WHAT IS THE BIG “L” CLUB?

The Big “L” Club was established in 1958 and was formed by a group of dedicated supporters to become the ofcial sports
booster of LHS. The Club’s primary purpose is to support the Lancer Athletic Program while boosting morale. The athletic program
now elds more than 60 teams at the varsity, junior varsity, and freshman levels.

The Big “L” Club supports the Athletic Program throughout the entire year sponsoring the Fall, Winter, and Spring Awards nights
presenting award plaques to the athletes who have received outstanding recognition at the conference, county, and state levels.

The Big “L” Club continues to induct into the Hall of Fame, honoring the recipients at a Hall of Fame Brunch in October. Each
year in May, our senior athletes look forward to participating in our Lancers on Parade Fundraiser, where our very own LHS
student athletes get to showcase outts and enjoy food donated from local vendors. It is truly an inspiring night for our community
to come together as local businesses, restaurants, and clothing vendors embrace Livingston’s nest, making it a special night for
our seniors. In June, as the school year comes to a close, The Big ”L” hosts a Pep Rally for the entire senior class where the LHS
male and female athlete of the year is announced, and we honor all of our senior athletes, cheerleaders and band members. At the
Pep Rally we provide a motivational speaker to motivate the senior class and also announce our gift of the year to the Livingston
Athletic Department.

The Big “L” Club also contributes time and funds to a variety of projects to benet Livingston High School athletes and the
student body at large. In the past, we have gifted exercise equipment for the tness and wellness center, helped purchase the
softball scoreboard and golf cart for our LHS sports trainers, donated a Hall of Fame Wall which proudly presents all of our time
honored athletes in the wellness center. The Big L provided video cameras and software for all of our LHS coaches and teams to
use for instructional purposes as well as two portable speakers and a tunnel of success were donated for all teams to use for their
big games. To boost the spirit of LHS, The Big L Club has purchased a mascot, Sir Lawrence the Lancer. Sir Lawrence attends
various school and sporting events throughout the year. Most recently, a portable scoreboard, a donation to the baseball dugouts,
and The Big L Snack Shop were donated. The Snack Shop will provide FREE snacks to all our in-season athletes so they can
refuel after school, before a game, or practice.

The Big “L” Club gives our community a reason to come together to participate and cheer for our LHS sports teams. Thank you
for your support, as The Big “L” Club will continue to dedicate ourselves to honor tradition and continue to enhancing our athletic
program.

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Dear Lancers:
I take this opportunity to wish you all the best as you begin the 2017-2018 season in your chosen
sport. Moreover, I thank you for your commitment to your team, your efforts in improving your
skill sets, and your willingness to represent Livingston High School in such a positive manner on
the field of competition. No matter what your role is, your contributions lead to the overall success
of Lancer Athletics.
We owe our gratitude to Mr. Dave Cohen, our Athletic Director, and all of the Lancer coaches
who dedicate their time and talents to supporting our student athletes in their pursuits of excellence
both on and off the field. They represent the spirit, compassion, work ethic, respect, and balance
that lead to team success.

Go Lancers!
Mark Stern

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Dear Lancers:
Our athletic program is bolstered by our outstanding booster organization, The Big L Club. Made
up entirely of parents and members of the our community, The Big L Club is committed to
supporting all student athletes at Livingston High School by donating additional training
equipment, providing nutritious snacks for teammates while in season, and celebrating the entirety
of their LHS tenure through the creation of the annual Senior Pep Rally.
As we have said over the years, there is only one way to achieve in athletics, the Lancer way.
Together, we exemplify teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship that are recognized by all
schools with whom we compete. I look forward to cheering you on and celebrating your successes
with you along the way.

Go Lancers!
Dave Cohen

DEDICATION

Big L Club Dedicates 2017 Fall Sports Journal To:

Bobby Breschard

Bobby Breschard just completed his 21st year as a teacher
at Livingston High School, and his 22nd season as a high
school coach. In the classroom and on the athletic elds,
“Coach B” as he is respectfully called by his students and
athletes, has established himself as a well-respected mem-
ber of the Livingston High School community.

As a teacher, Coach B is a valued member of the physi-
cal education department. In that role, he has taught on
both the elementary and high school levels and has had a
tremendous impact on his students. Outside of the lines of
football, Coach B has been an inuential role model for the
student-athletes in regards to getting them to understand
the importance of academics in their future.

