Mutien Day
Keith Jone & Aoife Battle
Thanks to the hard work of the House Captains - Jaslyn, Victoria, Manaal, Daniel and our ES House captains Arvi and Vashini - Mutien Day was a roaring success! With events put on for the whole school, each student was able to participate and have fun. Key Stage 1 had an obstacle course to complete with the chance of winning cookies for the fastest team. From year 3 to 13 students had the opportunity to sponge their teachers. This event was hugely popular with lots of staff volunteering and many more students willing to pay!
As Mutiens' mascot is a Turtle, the House Captains thought it was only right to raise money for The Juara Turtle Project. Thanks to the success of the day, RM1757.90 will be sent to save the Turtles!

Benilde Day

The Benilde House day was a fun project to plan and be involved in, especially because it brought our house leaders from different phases of the school together and allowed them to be creative with their planning. Allison did an excellent job leading the group by delegating the tasks and giving them deadlines to meet, so they could plan the best day possible for all our students.
The Elementary students (Nathaniel and Aalya) took charge of the presentation and educated our school community about Saint Benilde.

Franco focused on creating the poster, which had all the relevant information, as well as Shun Yu and Isabelle designing the gratitude letters for our students to give to the teachers. Allison was so desperate to get water balloons involved, so she came up with the idea of an activity that involved water guns and balloons. I mean, who does not want to see a teacher get soaked!
Planning a day like this helped the students develop their teamwork, leadership and communication skills and with their hard work ethic, they were able to put on a very successful day for our students to enjoy Benilde day.

Our first aim for Jaime day was to come up with ideas where we could give something back to the school community. We were leaping into the dark though as we were the first to try this.To mark this joyous occassion, all of our Jaime students wore their house colours and all non Jaime students and teachers were able to wear an item of red; it could be a red tie, mask, shirt or even a single sock. The children certainly had a lot of fun with this dress up and we saw lots of red pops of colour everywhere.

Students from Jaime house led the community in activities centered around Service, Sport and Knowledge. One student in Year 3 said, “My favourite thing about Jaime day was that I get to dress in my favourite colour RED and I get to buy yummy treats too!”
Another student in Year 4 said, “I loved doing the tug of war the best because we all had a lot of fun!” Thank you so much to everyone involved, it was certainly a wonderful way to start off our Saints Days!

On Friday 20th May, we celebrated our final Saints Day of the year with our Miguel students being honoured this time. The House Captains from Elementary and High School held planning meetings together and wanted to focus on something a little bit different from previous Saints Days to make Miguel Day unique. They worked diligently to combine learning about St Miguel and learning about making healthy choices about how we fuel our bodies to be at our best each day.

Our Year 6 House Captains created a really informative presentation and Kahoot quiz to help everyone learn about the wonderful life of St Miguel and all that he achieved. Each class completed this task during one of their lessons. The High School Captains led a service project at lunch time by selling tasty, healthy, green snacks and juices to the children, raising lots of money for RPX Boy's home - The Hope Branch in the process.

Francisco Febres Cordero was born into a noble family that has always been well known in Ecuadorian politics. As soon as he was born, he had to overcome family hostility to then realize his life's work was to be a lay religious leader, the first native of Ecuador to be received into the Institute.

NURSERY
We have had a wonderful start to the school year, with many of us returning to physical school within our first term. The children have shown so much courage and resilience to the changes faced during our transition. For some of us, this was a brand new experience, while for the rest we were thrilled to be able to finally meet our old friends again as well as make new ones.
Despite these challenges, we have been able to persevere and thrive in our learning! Some of our highlights this year include our Christmas Nativity, our ever engaging traditional tales topic, learning about transport, and blasting off to space! One of our most beloved stories this year was, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. We enjoyed all the sensory related experiences and it sparked the children’s interest to create their own versions of the story for the first time!
Throughout the year, the children have grown in their confidence and independence. They are proud of their accomplishments and have developed a wonderful sense of community as a class. More importantly, they have learned to be kind and caring individuals. It has been a great pleasure teaching Nursery and I commend each and every member of the Penguins class for making this such a great success!

It has been a busy but exciting year for Reception! The children were thrilled to be able to return to school early in the year to reunite with old friends again as well as make new ones. The year came with several challenges but the children have shown their virtues of kindness, consideration and care for each other.
We have enjoyed a range of topics throughout the year, From Space, to Transport, to Under the Sea, and one of our popular topics, Pirates! We loved being creative and imaginative in our play and through this we were able to share common interests with each other as well as learn together. We helped each other in times of need, where some of us have grown to become great role models for others while others have grown into independent individuals.
It has been a fantastic and memorable year for Reception and we look forward to seeing everyone’s friendly faces next year in Year 1!

