1 COMPUTERS

A computer is an electronic machine capable of
performing different calculations and tasks. A
computer is a multi-tasking device capable of
following your commands. You can use a computer
to complete your homework, write a document,
listen to music, watch a movie, or play games. You
can store your documents, pictures, or even videos
on a computer. Nowadays every office, institute, and business uses computers to
do their work faster and more easily.

A computer is up of two main parts: hardware and software.

Hardware is the physical parts of the computer that
you can touch with your hands. For example, a keyboard
or a mouse.

Software is the program that
helps you to operate computers
and perform different tasks. You cannot touch the
software because the software is not a physical part of
the computer. Let’s consider the example of your
thoughts. Can you touch your thoughts? No, but thoughts
are there controlling your actions. The game you play is also software.

Let’s discuss what is an operating system.

1.1 Operating System

A program or set of programs that controls the
processing of the user's applications and controls the

operation of a computer. Consider
the operating system as an
interface between the computer
hardware and a user. The operating
system manages all the hardware and software applications
for the computer. The most commonly
used operating systems are Windows by
Microsoft, macOS by Apple Inc., and Linux by Linus Torvalds.

Let us discuss some uses of an operating system.

• Controls the hardware such as scanners and printers.
• Organize the use of memory between programs.
• Provide an interface for the user to operate a computer.
• Maintains the security of the computer.
• Deals with user instructions.

1.2 Basic Computer Hardware

Let’s discuss the minimum hardware requirement to operate a
computer. You need four hardware devices to use a computer.

1. A desktop (Fig 1.1),
2. A monitor (Fig 1.2),
3. A keyboard (Fig 1.3),
4. A mouse.
