THE SFERRA STORY The history of SFERRA begins in 1891 when the company’s industrious founder, Gennaro Sferra, left Italy for the United States with a trunk full of handmade Venetian lace and a vision of the American Dream. He found an appreciative clientele for his artisanal wares in the well-heeled guests (and their dressmakers and tailors) summering along the grand seaside resorts which dotted the East Coast from Maine to Palm Beach. Soon thereafter, his two brothers Filomeno and Pasquale joined Gennaro to form Sferra Bros. Ltd. By 1905, Gennaro had established a lacemaking atelier and school in Venice, situated along a canal, 5007 San Severo, in the shadow of the Rialto Bridge. Twice yearly, Gennaro crisscrossed the Atlantic by steamship to import his latest creations of table linens handcrafted from linen, delicate lace, and lavish embroidery. A generation later, in the 1940s and 1950s, Gennaro’s two sons, Enrico and Albert, expanded their father’s collection to include the most luxurious European handmade linens of the day—Ireland’s renowned double damask, France’s refined Alençon Laces, and beautiful embroideries from Belgium and Switzerland. For those in the know, SFERRA became a household name. In the intervening years since Gennaro’s sons retired, SFERRA has come to define a new standard of excellence for the luxury linens marketplace, introducing game-changing textiles year after year: Celeste, the country’s most popular percale; Milos and Millesimo, the first-ever bed linens to break the 1,000 TC barrier, which “…turned the industry on its head.” (Departures, 2006); 101 Colors of Festival table linens; and perhaps most famed of all: the matchless SFERRA GIZA 45 bed linen collections, spun and woven from Giza 45, “The Queen of Egyptian Cotton”, a special genus of cotton renowned for its superior fabrication properties.
