In this issue of
Few things in life ever get cheaper and, unless you’re very lucky, savings and wages never seem to catch up. That
seems especially true of motorhomes in 2022. I’ve seen popular models that have risen by £10k, or even £12k, in the
last six to nine months. Whether Brexit, Covid or supply issues are to blame, it means that even quite modest entry-
level models are now knocking on the door of £60k – often more by the time you’ve added essentials like an awning,
alarm and bike rack. The trend doesn’t seem to be slowing – and is hardly likely to go into reverse – so budget models,
like the ones we’re focusing on this month, are sure to take a bigger slice of sales.
Alternatively, would you be prepared to go back to basics with something like VW’s
new Caddy California? It might not be much more than a car with a bed and a cooker but
it could start younger buyers off on the campervan lifestyle and probably won’t cost much
more on a monthly PCP than a VW estate car. We’ll watch with interest to see how it fares.
Or, of course, you could buy a pre-owned ’van. If you look carefully, there are still some
great deals out there at a fraction of the cost of buying new. On page 51 we highlight used
vehicles from as little as £12,995!

Based in Grimsby, and part of the
French-owned Trigano Group, Auto-
Trail built its first motorhome in 1982.
Many of its early vehicles were based
on Mercedes-Benz chassis, but other
base vehicles followed, including VWs,
Talbots, Peugeots, Fords and Fiats,
although the company has tended to
focus on the luxury end of the coachbuilt
motorhome market.
Today, Auto-Trail offers everything from
a 5.4m campervan to a tag-axle A-class.
Its van conversions include pop-top
models and it also builds campervans
for other Trigano Group brands.
The current Auto-Trail coachbuilt range
encompasses the Expedition, F-Line (on
Ford), Imala, Tracker, Frontier and the
Grande Frontier A-class.

WHO IS CHAUSSON?
Chausson motorhomes are built by

Chausson vehicles have been available

WHO IS COMPASS?
Originally an independent maker of
motorhomes (often on Mercedes

swallowed up by the Explorer Group and
production moved to the Elddis factory in
Consett, where badge-engineered Elddis

The brand returned to the motorhome

mirrored the Elddis Autoquest line-up. In