CLASS 1S
What a year! From nervous faces arriving back into physical school to the strong and confident characters I now see. The difficult start to our year showed me just how resilient, understanding and committed all of 1S are. They gave it their all from the first day and this same enthusiasm and passion for learning has continued back in the classroom. It has been wonderful to see them back in school and have the opportunities to take control of their own learning and make choices that best suit them. Our classroom environment has grown with them and helped us to become inquisitive learners asking keen questions.
We have covered many topics and 'traveled' to many different places. Italy, being one of our favourites during International week. 1S showed what great pirates they would make as we learnt how to navigate using a compass and map read. Together, we explored what makes us all 'superhumans' as we investigated the human body and all it can do. It has been a packed year as we wrote our own fairytales, published them and even created the artwork for the front covers. It feels like we have done it all!
I have had the most fantastic year being in 1S and I wish all of the children the best in the future.

Ms Eunice Foo
CLASS 1J
Resilience, flexibility and courage are the virtues that best describe our 1J community. Beginning the year online was difficult for all, and we all had to work harder at establishing new relationships. I was so proud to see 1J take this in their stride and show patience whilst waiting for the moment we could return to school. The children’s delight and excitement when this finally became possible is a moment I will never forget. As our shared learning space filled with smiles and enthusiasm, active learning became possible, and the return of true collaboration, discussion and inquiry helped us grow into confident learners.
Our highlights include taking on the role of a pirate and learning just how unhealthy we were! We fixed this of course, by planning and making some healthy pirate packed lunches. Our Lichtenstein art project was a hit, we rejoiced at becoming authors, and of course, one of our favourite memories will always be of our class mascot, Pete the Cat. He has been there with us from beginning to end, sharing his magical morning messages to make us smile!
If there is one thing we will never forget, it is time we have spent together learning alongside our friends. I wish all of 1J the best of luck in their new chapter at St Joseph’s and beyond.

Starting the year online was indeed a lot of fun because who doesn't like eating a doughnut during a spelling test? Jokes aside, online learning has given us computing skills at a younger age than any generation before us. Having said that, it has allowed us to truly appreciate the joys of physically being back in school with each other.
Our favourite subjects, in no particular order are, English, IPC, Maths and Computing. Oddly, all the lessons that Ms Wright and Ms Hema teach!
We have loved physically being able to choose books in the library, it is also where we have met some fantastic and chocolaty characters created by Roald Dahl. Just imagine how engrossed in Book Week we were. Each day we searched for letters and riddles from the Book Fairies, wrote a new adventure story for a book character called Claude, got dressed up as our favourite courageous characters and went on a treasure hunt!
It has been an unforgettable year for 2S. Together we have grown, shared our learning, thoughts, ideas, challenges, achievements, experiences, but most of all, together we have played.

It seems like such a long time ago that we all met each other as a new class via zoom. Starting online was difficult for all but even then the enthusiasm for school and positive attitudes to learning were clear to see.
Returning to school was a real delight, seeing the children walk into school with smiles on their faces and months of catching up to do with their friends. Since then we have been fortunate to have a consistent spell in school, helping the children to bond as a class and form strong friendships with their peers. Both online and in school, the children have shown the virtues of unity, kindness and helpfulness through their interactions with one another.
This year 2J have had many exciting experiences. We have gone on adventures with Claude and Sir Bobblysock, Sid and his Grandad and to the depths of Antarctica with a waddle of penguins. We even managed to go on holiday to the ‘SJIIM Wellness Resort’, a particular highlight for everyone!
I have thoroughly enjoyed being the children’s class teacher and wish them all the best in Year Three.

From kicking the year off on Zoom and celebrating International Week online to being back on campus and enjoying a relaxing day at the ‘SJIIM Wellness Resort’, we have had an amazing year filled with unforgettable moments in 2I!
We have loved exploring characters in books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and Claude in the City (will we ever find out what Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes look like??). Needless to say, Book Week was a major highlight of our year. Each morning was filled with anticipation as we waited for a message from the Book Fairy. We eagerly shared our favourite books and who could forget the treasure hunt!
Together, we became published authors of fiction and non-fiction books, conquered the climbing frame, and refined our swim strokes. We celebrated successes and supported each other through challenges. Together, we grew.

