

HOLE 14
YARDS 174 — PAR 3
Conviction will be the operative word on
this tee. Players will need to judge both
distance and the wind to a narrow back-
to-front sloping green, then swing away.
Balls short of the green will roll to the
pond. Almost every putt will contend
with a raised spine running front-to-back.

HOLE 15
YARDS 573 — PAR 5
To be a two-shot par 5, this double dogleg
hole will require two well-struck, left-to-
right shots: the first to hold the fairway
off the tee and another to fade around
the tall trees on the right at the
second dogleg.

HOLE 16
YARDS 444 — PAR 4
Exmoor’s longest par 4 showcases the
original Donald Ross cross-bunkering
recaptured by golf architect Ron Prichard
in 2003. Drives landing on the left side of
the fairway offer the best angle to most
every pin position.

HOLE 17
YARDS 434 — PAR 4
From the elevated tee, your sightline is
uninterrupted, unless your drive collides
with a fairway bunker, left or right.
The members’ secret: grain on the green
grows to the west, making uphill putts
faster than you think and downhill
putts slower. Donald Ross called this
hole a personal favorite. The hole will
now play to 439 yards with the new
championship tee.

HOLE 18
YARDS 439 — PAR 4
This straightaway par 4 has been
Exmoor’s finishing hole since the day
golf was first played here in 1897. From
the crest of the hill, with its dramatic
clubhouse view, this is one of golf’s
most spectacular closing holes.
