Foreword

From our Academic Adviser

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have now come to the end of the 2019-2020 academic year and it is time to recognize
and celebrate the fact that this year marks Sekolah Bogor Raya’s 25th anniversary. Our school
had humble beginnings when it started way back in 1995 as the international preschool
of Bogor. At the time it had a total school roll of just 14 students. We are now a school of
around 750 students which is testament to just what a fantastic job SBR has done as an
educational institution.

The school was founded by Douglas and Nina Stoltz, who after searching for a world class
school in Bogor created an ambitious plan to start their own school. The seed they planted
has certainly become a mighty oak tree. The school has grown from a preschool into a school
that spans from Playgroup all the way up to Grade 12 and runs international curriculum
from both Cambridge and the International Baccalaureate. The school has continued to
grow and has strived to constantly improve the quality of teaching, it’s facilities and is
always preparing for the future. The amount of dedication and hard work needed to take
a school from a small preschool to the community you are all a part of now is immense. So
let’s take a moment to thank everyone, f rom the drivers, to security, admin, maintenance,
gardeners, librarians, teachers and management team for all the blood sweat and tears you
have put in to make this school a success.

We must also recognize that some of the people who started this journey are no longer
with us and I want to acknowledge those people by saying thank you for your dream, your
hard work and the passion that has created a second home for so many of us.

The quality of the students graduating f rom Sekolah Bogor Raya is something to be very
proud of. Each and every year we have well rounded young adults who are heading off to
university and into the world with the confidence, the skills and independence needed to
not only survive but to thrive.

We have an amazing community which has grown in size and strength over the years
and has had incredible support f rom parents, teachers and of course our yayasan, Yayasan
Danasha. Thank you all for an incredible journey so far and as the song goes it’s only just
begun. Our school is continuing its journey, and it’s a journey of constant learning, reflection,
planning and implementation and improvement.

I personally have been at SBR for 10 years in total from that 25 year timeline. I apologize that
I have not had the opportunity to say goodbye to you all face to face due to the Covid-19
pandemic which really put a damper on the conclusion to this academic year. I have made
incredible memories along the way and although this is my last year here, I will most
certainly be back for visits in the future. I am sure every time I do visit the school, I will see
the type of growth and improvement we have come to expect from the high standards set
by Sekolah Bogor Raya. I hope you all continue to learn together and inspire success.
Take care, stay healthy and I wish you each and every member of the SBR community
success for the future.

Tips of the Month

Andri Nurcahyani, Secondary Level Principal

What Makes a Successful Online Learner?

The COVID-19 Pandemic has resulted in schools being shut all across the world; including
Indonesia and our school, Sekolah Bogor Raya. Globally, over 1.2 billion children are out of
the classroom. Education has changed dramatically, with the rise of e-learning, whereby
teaching is done on digital platforms.

Sekolah Bogor Raya has shifted to online learning since March 16, 2020. It was a new and
challenging process for all of us and we all needed to adjust with the new situation. Despite
the challenges of online learning, we always aim to help our students to be successful
learners as online learning requires specific skills and learning strategies in order to succeed.

During the online home learning, it was good to see the motivation and spirit of learning
that was shown by our students. They had meaningful interactions during the synchronous
learning sessions and demonstrated good time management skills in studying independently
during asynchronous learning and meeting all the deadlines of the assignments set. Here
are some important qualities that are needed and that our students developed during the
online home learning program.

1. Persistence
Persistence is one of the biggest keys to success in online learning. Students who succeed
are those who are willing to tolerate technical problems, seek help when needed, work daily
on every class, and persist through challenges. They focus on their goals and persistently
put in their best effort to achieve them.

2. Effective Time-Management Skills
Students should be able to manage their time well as most courses are not taught in
real time. There are so many learning materials they need to learn independently during
asynchronous learning. This flexibility is one of the great benefits of online learning.
However, at the same time, it can also be a drawback for a student who procrastinates and
is unable to complete assignments independently. Effective time-management skills have
to be learned. They will benefit the students throughout their life.

3. Effective and Appropriate Communication Skills
Communication skills are vital in online learning because students must seek help when
they need it. Teachers are willing to help students, but they are unable to pick up on non-

4

verbal cues, such as a look of confusion on a student’s face. Students should use the tools
provided by the school to communicate with their teachers; such as e-mail, discussion
groups, chat room office hours, cell phones, and even text messaging.

Students should also use appropriate style and language when communicating with
teachers and other staff. Many students are used to a very informal style of writing in chat
rooms, blogs, text messages, and so forth.

4. Basic Technical Skills
Online learners need basic technical skills to succeed. These include the ability to create
new documents, use a word processing program, navigate the Internet, and download
software.

5. Reading and Writing Skills
Reading and writing are the main ways you’ll communicate in an online class. Although
some hard copies of textbooks might be required, you should be comfortable reading a lot
of documents on a computer screen and able to type.

6. Motivation and Independence
To be successful, an online student has to want to succeed. Online learning requires
independence, internal motivation, responsibility, and a certain level of maturity.

7. A Good Study Environment
Another critical component of academic success is a good study environment. Students
will need a quiet place to work without distractions f rom things like television, family or
roommates. They should also avoid playing games during learning. Therefore it is important
to uninstall any computer games to avoid temptation or keep the games on a different
computer in the house. Turn off the cell phone. Let friends and family members know the
hours that you will be “at” school. Consider ergonomics: adjust the height of your chair,
keyboard and screen so that the students feel comfortable. Set up good lighting and
comfortable seating. Lighting in the room should also be at least as bright as the computer
screen to avoid eye strain.

Those are some of the important skills to be successful online learners. Certainly there
are more skills that are needed and could be developed, but I am sure the experience of
having online home learning has improved our quality as learners and equip us to go back
to school next academic year as a better learner.

