THE EBONY SUBURBANITES The Ebony Suburbanites is a nonprofit organization which has been in existence for fifty years. The organization is comprised of 35 dynamic ladies, who are pillars in the community, committed to promoting scholarship and developing character, civic mindedness and leadership qualities among the youth primarily in Middlesex and Somerset counties. Through the years, the Ebony Suburbanites have sponsored numerous community and fundraising affairs. Of these events, the “Silhouettes of Loveliness Debutante Cotillion” has been the group’s main function. At this affair, young women are presented to society by highlighting their academic achievements, community involvement and intent to pursue higher education. Those high school seniors selected to participate are recommended by their guidance counselors, their clergy and community leaders. Along with the young women, there are also young men who share in this experience. These young men are chosen by the “debs” to serve as their escorts for the Cotillion activities. These activities start several weeks before the actual affairs. They include a cultural trip, a career day and etiquette/charm classes. Proceeds from the Cotillion, both fundraising and journal ad sales, as well as private scholarship donations, are awarded to each debutante as a monetary scholarship to further her education. To date, the Ebony Suburbanites have presented over 700 debutantes to society and have awarded over 1.5 million in scholarships.

President’s Message It is an honor to be a member of the Ebony Suburbanites an organization that is celebrating 50 years of excellence recognizing young women for their commitment to academic achievement and community service. Thank you, debutantes, for your dedication and determination as you prepared for the 50th Annual “Silhouettes of Loveliness” Debutante Cotillion. Right from the start you demonstrated a strong willingness to succeed by raising money towards your very own academic scholarship. That is awesome! You may not realize it but your participation at weekly rehearsals, the etiquette tea, community service, retreat, and cultural events has changed your trajectory. As time moves along you will reflect on your accomplishments and experiences and understand the profound impact it has had on your life. 35 years ago I was an Ebony Suburbanites debutante in attendance to see the South African play Sarafina. I did not realize then that the exposure and experience would land me in the county of South Africa some years later on a Fulbright Scholarship. Debutantes, allow this experience to broaden your horizons. Take it and keep moving forward. Escorts you showed up to Saturday rehearsals always with a smile. You dedicated your time and energy with enthusiasm. Thank you for supporting the debutantes. The annual cotillion would not be the same without you. Parents, guardians, sponsors, church families, and friends, the debutantes’ accomplishments could have not been possible without your love and support. You have made a significant difference in their lives. The fruits of your labor will come to fruition. Thank you for entrusting this organization with the gems you were blessed with. The Ebony Suburbanites are surrounded by scholarship donors from the community that contribute to the academic success of our young ladies. Thank you, donors. We are grateful and could have not gotten this far without you. Members of the Ebony Suburbanites you are a phenomenal group of women who I am proud to call my sisters. I am the woman who I am today because of the women who stood before me and the women who stand right beside me. Thank you members for all of your positive energy and support. Gratefully Yours, Kisha M. Adkins Ebony Suburbanites, President

Shanice Jackson Cotillion Chairperson My name is Shanice Jackson & I am proud to serve as the current Vice President & Cotillion Chair of the Ebony Suburbanites. It has been a great honor to serve as Cotillion Chair of the 50th Annual Debutante Cotillion as we celebrate our fiftieth anniversary & a true “Legacy of Loveliness”. I have had a special relationship with the Ebony Suburbanites for over ten years, as I attended my first cotillion fourteen years ago. I was a guest of debutante Cherie Johnson who is my friend and former classmate & neighbor. I still remember that night & how blown away I was with the debutante presentation & overall splendor of the evening. I just knew that I had to be a part of such an illustrious organization. I participated in the cotillion the next year and have been enamored with the Ebony Suburbanites ever since. As a club member & past debutante, I have had the opportunity to witness several friends, relatives, and church members participate in the cotillion. I’ve also met & worked with several accomplished, dedicated, and service minded women that make up the Ebony Suburbanites. I must thank each and every club member for their service and hard work to ensure that the debutantes and escorts have a memorable and fulfilling cotillion experience. We simply could not make the Debutante Cotillion the lovely event that it is year after year without the constant dedication of each Cotillion Committee chairperson & member. Thank you for all that you are & all that you do for our young people, organization, and community. We are celebrating fifty years of tradition, scholarship, and service because of you! I pray that this night is a night to remember for our debutantes. I am inspired by each of you and cannot wait to see the places you’ll go and the things that you will do. Tonight you join an amazing group of women known as “Silhouettes of Loveliness”. I hope that you remember your time as a debutante fondly and that you never forget just how brilliant and lovely you all are. Thank you to each parent, sponsor, family member, and mentor for your support. Our debutantes are blessed to have a village like you! Congratulations to the Class of 2023! Shanice E. N. Jackson Vice President | Cotillion Chair Ebony Suburbanites

Jill Pressley Program Chairperson It has been a pleasure to serve as Program Chairperson for the 2023 “Silhouettes of Loveliness Cotillion”. This year we are celebrating the 50th Cotillion with the Ebony Suburbanites and after 3 years we have our junior escorts participating in the Cotillion again. I have really enjoyed working with the debutantes and their escorts. The debutantes have had a full calendar. In between selling advertisements and holding fundraisers, they found time to enjoy an afternoon Etiquette Tea and evening retreat. During the tea, the debutantes and escorts refined their table etiquette and interview skills. Special thanks to Dewanna Graham for facilitating the tea. During the retreat, the debutantes enjoyed an evening of getting to know each other. We all talked and ate good food that included a make your own sundae bar. The debutantes made cotillion dresses out of toilette tissue and walked the runway. We learned about different personalities using a color guide and how each color explains how we interact together. Special thanks to Staci Yarborough for facilitating the color and personalities discussions. Through a special discount provided by The George Street Playhouse president, Dr. Penelope Lattimer and the generous donation of Dr. Louis Ray and Dr. Muriel Grimmett Ray, tickets were provided for Ebony Suburbanites debutantes and escorts to attend the production “The Spelling Bee”. Also, the debutantes and escorts participated in an interactive experience between the audience and the writers as part of the Genesis Festival of New Voices-‘The Gospel Woman” at Crossroads. The debutantes had many supportive individuals encouraging and assisting them through the Cotillion process. I would like to thank all the parents, guardians, sponsors, families & friends for their gifts of time, energy and love that were given generously to all the debutantes. And we give a special thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Charles Irving for allowing us to use their home for our evening retreat. I also would like to thank the members of the program committee for all their hard work and dedication. I salute all who played any part in making the 2023 Silhouettes of Loveliness Cotillion an affair to remember.

When she is not in school participating in extracurricular activities or cheerleading, Imani is employed part-time at the Goddard School where she is the assistant teacher. During the summers she is a junior camp counselor at the Cedar brook Day Camp. Working with children and the campers gives Imani joy. She loves seeing their little faces light up when she helps them achieve their goals.
