Foreword

From SBR’s School Relation

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have just f inished an amazingly busy term with a great deal of success to celebrate! I
would like to thank the entire Sekolah Bogor Raya community for your patience, compassion,
and support throughout what has been a very unique first term.

I am continually impressed about the strength of the community here at Sekolah Bogor
Raya, and it often feels surreal that we are unable to be physically present at the school during
this time. We all miss the personal interactions that are so critical for social development.
But as we have such a strong community here at SBR, I have seen a tremendous amount of
support during this past term. I appreciate and value the many positive comments we have
had from parents about how we have led up to our online teaching and learning program.
Our teaching and non-teaching staff have worked tirelessly over the past term to ensure
that our student’s academic, emotional, spiritual, and physical development continues to
develop in this new context. We thank you so much for your support and encouragement
of what we are doing.

As we continue to improve our online home learning experience, we appreciate your
partnership and want to share our commitment to continuously expanding and evolving
our Online Home Learning(OHL) programs. Your feedback is critical for us, and as such, we
invite you to fill out a short survey which will allow us to identify ways to better support
the needs of our students and parents. The survey link can be found here. The three way
conferences held at the end of the term, although being held virtually, are also a great way
to communicate with the teachers to discuss your child’s progress with the online program.

We also want to make sure that we are providing additional non-academic support for our
community. We have dedicated counselors at every level to help ensure that the welfare
and wellbeing of our students is being looked after. We have also had the opportunity to
host guest speakers on our “Inspiring SBR” series our YouTube channel, as well as during
teacher professional development sessions, who have presented ways that we can increase
mindfulness, help talk to our children about COVID, caring for our pets, and even learning
life skills through cooking! New episodes come out every week, and we invite you to watch
by clicking here!

As we head into our f irst term break and beyond we would also like to encourage all
families to set time aside to focus on healthy activities to promote physical, emotional and
social wellbeing. Playing outside, starting a new exercise habit, playing board games and
social online games, and video chatting with friends and family are all great ways to stay
connected while still maintaining social distancing precautions.
On a f inal note, I would like to thank all our staff here at Sekolah Bogor Raya. Our response
to the current and ongoing challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic has very
much been a team effort, and I would like to thank every single member of staff for their
efforts to maintain a sense of consistency for our students and their families. We understand
that for all of our teachers and support staff, that this has been a stressful time. And we
thank our parent community too, for helping to ease this stress through your appreciation
and support.
I hope that all students and staff enjoy the term break as an opportunity to relax, switch off
from school for a bit, and focus on their own health and wellbeing.

Tips of the Month

Maria Regina, Playgroup & Kindergarten Principal

Tips Eating Healthy Food

In this pandemic situation, health is becoming one of the biggest concerns, not only for
adults but also for kids. Many parents are facing difficulties when it comes to their child’s
eating habits. In normal situations, they are able to ask the classroom teachers to help
them to persuade their child to eat vegetables or fruits at school. Since we are now having
online learning at home, we would like to give some tips for parents to help encourage
their children to adopt healthier eating habits.

1. Cooking activities
Children can be involved in preparing and cooking in the kitchen. To attract his/her interest,
invite your little one to shop for healthy food ingredients, and choose the type of healthy
food that you specify. Create cooking activities with your child. Introduce them to the
ingredients needed, and explain the benefits of each vegetable for our body’s wellbeing.

At home, invite him/her to wash fruit and vegetables, wash his/her hands, and help prepare.
Give praise if your little one can do all the tasks well.

2. Invite them to eat with family
Make dinner with family a habit. Inviting children to eat with family encourages children to
eat more healthy foods. As a parent, you need to be a role model so that your children want
to get used to eating healthy. In addition, creating a pleasant atmosphere at the dining
table makes children feel at home with family.

