Dear Bambi Sue,

I work at the front desk of an office full of crazy gay men who make a lot of money and pay me to run their errands and do their tedious
paper work. All they have been talking about this week is Pines Party - the themes, the different events, who is going to what party and
what they are going to wear. They are revved up beyond their normal manic banter. One of them was talking about his tent, is that code for
something?

I have been to Fire Island a few times to help my boss clean his house early in the season. I know it is a fun and frisky place for gay men. I am
curious to know how this Pines Party got started? Why do they have it? I assume it is a benefit for something? I would love to see what it is
all about, but I hear it is expensive. Lastly, I am wondering how the theme relates to the event?

So Bambi can you give me some history about this event and its purpose, so that one day when I can afford a ticket I will understand how
this came to be?

Our History Matters

Dear Classically Curious,

Honey, what kind of animals do you work for who let you clean their house and then don’t have you back for the high season? The Pines
Party is for everyone, and if you want the experience first hand you can volunteer and get a discounted ticket. Now all you have to do is see
if your boss will let you crash in his garden shed.

I am no history teacher, but here is what I know about the roots of the event. First, lets go back to 1979 when the Pines needed a new
fire truck and staged an all night dance on the beach called Beach 79. France Joli made her debut performance at 16 and went on to
international stardom. The design of the Party, which was by Scott Bromley, made the cover of Architectural Digest, and the benefit, all-night
dance party on the beach was born.

During the 1980’s at the beginning of the AIDS crisis and the zenith of the NY Disco scene, it was traditional for the stragglers on the
Pavilion dance floor to ascend on someone’s oceanfront deck for a morning of mellow dance music. At the time, GMHC was forming to
address the crisis and someone decided to make their Morning Party an official fund raiser for the fledgling organization. Each year the party
grew in size, production values and fundraising results.

I have a vivid memory of one Morning Party at Ozone and Ocean during the Reagan era when “Just Say No To Drugs” was a First Lady buzz
line emblazoned on our grocery tote bags. When the party got rained out and was eventually moved to the Pavilion, my housemates (trying
to put together some rainproof outfits for the walk downtown) cut the bottom off the bags and made excellent muscle tee’s with Just Say
No across the chest ….. ironic, yet stylish.

Then the Morning Party progressed to the beach with an army of volunteers building a daytime dance floor on the sand to accommodate
2500 revelers.About 16 years later, after a few drug overdoses and bad press, GMHC stopped sponsoring the party.
FIPPOA saw a void in the summer calendar and an opportunity and to create a charitable, pinnacle event every season. Money is raised for
the community, as well as Stonewall Community Foundation that helps LBGTQ organizations grow. Give a party and give back.

Pines Party is the most magical weekend of the summer!

Pines Party calls on the collaborative effort of the entire community - volunteers, vendors and local business all chip in and it is the place
to be for the entire population of our little sandbar town. It attracts the larger LGBTQ community as well, drawing in a large population
of visitors from around the globe. For one weekend the Pines is an international gay mecca and all that come are welcome to revel in this
special event.

The tents set up at the party are for the high rollers to have a private entertaining space to share with their friends and neighbors and create
a midway to encourage socializing. The secondary events are all designed to create a weekend long, world-class experience. Pines Party
weekend is our community high holy day, when the town celebrates its own and encourages newcomers to engage with the old guard.

This year’s themes are particularly perfect. The kick-off NIGHTFALL, given that our town is legendary for its nightlife, nightfall is always
welcome in the Pines. ELIXIR, given that every night assembling at low, high or middle tea is the social norm where the ELIXER flows freely.
LABYRINTH, the legendary Meat Rack has been to topic of myth and legend, as any real Pines Queen has clocked many hours exploring
the winding paths, dead ends, woods and swamps in search of magical meetings. FIRST LIGHT morning party, dancing till dawn is also a time
honored tradition. How often I have gone out at midnight with the expectation of going only for an hour and as dawn breaks I am slowly
crawling towards home, muttering to myself, I did it again- no regrets! ICARUS the mythical god was escaping imprisonment, as we have
struggled for equal rights, and then he flew too close to the sun, can you say SPF 50?

So my curious friend, now you know, get your volunteer ticket and jump into the legend.

Bambi Sue

Fire Island Pines - Journal 2017

In the summer of 1990 I returned to the Pines to make pictures for my book,
OUT OF THE STUDIO. These were the first pictures I made on the island since I
had made my SX-70 Polaroids. I shot this project in 35mm B+W film shortly after
my lover, David Peterson, died of AIDS in 1988. I intended the book as a memorial
to friends lost to AIDS in those dark and desperate early days of the plague.