CLASS 2M
2M have been truly fantastic this year showing many virtues, but courage, enthusiasm, friendliness and unity best describe the 2M community. From the first meeting on zoom, sharing our pets and art work online to helping and supporting each other in school, 2M have shown flexibility and resilience, taking everything in their stride with a smile on their face.
It is fair to say that we learn best when we are having fun and with our friends. Whether this be creating stories for Claude the dog, visiting Grandad’s island or creating instruments for Ossiri, there have been many opportunities for collaboration and creativity.
We have travelled to Brazil for international week and explored seven wonders of the world. And who could forget our holiday to the SJIIM health resort and the activities including a wellness walk, making smoothies and practising yoga that was certainly a highlight of the year.
2M have enjoyed celebrating Deepavali, Christmas and Hari Raya and are always eager to take part in a dress up, especially during book week.
As I reflect on the year I feel incredibly proud to have taught such kind, caring and hard-working students and I will miss them greatly. I wish you all the best as you continue your learning journey into year 3 and beyond.

What a fantastic year we have had in 3S! From starting the year virtually and continuing to demonstrate the virtues of resilience and flexibility to the excitement of returning to physical school once again. One of my favourite moments this year has been seeing the growth in the children’s confidence back in the classroom and seeing their smiley, bubbly personalities shine around the school.
Learning highlights this year included reading about Ug’s adventures, learning about the Stone Age and rocks, followed by writing our own Stone Age adventure books - I know this is a piece of writing all of 3S felt really proud of! We learnt about the human body and how our skeleton and muscular systems work. Lastly, I know 3S would want to mention time tables and all of our class games to become the super speedy mathematicians that they are!
It has been an absolute pleasure teaching this year group once again. I have loved being able to look back on where they were in year one and seeing where they are now and what wonderful people they are becoming. I look forward to seeing their friendly faces around the school next year.

We began the year with courage and determination in 3J. Starting in a new class with a new teacher online was different yet we maintained positivity and enthusiasm. Once we returned to physical school, it was a joy to interact with each other again, both in and outside lessons. We especially loved seeing our friends again and being able to enjoy areas that are perhaps more difficult online, such as art, drama, sport, CCAs and virtues ceremonies. Getting back into the pool was something we were so excited about!
We learned such a lot in our IPC topics and especially loved learning about the past and the human body. We also wrote many amazing stories and information texts connected to our topics. Another highlight was performing an assembly on stage before an audience. We demonstrated dedication as well as impressive dancing skills! When we pause to consider our memorable moments, we realise that there have been many this year, even though we are still continuing our journey towards ‘normality’.
As 3J’s teacher, I have been incredibly impressed and heartened by the adaptability, joyfulness and kindness that they have shown as members of our community and I feel very fortunate to have had the pleasure of teaching this wonderful class.

The children in 3I have amazed me with their resilience, determination and grit this year. Time and time again they have shown the virtue of flexibility by seamlessly moving between home learning and physical school, without losing their zest and joy. They have taken on challenges with a smile, cemented old friendships while making new ones, and they have made me very proud.
Some highlights this year include learning about Greece during International Week, which culminated in an ancient Greek dress up day. We also learned about dinosaurs and became anthropologists, making fact files for our favourite dinosaurs. In addition, we were wowed by ‘The Human Body’, where we took a close look at the skeletal system, understood its purpose and enjoyed learning many fun facts. In Maths we tackled times table facts, became experts in using bar models to solve word problems and had engaging discussions about units of measurement.
Over the year, I have seen the students mature, become more independent and flourish as individuals. It has been a true honour and privilege to watch them grow. As they continue through life, I hope they never forget to keep learning, to keep having fun and to keep smiling.

CLASS 4S

Well done to all the students in 4S this year. We have had such a fun learning journey. Being able to physically interact with each other has really helped to build and strengthen our little class community.
In our English lessons we traveled boldly with Arthur through the Norse world via our class novel ‘Arthur and the Golden Robe’, performed our own poems inspired by the works of Michael Rosen in front of a live audience and even took to the stage showcasing our acting skills in the first live class assembly since 2020!
In IPC we learnt about what it was like to be both a pharaoh and a slave in Ancient Egyptian times. The children constructed their own pyramids from junk materials and enjoyed taking on the role of a powerful pharaoh in our drama lessons.
During our PSHE lessons we focussed on ‘Connection’. Through guided discussions and paired activities, the children learned how to connect with each other in a meaningful way. We also worked in groups to identify the different support systems that we have in our lives and devised safe strategies to use in different risky situations.
Our class motto is ‘Be kind, try your best, none of us are perfect’.