Here are some points summarized by an article on: https://careerwise.minnstate.edu/

Sharing and Caring From SBR to its Supporting Staff

On Tuesday, 19th May 2020, Sekolah Bogor Raya (SBR) conducted a sharing and caring
moment by distributing basic needs (food and drinks) to all supporting team members of
SBR.
The donation was collected in 3 weeks among teachers, staff and school management and
the total of collected donation is IDR 20.305.000.
From the amount, SBR organized packages of basic needs (food and drinks) and on
the day, the head of our school Board of Trustees, Ibu Regina Hartati was there to lead
the programme and distributed the packages to our supporting staff; there were team
members from different areas of work such as drivers, cleaning services, securities and the

Sekolah Bogor Raya Hydroponic Farm

Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture, which is a method of growing plants without soil,
by instead using mineral nutrient solutions in water. Plants that are commonly grown
hydroponically, on inert media, include tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, lettuces and many
more.

In 2016, a hydroponics farm was built on the rooftop of Building 3. The size of the farm is
13m2 x 47m2. There are 30 trays and each of them is 1m x 3m. This has led to the students
learning a lot about the science behind hydroponics and the importance of urban farming
for the future. The produce is sold to our school community members and this encourages
us to maintain a balanced and healthy diet. Recently, we also provide vegetables such as
kailan to a customer, one of the restaurants in Kota Bogor.

In Sekolah Bogor Raya (SBR), we plant
water spinach, lettuce, chinese kale,
pakchoi, and green spinach.

For all techniques, most hydroponic
reservoirs are now built of plastic,
but other materials have been used
including concrete, glass, metal,
vegetable solids, and wood.
In SBR, we use floating raft hydroponic systems. The plants are grown in containers of
nutrient solution, such as buckets, tubs, or tanks. The surface of the water is covered
with styrofoam which is given a hole where the plant seeds grow. The nutrient solution is
changed either on a schedule, such as once per week, or when the concentration drops
below a certain level as determined with an electrical conductivity meter.

Hydroponics offers many advantages, one of them being a decrease in water usage for
agriculture. It would be possible in the future for harsh environments, which don’t have
much accessible water, to be able to grow our own food.

8

CONGRATULATIONS to all the participants who joined the 1st quiz for SBR’s anniversary,
and received a bag of vegetables from SBR hydroponic field. Stay healthy and happy!

Happy Learners

K1 - K2

K1

We have ended theme 4 and students will continue their learning journey. In this theme,
K1A learned about natural changes (day & night and weather) through Online Learning at
home. As we know, in the middle of a pandemic this theme is very challenging and hard
either for the school, teachers, parents and students. With the good teamwork from the
teachers, parents and students, we can successely pass this theme. On the other hand, the
learning will end soon and everyone should stay at home in the middle of this pandemic.
Here are some tips for staying home during holiday activities for the kids. Planting activity,
students can plant at home with their parents using their own Morning Glory plant.
Dancing with parents, students can dance with their parents at home so students still can
do exercise during stay at home.

10

K2

Cooking an Omelette with Family
Time flies so fast, we didn’t even realize that we are already at the end of the fourth theme
which is “How we organize ourselves.” Students learned about the different kinds of
transportation, the different purposes of transportation and how transportation connects
people and surroundings. During this theme, students experienced a new learning method
which is online learning due to the global pandemic. Even though students learned through
online learning, they were still enthusiastic to follow the learning process. The parents’
support also really helped make the learning process goes well.
As we are going to have the holiday, and still staying at home, we suggest a fun activity
that can be good which involves parents and children. It will be fun and engaging. The
activity is “Cooking An Omelet With Family”. Some parents may prefer to work alone in
the kitchen. It is sometimes quicker, less messy, and often just easier but when families
cook together, its benefits are more worth than the extra clean up. The benefits of this
activity are as follows: First, the family can bond as cooking together gives families a
time to share, connect, and work together. Second, the children can learn “soft skills”
as they can learn a range of skills in the kitchen, and explore on their own. They can learn
more about social skills, communication skills, and collaboration when cooking together.
Third, the children can learn practical skills as they prepare the ingredients and cook the
omelet. Hopefully, this activity would be great and useful while spending the holiday with
family at home. Thank you and good luck for the next academic year.

PYP in Actions

K3 - Grade 6

During these past weeks, we are strongly encouraged to stay at home and do all the
necessary things from where we live. As the pandemic continues, many people are finding
themselves wondering how to keep kids busy and entertained. One of the best ways is by
making crafts with the little ones.

Children are often engaged in any activity related to creativity. Making crafts seems simple
but it has a lot of benefits for kids as it promotes child development. Here are some of
them:
1. Motor Skill: When kids use their fingers to manipulate art materials they are developing

their fine motor skills as they use those small muscles in their hands.
2. Creativity: By doing something creative, you allow self-expression and this lets kids

express and cope with their feelings.
3. Communication: When kids make art or crafts, they get to talk about their work, which

develops their communication skills.
4. Math Concepts: Kids get to learn and recognize different shapes, count and sort out

their art supplies and even measure lengths and sizes of art materials.
5. Self-esteem: Art and craft activities give kids a sense of achievement and allow them to

take pride in their work which builds conf idence.

With limited resources since you are home and not possible for you to go to the store
for getting art supplies, here are some simple crafts that you can make using basic Art
materials that your child may already have at home.
- Origami Paper (Paper Airplane)
- Newspaper (Cat Collage)
- Toilet paper roll (Bowling Pins)

12

Kids just love to spend time with their parents and what better way than to do arts and
crafts together! You get to spend quality bonding time with your kids and at the same
time, you are creating lifelong memories to cherish. You can talk about what you think, feel,
and care about. And as an added bonus, your child isn’t using technology or looking at a
screen! This may be not the ideal time, but we can still make the best of it. Bonding with
our kids is one golden moment that we need to cherish.

Prep

A Letter f rom Prep Teachers
It has been an incredible journey this year in Prep. There are a lot of moments that we
shared together, happy, sad, and even the challenging one as we experienced learning
from home due to the pandemic situation.
We are amazed by how much Prep students have grown in learning. At the beginning
of the year, their eyes sparks curiosity and eagerness to learn. Now, they have become
great inquirers and communicators. They took an active part in building the community of
learners in the classroom as they excitedly share their ideas and opinions. We can see how
much Prep students enjoyed school and loved playing together with their f riends. Every
single day, they have spread kindness by giving smiles, compliments, helping hands and
taking care of each other.

