One year after The Open drove him to tears, Shane Lowry conquered the best in the world to win at Royal Portrush (Photo by The Open)One year ago at The Open, with his game a mess and his chances burnt to a crisp by the firm fairways of Carnoustie, Shane Lowry hopped in his car and allowed the mo- ment to overtake him.
It was, at the time, an understandable reaction to another blown chance on a big stage. Once a staple inside the top 50 in the Of-
ficial World Golf Rankings, once extolled for his remarkable Eu- ropean Tour win as an amateur, Lowry’s game had slipped. He was down to 92nd in the world, a precarious position from which major championship invites are no longer guaranteed.
“I sat in the car park in Carnoustie on Thursday, almost a year ago right to this week, and I cried,” Lowry said. “Golf wasn’t my friend at the time. It was something that had become very stress- ful, and it was weighing on me and I just didn’t like doing it.”

What a difference a year makes.
The 148th Open will be remembered as Lowry’s shining mo- ment, the moment the Irishman steadied his nerve and lifted the Claret Jug after a six-shot victory that brought the locals at Royal Portrush to their feet.
Lowry’s healthy margin over runner-up Tommy Fleetwood will make this championship seem like a stress-free runaway when the ink dries on this particular chapter of the history books, but those who witnessed the final round can attest that it was any- thing but. The thought of coughing up a four-shot lead heading into the final round of a major was a little too real for Lowry, who
had done just that three years ago at the U.S. Open at Oakmont.
So instead of getting his usual eight hours of sleep, Lowry got four, maybe five. He
tossed, turned and pondered the tantalizing opportunity that lay ahead, fully cognizant of the fact that the tournament was now his to lose.
“Wake up in the middle of the night, thinking about all sorts. And I was awake at 6:30 this morning,” said Lowry, who didn’t tee off for another seven hours after that. “Look, I think I knew that I had to fight to the bitter end today, and that’s what helped me. And that’s where I struggled at Oakmont.”
There were admittedly a few bobbles from the very start. Lowry’s final scorecard included five bogeys on a day when everyone near the top of the leaderboard struggled in swirling winds and pelt- ing rains. But a nervy opening hole left Lowry with 8 feet just to salvage bogey, a putt he holed and one that gave the Irish fans hoping to attend a coronation their first reason to cheer.
It dropped Lowry’s lead over Fleetwood to just three shots, but none of his pursuers would get any closer the rest of the day.

“It was very difficult out there, and he never lost control of him- self,” Fleetwood said. “To lead by four at the start of the day and to keep that and to just control, he literally controlled the tourna- ment from the start of today until the end. And that’s a very, very impressive thing to do.”
While his Irish Open victory a decade ago put him on the map, Lowry has spent much of his professional career in the shadows of greats that also came from the Emerald Isle. Of the last 12 edi- tions of The Open, four were won by a player from the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. That includes Lowry’s country- man, Padraig Harrington, who went back-to-back in 2007 and 2008.
Lowry was just 20 years old when Harrington lifted the Claret Jug for the first time at Carnoustie, the same place where he shed those tears just 12 months ago. He used to look with envy at the trophy that one of his idols kept on his kitchen table for a two- year stretch.
Sunday the roles were reversed, as Harrington joined the large throng of well-wishers ready to greet a euphoric Lowry after he closed out the biggest week of his career.
“I used to curse them an awful lot in the past, because that’s all anybody wanted to know about in Ireland because they were winning so many majors,” Lowry said. “’When are you going to win one?’ Winning regular events wasn’t good enough for any- one.”

The road that led Lowry from four straight missed cuts in The Open to the title of Champion Golfer of the Year was hardly a straight path. It featured a caddie change to Bo Martin and a re- invigorated investment in his mental approach with coach Neil Manchip. It included an added sense of stability alongside his wife, Wendy, and daughter, Iris.
There was the victory this year in Abu Dhabi, a runner-up finish last month in Canada and a generally upward trend in the rank- ings. But those were merely a prelude for what was to come this week at Portrush, where the Irishman put an isle on his broad shoulders and closed out a performance that will quickly become the stuff of legend.
Twelve months after The Open drove him to tears, Lowry left Portrush with chants of his name ringing in his ears and his hands around the Claret Jug, this time emotional for all the right reasons.
“I suppose I didn’t even know going out this morning if I was good enough to win a major,” Lowry said. “I just went out there and tried to give it my best. And look, I’m here now, a major champion. I can’t believe I’m saying it, to be honest.”

