Interestingly, Fred Eichler, a Gaines-

ville, Florida, native, has deep ties with
Bear Archery, working under Frank Scott at
the company’s Gainesville, Florida, head-
quarters in the late 1980s. During his time
at Bear Archery, Eichler split his time be-
tween the pro shop and conducting tours
of the Fred Bear Museum, which proved a
watershed moment in Eichler’s life.

Eichler remembers cleaning Fred Bear’s
mounts, including the application of
mineral oil on the noses and claws of his
mounted animals. Those years had a huge
impact on the trajectory of Eichler’s life.
Like Fred Eichler, Fred Bear was a master
storyteller (Bear signed Eichler’s copy of
“Fred Bear’s Field Notes” in 1976), and being
around his hero’s mounted animals helped
fuel the passion that would direct Eichler
to larger things. During his time with the
company, Eichler also developed a deep
admiration for the craftsmanship of Bear
bows, particularly their traditional line.

Eichler’s exposure to “everything Fred
Bear” inspired heady dreams of someday
following in his hero’s footsteps. Chuck Ad-
ams later coined the term Super Slam after
tagging 27 North American big-game spe-
cies, forming the foundation for Eichler’s
personal goal of doing the same with tra-
ditional gear. In 2009, Eichler became the
first traditional owhunter to collect the
Super Slam of 29 North American big-game
species with recurve bow.

Eichler moved to Colorado at age 21 to
manage Arrow Dynamic, an archery pro
shop in Fort Collins, did a little damage-
control trapping, worked for Dart Interna-
tional, and then launched ulldraw utfit-

While guiding the late Bowhunter Maga-
zine editor Dwight Schuh, Schuh encour-
aged Eichler to do some writing, leading to
the pu lication of his first articles a out
years ago in Traditional Bowhunter. Eichler
has penned hundreds of articles since, his
name still on the masthead of Western

publication’s Traditional Editor.