14

It is with a heavy heart that this year we need to say farewell to each other virtually. Even
so, we will always cherish all the warm and beautiful memories and be proud of all the
accomplishments that Prep students achieved this year.
Thank you Prep students, it is our absolute pleasure to become your teachers and our great
privilege to call all of you our beloved students.
The time has come for you to embark a new journey as Grade 1 students. Congratulations
and may all of your dreams come true. Please remember that wherever you go and whatever
you do, you will always be important and special to us.

child throughout this year. Thank you for your cooperation especially during the E-learning
process, which we understand fully that it was tough and challenging. We would like to
give our gratitude for entrusting your child to our care this year. We hope that this is not a
farewell, as we loved to hear your child’s great accomplishments in the near future.
With love,

Grade 3

Dear beloved Grade 3 students,

We could say that this 2019-2020 academic year was one of the most memorable
experiences in teaching and learning. No one ever imagined something like this would
happen. Students, parents and teachers have to deal with something unpredictable. We
have to learn new things in a very fast mode and as teachers we personally have to learn
many new things during this online home learning, especially related to technology. We
learn about new digital platforms and also learn how to solve the problems when faced
with challenges during this period. We do believe students and parents face similar things,
or even harder than us. We did struggle at the beginning, however both students and
parents remarkably showed positive improvement week by week.
We did worry about the learning process during the online home learning. We did worry
whether our students could understand the materials since they cannot always ask their
teachers, perhaps parents were still working or busy with other things. We just counted
on technology and internet connection to communicate our learning process. Every day
is challenging during this online home learning, but we couldn’t be more grateful to have
our wonderful students. The grade three students did an amazing job. They always try to
follow and do each activity based on the materials and instructions given. Many of them
try to be independent to do their own work. They were always learning many new things
and became problem solvers.

Ibu Lia, Pak Chandra, Ibu NIta, Ibu Terra, Ibu Tirza and Ibu Agatha, we would like to say we
are all so proud of our grade 3 students. Everything happens for a reason. This pandemic
and the online home learning happened for a good one, which was to improve different
aspects of our life and skills. We are proud to see how conf ident you are to deal with
everything. You all have shown the very best in you and gave your best. You all have shown
your communication skills in working together and your courage as a risk-taker in trying
new things. Yet, the most important one is how you have shown your empathy and your
care for others. All moments will be missed. Just like in any game you play, you all have
passed this level. It is time to level up for a more challenging but fun level that is grade 4.

19

Thank you Grade 3 for the amazing and memorable year well spent with all of you

Please always remember that learning is a never ending process. Due to the situations that
don’t allow us to have a proper farewell, we will still remember one another and cherish
how proud we are to have you as our students. Good luck and see you soon! (INCA)

Grade 4

We are Grade 4 superheroes

To our dearest 4th Graders,
It was such a blessing to have all of you inside our class this year. You colored our days with
many stories and experiences. We are so grateful for having the chance being not only
your teacher, but also your friend and someone you can trust. It was so sad that in the last
two months we have to be apart and do our teaching and learning activities online. Yet, we
are amazed at how well you can adjust yourself with the new system so that you can keep
learning something f rom us. Finally, we have to end our togetherness this year. Here are
some words that we would like to say for having all of you as our students.

20

Our memorable moments in 4A

Ibu Rosdiana: “It has been an amazing year watching each and every one of you learn and
grow. The year has come and gone so quickly. And now, the end of year is already here.
So, let me express my gratitude to you as you allow me to spend one of my best times in
a life with you. I was so grateful to have all of you in Grade 4A. You all are so amazing with
the biggest hearts and wonderful personalities. We are very proud of your achievement.
Believe in yourself, for you are stronger and smarter than you know. Remember to always
work hard and never give up! Good luck next year in Grade 5.”

Ibu Nancy: “I cannot imagine that it would be this fast. It feels like just yesterday that I
welcomed you to class 4A, and now it’s already the time to wish you luck in the new level.
I do not have any words to express how proud I am to be your teacher. I have learned a lot
from you and I really enjoyed every moment we shared during this year. I am so proud
of all the improvement and achievement you showed during our learning time. You are
wonderful children with many ideas, insights, and dreams. Never stop to give your best in
everything, then everything will be OK for you. Good luck for your new adventure in Grade
5.”

21

Our amazing experience in 4B

Ibu Anisha: “It’s been only nine months since we formally met and spent our time together.
You have amazed me with your brilliance. That is why I loved challenging you, pushing you
further than you ever imagined only to see a spark of understanding flash across your face.
You have learned a lot of things in grade 4. I am certain you are absolutely capable of doing
anything in the world that you want to. Work hard in your next journey, set goals and do
everything in your power to achieve them, and remember how smart you are! I will not be
surprised at your success, I know who you are! And I’ll not only think of how much you’ve
learned but also how much you’ve taught me as we’ve grown.”

Ibu Adonia: “We already reached the end of the academic year. I want to say thank you for
the opportunity given to me to see you, to know you, to teach you, and to learn from all of
you. You have been my source of happiness in the classroom. Even when we had a problem
in the classroom, we were able to solve it together. We are truly a good team, aren’t we? As
a teacher, deep in my heart, I want to stay longer with you. But I know, you have to upgrade
yourself, your knowledge, your skills, and experience new and wonderful things in the next
level. Last, I believe, you will have a great experience at the next level as you grow more and
more. Enjoy your new journey, keep doing your best, and keep showing your love to each
other.”

22

Our wonderful stories in 4C

Pak Rizqy: “Finally, this is the end of our academic year. Let me share my thoughts and
gratitude to you. I spent my best year with all of you. I was amazed at how you always put
your best effort in learning, especially in the last theme. I really appreciate your willingness
to follow the lesson f rom home. You also have been so resilient by continuing to practice
the lesson independently, and not hesitating to ask for additional information when you
face some difficulties. Grade 5 awaits, I really hope you enjoy every single moment you
have. Always feel grateful and be more focused on learning. I can’t wait to see you again
soon.”