Keep in mind, the best way to educate
children to get used to eating healthy
foods can be started by doing
small things, for example by giving
encouragement to children by eating
healthy foods first.

outside, but you CAN control what
goes on inside.” – Unknown

K2 - Prep

K2

Time flies so fast!
The end of theme 1 has arrived. In this theme, K2 Students learned about “Who We Are”. We
learned about family. We had many fun activities; one of them was role-playing as daddy
or mommy. The students wore daddy or mommy’s clothes and pretended to do daddy or
mommy’s roles at home. We also discussed the activities that make us happy. We created
the diorama of “My Family” and presented it in f ront of the teachers and f riends during
the synchronous session. Students developed their critical thinking skills as they present
their family pictures and mention their family members’ names. They also developed their
communication skills as they use language to gather and communicate information by
mentioning each family member’s roles. During their presentation of the activity that
makes them happy, they also acknowledged that happiness could come f rom doing family
activities.
A huge thank you to parents for your support and cooperation during the online home
learning. Hopefully, we will achieve a better result in the next theme. Stay healthy, stay
happy, and stay safe. Have a great holiday for all of us!

5

K3

To support the theme and our second line of inquiry, “Ways to connect our ideas through
language,” the students learned to connect their ideas through different ways in predicting
the ending of the story, “The Three Little Pigs.” In this activity, students watched the
video about “The Three Little Pigs,” and they created the ending story according to their
imagination by drawing and coloring the picture that they made. After that, they explained
their drawing in f ront of their peers during the online learning session. During this activity,
the students had many imaginations in predicting the ending story. For example, they said,
“The Big Bad Wolf goes away and eats the sushi, so the three little pigs are saved.”, “Mama
Pig brings the stick, so the Big Bad Wolf got scared and went away.”, “The truck is coming,
and then the Big Bad Wolf goes with the truck to the jungle.” This activity also made the
students to be thinkers who can create and share ideas in creative ways. Children at this
age are very imaginative; teachers and parents can guide their imagination in positive
ways by having small discussions during family time or class discussion.

6

Prep

Online home learning might not be fun for some, but Prep students are brimming with
enthusiasm as soon as the day starts. Although we still cannot meet face-to-face, Covid-19
did not stop the students to wave good morning happily to their teachers and friends. They
are still sharing about their days at home eagerly or giggling heartily in the middle of the
synchronous learning sessions. Prep students have adapted really well to the system, and
thus making the best out of the worst condition we are having right now in the middle of
the pandemic.
The teachers are still distributing Learning Toolkits to support students learning at home.
We encourage the students to prepare the learning toolkit by themselves whenever they
need to use it for the synchronous learning session. This way, students can be taught to be
responsible for their own learning. We believe that their efforts, no matter how small, will
not go in vain and improve them to be their very best.
Prep students are still going strong with their 2nd theme, How We Organize Ourselves, in
which the students are learning about communities. They are learning about the meaning
and characteristics of a community, different roles in each part of the community, and
things we can do as members of the community. The students will have their chance to
research further about communities around them; be more aware of what they can do and
what they have to do as a responsible member of the community. Students are exposed
to the roles and responsibilities of different community f igures. They are being asked with
questions that are f illed with ‘what ifs..?’ to trigger their inquiry and thinking skills in making
conclusions and solutions to the present problems. Our aims are to be able to respect other
people, to embrace the difference of each community, and to be more independent.
We are looking forward to having fun learning with everyone!

Grade 1 - Grade 6

9 September 2020, Indonesia commemorates the 37th National Sports Day (Haornas). The
Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenpora RI) conveyed that
this year’s Haornas commemoration carries three main themes: sports science, sports
tourism, and sports industry. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the 37th Haornas will be
commemorated on a limited basis while still implementing health protocols.

How do our teachers and students respond to the importance of sports and physical
activities during this pandemic? There are some genuine thoughts, experiences, and ideas
shared by students and teachers in their classes.

Being able to communicate and share from different places and time zones is a blessing
during this pandemic. Throughout online learning, students have engaged with experts
through discussion and experiences. This time, Grade 3, 5, and 6had the chance to listen
to experiences from dedicated and passionate people. These experts came from all over;
Our community, different regions of Indonesia, and even some other countries. Sharing
experiences do not only communicate what people know. These experiences can have
meaningful messages that involve feelings, values, beliefs, and passion that will inspire
others! Enjoy the readings and keep active!

Highlight: Staying Active During the CoronaVirus Pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic can make
it challenging to maintain a physically
active lifestyle.
For all of us, students, parents, and staff,
regular physical activity is a must for
staying healthy!

Instead of just sitting around most of
the time, moderate-intensity physical
activity is associated with better
immune function. Regular physical activity can help reduce your feelings of stress and
anxiety (which many of us may be feeling in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic).