World No. 1 With 3 Wins in Season and 2 Wins in Major Championship

Ko Jin-young won the Evian Champion- ship (total prize money of $4.1 million) at the fourth major championship of the LPGA Tour season.
At the Evian Resort Golf Club (par 71, 6,527 yards) in Évian-les-Bains, France on Friday 28th, Ko shot a 4-under 67 with five birdies and a bogey in the fourth round of the tour- nament, finishing with a 15-under 269 to beat co-ranked Kim Hyo-joo (24), Feng Shanshan (China), and Jennifer Cupcho (U.S.A.) by two strokes to achieve her third LPGA Tour wins this season, a total of five LPGA victories. She won her second major this season following the ANA Inspiration in April. The two major victories in one season came four years after Park In-bee won the women's PGA Champi- onship and the British Open in 2015.
Ko topped the list of this season's prize money of $1,983,822 with $615,000 in prize money. She also booked the No. 1 ranking in the world as of 29th.
The match was delayed for two hours in the day due to bad weather.
Until the third round, Kim Hyo-joo was lead- ing by one stroke, Park Sung-hyun was sec- ond, Ko Jin-young and Park In-bee was four strokes behind the lead, tied for third. Ko had a tee shot in the championship group with Kim Hyo-joo and Park Sung-hyun.
Park, who lost a stroke in the first half, had a double bogey on the par-4 11th, increasing the gap to five, and Kim Hyo-joo, who had been leading by one stroke until then, had her tee shot into the bunker on the 14th hole (par 3) and failed to get out of the bunker, resulting in a triple bogey.
As the competitors collapsed, Ko made a mid- range birdie putt on the 17th hole to seal the victory.

10-under 274, and Park In-bee tied for eighth at 9-under 275. The Taeguk Warriors have won three of the four major champi- onships held this year. Ko Jin-young won the ANA Inspiration and Evian Championship as Lee Jung-eun6, 23, won the U.S. Open. The Taeguk Warriors also won 10 titles in 21 tourna- ments this year, nearly half of which were held. Then on August 1, there will be the British Women's Open, the last major tour- nament of the season.

Q. Congratulations on your victory. Tell us about the victory.
I've had a great week. I think I played well for four days and I want to thank the Evian Golf Club, LPGA fans and volunteers. I also thank all the sponsors who support me.
Today, I tried not to see other players' scores or swings, and I focused only on my scores and swings. It wasn't perfect, but it was a good game. I'm happy. I played patiently on the course. It was raining with lightning strikes, but I knew it was the same condition for all players and tried to make birdies.
I saw Lorena Ochoa this morning, and my caddie was also Lo- rena's former caddie. So I had a great talk with Lorena in the morning and was very happy. Lorena told me to get a lot of bird- ies, and I said yes.
Q. We noticed tears from you when Taegueukgi was coming down from the sky during the ceremony. What was going through your mind?
I really tried not to cry, but I couldn't stand it when I heard the national anthem after watching the Taegeukgi. I felt over- whelmed and I was thrilled to see the Taegeukgi coming down from the sky in a foreign country, and I was proud to be a Ko- rean.
Q. Two major tournaments in a row. How are you going to prepare?
It's my first major for two weeks in a row, so I think it's going to be physically difficult. It rained a lot today and the weather was cold, so it was very hard, but I will recover well today and tomorrow and do my best next game because the next game is also important.
Q. What makes you perform well in the majors?
My game is better than last year. I think I am getting good re- sults in the majors because things like drive distance, irons and putts have improved a lot. And there is an importance of caddie on the course. Especially in the majors. I think I’m doing better with my caddie this year and he is helping me a lot.

굉장한 한 주를 보냈다. 나흘 동안 잘 쳤다고 생각하고 에비앙 골프클럽과 LPGA팬, 자원봉사자에게 감사드린다. 또 나를 후 원해주시는 모든 후원사에게도 감사드린다.
오늘 다른 선수의 점수나 스윙을 보지 않으려고 노력했고, 내 점수와 스윙에만 집중했다. 완벽하지는 않지만 잘 친 경기였