Bu Esther: “We’ve already passed 1 year together! It means we’ve already shared our
experience, learning together, working together, sharing ideas and solving the problems
together. I am so proud to have had you as my students. You are resilient students, who
can respect each other and are open-minded to others’ opinions. You wanted to take a risk
when doing the market day and interviewing people to have a survey. I am so pleased to
see how disciplined and respectful you are to the teachers and f riends. To be f rank, I got a
lot of experience from you and learned to be more patient in being a teacher. For the next
school year, you have to be more independent and be able to manage your time well in
doing your work. Keep up the good work and thank you very much for being my angels
during this year.”

Thank you, students and good luck for another journey in Grade 5! Best wishes from us to
you! (NP)

24

Grade 5

Dear the amazing Grade 5,
A year has passed since you started your grade 5 adventure. You did all the six transdisciplinary
themes in your magical and resilient way. We made f riends, we argued and we reconciled.
The group works were sometimes challenging, but you learned to deal with it and you
learned to show tolerance. You also sometimes were overwhelmed with all the projects,
but you used it as your chance to improve your skills. You never forgot to put your creativity
in every work. You never knew how much we were amazed when we checked out the
result. We also learned together to adapt with this situation, when the pandemic forced us
to stay at home and kept our distance. You showed us that even in diff icult times, we are
still in this together. You strengthened your f riendship and became a Grade 5 family. It is an
honor for us, your teachers, to watch you grow and improve. And, let us tell you something,
every day, we also learn many things f rom you, dear students.
We are so blessed to have 53 amazing and kind hearted grade 5 students. To give you
farewell through online meeting was never in our plan. However, we were still glad to be
able to see each other even though it was through our screens. Ibu Felice, Ibu Adri, Ibu
Kila, Ibu Feby, Ibu Indah, and Ibu Sharah will always remember the togetherness that we
have. Before you start a new adventure, we would like to give you some encouraging words
which come from our hearts. Check it out…

happiness.” – Ibu Kila.

“You are a very special person, and you should really know how I loved to be your teacher,
how fast the year did go. One thing I tried to teach you, to last your whole life through, is
to know that you are special, just because you are you! Good luck in sixth grade, I am very
proud of you” - Ibu Feby.

Grade 6

Dear the Lovely, Dynamic, and Active Grade 6,
Finally, the end of the academic year is here! None of us would have thought that we will be
having our last two months of togetherness by doing Home Learning. It was something new
and different from collaborating in learning at school. Shift happens! Everyone is learning
f rom each other. Due to the fact that we missed our last moments as a Primary students
at school, we missed the real interaction among people, we missed our fun laughter or
meet up at the cafeteria during lunch time, but we also had fun learning activities to end
the last theme. One of the special things was creating an e-Journal and having a virtual
farewell date. Through the e-Journal, we had our freedom in describing ourselves as grade
6 students, we created our own names that fit the characteristic of our classes, we made
comic about how to deal with the Covid-19, what to do next after we graduated, what kind
of attitudes and skills that are needed to prepare for the grade 7, and we did our speech
through video. On our last day, we even met via Zoom Conference to have a simple farewell
party. We wore the same outf it or added some attributes to make it more fun and discuss
everything. We realized that we lost lots of things during this pandemic, but hey, we still
own the voices to make everything best as we can, something beautiful to be remembered
before we are leaving the school. So here it is, special notes from Ibu Astrid, Ibu Endah, Ibu
Tary, Ibu Lyla, Ibu Ary and Ibu Wendy to all of you, to describe how grateful we are to have
you.

Farewell party time to celebrate our last day!

28

Dear Grade 6, all of us learned new things. It has really been a while that we are not seeing
each other at school and seeing each other online instead. We miss all the fun we had at
school. This year is something for us. Several things needed to be adjusted and we survived
the last of the semester! It has been a pleasant surprise to see you improving despite
the current situation and even getting the hang of it! We love the positive vibe that you
shared throughout this year and we are proud that we are there to assist and see you
grow. We also see that the bond between you and your f riends is also getting stronger
in terms of reminding one another about the assignments, being active in discussions
and understanding that it should be one speaker at a time. We could also see how each
of you have developed with your attitudes and skills, how you are more accepting of your
classmates and how creative you are in solving problems. It’s time now...for you to leave
the years of primary, in which we believe that each one of you has developed so much
throughout this time. We thank you for your energy, thoughts and creativity. It has been
our pleasure and privilege to watch you grow and learn day by day, be more skillful, more
fulf illed and nurtured each day with characters and values of life too. We also appreciate
your hard work and serious commitment to finish all the tasks and assignments, it was
such an amazing thing to see the results. Every day has been such an adventure and we
had so many cherished memories. You have taught us that learning is endless, and to look
from different perspectives.

The roads ahead of you may not be easy, there are challenges to overcome and goals to
pursue. Explore and don’t be af raid to make mistakes in learning, because mistakes make
learning happen. Believe in yourself that you have a bright future, you can do anything if
you set your mind to it. Just remember to always be true to yourself and be kind to others.
Also, remember that every choice and action will have consequences, so think and choose
wisely. Your journey with us might stop here, but above all it’s a new beginning of new
heights for you. We had so much fun, being your teachers and your second family. We are
proud of you already and looking forward to hearing many incredible things that you do
in the years to come. Congratulations, enjoy, and seize your moments. Last but not least,
thank you for teaching us the meaning of patience, the meaning of being creative and the
meaning of tolerance. We wish you the best of luck next year. Congratulations to all of you!
Keep shining, maximize your potential and beat the challenge with a positive life goal and
optimism! Rise and shine you guys! You are all ready to move on now, so face what’s ahead
of you, do your best and remember to be kind along the way! (WA)

Secondary School News

Grade 7 - Grade 12

English as a Second Language

by Mr Chris Thompson
Most people have heard of the Roman occupation of England, but very few are educated
on the events that were to follow and how the English language was born.
During the online home learning, the Grade 7 students were introduced to the history of
the English language; from its birth, to the major events leading up to and influencing how
the language is spoken and written in modern time.