Last year as a new member of the New Jersey Super Foot-
ball Conference, Coach Breschard led the team to a 5 – 5
record in one of the toughest public school conferences
in the state of New Jersey. This successful season came
together through the hard work of all of the players and
coaches who serve under Coach B’s leadership.

In addition to being a successful coach and teacher at the High School, Coach B has stepped up to
lead the Student Big L Club, which was formed to promote school spirit within the Lancer athletic de-
partment. In this role, Coach B has volunteered countless hours to support Lancer athletics.
In his time away from being a coach and teacher, Coach Breschard is actively involved with both his
son Bobby and daughter Emma, and still makes time for his supportive wife Vanessa, who can be
seen cheering the Lancers on at all of the games.

Congratulations to Coach Breschard for your contributions as a teacher and coach to Livingston High
School and best of luck for many years of future success.

FOOTBALL

The 2017 Livingston Lancer football team will be entering the year with some veteran returning players and some
new faces. The returners will be called upon to provide leadership to build off last year’s season. With explosive and skilled
players and a solid offensive line, the offense looks to continue to put pressure on opponents with a high-tempo, no huddle
offense. The defense this year is extremely fast and flies to the ball carrier. The team has put in tremendous work in the
summer and through the work in a tough football camp. With opening day against Randolph on September 1st quickly
approaching the Lancers are excited for the challenge ahead.

BOY’S CROSS COUNTRY

The 2017 Cross Country season promises to be a very exciting one on the boy’s side with a mix of
experienced and inexperienced runners. The Lancers will be led by a strong senior class of runners. Senior
varsity returnees Daniel Cao, Max Nunez, Eric Mooney and Raymon Yang look to build off their experiences
and successes from last season and look to lead the team to victory in the season ahead. The team also
welcomes back seniors Caleb Chow, Adrian Chun, Robert Chun as well as welcomes rst time senior Johnson
Feng to the team.

The team should benet from added depth, the return of a very strong junior and sophomore class
and one of the largest freshman classes in recent history. The team is looking forward to the return of Jona-
than Ackerman, Jonathan Chen, Ido Kadouri, Jeremy Wong, Cristian Zapata, Andrew Brennan, Matt Leviss,
Philmon Mehari and Evan Tomasco to the lineup. With 18 freshman names on the roster, the coaching staff is
excited to meet and work with many new student athletes over the course of the season.

The team will be opening this season in early September at Branch Brook Park with the rst of 4 dual
meet competitions. The teams’ success this season will depend on a strong focused work ethic throughout the
line-up, staying healthy and a positive cohesive team attitude that can stay focused on achieving team goals.

GIRL’S CROSS COUNTRY

The 2017 Girls Cross Country program will shortly open their season competing in the Super Essex
Conference (SEC). After a one year stint in the Liberty Division of the SEC, the girls return to the American Division
to do battle with the top teams in the county. The season shows promise as the Lancers return all but one of the
top 7 from last year’s squad. The team should also benet from some new talent eager to earn a varsity spot.
The coaching staff has challenging yet attainable goals for the lady lancers this season, as they look to show
improvement on the Conference, County and State levels building off the 2016 season which had some bright spots
and good memories. The squad will be competing in dual, invitational and championship meets on the freshman,
junior varsity, and varsity levels. Many of the girls have been working all summer long to better their chances of
obtaining the team goals. The schedule includes clashes with some of the top teams in the state which should
prepare the squad for the championship season.

The team should benet from returning seniors Anna Levy and Amanda Clark along with juniors Samantha
Keenan and Emily Arends who were top 7 nishers last season. Sophomore Erin Chang, who had a stellar rookie
year making it to the Group 4 meet last fall, is back along with fellow sophomore Shannon O’Connor also a regular
in the top 7 last season. These girls are eagerly looking forward to another season of hard racing in the woods. The
addition of newcomers, sophomore Nicole Rong and freshman Katrina Leigh, should positively impact the program
during the 2017 campaign as they have looked good in their summer training runs. Junior Rachel Drill, sophomores
Kayla Hudson and Ririko Nakayama could also make strong contributions to the success of this season.
The Lancers, while returning some strong competitors, will also be working on developing more depth and
consistency throughout the lineup. This includes some returners and some new additions to the roster such as,
Desiree Joseph, Carolina Lima, Jordyn Sharon, Shaney Sharon, Gabriella Rossi, Morgan Levy, Celeste Calderon,
and Elizabeth Lam. A group of frosh including Carly Arends, Eliana Bershard, Samantha Lee, Gloria Liu, Ashley Pearl
and Ellie Nadelman will also be looking to develop and contribute during their rst XC season which should make this
a memorable one.