9

The importance of physical activity at home
3 Key Points:
• Physical activity and exercise can be effective treatment strategies for symptoms of

both depression and anxiety.
• Each day is a new opportunity to engage in physical activity and exercise that can bring

short and long-term benefits for mood, sleep, and physical health.
• Consistency and sustained motivation may be enhanced by peer support, family

support, or electronic platforms offering exercise programs.
• The benefits of physical activity and exercise have been demonstrated across the

lifespan. We are meant to move and many of our body’s systems work better when we
are consistently physically active.

Physical activities that can be done at home:
Physical activity and relaxation techniques can be valuable tools to help you remain calm
and continue to protect your health during this time.

WHO recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity
physical activity per week, or a combination of both. These recommendations can still be
achieved even at home, with no special equipment and limited space.

The following are some tips on how to stay active and reduce sedentary behaviour while at
home in self-quarantine:

Take short active breaks during the day
Short bouts of physical activity add up to the weekly recommendations.
You may use the suggested exercises below as inspiration to be active every day. Dancing,
playing with children, and performing domestic chores such as cleaning and gardening
are other means to stay active at home.

Follow an online exercise class
Take advantage of the wealth of online exercise classes. Many of these are f ree and can be
found on YouTube. If you have no experience performing these exercises, be cautious and
aware of your own limitations.

10

Walk
Even in small spaces, walking around or walking on the spot, can
help you remain active. If you have a call, stand or walk around
your home while you speak, instead of sitting down. If you decide
to go outside to walk or exercise, be sure to maintain at least a 2
meters distance from other people.
Stand up
Reduce your sedentary time by standing up whenever possible. Ideally, aim to interrupt
sitting and reclining time every 30 minutes. Consider setting up a standing desk by using a
high table or stacking a pile of books or other materials, to continue working while standing.
During sedentary leisure time prioritize cognitively stimulating activities, such as reading,
board games, and puzzles.
Eat Healthy Foods
For optimal health, it is also important to remember to eat healthily and stay hydrated.
WHO recommends drinking water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages. Limit or avoid
alcoholic beverages for adults and strictly avoid these in young people, and pregnant and
breastfeeding women, or for other health reasons. Ensure plenty of fruits and vegetables,
and limit the intake of salt, sugar, and fat.

11

We are all managing additional stress related to the growth of the COVID-19 pandemic and
its potential to threaten the health of ourselves, our families, and our communities. Please
consider using physical activity and exercise as a strategy to maintain health during this
stressful period.

Although many things feel beyond our control right now, we do have the ability to be
creative and to build physical activity and exercise into each of our days. We may even look
back on this difficult time as the turning point when we learned new ways to build our
emotional resilience and our physical health.

Expert Talks

Every Logo has Its Story
On Monday 15 September 2020, the grade 3
students had a sharing session with a guest
speaker related to our second theme How We
organize Ourselves, about the school’s logo.
The session was divided into two parts. The
first part was held in the morning, joined by
the 3C and 3D students, while the second part
was held in the afternoon with the 3A and 3B
students as the participants. The guest speaker

was our primary school principal, Ibu Henny Anggraeni.

The session was started by having an ice-breaker where the students asked to f ind an item
with the SBR logo on it. After the game, Ibu Henny explained about the SBR logo. She
explained about the history, the elements, and the meaning behind each part of the SBR
logo. The SBR logo consists of a logogram and logotype. The logograph of SBR consists of
a tree, a star, a boy, a girl with three upper case letters of SBR. The logotype of SBR consists
of the name of the school “Sekolah Bogor Raya ‘’ and the tagline “Learning Together,
Inspiring Success”.

12

The grade 3 students look excited about the session. They listened to the guest speaker
attentively. They showed their understanding by asking inquisitive questions. They even
could share their thoughts on the meaning of each part of the logo before the guest speaker
provided the answers and the explanations. At the end of the session, the students could
answer all the speaker’s review questions. It was the f irst time for the grade 3 students
to have a sharing session with a guest speaker. And they did it very well. We are looking
forward to having another great sharing session ahead.

