The Evolution of the Pines Party
by Ed Schulhafer
Pines Party has always been magical to me. It is the evolution of a few parties conceived and created in Fire
Island Pines by residents with the sole intention of gathering community to celebrate, raise awareness and
provide funding for terrific causes.
In 1979, Pines Resident Scott Bromley discovered that the local Fire Island Pines Volunteer Fire Department
needed a new fire truck. Scott along with his designer and marketing house wizards, Ron Martin, Robin
Jacobsen, Fern Mallis, and Michael Schaible, pitched an idea to the Fire Department to create a fundraising
event to be held on the 4th of July weekend called BEACH. They said, YES! BEACH was inspired by all of
the themed house parties that had occurred in the Pines and Cherry Grove since the 1920’s. The BEACH
extravaganza featured “dancing” on the beach, a silent auction, casino, and raffle featuring top disco acts of
the day with Donna Summer advertised as the Headliner. Everything was in motion until the Disco Queen,
DIVA Donna, had to cancel and was replaced by an undiscovered France Joli who debuted the disco anthem
“Come to Me.” This feat was quite innovative in 1979. The night was perfect. The tide was high. The moon was
full. The glamorous event attracted the Studio 54 celebrities and tastemakers of the day. The party was a huge
success and it was covered by the New York Times, Architectural Digest and the international press, which
raised the profile of Fire Island Pines. The best news about BEACH was, it was a time that brought all genders
and sexualities of the Fire Island Pines community together. No longer did we refer to each other as an US or
THEM but all of us became a WE.
A few years later an unknown virus devastated our community. There was no money or government support
as gay men began dying at an alarming rate. We had no choice but to fight back as our friends died from a
disease called AIDS. Alone, without funding, it became a desperate time. One of the ways in which we raised
awareness and fought back was through a newly formed organization called Gay Men’s Health Crisis. It was
spearheaded by members of the Fire Island Pines Community who had attended the party, BEACH. To raise
seed money, they threw a party at a private oceanfront home. The demand and outreach for support of the
party grew very quickly out of necessity. So the organizers had to rethink the party. Following the successful
fundraising formula of the party, BEACH, they created what became known as the GMHC Morning Parties. This
formula to raise awareness and money would be recreated both nationally and internationally, which eventually
evolved into “circuit parties.” But for those in the Pines, these events were really personal. It became a matter of
life or death and it gave us an opportunity to dance and honor our friends that died.
The Morning Party had a very successful run for 16 years. It brought about awareness and the much needed
funding to help with the AIDS Crisis. Unfortunately, it ended after 16 years over perceived conflicts of interest
due to alcohol and recreational drug abuse. The bad publicity that ensued was too difficult to recover from.
So, the Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association picked up the ball and produced the event inspired by
BEACH and created an all night beach party. The event was renamed Pines Party. This year marks the 20th
Anniversary. For 20 years, we have been able to come together as a community, raise awareness for LGBTQ
issues, contribute financially to political and environmental causes, in addition to establishing civil rights for the
LGBTQ community at large.
We have introduced a new energy into the Pines which fosters love and a sense of community. Here, we have
built special bonds of friendship while dancing for and with our brothers and sisters, under the stars, on the Fire
Island Pines Beach. There is yet more to come. So enjoy the night and let’s continue to support those in need.

Justice is, in part, about time. The struggle for progress calls us to reset society to value intrinsic rights,
all while working to accelerate toward a future we deserve. In that, we prioritize endurance, how long
the changes we make will last.
Justice is also a matter of space—a constant examination of where we began, how far we have come,
and our ability to locate ourselves. Despite painful setbacks and ever-growing challenges, we know that
what is now is not forever. We know where we are, where we have been, and where we can go.
Consider what Stonewall was funding two decades back. In 1998, highlights of our grantmaking
included transitional housing for homeless youth at the Hetrick-Martin Institute; GLSEN’s efforts to
develop LGBTQ students as leaders in activism; and authentic ‘for us, by us’ LGBTQ storytelling
through the MIX Film Festival. And now? HMI stands tall alongside Stonewall grantee partners Ali
Forney, Trinity Place, and New Alternatives. With the backing of groups like GLSEN, the ACLU, and
GSA Network, Gavin Grimm and a host of brave students are taking the fight for equal treatment all the
way to the Supreme Court, and winning. We live in the age of an Emmy-nominated Laverne Cox; on
an ordinary Sunday, you can tune in to a mainstream cable network and watch Pose, where beautiful,
complicated narratives are being scripted, directed, and performed by black trans women from New
York City.
Time and space. This is how we measure Movement.
Our partnership with the Pines Party has moved more than one million dollars into and across the
LGBTQ community. Sixty days of dancing. Over a thousand days of planning. Twenty years of
investing in justice, in dynamic, deliberate efforts to create lasting progress, regain ground, and engender
new possibilities. Time and Space. At some point this weekend, I hope you pause, still yourself, and
appreciate the Movement around you.
See you on the sand.
Yours,
Jarrett Lucas

Dear Friends:
It is a great pleasure to join with the Pines Foundation to welcome everyone to the annual
Pines Party in Fire Island Pines.
New York’s diverse and dynamic LGBTQ community has long been instrumental in
fueling social progress and fighting for greater equality, and for generations, these individuals
have boldly stood up to fuel progress and build a better and brighter future. Now in its 20th year,
the Pines Party has long provided attendees with opportunities to celebrate the many ways that
Fire Island Pines has served as a safe haven for LGBTQ individuals and a cherished place that
champions inclusivity and acceptance. This annual event also supports the ongoing outreach and
important missions of the Pines Foundation and Stonewall Community Foundation, and I am
proud to join in commemorating its 20 years of bringing LGBTQ people together in the spirit of
celebration and pride. Together, we renew our shared commitment to building a stronger
foundation for the LGBTQ community in New York and far beyond.
On behalf of the City of New York, I offer my best wishes for an enjoyable and exciting
weekend.
Sincerely,
Bill de Blasio
Mayor

Dear Friends,
Please accept my warmest regards as you celebrate the 20th Annual Pines Party weekend
in Fire Island Pines.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the long history of charitable
fundraising that this event has undertaken on Fire Island. Since 1998, Pines Party has
contributed over $1.2 million to the Stonewall Community Foundation. This money has
provided vital funding to the LGBTQ community of New York. I am honored to support
and congratulate The Pines Foundation for its long tradition of community service.
The Fire Island Pines community has been at the forefront of the LGBTQ fight for equal
rights for more than 30 years. The predecessor to the Pines Party was the GMHC
Morning Party, which represented a 15-year tradition of providing crucial funding for the
fight against HIV/AIDS.
The progress to equality is real. Of course, more remains to be done, and I stay
committed to fighting for equal rights on the local level on behalf of the LGBTQ
community.
Lastly, I commend The Pines Foundation for funding programs that enhance and preserve
the fragile coastal environment as well as improve the infrastructure of the Pines. I hope
that The Pines Foundation becomes an inspiration to other communities on Fire Island
and greater Brookhaven in continuing this tradition of service. My best wishes for a
beautiful event.
Sincerely,
Neil J. Foley
