12 Allied English for Everyone Grade 4 Approved by CDC, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur Reading The Indolent Frog Once upon a time, an indolent young frog was sitting by a stream and gazing at the world around him. He saw birds flying high in the sky. The sun shone brightly. He could hear the chirping of birds in the trees around. As he sat quietly, basking in the sun, he saw a beautiful butterfly flying from flower to flower. Somewhere, he heard the bellow of a cow. Everything seemed calm, and he was on the point of closing his eyes. Suddenly, he saw a fish racing through the clear water of the river. The graceful movements of the fish fascinated the frog very much. He decided to learn to swim like one too. He greeted a passing fish and said, “Dear fish, I am very keen to learn swimming. Will you be good enough to teach me how to swim like yourself?” The fish agreed but said, “You can learn swimming only if you are willing to put in a lot of effort.” “Oh, I’m willing to do anything to swim like you,” said the frog excitedly, and began taking swimming lessons from the fish. He watched the fish carefully, watching the way the tail moved and the fins slide along the water. The frog worked really hard for the first few days. Day and night, he practised whatever the fish taught him. However, he soon got fed up of the hard work he had to put in and decided to relax for some time. Once again he relaxed by the same pond. It was a bright, sunny day, and good for basking in the sun. As he was about to shut his eyes, he saw a wild hare running swiftly past him. The frog was impressed with the swift movements of the hare and said to himself, “The hare runs with the speed of lightning. Even if I were to swim like the fish, I would not be able to match the speed of
13 Approved by CDC, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur Allied English for Everyone Grade 4 the hare on the ground. I think I had better learn from the hare how to move fast.” So the frog approached the fish the next day and said, “I think I have learnt to swim fast enough. Now I want to learn to run as fast as the hare.” The fish was taken by surprise and said, “You still have a lot to learn. I told you it would take a great deal of effort to learn to swim like me. Come now, practise your swimming lessons.” But the frog refused to listen to the fish. Instead, he went to the hare and told him, “Our bodies are so similar. Both of us have short front legs and long back ones. However, I want to look like you more by learning to run as fast as you. Will you please teach me the art of running swiftly?”
14 Allied English for Everyone Grade 4 Approved by CDC, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur The hare was so amused to hear the frog talking about their similarity. He burst out laughing. Still, he agreed to teach the frog the art of running and warned him about the hard work and patience required to run like him. The frog was willing to do anything. From that day onwards, the hare gave the frog, running lessons daily. Soon the frog was able to jump a little more than usual, and was very proud of the progress he was making. But in no time, he got tired of the difficult training. One day, he sat and thought, ‘I have now mastered the art of swimming in water and running on land. There is no other creature in the world who can do both these things as well as I.’ So he approached the hare and said, “I have learnt enough by now and will take your leave.” The hare was astonished and said,
15 Approved by CDC, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur Allied English for Everyone Grade 4 “What makes you think you have learnt to run like me? Don’t be foolish! Continue your lessons”. But the frog paid no heed to the hare’s words and went off. That is why frogs neither swim properly in water, nor run swiftly on land. And whenever snakes catch a frog in the water, or by children on land, it says to itself, “Oh, why didn’t I learn properly when I had the opportunity? I realise now that it is impossible to learn anything without hard work and determination.” GLOSSARY indolent : lazy gazing : looking fixedly chirping : producing a short and sharp sound basking : lying or relaxing happily in a bright and warm place bellow : shout in a deep voice graceful : moving in a smooth and attractive way fascinated : caused (someone) to be very interested in something or someone fins : thin flat parts that stick out from the body of a fish and are used in moving or guiding the fish through water swiftly : quickly or immediately impressed : caused to feel interest or admiration approached : moved or became near or nearer to something or someone mastered : learnt something completely astonished : caused a feeling of great wonder or surprise in (someone) heed : attention or notice determination : a quality that makes you continue trying to do or achieve something that is difficult

The King of Football Football legend Pelé is from Brazil, a country in South America. He was born in October 23, 1940 in one of the small villages of Brazil. There were three children in his family. They lived with his parents, his grandmother, and his mom’s brother. The family was poor. This didn’t stop Pelé from making his dream come true. He wanted to be a top football player, and he was. As a child, Pelé helped his uncle sell wood. Pelé also sold peanuts and shined shoes to make money. When he wasn’t working, Pelé would play football with his neighbors. He was a wonderful player. The neighborhood children played in bare feet. They didn’t always have a football. Sometimes they had to use a can, a grapefruit, a coconut, or rolled up socks. This didn’t matter to Pelé though. He said, “Everything is practice.”
30 Allied English for Everyone Grade 4 Approved by CDC, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur Pelé’s father helped Pelé learn to play football. His dad had been a good football player. He had to give it up because of a knee problem. Like his dad, Pelé learned to knock the ball into the goal with his head. At eighteen, Pelé joined the army in Brazil for one year. He began playing football for an army team. Then he played for Brazil’s national team. The World Cup is the biggest prize in football. Pelé is still the only person who has played on three World Cup winning teams. He helped Brazil to win in 1958, 1962, and 1970. In 1969, people cheered when Pelé scored goal number 1,000 of his football

No matter what he did or where he went, he had special clothes for each occasion. The villagers claimed he had a different coat for every hour of every day, Many strangers travelled through the city where the Emperor lived. One day two cheats came into town and claimed they were the finest weavers in the world. They said they could weave a cloth unlike any cloth ever woven before. Not only were the designs and colours remarkably beautiful, but the cloth had a special quality. This material became invisible to anyone who was very stupid or who was unfit for his job.
38 Allied English for Everyone Grade 4 Approved by CDC, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur “I must have some of this cloth woven for me right away,” said the Emperor “then I will be able to tell wise men from fools, and I will know who is unfit for the office they hold.” The Emperor had the weavers set up their looms and gave them all the gold and silk thread they needed. The weavers kept the expensive thread for themselves and pretended to weave the cloth. Each day they requested more silk and gold thread. But, they didn’t use any of them on the loom. The Emperor was very anxious to see the cloth; however, he remembered what the weavers said, “Anyone unfit for his position or very stupid would not be able to see it.” ‘’I know I am a good Emperor,” he thought, “but it might be best to have someone else look at the material first.” He decided to send his wise and capable minister. “Oh my,’’ thought the minister as he gazed at the empty loom, “I see nothing at all!” He could not let anyone know, or they would think him unfit to be a minister. ‘’What beautiful colour you’ve woven,” he said, ‘’I know the Emperor will be pleased.” He didn’t tell the truth because he was afraid that the weavers would prove him foolish and incapable. The next day the Emperor and several high officials went to see the cloth. The two thugs held up their arms and pretended to display the material. ‘’I see nothing at all,” thought the Emperor to himself. “Can I be unfit for my position? I cannot let anyone know.” “Beautiful,” he exclaimed, “that design is just what I wanted.” The officials couldn’t believe their eyes. They couldn’t see the cloth either but repeated the Emperor’s praises. ‘’You will have to wear new clothes made from this material in the Royal procession,” they exclaimed.
