THE EBONY SUBURBANITES

The Ebony Suburbanites is a nonprofit organization which has been in existence for forty-eight
years. The organization is comprised of 27 dynamic ladies, who are pillars in the community,
committed to promoting scholarship and developing character, civic mindedness and leadership
qualities among the youth primarily in Middlesex and Somerset counties.

Through the years, the Ebony Suburbanites have sponsored numerous community and fundraising
affairs. Of these events, the “Silhouettes of Loveliness Debutante Cotillion” has been the group’s
main function. At this affair, young women are presented to society by highlighting their academic
achievements, community involvement and intent to pursue higher education. Those high school
seniors selected to participate are recommended by their guidance counselors, their clergy and
community leaders.

Along with the young women, there are also young men who share in this experience. These
young men are chosen by the “debs” to serve as their escorts for the Cotillion activities. These
activities start several weeks before the actual affairs. They include a cultural trip, a career day
and etiquette/charm classes.

Proceeds from the Cotillion, both fundraising and journal ad sales, as well as private scholarship
donations, are awarded to each debutante as a monetary scholarship to further her education. To
date, the Ebony Suburbanites have presented over 700 debutantes to society and have awarded
over 1.5 million in scholarships.

President’s Message

On behalf of the Ebony Suburbanites, I thank you for
your commitment to the 48th Annual Silhouettes of
Loveliness Debutante Cotillion. Since its inception, we
have recognized hundreds of young women and men
for their commitment to academic excellence and
community service. The Cotillion is a salute to their
success as well as a culmination of their dedication to
this process. We revel in the opportunity to shine a
light on their accomplishments, while also
acknowledging that it is bittersweet to say farewell to
this very special class of debutantes.

This year’s debutantes were trailblazers in our first fully virtual Cotillion process. We have
been honored to witness the greatness in each of them. From the interviews to the virtual
ceremony…and every day in between…our debutantes showed us what it means to
persevere through any challenge. They were committed to every part of the Ebony
Suburbanites experience and worked hard to raise money for their college education. We
hope that the scholarships that they have earned will serve as a springboard to their
educational pursuits and that they have developed friendships that will last a lifetime.
Debutantes…you will always be a part of our Ebony Suburbanites family, and we look
forward to staying connected with you!

To the parents, guardians, sponsors, and friends, we thank you for entrusting us with your
children. We do recognize that it was also a commitment for you, and we appreciate the
effort that you put in week after week. We hope that your children will treasure this
experience and that the lessons they have learned will be with them forever.

To our donors, we are honored to partner with you to acknowledge the achievements of our
debutantes and support their academic and career aspirations. We appreciate you, and we
look forward to your continued support and partnership for many years to come.

To our Cotillion Chairperson, Alicia Chambers-Williams, and every Ebony Suburbanites
member, I thank you for your unwavering enthusiasm, leadership, and perseverance. I am
honored to stand side by side with you as we continue to show our commitment to the
communities that we serve. Thank you for stepping up to the plate this year as you do every
year! When faced with yet another challenge, you made the hard decisions…put in the hard
work…and showed in endless ways how dedicated you are to our debutantes and the
mission of our great organization.

Sincerely,

Shawn Harvey Roberson

Vice President & Cotillion Chairperson

My name is Alicia Chambers-Williams, and I am Vice-
President of the Ebony Suburbanites as well as this year’s
Cotillion Chair. In addition to my duties as Vice-President,
I am also charged with overseeing the committees that
prepare and make the cotillion come to life! This year has
been like no other for the Ebony Suburbanites!
Everything from contacting the guidance counselors for
potential debutantes to rehearsing for the epic debutante
dance has been done virtually…and our club members
had to adjust and learn new technology fast! Through it
all, we managed to have yet another successful year!

These seven young ladies have been nothing short of amazing! Along with adapting to a new way of
socializing and completing assignments for school, they also found the time to attend virtual rehearsals,
as well as develop unique ideas on how to sell ads and hold fundraisers in a world where what we were
used to came to a screeching halt. I had the pleasure of officially meeting these young ladies at our first
official Zoom meeting on April 24th, and I felt their excitement and enthusiasm through the lens! They
were ready to begin their journey as debutantes and raise money to help further their education. I also
had the opportunity to join their rehearsals and watch them learn their dance virtually…and you can see
their commitment to the program. I witnessed the friendships that were being created that will last a
lifetime and their dedication to their future. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for them.