When British Meets India

Grade 5 teachers and guest speakers

As part of our efforts to keep giving expert exposure to deepen the students’ understanding,
teachers in grade 5 held a webinar with the guest speakers f rom countries with different
government systems. The f irst speaker was Ms. Natalie Vining, our English teacher in
grades 5 and 6 who is a citizen of the United Kingdom, one of the best monarchy countries.
She graduated f rom Chester University Majored in Journalism and Creative Writing. The
second speaker was Mr. Vipin Phogat, who graduated f rom Maharshi Dayanand University
majored in history, and happens to be Ms. Natalie’s husband f rom India; India is a republic
country that has a president and also a prime minister as the country’s leader. Both of the
experts were explaining about the government system and histories of their country to
support the transdisciplinary theme “Where We Are in Place and Time”.

The History of United Kingdom and India

14

Our first expert, Natalie Vining, opened the discussion by showing a world map where the
British territory was colored red. By that, she explained that the British Empire was the
largest empire in history as it covered more than 22% of the earth’s landmass. She then
showed a picture of a very-well-known figure from the United Kingdom, which most of the
students recognized, Queen Elizabeth II. After the explanation from Ms. Natalie, it was Mr.
Vipin’s turn to explain India. He showed some interesting pictures as well as explanations
in his presentation. He shared about Rashtrapati Bhavan as the official residence of the
President of India and is the biggest president’s residence in the world. He also explained
about India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and how the people of India choose their
prime minister.

Grade 5 students responded with many interesting questions

“The webinar was incredible because it was so interesting to know some facts that I have
never known before”-- one of grade 5 students typed in his reflection. Indeed, the webinar
was very informative and gave new insights to the students. They were very interested to
know more about the United Kingdom and India as they asked the guest speakers various
interesting questions. Having Ms. Natalie and Mr. Vipin has helped the students to gain a
deeper understanding about the government systems in the world and their succession.
Thank you very much, Ms. Natalie and Mr. Vipin. (SN)

Expert Talks

“Breathe, darling! This is just a chapter, not your whole story” by S.C Laurie

Welcoming our special guest speakers!

Perhaps by reading a good quote could help us and
everyone to be more relaxed and realize that we
are not alone during this pandemic. Pandemic is
still going on, it’s been 6 months since all of us have
to stay at home and do the social distancing. It’s
never been easier for all of us, but at this moment,
we know that we have to accept and adapt with
this situation. Stay at home, currently is not always
about being at home and doing
nothing. Instead, we can do many
things that we haven’t thinked
much of before. Inspired by these
thoughts, we invited two special
guest speakers that have been so
productive during pandemic.

Two inspiring speakers

We were pleased to welcome Mas Bagas Pratondho
and Kakak Nailah Fatimah. We invited them in order
to gain more understanding on how people face
challenges in nowadays situations, during Covid-19
pandemic. Mas Bagas lives in Klaten Kakak Nailah
is a 9th grader student at SMPN 1 Bogor. It was an
interesting and inspiring moment to witness and
hear stories about their insightful ideas that came
out during a pandemic situation. Both of them
are people who were able to see the opportunities
behind the challenge.

16

Their contribution and action are inspiring us on how to create
opportunities during the pandemic situation

Here’s a little sneak peak about our sessions with them. It was a week after the Stay at
Home policy that’s been stated in Indonesia around March 2020, Mas Bagas started to
make face shields when he received his f riend’s offer, in Klaten. He was motivated when he
saw his relatives who work in the area of health and being empathetic because of realizing
the risk of them dealing with the Covid 19 patients. By making it at home and manually, he
decides to give it for free to people or institutions who need it. Without expecting anything
in return, who would have thought that the face shields are the most needed item at that
time. So, Mas Bagas kept on producing it with the other volunteers for months and he
believed that this simple act of kindness will bring much joy and happiness to other people
in need. At another place, Kakak Nailah also created something based on her hobby when
she was a little child. Kakak Nailah loves to draw doodles and she got an idea to put her
draw into a mask that can be used nowadays in practicing the new normal life during
Covid-19. She drew lots of motifs and put good messages through her masks. It was her
belief that people could also deliver good messages through the behaviors during stay at
home, and from her design as well when they are using her masks. Such a good experience
to meet them through Zoom!

One of the tips on how to conquer challenges!