I gathered friends still standing to realize an alternative vision - us alive,
playing and loving. I meant the book as an antidote to the relentless death and
disintegration in our lives at that moment. David and I began our romance in
the Pines before moving to LA together in 1983. My return to the Pines was a

sentimental journey, fitting for creating the
final chapter of OUT OF THE STUDIO.

I’d known Mike Matenzi in New York and
the Pines for over a decade. His chiseled
beauty had always arrested me. I was
delighted to reconnect with him on my
return to the beach. Mike had his little
Papillon, Nicholas, in tow for the day.
Together, they said something wonderful
about us queer men. I saw Mike as a
perfect physical expression of a “clean cut”
guy type - a Marine perhaps. His fluffy dog
gave him queer charm.

As we walked down the beach, I took a
number of pictures exploring the yin / yang
energy of Mike and Nicholas. When we
came upon the buoy flagpole washed up in
the surf, I seized its potential as a prop. I
saw Mike as a hero and called the image,
“Iwo Jima with Fluff Dog,” a deconstruction of the famous memorial.

Looking back, I see this picture as a perfect expression of who we were, what we
were up to, and what we wanted to say. Whistling in the dark, we had no idea of
our own proximity to the abyss. This image is about the strength, wit and bravery
of our queer community. We had hope. We were here. Mike’s spirit lives on for us
- expressing brave hope.

LABYRINTH DJ PROFILES

RALPHI ROSARIO: DJ Producer and House Music Legend

Ralphi Rosario still spins for massive crowds at live shows
in countries around the world including Germany, Italy,
Switzerland, Spain, Brazil, Portugal, and Canada. Ralphi
established his DJ residencies early on through his dynamic
passion and talent for house music leading to his work in top
club venues including Chicago’s own Hydrate, the legendary
Vortex/Fusion Nightclub and downtown Chicago’s legendary
Shelter Nightclub.

TOM STEPHAN: Tom Stephan is an artist who truly

marches to his own drum. The US-born UK-based DJ has been
in demand internationally for well over a decade. Tom has
headlined the world’s most highly regarded parties and clubs
from the Black Party in New York to the White Party in Palm
Springs, from Space Ibiza to Stereo Montreal to Ageha Tokyo,
while holding down residencies at Beyond London, Matinee
Barcelona, WE Party Madrid, Muccassasina Rome, Beef Tel
Aviv, Karmabeat Mexico City and most recently Alegria NYC.

DJ ABEL: His production and remixing team, Rosabel,

continues to churn out #1 Billboard dance hits including their
Grammy Award Nominated remix of Rihanna’s “Only Girl in
the World”, ”Wepa” by Gloria Estefan “Papi” by Jennifer Lopez,
Madonna’s “Bitch I’m Maddonna with Nicki Menage, and the
insanely huge anthem “Chacha Heels” by Rosabel featuring
Jeanie Tracy. The team has also worked with the likes of
Donna Summer, Janet Jackson, and who could forget their
remix of Cher’s “Different Kind of Love” and so many others.

BRIAN NORWOOD: DJ Brian Norwood has the

remarkable talent of being able to watch and sense crowds.
He uses this gift to push club goers and revelers to the point
of euphoria through music. No one can change the dynamic
of a room like Brian. Since the early 1990s when he moved to
Philadelphia, Brian has used his genius for mixing music to take
club-goers on journeys; these ventures into the mellifluous
and deep unknown have made him a nationally recognized
DJ who has spun at some of the nation’s most famous venues
from coast to coast. Brian’s progressive and eclectic style is
boundless.

Gauthreaux + Grind: Joe Gauthreaux and DJ GRIND, two

of the biggest DJs and producers on the circuit, are joining
forces for a special series of events in Summer 2017 that will
showcase their big room vocal anthems, uplifting sounds, and
chart-topping productions.
Separately, Joe Gauthreaux and DJ GRIND have headlined
many of the largest and most high-profile dance festivals in
the world, and they’ve worked with some of the biggest names
in dance & pop music, including Ariana Grande, Adele, Kylie
Minogue, Cher, Justin Bieber, Ne-Yo and Demi Lovato, among
others. Between them, they have amassed 5 Billboard Top
5 Dance / Club singles, including DJ GRIND’s recent #2 hit
record with Toy Armada & Brian Justin Crum, “Show Me Love”
(Gauthreaux served on remix duties.) They also produce two
of the most popular dance music podcasts, with more than
100,000 downloads per month combined.

Aaron Aanenson: Aaron’s love affair with house music

began at an early age in the 90s after being Introduced to
electronic dance music by the local radio station and greater
gay community in Scottsdale, AZ. At 18 Aaron moved to New
York City to pursue his dreams and further realize a future in
electronic music. His first nightlife experience was with what
became his greatest inspiration, Peter Rauhofer, in 2006 at the
WORK! party.