CLASS 4J
Mrs Vidya Thomas

As a new teacher to the school I was not expecting to meet my new class online at the beginning of the school year. However, 4J quickly welcomed me and I could see their personalities shining through.
This year 4J have particularly enjoyed our IPC topics including Ancient Egypt where they acted out the mummification process and created pyramids out of recycled materials. During our ‘Bright Sparks’ topic the children enjoyed learning how to make circuits and testing different conductors and insulators.
In English the children have enjoyed Poetry by Michael Rosen and performing poetry. As well as writing the next quest for ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’.
During International week we studied Iceland, although online it was still full of fun especially, as they learnt the ‘Hardest Karaoke’ song in the world.
Some of the highlights that I know the children have enjoyed have included World Book day, Spirit Day’s for each house and having CCA’s back. 4J have shown flexibility, determination and resilience throughout the year. I have enjoyed getting to know them all individually and it has been a pleasure to watch them grow and mature throughout the year. I wish them well in Year 5.

From the start of the year, 4I students have shown great resilience as we learnt online again for a short period of time. As we transitioned into physical school, true friendships blossomed and children showed fantastic social skills such as communicating, collaborating and playing effectively with their peers. Children have really embraced and savored the opportunities they have had to learn through experiences, especially with practical subjects such as P.E and Science. They have learnt fantastic skills in researching and digging deep to find information about the different topics we have learnt in IPC: ‘Temples, Tombs and Treasures’, ‘Bright Sparks’, ‘Turn It Up!’ and ‘Climate Change’ units. Not to mention honing their skills in presenting their findings to the class!
We have some of the most creative, imaginative, thoughtful and open-minded children in the year group in 4I and I wish them all the best on embarking on their journey through Year 5!
Children in 4I can always call Mrs. Bayfield on her Banana Phone if they need her!

4M have been superstars this year! I have been so impressed with their flexibility and maturity both in the physical and virtual classrooms. We have had many highlights together including: studying Ancient Egypt, International fortnight, performing poetry and much much more! In our first IPC topic of the year, Ancient Egypt we learned all about the crazy mummification process, the fascinating Pharaohs and the extraordinary pyramids. International fortnight was a highlight of the year, where year four studied the amazing country of Iceland. We learnt the ‘hardest karaoke song in the world’ all about the northern lights, the stunningly beautiful landscape and some of Iceland's geographical features. This was great fun! We also compared many of Iceland’s features to Malaysia and discussed the similarities and differences. I think after studying this amazing country we would all like to visit! Well done 4M, I will miss you all!!

CLASS 5S

The 5S classroom this year has been filled with laughter and learning. We have been so lucky to have had a consistent period of physical school, which has allowed us to focus on all of the active learning that we have missed over the past two years. We have used drama at every opportunity to add authenticity to our writing, dropped water bottles off bridges to test Galileo’s theory of how mass affects gravity, produced giant mazes and handheld labyrinths, tested our navigational skills with robots in maths, and so much more.
All of these activities - combined with reading wonderful books, expressing ourselves through writing, scientific inquiry, and being challenged and stretched in maths - have resulted in great progress, huge leaps in confidence, and all of us (including the adults!) being excited to come to school everyday.
We are so proud and impressed by how well 5S have committed and dedicated themselves to life back in school , and it has been a joy to see them feel such a sense of pride and accomplishment from their learning, to take care of each other, and to find the fun - and funny - in absolutely everything.

We have had a wonderful year in 5J. The sheer delight at being able to spend time with each other, learn from each other, and laugh with each other has been evident from the very first day we made it back to physical school. Across all areas of the curriculum, and in every activity, we have seen the children’s enthusiasm, creativity and sense of community.
We have explored the far reaches of our solar system, creating our own Mars rovers, and we have followed the adventures of Ernest Shackelton as he explored the far reaches of our own planet.
We have learnt about ancient societies and cultures through the adventures of Odysseus, and myths and legends from closer to home.
We have also learnt how we can be of service, not just to each other, but to our community through our Earthshot project - and we hope to see the impact of our actions over the next few months and years.
We have been so impressed with the children in 5J’s desire to constantly push themselves to achieve more, to strive to do better, and to enjoy their time with each other.