다. 행복하다. 코스에서는 인내심을 갖고 플레이를 했다. 비가 왔고 가끔은 번개도 쳐서 좋지 않은 날씨였지만 모든 선수에게 똑같은 조건이라고 생각을 했고 버디를 잡기 위해 노력했다. 오늘 아침에 로레나 오초아 선수를 봤는데, 내 캐디가 로레나 의 전 캐디이기도 했다. 덕분에 아침에 로레나와 좋은 만남을 가졌고 굉장히 행복했다. 로레나가 버디를 많이 잡으라고 덕 담을 했고, 그러겠다고 대답했다.
Q. 태극기가 하늘에서 내려오는 세레모니 때 눈물을 보였는데...
진짜 안 울려고 했는데, 태극기를 보고 애국가가 들릴 때에는 참지 못하겠더라. 벅찬 기분이었고 낯선 땅에서 태극기가 하 늘에서 내려오는 모습 자체가 감격스러웠고, 한국인인 것이 자랑스러웠다.
Q. 2주 연속 메이저인데, 어떻게 대비할 것인지?
2주 연속 메이저가 처음이어서 체력적으로 힘들 것 같다는 생 각이 많이 든다. 오늘도 비가 많이 왔고 날씨가 추워서 굉장히 힘들었지만, 오늘과 내일 잘 회복해서 다음 경기도 중요하니 까 열심히 하도록 하겠다.
Q. 메이저에서 강한 이유가 있는가?
작년보다 골프가 좋아졌다. 드라이브 거리나 아이언, 퍼팅 같 은부분이많이좋아졌기때문에메이저에서좀더좋은성적 을낼수있는것같다.그리고코스에서는캐디의중요성이있

MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) - Cydney Clanton and Jasmine Suwan- napura ran away with the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational on Saturday, shooting an 11-under 59 in best-ball play for a six- stroke victory.
Clanton and Suwannapura took a five-shot lead into the final round after shooting an alternate-shot 63 on Friday at Midland Country Club in the LPGA Tour’s first-year team event. They fin- ished at 27-under 253.
“It’s pretty awesome,” Suwannapura said. “I couldn’t ask for a bet- ter partner.”
Suwannapura won her second tour title, and Clanton her first. Clanton earned spots the next two weeks in the Evian Champi- onship and Women’s British Open. The first Auburn University player to win on the tour, she began the season without a full

LPGA Tour card after finishing $8 out of the top 100 on the 2018 money list. Clanton has split time this year on the LPGA Tour and developmental Symetra Tour, winning the Symetra Tour’s El Dorado Shootout in April.
“I couldn’t even dream up to have won a Symetra event earlier this year and then to come out and win with Jasmine,” Clanton said. “It’s so funny, this is the tournament that I wanted to come and play in. I was like, ‘Team event, I’m in, let’s go.’ So, I’m blessed for the opportunity, I’m blessed that Jasmine came and let me come play with her.”
Jin Young Ko and Minjee Lee closed with a 58 to finish second. “We both played better than we did the last time we played four- balls,” Lee said. “We just had a better rhythm out there. I think we just fed off each other. Jin Young had so many birdies today, so I


just tried to keep up pretty much.”
“I’ve had full status before, but it will allow for me to kind of sit back and relax a little bit and kind of set my own schedule,” Clanton said. “I think it’s just going to free me up because it’s been some- thing that I’ve been working on. I guess I was quite down for the first couple years.”
Suwannapura, from Thailand, also won the Mara- thon Classic last year.
Clanton and Suwannapura each bogeyed the first hole, then each had eight birdies.
“Actually, felt pretty good on the first tee,” Clanton said. “Didn’t hit a great shot into the green, but I’m not going to lie, the majority of my rounds start with bogeys. So I told Jasmine, I was like, ‘Dude, we’re ready. We’re ready to go. We got it out of the way. we’ll go low.’”
Sisters Ariya Jutanugarn and Moriya Jutanugarn tied for third with Na Yeon Choi and Jenny Shin at 20 under. They each shot 61.
“So much fun,” Ariya Jutanugarn said. “Need to be patient with alternate shot, but also even best ball we still have to be patient because we feel like you going to make birdie hole after hole, but it’s not going to happen.”
Canadians Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp were fifth at 19 under after a 61.