During the first synchronous session, students watched snippets of different events, from
the Anglo-Saxon invasions up until the Norman Conquest of 1066, whilst looking out for
information to answer pre-introduced questions.

31

They then used their independent study time to watch a short video on ‘The History of
English’, which included Shakespeare’s influence, the new translation of the Bible, and
American English to name a few, while at the same time practicing their note-taking skills.
Their note-taking skills were then put to the test in the second synchronous session, where
they took part in a quiz hosted by the teacher.
Although we only scratched the surface of a complex academic subject, it has made the
students become aware of the history of the English language and how English has been
formed by a wide variety of influences.

Math in Distance Learning

by Devi Arendi
Starting f rom the middle of March, Sekolah Bogor Raya has conducted distance learning,
where we have delivered and conducted discussions with students from home. The
activities start in the morning and finish in the afternoon.
With the availability of several applications or websites online, distance learning has been
very possible to conduct. Teachers use online applications to conduct teaching and learning.
Even though we are not able to feel the same environment as in the usual classroom, it is
still possible for us to see students face-to-face and monitor their progress online.

As a mathematics teacher for grade 8, I usually ask students to read the material first
before they attend the meeting. It helps them to at least have an idea about the concept
that we are going to discuss during synchronous learning. In addition, the activities are
useful in encouraging them to have questions during the lesson and use the synchronous
time to discuss parts of the lesson that are quite challenging for them.

32

Besides the availability of having class discussions from home, we are also able to give
feedback to students using Google Classroom. On the website, students are able to turn in
their assignment within the time frame given. They can also check the feedback and mark
it themselves. Sometimes, to check students’ understanding towards a topic, I use Quizizz.
an application that enables us to see students’ quiz results quickly and the result can be
used as a consideration before starting the topic.

Grade 9 Maths

As everyone of us is facing the pandemic and have been affected by it, we started a new
normal, which is online home learning. It is not easy for both teachers and students,
because we are so used to the face-to-face interaction where we can easily read the
facial expression and body language. However, during the 6 weeks of online learning, we
managed to strengthen our mathematics knowledge and develop a new routine in class.

The class was cut into a 30 minute synchronous time. During the 30 minutes we learned
through the now famous “zoom”, where we got the chance to check in on everyone. I always
encouraged the students to turn their camera on, being able to see the students was also
important for my well being as a teacher.

We are currently discussing trigonometry, a new topic that 9th graders have never
discussed before. The lesson was delivered with the help of the whiteboard from Zoom or
using Geogebra. Geogebra is a math software where teachers can draw geometric shapes
as well as develop formulas and build graphs. The teacher also assigned videos through
edPuzzle. The video was accompanied with 3 - 5 simple questions as a quick assessment of
students’ understanding. The class evolved and got better each day as both students and
teachers got better in utilizing the available tools. For the assessment, we used Quizizz, a
website where students answer questions prepared by teachers. Taking Quizizz, students
could do it live or during their asynchronous time depending on the setting set and the
goal of the assessment. A combination of on-line and offline learning has helped students
to manage their time and also taught them to become better learners.

33

We may not see each other physically, but we take our lesson and learning personally. It is
becoming the teachers’ goal to always provide the best possible education for the students
wherever we are. We hope the pandemic will end soon, so that we can go back to school.
By then, we can go back with a new perspective, that we are all able to do what we have
never imagined before. Together we can!!

Grade 8 Biology

In grade 8 biology, the students learned about the human body system; respiratory,
excretory, and nutrition. In the Respiratory System, students researched on how the SARS
Coronavirus-2 infests respiratory organs, especially the lungs. This is important to fathom
with the current condition with the Covid-19 pandemic situation. In excretion, students
learned about kidneys; its function and treatment of kidneys’ diseases by dialysis. Kidneys
play an essential role in eliminating toxic metabolic wastes f rom our body, and students
learned how to maintain the kidney’s health by drinking adequate water. In nutrition,
students identified and discussed about nutrition and malnutrition. This discussion covered
on how to nourish the body by selecting nutrients consumed for suhoor and iftar since the
moslem students’ are fasting during Ramadhan amid the pandemic situation.

34

Grade 9 Physics

During the Online Home Learning, physics subject for grade nine was covered the topic
about Thermal Physics. The topic divided into three subtopics: (1) Simple kinetic molecular
model of matter; (2) Thermal properties and temperature; (3) Thermal processes. This topic
is the one f rom f ive topics of IGCSE Physics. We start the lesson f rom the microscopic
point of view, to see the three different states of matter, solids, liquids and gases, according
to their molecular model configuration. The understanding of molecular configuration is
important to see how the thermal energy is propagating or transferred on a substance/
matter, solid, liquids or gases. If there is a temperature difference on a matter/substance,
there will be heat transfer. The heat transfer process depends on properties such as specific
heat capacity and specific latent heat. Though the heat transfer could be different, but the
observed phenomena is the same: the object will expand. We observe the heat transfer
process through the physics simulation, one of the good one is PhET. The students did
virtual physics lab as well using Energy2D application. They observe the process when
some properties manipulated on the virtual lab application. From the observation, they
analyse and explain based on the concept what they learnt and try show it as a diagram.

35

Grade 10 Business Studies

Sekolah Bogor Raya is committed to giving the best learning experiences to the students
no matter what the circumstances are. This also applies to the current situation where the
Covid-19 Pandemic has reached Indonesia in general, affecting all aspects of our life. The
online home learning system has been introduced to all SBR students, allowing them to
study all school subjects without having to worry about the gathering and being involved
in crowds to stay healthy.

Business studies for Grade 10 mainly discuss the environmental and ethical issues in business
activities. Students comprehend the concept of environmental issues caused by business
activities as well as relate the present natural condition due to the rapid development of
business around us. Students were given several examples of various pollution induced by
business operations. Utilizing the Padlet apps for collaborating opinions and thought, the
teacher asked the students’ opinions about solutions that need to be taken anticipating such
predicaments arisen by business activities. Students were put into groups for discussion on
Zoom video conference software using the breakout-room feature to deliberate their ideas
about real cases provided by the teacher.