In closing, I would like to thank my Cotillion Committees for all their hard work this year.

 Lola Samuel and the Screening Committee for tirelessly working with the guidance counselors, the
candidates and parents to conduct our first ever virtual information session, application and
interviewing process.

 Jill Pressley, Staci Yarbrough and the Program Committee for developing unique ideas to keep the
debutantes engaged in addition to providing mentors to guide the debutantes along the way.

 Alyssa Blake, Ericka Truesdale and the Scholarship Committee for the difficult job of tracking the
remittance of journal ads and fundraising proceeds as well as overseeing the Special Scholarships
process.

 Kisha Adkins and the Journal Committee for their dedication to working with the parents and the
debutantes to make sure journal ads were submitted properly and preparing the souvenir journal.

 Lastly, to the Virtual Cotillion Committee for working with me to prepare and organize the 48th
Annual Ebony Suburbanites “Silhouettes of Loveliness” Debutante Cotillion.

I am forever grateful to all of you for your continued dedication and support.

Sincerely,

Alicia Chambers-Williams

Jill Pressley &Staci Yarborough

We have been honored to partner as Co-Chairs for the Program Committee for the 2021
“Silhouettes of Loveliness Cotillion” and to work with this year’s exceptional Debutantes over
these past several months.
In this year we all continued to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, however this amazing
and resilient group of young ladies stepped into their role as Debutantes and fully participated in
the program activities. The Program Committee offered most of our program activities virtually
and tried to offer engaging opportunities for our Debutantes that would allow them to get to
know each other and gain skills that we believe will assist as they move on to the next phase of
their lives. The Debutantes participated in self-awareness activities and learned more about how
personality influences everyday life, were challenged to reflect on their civic roles within their
own communities during a presentation by Itunu Balogun, successfully worked as a team to find
their way out of an escape room, learned more about how to assess their impact on the world
with author Ashton Burrell, showed their creativity in a virtual painting class and laughed and
played games in our virtual retreat. The debutantes did all of this while still finding time to sell
advertisements, hold fundraisers, and learn the dance you will see during the cotillion. Special
thanks to Norma McLean (Bam) our choreographer.
As we all know, our young adults rely on the love and encouragement of their parents, guardians,
sponsors, families and friends as they participate in the cotillion process, emerge as young
women and prepare to take the exciting next steps of furthering their education. We thank you
for your extraordinary commitment and support of the Debutantes. Your love, support and
guidance made our jobs that much easier.
We would like to thank the members of the Program Committee for all their hard work and
dedication. Today as we congratulate and honor the 2021 Debutante Cotillion we also salute
every person who contributed time, energy, prayers, monetary gifts or all of the above to make
the year’s Cotillion process a success.

Kyla Ayanna Walker

Kyla Ayanna Walker is the beautiful, hard-working, respectful, and caring
daughter of Erica and William David Walker, III. As the eldest child, Kyla
follows the mantra, “try your best.”

Kyla is a 2021 graduate of North Plainfield High School (NPHS), where she
participated in numerous extracurricular activities. During her tenure at NPHS,
Kyla was a member of the Interact Club, Color Guard, Winter Guard, Winter
Track, Softball, and Field Hockey teams. Not only was Kyla an avid athlete,
but she also served as Captain of the varsity field hockey team and co-captain
of the varsity softball team. Kyla’s passion and leadership on the field were
instrumental in gaining school, county, conference, and regional recognition
for her NPHS field hockey team. In February 2021, Kyla was honored as the
NPHS recipient of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day Award.

When Kyla is not studying, practicing, or working at Home Goods, she is
baking, listening to music, watching movies, or assembling furniture. In the
fall, Kyla will attend Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts to pursue a
career in nursing. Participating in the NPHS Project Lead the Way -
Biomedical Science program for the last three years ignited Kyla’s desire to
become a nurse. Kyla notes, “Living through the COVID-19 pandemic has
allowed me to become aware of the racial divide in health care. As a person of
color, I would like to do what I can to help close that gap. As a nurse, I believe
that I will be able to connect with and care for all patients, but especially those
who have been historically underserved.” After completing her bachelor’s
degree, Kyla plans to pursue a Masters in Nursing degree, which she believes
may guide her toward a possible specialization and prepare her for advanced
practice.

Kyla credits her parents for instilling the importance of being service-oriented
and giving back to her community. She has been a regular volunteer of the
Community Foodbank of New Jersey and believes being service-oriented is a
crucial component in nursing.
