This has certainly been an unconventional ending to a school year. The COVID-19 global pandemic caused our
campus to be closed from 18 March. Although our campus was closed, school remained very much open until
the end of the school year. I am grateful that our students and faculty were prepared to transition quickly to our
Distance Learning program. This created a steep learning curve for us all but, from an educational perspective, it
also stretched us in new and productive ways. Pandemic or not, remote working will be an important part of our
future. Perhaps one day soon we will be grateful for having had this opportunity to hone our abilities to
communicate, connect, and collaborate across great distances.
We must not let the campus closure and our move to distance learning define the entire school year.
The entire 2019-20 school year was marked by great successes for AISL. In the classroom and at home, our
students stretched their minds and developed their skills across the curriculum. The PYP Exhibition, MYP
Personal Project, and DP Extended Essays provided culminating activities where students could demonstrate
what they have learned over the years. Under the guidance of our highly-trained and qualified faculty, our
students learned important new knowledge and, more importantly, developed critical skills in research, analysis,
self-discipline, ethical behavior, and communication that transcend individual classes and will provide a
foundation for success for years to come.
Beyond the classroom, our students were engaged on the sports field, on the courts, on the stage, and in the
community. Explore Zambia trips, international trips like ISSEA and MUN, dozens of sports tournaments and
fixtures, more than twenty service activities, two plays, multiple musical performances and several artistic
exhibitions were only some of the opportunities for our students to show off their talents. Their inspirational
achievements clearly demonstrate the importance of AISL’s holistic approach to education as illustrated in our
Portrait of an AISL Learner.
I sincerely hope that you have enjoyed your whole year at AISL. If you are leaving us, I wish you the very best of
luck on your next adventure. If you are staying, I look forward to working with you again next year.
Either way, always remember that once a Leopard, always a Leopard!

Darlene Huson
Throughout the 2019-2020 academic year, community and resilience continued to emerge as attributes
that drove this year forward for students, teachers, and families. From opening the school year with
a campus in transition due to the renovation project to closing the school year via distance learning,
this year has continued to demonstrate how our community has pulled together to overcome planned
and unforeseen challenges. Despite these obstacles along the way, we have continued to connect,
grow and transform as a community of learners. As Claude Bernard reminds us, “Man can learn noth-
ing except by going from known to the unknown”, which is exactly what we did over the course of this
year. This yearbook celebrates the learning, innovative thinking, and moments that have made this
year special. As we provide each child with individual support and encouragement, we see each one as
extremely capable in his/her own unique way. Our goal is to guide each of our students socially, emo-
tionally, and academically as part of our holistic program.
As a PYP school, we have questioned and reflected as inquirers, thinkers, and risk-takers. We have
made principled choices and cared for one another. Our actions as teachers and parents have mirrored
advice by Og Mandino, “Take the attitude of a student, never be too big to ask questions, never know
too much to learn something new.” Our students have raised awareness about issues that impact our
school, our local community, and our world. From our youngest to oldest learners, each child has re-
flected on how to take meaningful action in hopes of creating a better future. As the Primary Principal,
I can find so many reasons to be proud of what our students and teachers have accomplished this year.
Whether you are a family who will be returning to AISL next year or a family moving on to a new
destination, know that it has been a pleasure working together this year. I hope this yearbook will be a
wonderful memoir for you and your child.
Sincerely,
Darlene Huson