17

These sessions have given us lots of insights on how to deal with challenges and how to
see the opportunities behind problems. We got an insight about how important it is to
maximize our potential. Challenges are everywhere and we need to have a look inside
ourselves to understand our biggest wants in overcoming it. Then, just try to do it first and
try to enjoy what we are doing! Along the way, we also learned that we might face new
problems, but never quit! Rather than focussing on the negative effect of the pandemic
that we could feel, such as boredness or fatigue, we learn to keep up our positive thoughts
and understand that these are also a good chance to learn something new. These are
also moments to contribute as well in many ways, as simple as doing a small act. At the
end, it’s all up to our decisions on how we will keep on dancing through this situation.
And this theme, we got hit by lots of facts about extraordinary small or big actions that
people do around the world. Again, we are not alone! Keep on shining! There are lots of
people who care for each other. There are lots of people who are always ready to do real
things. Nevertheless, never forget also, that kindness will always be the main key to make
a movement. It all started from good hearts and good thoughts! Thank you Mas Bagas
and kakak Nailah for teaching us about kindness, being principled, consistent, patient, and
being a person who walks the talk! (WA)

Messages from the expert!

Let’s Visiting The Classes

Grade 1

In theme 1, as mentioned in the previous edition, Grade 1 students explored how to maintain
their health. One of the components is doing physical exercise regularly. Students also
deepened their insight on the importance of physical exercise and activities regularly. They
believe that having physical activity will support in building muscles and strengthening
their body. It was also nice to hear that some of the physical exercises make them happy.
We concluded that physical exercise and activity are not only important for our body, but
also for our mind. “If we are healthy, so Corona Virus will not infect us. But we also need to
eat healthy food, wash our hands, and have enough rest to stay healthy.”, said the students.
During online learning, sometimes it is exhausting to sit a whole day in front of our gadgets.
So, we do stretching or movement between the learnings to refresh our body and mind.

18

During these weeks, we have a lot of interesting discussions under the central idea:
Understanding of matters and materials allow people to use it in their lives. Students
sharpen their observation skills since they need to observe many things around them, even
themselves. Some questions arose, such as: “What is human? Solid, liquid or gas?”, “Is a cloud
a gas?”. Students have enough room to voice out their thoughts and are encouraged to find
the answers. Furthermore, it was interesting to witness their enthusiasm in visual art class.
They made an amazing work by following Ibu Puji’s instruction. Students demonstrated
good adaptability with online learning.
We will discover more in the upcoming weeks. Students will observe the materials and the
reason people use certain materials for certain objects. Hopefully, they will develop natural
curiosity in finding out different purposes of material around them.

Physical Exercise can be done indoor or outdoor.

Grade 2

September is famous for the phrase Cheerful September. It becomes our prayer and wish for
this month to go well and be full of joy. The question now is what is going on in September
so that everyone can be happy? Well, actually on September 9 we celebrated the National
Sports Day (Haornas), also on September 16 our Hindu friends celebrate Galungan and
Kuningan Day.

19

Do you know that we can feel joy and happiness if we are always exercising? This is stated
also by Kenneth Cooper who said that “We do not stop exercising because we are old.
We become old because we stop exercising.” Exercise is a good means for everyone to
maintain a balanced life. The same thing was done by grade 2 students of Sekolah Bogor
Raya. Physical Education (PE) is one of the fun subjects that they have been waiting for
because they can express themselves physically, not only thinking, reading, and writing.

PE: Warming up

Kementerian Pemuda dan Olahraga (Kemenpora) Republik Indonesia set the theme for
the 2020 Haornas celebration, “Sport Science, Sport Tourism and Sport Industry”. Then, he
also reminded the public to continue doing exercise every day so their body will keep f it
in facing the Covid-19 pandemic. The same spirit was practiced by grade 2 SBR students
with Pak Yonathan (PE teacher). Students learn about some techniques to play fun games
using home materials. The game is done not just for play but has an impact on their health.
Besides that, the more exciting and interesting one is when the students need to compete
with their family members practicing the fun games. This really adds their enthusiasm and
motivation to participate in the teaching and learning process.