CLASS 5I
Well done to all the students in 5I this year. We are a small class but have had some big achievements! Since returning to physical school, it has been wonderful to see friendships develop and strengthen within the class and year group. Across all curriculum areas, the children have demonstrated an eagerness to learn and have approached all tasks and activities with joyfulness and enthusiasm.
We have enjoyed many speaking and listening activities, using role play, debates and persuasive speeches to enhance our confidence and deepen our learning. These activities, and the interesting range of books we have read, have resulted in fantastic writing from everyone.
We have been interviewed by Ernest Shackleton, designed and built Mars rovers, created giant labyrinths to walk through, used watercolours and collage materials to create Antarctic landscape scenes and created our own Mars board games to showcase our learning.
We have used the virtue of service through the Earthshot project, reducing plastic waste in our school and establishing a recycling scheme. It has been lovely teaching 5I this year and we have been so impressed with their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm.

CLASS 5M
We have had an excellent year of learning in 5M. Since their return to physical school, the whole class have shown a love of learning and an enthusiasm for the world around them. They have formed close friendships and are always looking out for one another, showing the virtues of unity and kindness.
The class loved learning about the adventures of Ernest Shackleton and Odysseus, and created some amazing pieces of drama to represent these historic tales. Their writing has been exceptional during our learning about The Highwayman and The Chronicles of Harris Burdick.
In our IPC learning we have explored the ancient societies of Greece and Rome, the outer reaches of our galaxy and myths and legends from all around the world. The class has shown the virtues of creativity and collaboration throughout our learning, making some incredible projects during these lessons. In our Earthshot project, they learnt how they can make a real change to the world around them and I hope that this experience will continue to inspire them in the future.
It has been a pleasure to teach this class, and I am confident that all of them will continue to excel in their learning at SJIIM.

From hilarious free writes to Just Dance in the classroom, 6S have made this year one I will never forget. The humour and kindness they bring to their lessons, both online and in physical school, have made the year go by so quickly. New friendships have been formed and memories made. I hope that they will look back fondly on the time we spent together, discovering new novels such as Fire, Bed and Bone and Wonder. They are the first year 6 cohort to benefit from the new model, which meant they experienced different teachers showing them different experiences. Many valuable hours were spent in the science lab, drama rooms and in their own classrooms discovering new topics and learning new skills. I am sure they will remember their candy filled IPC learning stations with year 4 for many years to come! The children have shown so many of the virtues during our time together that it is difficult to list them here. They have been flexible when faced with changes, have shown the virtue of perseverance when working on challenging topics... Most importantly of all, I believe, they have shown joyfulness throughout their time in Year 6.

CLASS 6J
Perseverance, flexibility and commitment are only a few of the virtues which 6J have shown in great depth throughout this year. Whether accessing their learning virtually or being in the classroom, we have a wonderful bunch of fine young people who are dedicated to their learning and their relationships with their peers and teachers. They have adapted to our subject specialist model in year 6 and shown wonderful organisation and independence which will benefit them greatly as they transition to High School.
In English, they loved exploring novels throughout different stages of history such as Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Fire Bed and Bone and Letters to the Lighthouse as well as more contemporary texts such as Wonder. In Maths with Ms Chin, they have been motivated to extend their learning on units such as fractions and measurement as well as gaining a basic understanding of new units like algebra. Mr Wilson’s Science lessons in the ES laboratory have enabled students to explore new practical experiments such as dissecting a heart and creating their own electrical switches. It has been an absolute pleasure to teach 6J and I wish them all the very best in High School.

CLASS 6I
6I had to wait until November to be together in the classroom but they’ve certainly made up for lost time since then! After their initial stint of virtual learning, it’s been a joy to see them spending time together in person - working collaboratively and displaying the virtues of friendliness and enthusiasm every day. It was really clear just how much 6I valued each other’s company this year! They’ve made me laugh every day and despite their unhealthy obsession with a certain Mr R Astley and a ridiculous number of other internet memes, they have still managed to fully apply themselves during lessons - whether that be getting lost in novels like Wonder or making algebra look as easy as a, b, c (or should that be x, y, z?). They’ve also really enjoyed taking trips to the new elementary science lab which has really enriched this area of the curriculum. From inspecting dissected hearts, to dodging a cola fountain, science lessons have been a real high point of our learning. Looking ahead and with high school now approaching, I wish 6I the very best of luck for next year knowing that they are more than ready for the challenges ahead.
