Inside Archery’s signature cover stories are always packed with interest-
ing insights and effective business philosophies from the top brands in
the archery industry. We receive the opportunity to have in-depth con-
versations with many of the industry’s top minds, and we get to hear in
their own words exactly how they managed to achieve their incredible
accomplishments. That’s what this magazine is all about: sharing stories
of success and learning from them.
And that’s also why we take some time at the beginning of each year to
look back at last year’s stories and reflect on what we’ve learned together. Like
every year, we spoke with an interesting collection of some of the industry’s
sharpest minds. We learned about what drives and inspires them. We saw the
new products they created to improve the archery experience, and we discov-
ered powerful approaches to business that can make any organization more
successful.
Family & Tradition
One of the most common sentiments you hear from members in the archery
industry is about the heavy significance of family and tradition. For many, our
love for archery began in childhood and turned into a lifelong pursuit.
“My father was a self-taught bowhunter, and he was also a big Mathews fan,”
said Mark Hayes, design engineering manager for Mathews. “I’ll never forget the
time he got his Mathews Switchback. I was about 15 at the time, and I ended up
getting a Switchback, too. That same year I took my first physics class and some-
thing clicked. My dad and I were shooting in the backyard one day. I told him I
was going to be an engineer and that I was going to work for Mathews. My dad
was wise enough not to squash my dreams, and he actually helped me get here.
I started writing Mathews letters, and I kept writing letters throughout college.
Apparently I pestered them enough because they eventually offered me an intern-
ship, and then a full-time position. So I’ve been here for my whole career, and I was
definitely brought here by passion—just like everyone else.”
Influence from parents and grandparents commonly plays a major role for to-
day’s archery innovators.
“I certainly followed in my grandfather’s footsteps in terms of my love for ar-
chery,” said Nick Fisher, president of AAE. “He started training me when I was young,
and I’ve shot ever since. Just like him, that love inspires me to create products that
will make a true improvement to the end-user’s experience. I am definitely a bow-
tuning fanatic. I love going through the entire process, trying to achieve the perfect
setup, and naturally I always run into little issues that could be prevented.”
Many industry leaders end up returning to their home state after living elsewhere,
bringing their hunting journey full circle.
“Scent Crusher’s headquarters is actually about 45 minutes away from the small
town where I grew up and fell in love with hunting,” said Dan Drake, founder and
CEO of Scent Crusher. “Earlier on, I did a lot of bird hunting, but eventually I picked
up a bow and started hunting with that. Like everyone, I just fell in love with it, and
it’s been incredible to have the opportunity to go full circle and combine business with
70
what I love. It makes work fun, and the
relationships we’ve made in this industry
are truly special. Everyone doesn’t get to
live their passion the way we do, and we
see it as a real blessing.”
Other industry leaders stuck around
their home turf and built their business
from there.
“Today I’m still involved in farming
and ranching with the family operation,”
said Daryn Yoder, owner and founder of
Fore Runner Blinds. “My grandparents
moved here from Oklahoma in 1965,
and my parents bought the home farm
from them in 1989. We have continued
to add to the property and grow it, and
we also manage nearby properties for
some of our neighbors. The ‘cowboy
lifestyle’ has been a lifetime commit-
ment, but I’ve really just been focusing
on my family and growing our opera-
tion. I’ve got three kids, and I’m a firm
believer in the American Dream. I
want to set them up with something
better than what I was set up with.
My parents had that goal, too, and so
did my grandparents.”
A family hunting tradition natu-
rally leads passionate individuals
to discover highly effective brands,
and sometimes those brands are in
need of a new owner.
“Like so many people, I got in-
troduced to hunting because my
dad was a hunter,” said Joel Har-
ter, CEO of Summit Outdoors and
Shadow Hunter Blinds. “I re-
member really enjoying hunting,
even though I didn’t have a lot
of success early on. That wasn’t
the point, though. I just enjoyed
being outdoors, spending time
with my family and friends, and
that just stuck with me. I kept
hunting as I got older, and I be-
came more acquainted with the
industry, and that’s how I got
introduced to Shadow Hunt-

friends, Shadow Hunter was

JANUARY 2022 INSIDEARCHERY.COM 81
Lancaster the tournament started, it was held at
the same location as the pro shop, driv-
Archery Classic ing sales during the competition. Ar-
82 chers could get the gear they needed to
compete while they were shooting.
Since the Classic has moved to larger
venues, a mobile sales trailer has been
brought in to provide gear to archers.
Essentially, the Lancaster Archery Sup-
ply Pro Shop followed the archers to the
new venues.
But aside from on-site sales, the Clas-
sic puts the name “Lancaster Archery
Supply” in front of a captive audience
of potential customers. That includes
those archers and their friends and
families at the event, plus thousands
more archery fans who watch the live-
stream of the Classic at home.
Lancaster Archery Supply broadcasts
the Classic live on its social media
channels. Extra production is put into
the shoot-up finals, which is broadcast
as a professional live sports event, with
Lancaster Archery Supply branding
prominent throughout.
Inside Archery: Not every pro shop can
host an event such as the Classic. What
can other shops take from your experi-
ence with the Classic?
Lancaster Archery: The Classic is a one-
of-a-kind event. But other shops can
emulate it by creating their own events
geared toward expanding their respec-
tive clienteles. The leadership at Lan-
caster Archery Supply learned early on
that tournament archers were a strong,
core customer group. For another shop,
maybe bowhunters are at the core of
their customer base.
Find and create an event that draws
such customers to your shop. Talk to
them and cater it to appeal to them.
As the years go by, they will spread the
word about their event to their friends,
and your event should grow.
Build on the success of each year to
make the following year’s event big-
ger and better. Use social media to build
hype before, during and after your event.
Event attendees are not likely to be one-
time customers, but rather a reliable
foundation of your customer base. IA