Another sub-topic for business studies for Grade 10 in Term 4 was ethical issues. These are
related to situations where social and/or cultural norms are incriminated to be violated
during business conduct. One clear example of an ethical issue is the sweat-shop practice
by numerous manufacturing companies. The practice has been known as common in
most countries, however, employing under-aged labor is an absolute violation of human
rights. Students came with different views about this matter. Some of them argued that it
would be considered f ine if they are helping his/her family. Some said that they are surely
against the practice. Nonetheless, the main issue of the sweat-shop practice is that the
company employs under-aged labor by implementing the same rules of working (working
hours, minimum salary, leave rights, etc.) as those set for common-aged labor. To shed
some enlightenment about the labor act implemented by certain countries’ authorities,
students were introduced to Act No. 13 the Year 2013 about labor in Indonesia and several
international regulations regarding employment. It was expected that the students would
have a global understanding of several ethical issues to be concerned by many businesses.

36

The assessment system set for business studies is the formative task, assigned at the end of
each meeting correlated to the discussed sub-topic. Students were asked to submit their
work to Google Classroom where the whole class conducted most of the asynchronous
learning activities such as indirect QA sessions, brain-storming some thought, and
reviewing some of the terms involved in the sub-topic.

Grade 7 Students’ Responses to the COVID 19 Pandemic
in Bahasa Indonesia OHL

Bahasa Indonesia class for Grade 7 has been conducted in a different way during the COVID
19 pandemic. We cannot meet face to face, but we still have effective-meetings during the
sessions using Zoom. The most challenging time was when the internet connection was
unstable. Sometimes the connection was interrupted and we had to create another new
link to continue the discussion. However, it did not stop us from having an effective class
in Bahasa Indonesia.
The most interesting topics we discussed were when we had sessions about Teks Laporan
Hasil Observasi on the COVID 19 pandemic during the previous weeks and Teks Prosedur
Cara Mencuci Tangan yang Benar Menurut WHO that was conducted this week. (https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=HChg7g6oPjE.)

37

In the f irst topic, the Grade 7 students had to do an observation on how the COVID 19
pandemic had spread around people’s lives, especially in Indonesia, Bogor, and in their
families. In the discussion, they expressed their concerns about the increased number
of victims and the situation in their lives lately. Besides, they also expressed their hopes
that the pandemic will go away soon because they miss the normal life, where they can
meet friends and do sports activities. In the next step, they had to write the result of the
observation in an observation report paragraph.
In the second topic, the students watched a video from youtube, about how to wash their
hands according to the World Health Organization. They had to take notes on what steps or
procedures they needed to do so that they could follow the correct procedures on washing
hands to avoid the spread of COVID 19.
In the next meeting, each student explained the procedure of washing hands correctly. By
following the procedures correctly, they knew that they took part in stopping the spread
of the COVID 19 pandemic.
Those two topics have led the students to be more aware of the situation that the world is
facing now, to reflect on their experiences in being a good citizen to respond to the needs
around them and to take part in stopping the spread of the COVID 19 pandemic by doing
simple things, such as washing their hands. (VY)

Fun learning using online platform in understanding
Civics lesson

When studying the material “Wawasan Nusantara”, the teacher presented it using video
media to students. This material was discussion material for face-to-face meetings for when
we had our synchronous learning. By using this strategy, the teacher gave the opportunity
for students to learn and understand the material before the discussion activities, so that
during the discussion activities, students had already learned the material and had an
understanding of the material being discussed.
Discussion activities are carried out using the Google classroom application. By using this
application, the teacher provides an opportunity for students to provide answers to some
questions given by the teacher. Then, the teacher interacts and checks students’ answers
directly, as well as giving responses to their answers. Through this activity, students also
have the opportunity to ask important points about their answers that need to be revised.

Other student activities for deeper understanding of topics were carried out by working on
quizzes using the Quizizz platform. This activity was to measure students’ understanding
of the material provided. In addition, by using Quizizz, students worked on problems with
fun media.
Students showed an enthusiastic attitude both during discussions and when working on
problems using Quizizz. Some quiz questions became discussion material to add students’
insights and understanding about Wawasan Nusantara.

IB Diploma Insights

Physics

One of the challenges of learning science from home, is the fact that we can not have
real practical activities in the laboratory, which as we know, are a crucial part to enhance
the concept itself. Therefore, in Physics, we tried to bring the practical activities home by
having a virtual lab activity. While learning the concept about gravitational f ield strength,
students of the grade 11 Diploma Program did a gravity force lab f rom phet simulation to
prove that the universal gravitational constant is 6.67 x 10-11 N m2 kg-2.
By having this virtual lab activity, students were able to practice their investigation skills
and choose the variables they wanted to use to get the results. This activity has helped the
students a lot in understanding the concept of gravitational field strength. Moreover, it
gave them a different type of activity while studying from home which engaged them in
the learning process.
It has been a challenging time for everyone, including teacher and students, however the
term has come to an end with great success. Despite all the difficulties and challenges, we
have grown and survived as people together.
Here’s hoping that the future will be brighter and that we will get to meet each other again
soon in a normal situation.

40

English

With respect to online home learning this term, teachers continue to do their best so
that students will not fall behind f rom the curriculum standards, and keep providing
opportunities to grow, so called pandemic pedagogy for some. Well-designed online
education can be just as effective as face-to-face instruction.

Currently, in language B grade 11DP, the teachers are bringing learning to life and making
it interesting to ease the boredom of the monotonous learning styles and to keep the
students’ spirit up amid the quarantine. The last few weeks, in English and Indonesian B,
students have been discussing the new current technological inventions and their impacts
in the future - 2070, a world that we wish for or 2070, a world that we regret. Remarkably,
the topics from cloning embryos, genetically modified organisms to arts have enthralled
the students to redefine what the terms actually means.

