4 Commemorative Program Exmoor Country Club

WELCOME TO THE

120TH WESTERN AMATEUR

Welcome to Exmoor Country Club and
the 120th Western Amateur Championship

Exmoor Country Club — its members and staff — welcome you to a week
of world-class amateur golf competition at the 120th Western Amateur
Championship.
This year marks 10 years since Exmoor last hosted the championship, won
in 2012 by Chris Williams, a senior at the University of Washington. Exmoor
first hosted the 1904 Western Amateur, won by member H. Chandler Egan,
and played host again in 1952, when Frank Stranahan was the winner.

Exmoor was a charter member of the Western Golf Association in 1899.
Over many decades, Exmoor and the WGA have shared two goals — to hold
important golf championships and, beginning with the establishment of
the Evans Scholars Foundation in 1930, to provide scholarships to send
deserving caddies to college.

In that regard, I am pleased to announce that Exmoor members and event
sponsors have exceeded the club’s goal to raise $500,000 to support this
year’s tournament and to fund two or more Endowed Named Evans
Hob Jordan Scholarships on behalf of Exmoor.
President, Exmoor Country Club
No other charitable effort in our club’s history can approach this level of
generosity. Our members can be proud that for years to come — on a
permanent basis — young, hardworking caddies will enjoy the benefits
of a college education.
We are grateful to the Western Golf Association for its confidence in
selecting Exmoor to host this event. Our special thanks go to WGA President
and CEO John Kaczkowski and his staff for their leadership, encouragement,
and support.

Exmoor’s exceptionally talented staff is ready to provide the highest level of
service to contestants and guests. We trust you will enjoy our clubhouse
and other facilities to make your experience at Exmoor a special one.
On behalf of Exmoor’s Board of Governors, the tournament committee,
and the club’s entire membership, welcome to Exmoor.

And to the contestants — play well!
Sincerely,

Hob Jordan
President, Exmoor Country Club

6 Welcome Exmoor Country Club

Welcome from the
Western Golf Association

Since 1899, the Western Golf Association has been
proud to conduct the Western Amateur, an interna-
tional championship as prestigious and challenging
as any in the game of golf.

This week, we welcome our 2022 Western Amateur
contestants to Exmoor Country Club, one of the most
storied clubs in the greater Chicago area. Since 1903,
this Donald Ross masterpiece of a venue has hosted
18 national championships.

Nancy Rotering
Mayor, Highland Park entertainment we have to offer.
Highland Park is proud to be the home of Exmoor Country Club, the oldest
running organization in our community. Since its founding in 1896, the
Exmoor Country Club has been a good citizen and partner to the City.
During the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918, Exmoor generously allowed the
use of the clubhouse as a temporary hospital. For the City’s centennial
celebration in 1969, Exmoor donated the Stupey Cabin, the oldest existing
building structure in Highland Park, and now relocated adjacent to City Hall.
Exmoor membership has been comprised of professional and civic leaders
from our community and served as a social center where neighbors gathered
to play golf and forge lifelong friendships.

Thank you for visiting our community and Exmoor Country Club for the
WGA’s 2022 Western Amateur Championship and please make yourselves
at home.

Sincerely,

Welcome!
On behalf of the City of Highwood, the City of Highland Park, and our entire
community, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to Exmoor Country Club
for the 120th Western Amateur Championship.
We are proud to be the home of Exmoor Country Club and are thrilled to
have been selected as the site of this year’s Championship. Since 1896 the

communities and served as a social center where neighbors gathered to play
golf and forge lifelong friendships.

Highwood’s placement between Lake Forest and Highland Park,
conveniently located near Chicago and adjacent to Lake Michigan, offers
visitors access to world class attractions such as the Town of Fort Sheridan
development and the Highwood Bocce Club, which hosts international

Generosity and Gratitude

Instead of an extended fundraising effort, the
campaign gained momentum toward its goal in late
2021, exceeding it by mid-January 2022, a truly amazing
and generous response from members and others.

All of us at Exmoor look forward to making new
friends among the young men who will compete on
our golf course. Remembering the Western Amateur
of 2012, the week goes quickly and concludes with the
excitement and suddenness of the semifinal and final
18-hole matches, scheduled for Saturday, August 6.

The Western Amateur Returns to
Exmoor Country Club

The 2022 Western Amateur is bringing
a decorated field of the world’s best
amateur golfers to historic Exmoor
Country Club in Highland Park
this week.
First held in 1899, the Western
Amateur features one of the deepest
and strongest fields in amateur golf, as
well as the game’s most grueling format.
It is the world’s third oldest amateur
championship, behind only the British
Amateur (1885) and the U.S. Amateur
(1895), and attracts top-ranked players
from around the world. Past Western

Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. and Exmoor

Wherever he played around the globe,
Evans was known for his Chicago roots.
He learned golf as a caddie at Chicago’s
Edgewater Club and was a member at
the Glen View Club. In his auto-
biography, the Chick Evans Golf Book
(1920), he recalls accepting membership
at Exmoor in 1909 and the thrill of
playing for the club’s victorious Marshall
Field Cup team of that same year.
