SIMPLEST STEP TOWARDS BETTER SKIN

THE GOOD NEWS is that your body naturally gets

less-than-good news is that it sometimes needs
a helping hand. When dead cells linger, they can
make your skin appear dull and dry. They can also
build up in your pores, leading to breakouts. To

We all need to shatter
the myth that men’s
insecurity is taboo.
Male body image is an under-reported and overlooked
subject. A deleterious combination of cultural influences,
competitive instincts and a conspiracy of silence can often
mean that the pressure to look good or perform better is
keenly felt, yet rarely discussed. Our experiences may vary,
but few of us are immune to harm. It’s time to self-reflect

did, however, think about how doing so might make
me more attractive to girls.
If you were to ask me where my interest in
working out came from, that’s probably how I’d
answer. But if I really think about it, my obsession with
body image was born much earlier. A child of the 1980s,
I grew up watching He-Man cartoons and reading
superhero comics, which inspired in me an admiration for
physiques that couldn’t exist in real life. When I was old
enough, my dad would let me stay up to watch Arnie films,
which presented me with physiques that could exist in real
life thanks only to pharmaceutical assistance.
An ex-soldier turned mechanic, my dad was into
motorbikes and tattoos, not working out. He wasn’t a big
guy, but he wouldn’t back down from one either. He worked
with his hands and settled arguments with his fists. He
was not like other dads, nor I like him. He took me to my
football matches and instructed me to take the man (or the
eight-year-old boy in this case) instead of the ball. To be
hard. Nearly three decades later, I’m still trying. Or maybe
it would be more accurate to say compensating.
The question of male body image is multi-layered,
sometimes paradoxical. It’s a superficial subject that
goes to the core of who we are, who we want to be, who
we wish we weren’t. We externally manifest values that,
somewhere along the line, we’ve internalised.
Some aspirational figures loom large, from films, TV
and, yes, magazines: nearly 60 per cent of respondents to
Men’s Health’s anonymous survey professed a desire to be
“lean and athletic”. But there is no one ideal male body.
Some men value aesthetics and some performance, some
size and some slenderness. And there is no one answer to
the question of where those ideals come from, even though
nearly 87 per cent agreed – 38 per cent strongly – that
social media has put men under pressure to maintain
a ‘perfect’ physique. Whatever that is.
In the eight years I’ve written for Men’s Health, this
is the hardest thing I’ve ever worked on. Hearing and
reading the stories, I felt mixed emotions. Sympathy for
what they’ve been through. Regret for what I have. Relief
that I’m not a 16-year-old boy in the age of social media.
That said, discussion of body image doesn’t have to be
overwhelmingly negative. It can be positive, regardless of
your shape and size. Like the case studies here, my body
image has, at points, contributed to personal satisfaction
and professional success. It has also, at points, made me
unhappy. The relationship status is: it’s complicated. The
line between inspiration and compulsion is a fine one. But
social media is not inherently evil. Nor are magazines.
They can use their influence for good. And a body of
science speaks to the physical and mental health benefits
of exercise and eating well.
You don’t have to change. What does is the statistic
that 33 per cent of you rarely talk about your issues with
poor body image or low self-esteem; 44 per cent never.
Let’s join the conversation.

I MUST’VE BEEN about eight. Someone – it
could’ve been a distant male relation – flexed
his biceps and motioned, “This is what you
can get one day, if you want it”.
My dad wasn’t always around, but I
gathered by the size of him that he must’ve
gone to the gym. We have a Jamaican
background and we always talked about being
strong, eating good, solid food.
As a child, I remember playing the Disney
Hercules computer game and being gripped
by all the things he could do. It just struck a
chord with me: maybe one day I could be
super-strong and admired by many people.
At high school, it was always about having
a six-pack in the changing rooms. I started
doing push-ups every day. I seemed to get
quite a few eyes. So that was good for the
ego, I guess.
When I was 17, I got my first job in the
stock room of a department store. I was
determined to build muscle. I trained at a gym
across the road five days a week and brought
in two tins of tuna and four slices of buttered
bread every day for lunch. I managed to see
changes, which was great.
I found a job as a PT at the back end of a
period of depression. A lot of things came into
play: family life, bereavements. At the time, I
wasn’t that interested in getting clients. I just
wanted to feel better. I knew that, if I could
exercise consistently, I’d see massive
changes. I wouldn’t feel so much of a failure.
I’m very results-orientated. The standard
of my physique is always at the forefront of my
mind. I’m known in the industry for my muscle
density, so I feel pressure to maintain that.
I see my body as a trophy of my
accomplishments. I’m in the process of
prepping for a [bodybuilding] qualifier which,
if I win, will take me to America. I remember
my coach saying that in about four years I
could win the Men’s Physique Olympia: the
top, top show in the world. If he’s said it to me,
I believe I can do it.

It’s said that comparison is the thief of joy.
All my life, I’ve compared myself with others, from

I switched to strongman because I wanted to

As soon as Harris founded the East Coast chapter in 2016, he

he says. But he pushed through, aided by DM support and donations,
and the group evolved. While the name may include the word Black,
Harris invited kids of all colours from the neighbourhood. And what
started as a few surfing meet-ups grew into an organisation that
now supplies disadvantaged Rockaway youth with free wetsuits,
surfboards and lessons. Beyond gear and skills, Harris says, the
members gain something that blows their minds: pure joy. “A lot of
these kids don’t come from the best homes. For them, surfing is a lot
of fun. After [trying] surfing, they don’t want to leave,” he says.
Hundreds of kids have passed through the ranks, and in the
summer of 2020, the group organised a paddle-out, a take on the
Hawaiian memorial surfing tradition, for Black Lives Matter and
racial justice. The event attracted more than 400 surfers calling for
an end to police violence. And 49-year-old Harris, now retired with
knee problems, is still out there week after week. He recalls a parent
lamenting that she couldn’t get her son out of the house, and “now
he’s waking me up to come surf with you,” Harris relays.