Jeff Hall: I am thrilled to be asked back for my 6th year

as the opening DJ for the Pines Party. For me, the Pines
Party, and the Friday night VIP Party in particular, have
always felt like a community block party. There’s a sense of
shared experience here in the Pines that knits the community
together in ways that not many other communities can relate
to. And that makes this event and all of the people who make
it possible something very special. I’ll be opening this year’s
VIP Party with a deep and welcoming soulful vibe and then
handing over the decks to DJ Aaron Aanenson who has
already proven himself to be a crowd favorite here in the
Pines and elsewhere. See you on the dancefloor!

July 1, 2017
Thank you, Fire Island Pines community and Pines Party guests, for supporting Lambda Legal.
Your support is needed today more than ever.
Lambda Legal is not shy about fighting those who hurt LGBT people and anyone living with HIV. And
this Administration is hurting us.
They took away the guidance for school bathrooms, which doesn’t change the law. It just tells trans
and queer kids: You’re on your own. And they are putting the most vicious anti-gay, anti-trans people in
America in charge of the federal agencies that are supposed to protect people from discrimination.
This will eventually hurt all of us. It hurts our most vulnerable first: kids in shelters and juvenile facilities,
disproportionately queer kids and youth of color, according to our brand new study.
Marriage equality is under attack. States like Arkansas, Indiana and Tennessee are saying that our victory
at the Supreme Court guarantees the right to get a marriage license but it does not mean our marriages carry
equal rights. That’s not true. We will keep fighting these cases and we will win them. And with
Justices like Neil Gorsuch on the Court, we can’t blink for a second.
It’s not all defense. This spring, we won our biggest case since marriage equality. Kim Hively was fired
from her job as a math teacher after someone saw her kiss her girlfriend goodbye in a parking lot. In
April the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, by a vote of 8-3, held that being fired because of your sexual
orientation is against the law—not new law, not different law, but the same Civil Rights Act
that protects all of us from discrimination because of race, color, religion,
sex or national origin.
We have more cases like this in the pipeline. Together, they are
game-changing.
No one else does what we do on the scale that we do it. From six offices
around the country, including our newly opened office in Washington, D.C.,
we are the experts in the field we created.
We are your lawyers and we’re here to defend you.

With gratitude,
Rachel B. Tiven

Robert and I are incredibly honored and and excited to bring you, once again, our vision of the
Pines Party. We love and cherish the unique magic of The Pines and all the magical creatures
that reside here and make it what it is. For us, it’s the Enchanted Forest, full of faeries,
Minotaurs, Pegasus (Pegasi?) nymphs, satyrs, Chimeras, caryatids, swan maidens, and ‘Men of
the Woods.’ If you think about it, you can think of someone on this island who fits EACH of
those descriptions.
So this year, we decided to follow a thematic concept that spanned the entire weekend; and
that concept was Midsummer Night’s Dream. It’s a departure from the past, drawing on a
500 year old Shakespeare play with thousands of renditions rather than a specific film / musical
title. We intentionally left it nebulous, as we understand that this is an island of extraordinary,
sophisticated and creative creatures who would know exactly what to do.
The beach party theme is Labyrinth. Most people understand that as the Bowie film from the
80s, which is certainly a viable option, but it’s really the Labyrinth in the enchanted forest
where our heroes (and heroines) get lost, then lose themselves and all inhibitions for a night.
Reality will quickly fall away as we all forget where and who and when we are, and get to invent
who we will become, or who lives inside us - ready to bound out in full costume and splendor.
The Pines Party is absolutely my magnum opus, and it’s such an honor to work with such great
minds and great friends. David Wright, our production manager, my close friend, who for 20
years has never hesitated to set me straight; Glenn Chee, our intrepid Master Carpenter who
is our rock (and our Great Wall), the tireless volunteer crew, the amazing Allan Baum, Frank
Liberto, Ed Schulhafer, Randy Wilson, and all those on the Pines Party Committee who toil
tirelessly, year round, to create this project, They are all a joy to work with, every meeting and
conference call. This is a team that could only be assembled here. A team that fully ‘gets it’.
And of course, the partner in crime, in love, and in creation, my husband Robert Montenegro,
without who absolutely nothing is possible, or even worthwhile.
There is nothing easy about creating an all-night dance party, with tents, stages, bars, lighting,
and shows, on a beach, on a sandbar, five miles of water from the nearest road, or truck, or
hardware store. The people that put this together might make it look easy and effortless, but
they put their 100% into making this happen for months leading up to the moment, and even
go beyond their limits. It’s because we all love this island, and this moment, so much.
Thank you, Fire Island. Now go get lost!

Guy Smith