Sei Young Kim Wins Marathon Classic

SYLVANIA, Ohio (AP) — Sei Young Kim won the Marathon Classic on Sunday for her second LPGA Tour victory of the season, making five straight birdies in a mid-round burst and shooting a 6-under 66 for a two-stroke victory over Lexi Thomp- son.
Kim began the birdie run on No. 7 and finished at a tournament- record 22-under 262 at Highland Meadows Golf Club. The 26-year-old South Korean player has nine tour titles, also win- ning the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship in May in Califor- nia.
“I really wanted another win, especially this week, because the last two weeks I play really bad,” Kim said.
Thompson, a stroke behind Kim entering the day, closed birdie- eagle for a 66.
“She played some amazing golf,” Thompson said. “I didn’t have my best ball-striking day, but 5 under, finished well. She played
amazing. It’s very well deserved.”
Six shots ahead of Thompson after the birdie run, Kim played the final seven holes in even par, offsetting a birdie on 15 with a bogey on 1. Kim broke the event mark of 263 set by In-Kyung Kim in 2017.
She’s focused on winning her first major title, with The Evian Championship and Women’s British Open coming up.
“I haven’t had a win the major tournament yet,” Kim said. “I think I try too much when I play the major tournament. I just play the same as regular tournament, even major. ... Just let it go. Let it happen.”
Stacy Lewis was third at 16 under after a 66. She was born in nearby Toledo.
“It was a lot of fun,” Lewis said. “More putts have gone in this week than in the years past. It was nice to give my family some- thing to cheer for.”

U.S. Women’s Open champion Jeongeun Lee6 had a 69 to finish fourth at 14 under.
Jennifer Kupcho tied for fifth at 11 under after a 71, playing alongside Lewis.
“Getting to play with Stacy — and Lexi yesterday — seeing how their ball-striking is and how good their iron game is, definitely something to work on and definitely can learn and did learn from their games,” Kupcho said.
The former Wake Forest star won the inaugural Augusta Nation- al Women’s Amateur in April.

Peak Performance as an athlete comes from excellent prepara- tion and consistent routines that create the space for optimal focus and engagement. Here are a few “musts” to incorporate to your play.
1.Warm-up Well: Take the time to start slow and build speed. This means hitting dozens of half-shots with wedges and mid- irons, working slowly up to a full-swing. Don’t push your body early and take the time to notice any tendencies in terms of shot- shape, trajectory, or swing mechanics. Work your way up to lon- ger shots and finish with full swings with the driver. Take that last great swing with you to the first tee.

and a good rule of thumb is to drink one of those every hour. Minimum.
5.Fuel: Golf burns around 800 calories if you’re riding in a cart and 1400 calories if you’re carrying your bag. That requires fuel. Rather than hitting a hot dog (150 calories) and a beer (150 calo- ries) at the turn, come to the course having had a sensible meal - and eat (or snack) throughout the round. Fueling properly can limit the energetic ups-and-downs that can ruin rounds. 6.Stretch: When should you stretch? Before, after, and during play. Flexibility is critical to power, consistency, and limiting in- juries. Pay attention to tightness in your quads, hamstrings, back, shoulders, and hips. Stay loose and don’t be afraid to take time between holes to stretch.
7.Making Good Decisions – Playing Within Yourself: Choosing shots that you are comfortable hitting can make a tremendous difference in your scores. If you’re not 100% confident you can pull off a shot, hit something else. Trying to be a hero can com- pound errors and ruin a scorecard.
8.Lower Expectations: This is, for most golfers, the most impor- tant skill to both improve performance and increase enjoyment. Don’t go out to the course expecting to break 70 or birdie all the par-fives. Go to the course with a learning mindset – try to do your best, to focus, and to learn from whatever happens. Being fixated on outcomes (which are almost always misaligned with athlete’s ability and preparation) is unhelpful and ruinous. Lower your expectations and enjoy the process.
9.Improve or Enjoy: Make a conscious decision to either be en- gaged in dedicated practice (improvement) or playing for fun (enjoyment). Separating these two can help you improve more during periods where you are intensely working on a skill (and evaluating the effects toward improvement) or get greater enjoy- ment out of going out and being social or enjoying an afternoon on the course. Trying to mix the two is incredibly difficult, if not impossible. Dedicated practice (improvement) is a mental and physical grind that works. Playing for fun and enjoyment is just
2.Game Speed: With a solid warm-up under your belt, evaluate your body and build up to game speed as the round progresses. Don’t try to go out swinging 100%. Let the quality of shots and speed that you bring to the course build as the round develops (and save energy of fuel up to finish strong).
3.Breathe: There’s no greater indicator to how well you are regu- lating your emotions than your breathing. Relax between shots; take deep breaths in and let slow exhales out; and if you are feel- ing tight or anxious about a particular shot, reset your pre-shot routine, and take an extra few seconds to get the rhythm back in your breathing.
4.Hydrate: Athletes are much better about hydrating than they used to be, but almost every amateur I see is under-hydrating. There are just shy of 17 ounces in most commercial water bottles,

as valuable, but for more emotional and spiritual reasons.
10. End Well: Take the time to put every round into context, and leave the course with something you have learned, some- thing you did well, and something you’d like to improve through dedicated practice. If you have to spend extra time on the putting green or driving range at the end of the day, do it...as long as you leave the course fulfilled and with a sense of purpose and perspective. Golf can be a bit like a bad relationship if you’re not careful...don’t go to bed (i.e. leave the course) angry or frustrat- ed. It’s a game, and whether you’re there to just enjoy yourself or to show steady improvement, you need to leave each session with something that will bring you back.

Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i (July 16, 2019) – Kaua‘i’s spectacular collec- tion of golf courses were recently honored by Golfweek in the publication’s annual Best Golf Courses rankings of Hawai‘i and the nation’s finest golf properties.
In Golfweek’s 2019 “Best Courses You Can Play, State-by-State” list, Golfweek’s panel of course raters named four Kaua‘i cours- es among the 15 best courses in Hawai‘i, including Princeville Makai Golf Club at No. 4, Poipu Bay Golf Course at No. 6, The Ocean Course at Hokuala at No. 11, and Wailua Golf Course at No. 14. Kaua‘i (four courses) and Maui (four courses) had the most courses listed of any Hawaiian island.
In Golfweek’s newly published Best 2019: Top 200 Resort Cours- es in the United States list, Kaua‘i had three courses listed among the top 150, including Princeville Makai Golf Club (Princeville Resort) at No. 54, Poipu Bay Golf Course (Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa) at No. 85, and The Ocean Course at Hokuala (Tim- bers Resort Kaua‘i) at No. 145.

Reflection Bay Golf Club’s Golf Academy Attracts

Henderson, NV. – In less than a year after opening, the High Performance Golf Institute (HPGI), Reflection Bay Golf Club’s student academy, is already guiding champions under the instruction of PGA pros Craig Barlow and Jeff Gallagher. The pair are behind a number of young local golfers who have recent- ly stepped into the national spotlight, including 2019 Drive, Chip and Putt champion Yana Wilson and Coronado High School stu- dent Michael Sarro, who recently claimed the individual title at the Class 4a Nevada high school state golf tournament.
“We have really enjoyed helping so many of our students in their success this past year,” said Barlow, whose career included 18 years in the PGA and Web.com Tours. “The Reflection Bay course has offered a great opportunity for Jeff and I to coach us- ing the best possible technology and greens. The golf course and all the amenities are truly like nothing else in Las Vegas.”
HPGI is made up of more than 100 students, with roughly one- third of the students being adults and two-thirds being juniors. Along with a four-hole training area on the former Falls Golf Course, students are able to hone their skills inside the newly designed hitting bay, featuring TrackMan technology used to perfect even the most seasoned golfer’s swing.
“We use the hitting bay quite a bit. It’s been great for improving my short game, which is something Craig has really helped me with,” said Wilson, 12, who started working with Barlow a year ago.
The Henderson, Nevada, native has advanced to three region- als in her short career and recently took first place in Augusta, Georgia where she fought in a sudden-death round and claimed the 2019 Drive, Chip and Putt championship in the girls 12- to 13-year-old division. Wilson said working with Barlow has helped her with preparing for the mental side of the game and has inspired her dream to become one of the top young golfers in the state.
“Yana is a lion in a sense that she’s super competitive and she wants to beat me every time we play, and she’s only 12 years old,” Barlow said. “You’re not taught something like that – you’re born with that.”
Sarro, a recent graduate from Coronado High School and up- coming freshman golfer at California Baptist University in River- side is another one Barlow’s star pupils making an impression on

the West Coast. The 18-year-old captured the individual title at the Class 4a Nevada high school state golf tournament at Somer- sett Country Club in Reno in a one-hole playoff and led his team to a second consecutive state victory.
Sarro started working with Barlow when he was coaching at An- them Country Club in Henderson. He followed Barlow to Re- flection Bay last summer and continued to perfect his putting and his confidence on the course.
“Craig has just an extremely good short game and he’s helped me improve a lot,” Sarro said. “He’s taught me about the mental side of golf too and has really helped me develop my chipping and putting skills in the last year.”

The training program, called Club Champion University (CCU), now includes a 144-page manual, six professors, two weeks of classroom learning and mock fitting, followed by another two weeks of live fitting with the team at the Chicagoland headquar- ters. Hosted every two weeks, the program is the first step in be- coming a certified Club Champion fitter.

Sherburne himself is the Dean of CCU, personally overseeing all of the processes and fitters.