In Indonesia B, students initially were asked to give responses on their peers’ point of view
regarding a dystopian world using the Padlet online platform. This was to ignite their prior
knowledge on human ingenuity and encourage them to think critically and imaginatively
on what would happen to humanity in the future, even in the worst scenario of humankind.
Surprisingly, optimism was still kept high.

As IB courses are interdisciplinary studies, this term, the learning objectives were connected
with TOK (Theory of Knowledge) topic - Dystopian Literature. With enough background,
students were ready to write an essay about the future world through their eyes. To enhance
students’ speaking skills, a video discussion platform, flipgrid.com, was incorporated where
students could find and share their voices with their classmates.

41

Similarly in English B, the visual collaboration tool is trello.com in which students synergically
add information one after another to a stimulus based on the literary work they are reading
now - Animal Farm by George Orwell, another dystopian setting. This great application
allows students to keep scaffolding themselves until they reach a conclusion or a theme,
a moral message. Ability to infer and conclude is one of the skills that students should
master so that they are ready for the IBDP examination next year.
To wrap up the 2019 - 2020 academic year, let us embrace the school closure and this new
idea of distance learning with a BIG hug of gratitude and grace. “Out of difficulties grow
miracles,” by Jean de la Bruyère.

“We” Community
of Learners

Learning Together - with SBR Student

At this edition, we would like to congratulate
Florina for her achievement in writing at the
Literary Journal for Young Writers.

Reading and writing skills are very important.
People are required to be able to write contents,
journals and essays. Children who read tend to
do better at school and professionally. The rise
in technology means increased demands for
higher literacy. The growth of digital media as
a source of information has reduced the ability
of children to critically evaluate the information
they are exposed to.

Critical thinking skills
Critical thinking skills are crucial in helping students achieve more than a cursory
understanding of any topic and helps them form their own opinions. Reading requires a
person to think and process information in a way that watching television may not. The
more you read, the deeper your understanding becomes of what you are reading and its
application.

Improved Communication Skills
Improving your reading and writing skills also goes hand in hand with developing your
communication skills. The more you read and write, the more you broaden your vocabulary
and are able to articulate concepts accurately and more effectively to others. Increasing
your ability to communicate also helps make you a better worker or student.

More Opportunities
Studies show that people with advanced reading and writing skills have more opportunities
in school and professionally than those who do not develop these skills. Children who are
avid readers will often f ind school more appealing. Literary readers are more likely “to
engage in positive civic and individual activities--such as volunteering, attending sports or
cultural events, and exercising” than non-readers, according to the NEA study.

By CLARA FLORINA SUTANTO AGE 18, JAKARTA, INDONESIA

December: The news breaks out for the first time.

January: People start to take notice.

February: Fear and panic overtake the streets (and grocery stores, supermarkets,
pharmacies).

March: The world comes to a grinding halt, and everything goes cold. A virus has brought
humanity to its knees. We are not prepared.

Mid-March: I think about the milestones I’m missing. Senior year. Prom. Parties. Graduation.
Chilling with my f riends. Meeting up with other college-bound strangers I clicked with
over the internet. Saying goodbye to my teachers, my classmates, and my grandparents
who live two cities away. Asking them for their blessing as I head off to another country
for college. I’ll be studying economics, I’d say. Maybe minor in computer science, creative
writing, or sociology? I’m not sure yet, but it’s okay. There’s a whole world for me to explore.
Wish me luck!

April: I wake up and relive the same day over and over. I lift the screen of my computer and
surf the internet, a chamber of bad news after bad news after bad news. I’m not sure what
is real anymore. Headlines contradict each other; social media is a bloodbath. Colleges are
going online this fall. World leaders move to tighten quarantine procedures. Here are f ive
simple ways to open your own home bakery and have a little fun with your f ree time! My
phone dings with a notification: we are considering deferring enrollment until spring in
response to the crisis. Not fun.

It is easy to feel upset. Easier to feel annoyed about rules and lockdowns and being thrust
into an uncertain future blind.

It is hard to realize how privileged most of us are to have boredom as our number one
enemy.

44

Now: I wake up. Sometimes, I try out new breakfast recipes. On better days, I choose to do
something more challenging, like making bread. It’s tiring, but I enjoy the burn in my arms
as I wrestle with the dough across the counter. I dive back into the habit of writing stories,
a hobby I was forced to let go of when the junior year hit and left me perpetually exhausted.
I find movies for me and my siblings to watch together, video call my grandparents, and
learn the basics of programming. A new routine; unfamiliar, but welcome nonetheless.
I no longer think about lost milestones and missed opportunities. These little things may
not be as exciting as prom or a high school party, but they can be new milestones. Proof
that I was here, that I did not fade away with the blur of days and weeks and – oh, another
month? Maybe the bread will be edible this time.
There is always a silver lining. There is always something new to explore.
The world may have come to a standstill, but we must keep marching on.

Learning Together - with SBR Teachers

Ibu Aninda Rosalia (Ibu Anin) was born on November
29th, 1980. She is currently in the 3rd semester of the
Early Childhood Education Masters Program at Pelita
Harapan University. She has been working in Sekolah
Bogor Raya since 2012 and her current position is
Associate PYP Coordinator.
As an early childhood educator, she has had the
opportunity to give young children the skills they
need to make sense of the world, to build their self-
esteem, and to ensure they will be lifelong learners.
Therefore she likes working with children in Early
Childhood Education, as she sees them growing and
developing their knowledge and skills in many ways.
Some of the amazing experiences and achievements that she has as the teacher in SBR are
as follows:
- She played an important part of the culmination of the PYP learning journey to be one of
the PYP exhibition mentors (2017-2019).
- She shared her knowledge and experience as a source person for grade 2 students (2019)
about the less waste community, “Jelajah Minim Sampah”.
- Headed the committee for school events: 4th ECC 2016 & SBR EYP 2018.
- Participated in Mobil Pintar Programmes.
- Created a storybook for children, One Shiny Day, about one of the IB Learner Prof iles
(knowledgeable).

