MILAGRO MEANS MIRACLE

This is my favorite time of the summer. Pines Party is like Christmas in July. This is the 19th annual Pines
Party. Our coming together on the beach at night to party is a most magical event. It unites the
community, both those who work so hard putting it on and those attending. It is a night to gather with
your friends and neighbors, dance on the beach at night with your honey and see the show that the sky
puts on at night.

Recent parties that I recall fondly are TV2001 where everyone dressed up like their favorite TV star; I DO
where everyone seemed to dress up as brides; and Emerald City where there were endless munchkins
and poppies walking past my tent.

Over the years the Pines Party has made a return to the benefitting foundations, now exceeding $2
million. Proceeds have helped fund numerous projects throughout the community including funding the
plantings in our new harbor. New York City charities benefitting in recent years have included the
Center for Anti-Violence Education and New Alternatives for LGBT Homeless Youth.

We can take enormous pride that we put on a party that has no peer. None. It is unique. No other
community builds an encampment on the edge of the ocean for an all-night extravaganza. It gives all
who attend a wonderful feeling of community and attracts many visitors who are attracted by the party
but stay a little longer to realize what is so special about the Pines and become long-time residents. All
of us thank the committee, the staff and the many volunteers who make it all possible.

Have a wonderful 19th Pines Party!

Jay Pagano, President

Welcome to Pines Party: Labyrinth 2017!
We are honored that you have joined us for this magical celebration on the heavenly, pristine
Fire Island Pines Beach. You have arrived at Labyrinth.
For over a hundred years, the Labyrinth of Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove have pioneered
progress. They’ve also provided safe spaces, ferries and boardwalks for gathering community,
fighting civil rights, weathering storms, inspiring philanthropy, but more importantly, igniting love.
This is no “alternative fact.”
The current affairs of the day have challenged our humanity, freedom and progress, leaving
many LGBTQ friends and family disenchanted. The time is now. Be ready to stand your ground.
Move beyond your fears and challenge the status quo. Uphold the legacy you’ve been gifted.
As you enter Labyrinth, allow the moon and galaxy to illuminate your path. Become one with
a diverse community that will inspire your dreams, support your love, protect your rights and
warm your hearts. The Labyrinth will bring you ultimate harmony and peace, all in a maze, on a
sandcastle of love.
Wishing each of you a beautiful night!
Enjoy,

Allan Baum and Ed Schulhafer

In times of social and political urgency, it can feel like there is not enough. Not
enough donors, doers, dollars, or doors opening to a better future. It is easy
to give up hope and turn inward, forgetting the power of interdependence. But,
Stonewall Community Foundation is here to fuel the LGBTQ Movement, keep us
connected to one another, and mobilize the resources our community needs to
thrive.
I am so proud that this work is not only a product of concern and compassion,
which are important, but also of joy and generosity. As an organization, it is our
mission to make sure money makes a difference. But through our longstanding
partnership with the Pines Party, we get to make sure that the journey to making
that money has a soundtrack, dancing, and incredible costumes. What are we
about if not embracing the most colorful, candid, and adventurous parts of our
being? This weekend is at once a celebration of fantasy and authenticity—and
all for the cause. Over a million dollars of Party proceeds have been channeled
through Stonewall as grants into the NYC LGBTQ community, touching the
fullness of our diverse ranks, from homeless youth and people impacted by HIV, to
survivors of violence and asylum seekers. To us, that is simply amazing.
With funds raised this year, we look forward to deepening our investment in the
places and populations that need it most. And as we are in the middle of three
grant cycles, I can say the need is great. However, because of you, so is the impact
we stand to have.
Gratitude to the FIPPOA Board and membership, to the 2017 organizers and
sponsors, and to each person who shows up, gets lost in the music, and helps make
Labyrinth the best Pines Party yet.
Sincerely,

Jarrett Lucas

Dear Friends:

It is a great pleasure to join with the Pines Foundation to welcome everyone to the annual
Pines Party in Fire Island Pines.

New York proudly stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ community in our city and far
beyond, and my administration is deeply committed to ensuring that these individuals can live
with the dignity and respect they deserve. For 19 years, the Pines Party has brought people
together to celebrate the diversity and enduring strength of this community, and by supporting
the Pines Foundation and Stonewall Community Foundation, it is helping to make a positive
impact on the lives of many. I am proud to applaud all of the Pines Party’s hosts and attendees
for ensuring Fire Island Pines will continue to be an inclusive and welcoming place for all to
enjoy for many years to come. Together, we will continue to work towards a brighter and more
equitable tomorrow.

On behalf of the City of New York, I offer my best wishes for a wonderful and exciting
weekend.

Sincerely,

Bill de Blasio
Mayor

I am the future of the
LGBT community.

I’m gay.

I’m 20 years old. I’m out to
my parents. I love parties,
the beach, and believe
it or not, sports. I have a
boyfriend, and we like to
laugh at dumb online videos.

But I also read the news. I
care about the planet. I’m
studying Engineering at
college. I voted in the last
election and I campaigned
for marriage equality.
Someday I might want to
have kids.

I am the future of the LGBT
community. And I read about
that future every day on my
smart phone. Because that’s
where I want it to be.