The squad is nishing up its preseason summer training program laying a base for the fall training and racing
schedule. The teams’ success will depend on a strong focused work ethic throughout the line-up, staying healthy,
believing in each other and developing condence in their own abilities. If everyone does their part to contribute to
the team goals then the individual goals will take care of themselves. Coach Czeizinger, Coach Memory and Coach
Chaudruc are all looking forward to working with the team to reach its goals and enjoy a memorable season.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL LIVINGSTON LANCERS!

Calabria is a pizzeria, restaurant, and bar wrapped up into an extraordinary one-
stop shop of Italian indulgence. Owned and operated by brothers Joe and Dino, this authentic spot

specializes in homemade meals and friendly service. The pizza toppings are diverse, plentiful, and popular.
The homespun pasta dishes like Linguini Nero Santa Lucia made with homemade black linguini and baby
clams in a rich garlic and oil wine sauce are consistent crowd-pleasers. Additionally, the meat dishes are a
Calabria specialty—particularly the tender Osso Buco Milanese, served over creamy risotto. Satisfying
clientele for over 20 years now, Calabria is well-known for serving the freshest ingredients available, whether
they’re served in the elegant dining room, the casual pizzeria, or even the bar. The newest edition are the
WineStations, both located in the pizzeria and main dining room. Guest can enjoy a glass or two of the finest
wines without splurging on an entire bottle and tasting quite a few. Also, the brand new bar menu features
delectable dishes like their creamy Lobster Mac 'n' Cheese and beef sliders. This Italian trifecta couldn’t be
more accommodating to the diner's every need—they do everything from large-scale catering, to off-site pizza
parties, to offering an entire gluten-free menu (with pizza and Rigatoni Con Crema and Ravioli Parmigiana) for
those Italian fans with dietary restrictions. Remember, every Thursday $6 Martini Night and on Wednesdays -
Scotch, Cigars, and Steaks. You can smoke your cigar on the terrace. Calabria does it all, in excellent taste.
Also, come in and check out Friday Night Pre-Set dinners and Wine Tastings at the Roundtable, seating is
limited to 12, so be sure to make a reservation.

BOY’S SOCCER

This season may nd the Lancers Boys Varsity Soccer Team in a rebuild stage. Having graduated fourteen se-
niors, and only returning ve seniors, presents this year’s team with a number of question marks. Junior Brian
Kelly is the only player on the roster to appear in every game last year. This year’s roster includes seniors
Scott Grossman, Jesse Ma, Josh Feinberg, Jared Sakwa, and Christian Connolly. Joining junior Brian Kelly will
be fellow juniors Ryan Melnick and Aria Navi, all three of these juniors will be relied on to log a large number of
minutes on the eld this year, and will also need to chip in on offense. Franco Burga another junior has been
a nice surprise so far, Burga registered two goals in a scrimmage and has shown some play making ability.
Defender Philippe Jallow, midelder Chris Werner, goalkeeper Grifn Ehrich round out the junior class. A bulk
of the roster this year will come from a talented sophomore class. Six of these sophomores saw extensive time
last year with the varsity and they all will be battling for starting positions. Twin brothers Harrison and Zachary
Berkley lead the way followed by Daniel Cho, Phillip Rodrigues, Cooper Grossman. Elijah Elster will get the
starting job in goal, and Abe Rimatzki should compete for a starting spot on defense.
The team will be competing in the American Conference of the SEC, which is probably one of the top three
conferences in the State of New Jersey. Teams to beat in the conference once again will be Seton Hall Prep,
Essex County Champion Newark East Side, and power houses West Orange, Montclair, and Millburn. West
Essex is primed for a breakout year so it’s going to be a difcult season game in and game out with very few
breaks on the schedule.
We will be looking to keep the games close, limit our opponent’s chances, and hopefully strike when given our
opportunities. If we can play together as a team and work hard for eighty minutes we may be able to surprise
some of the teams who are favorites to challenge for the conference title.