46

Ibu Anin feels that nothing makes her prouder as an educator than seeing the students
succeed, knowing that she has helped them acquire the skills they need for the future.
Her personal philosophy or mission in education is she believes that early years students will
learn best through developmentally appropriate practice. Therefore, all teaching practices
should be appropriate to each child’s age and developmental status, adjusted well to them
as unique individuals, and responsive to the social and cultural contexts in which they live.
Her personal motto is “accept who you are, respect each other, put your heart into your
surroundings, and value yourself as a human being”.

Children Story

Children’s story is a fascinating blend of simplicity and life lessons. Stories are probably
the best way to teach early years children about values, moral, and life skills without being
preachy. Through story, children will benef it not only their language prof iciency and
listening skills. Story will create a bond and enjoyment which helps them to engage with
the learning.

A children’s story that aims to develop children’s knowledge about one of the IB learner
profiles has been created by one of the SBR community members. Ibu Anin, PGK PYP
Coordinator Associate, creates a f riendly story of how to become a knowledgeable child.
The story built in an interesting farm setting and animal characters, aimed primarily for
PGK students, aged 2-6 years old. Ibu Anin has the opportunity to read the story to K3
students through a virtual meeting. The students were happy and they got the value from
the story through questions and answers session given by the teachers afterward. It was a
cherished moment to end the school year with a wonderful story.

47

Learning Together - with SBR Parents

Since last 31st January, the World Health Organization
(WHO) announced the pandemic situation caused
by coronavirus, Covid 19 to the world. As Indonesia is
one of the countries that has been affected by this
situation, the Indonesian government has made
detailed policies with the purpose of stopping the
spread of coronavirus.
One of the policies is about social distancing and
self-quarantine. Self- quarantine is not an easy thing
to do as it makes some people feel bored, and can
even cause depression because of the limitation to do
networking or socializing.
I would like to share how I and my family have handled
the self-quarantine in the hopes that our experience
can benefit others.
The f irst, as a mother of three children, who are studying at Sekolah Bogor Raya and have
been studying through online learning during these times, I help and guide them everyday
during the process of the online home learning. Especially in supporting my third child
who is in Grade 3 who needs help working with a computer. My second child, who is in
Grade 5, mostly does things independently and only sometimes needs my help during
recording her tasks, taking photos and submitting her works online. And for my first child,
as he is in Grade 7, he does his work independently.

48

The second activity during this quarantine is to concentrate in taking care of my business’
growth as the business gets affected by the pandemic situation too. I have to maintain the
daily business activities so the company and the brand that I have built still survives. That
is why it needs some strategies such as a system that is adaptive to the current situation so
the company can survive with its income. That is why I work online, however sometimes I
still need to visit the place to meet the workers, management and the other working team
members.

One example is the Shabugram Resto, a shabu shabu restaurant of which I am the co-
founder. It has been negatively impacted by our current situation, and sustained a very low
income as before the customers visited the restaurant regularly, but now, I and my team
have to think hard about f inding ways to make our products reach our customers. We use
an online selling strategy, home service delivery for 24 hours just to get a better income.

The other activity to fill in these quarantine days is pursue my hobby in sports and also in
music such as playing drums, singing and even playing the ”tik-tok” application, where
before the pandemic, I didn’t use the ”tik-tok” application. These activities are fun for me,
it helps me a lot to keep healthy in body and mind, and we can pass the time without
realising it.

Another activity that I also do during quarantine days is I often fill in sessions through
sharing knowledge and experience to others. For example, doing the Baksos Peace and
Love Bogor, a programme of sembako and donation for the children in orphanages or for
the families that are affected by the pandemic of Covid-19. It is done by an online system,
as well as offline with social distancing procedures. I have also gotten a chance to become
the presenter for sharing knowledge and experiences to students in colleges and to the
other entrepreneurs. I do these activities to support others by giving motivation and I am
happy also to promote my friends’ products through my social media.

I believe by working together, supporting and helping each other will give us positive
energy, support and motivation as together we will pass these diff icult moments.

So this is just my sharing as a mother at Sekolah Bogor Raya and a business owner that
is affected by the current pandemic. Let’s work harder together, pray to God that these
diff iculties shall pass, and we keep our body and mind healthy, safe and happy.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, eating healthy food remains an important part of
maintaining our health. While there are no specific foods that can help protect us from the
virus, a nutritious diet can boost our immune system or help us f ight off symptoms. We
may not be able to share meals with friends and loved ones, but there are lots of other ways
to eat well and support our health at this difficult time.

What is a healthy diet?
Eating a healthy diet is not about strict limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving
yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, improving
your health, and boosting your mood.
Healthy eating doesn’t have to be overly complicated. If you feel overwhelmed by all the
conflicting nutrition and diet advice out there, you’re not alone. It seems that for every
expert who tells you a certain food is good for you, you’ll find another saying exactly the
opposite. The truth is that while some specific foods or nutrients have been shown to have
a beneficial effect on mood, it’s your overall dietary pattern that is most important. The
cornerstone of a healthy diet should be to replace processed food with real food whenever
possible. Eating food that is as close as possible to the way nature made it can make a huge
difference to the way you think, look, and feel.
By using these simple tips, you can cut through the confusion and learn how to create—
and stick to—a tasty, varied, and nutritious diet that is as good for your mind as it is for your
body.

The fundamentals of healthy eating:
While some extreme diets may suggest otherwise, we all need a balance of protein, fat,
carbohydrates, f iber, vitamins, and minerals in our diets to sustain a healthy body. You
don’t need to eliminate certain categories of food from your diet, but rather select the
healthiest options f rom each category.

Protein gives you the energy to get up and go—and keep going—while also supporting
mood and cognitive function. Too much protein can be harmful to people with kidney
disease, but the latest research suggests that many of us need more high-quality protein,
especially as we age. That doesn’t mean you have to eat more animal products—a variety of
plant-based sources of protein each day can ensure your body gets all the essential protein
it needs.

Fat. Not all fat is the same. While bad fats can wreck your diet and increase your risk of
certain diseases, good fats protect your brain and heart. In fact, healthy fats—such as
omega-3s—are vital to your physical and emotional health. Including more healthy fat in
your diet can help improve your mood, boost your well-being, and even trim your waistline.