Fun Games using home materials

20

Racing with family members

Health is not always related to physical but also mind and heart (olah otak dan olah hati).
The meaning of Galungan and Kuningan Day celebrations is to unite spiritual strength
in order to get a clear mind and position to fight chaos. Thus, this process is not only for
cleansing the mind and heart but also can help to attain overall health both physically and
mentally. At last, to fulf ill the cheerful September, the second graders of SBR would like
to invite all of us to maintain the balance of our lives by doing exercise for our body, mind,
and heart. (DU)

Grade 3

What are the big challenges of staying and studying at home? Our grade 3 students have
shared their opinions with us. “I get bored Ibu”, “I feel lonely Pak”, “I miss my friends, my
teachers”, “I miss the school, Ibu”. They also shared the reasons behind their answers. They
feel bored because they cannot move and go anywhere f reely. We discussed it on our f irst
theme, Who We Are Where, we learned about the changing of our beliefs and culture in
this current situation. The students learned how important it is to stay healthy although
we stay at home most of the time. One way to maintain good health is by doing exercises
regularly.

We usually do our physical activities together with our f riends at school with the good
facilities provided by the school. Since we still cannot go to school, we are then wondering,
can we still have a fun exercise if we do it at home? How should we do the exercises? Won’t
it be diff icult to f ind equipment to do the exercise like what we usually do at school? Well,
we have answers to all those questions. Yes, it is always fun to do exercise wherever we are,
included inside our house. It is fun to know that we can use items that can be found easily

21

at home. The grade 3 students do physical activities by using clean socks, baskets, pillows,
and drink bottles that are f illed with water. We use these objects to exercise by following
our physical education teacher’s instructions and movements. These household items
combined with energetic movement and energetic music make the physical activities at
home feel very real.

Besides having some exercises to keep students feeling energetic and enthusiastic during
online learning, in this theme, How We Organize Ourselves, the students also have some
activities. The students learned about signs and symbols, and they engaged in games to
guess the company logos or national symbols. They also had a sharing session with an
expert visit who explained the meaning behind the school’s logo. Though we have a virtual
expert visit, the students showed their enthusiasm during the session and they can feel
what they are used to from being at school before. Furthermore, the students will get
more exciting activities in the following weeks. They are going to learn more about ISO
Signs where they are going to play the game “Guess the Sign” and also they are going to
learn about Sign Language, Morse Code, and Braille in which they are also going to create
the class code to make the communication effective during the online home learning. Not
only that, at the end of the theme, the students will also create a new sign needed in the
current situation. With all of these activities, hopefully, the students may feel excited and
embrace their learning. (TS & RR)

Stay Cool, Stay Energetic

Grade 4

Greetings from the Grade 4 Squad.

Home learning has been quite challenging physically as well as mentally, but the grade
4 students managed to do well every single day. We realize that in order to achieve great
results in our academics endeavor, we also need to be healthy in our mind, body, and soul.
As we all spend almost the majority of our time at home, we always make sure that we still
do a lot of exercises too. Most of the grade 4 students enjoy playing badminton, going for a
jog around the neighborhood, riding bikes with their f riends, swimming in the afternoon,
or dancing and doing movements to the music. The students have developed a new habit
of exercise to keep themselves f it and healthy especially during the pandemic.

22

Stay fit and active during quarantine is a must Do stretching and relax your muscle with yoga

Move your body and be healthy

Meanwhile in the classroom, we are in the middle of Theme 2: How The World Works. The
grade 4 students explore the layers of the Earth, how the rocks were formed, and conduct
an investigation regarding the movements of the tectonic plates. The grade 4 students
also do a project where they act as little scientists and research some facts related to the
Earth’s layer.

In the upcoming weeks, we are going to do more exploration in our Theme 2. The students
are going to learn about natural disasters, become news anchors, and create posters related
to the mitigation of a natural disaster.

23

Grade 5

“Waaaaalk, Ride Bicycles, Dance! “–shouted grade 5 when we ask them what are their
tips to keep doing physical exercise during this pandemic.

24

Sports or doing physical exercise has known to have a clear link to our health and immune
system. Therefore, although we are at home during this pandemic and we are doing most
of our work in front of the screen, we should try to include sport in our daily lives, but how?
Well, it turns out students have a lot of fascinating yet doable ideas to incorporate sport in
their daily pandemic lives. Here are some of their mentioned ideas:

WALK TO GET TO PLACES
Yup, the simplest exercise of all, is to walk. Students suggested that we should walk or jog
around our neighborhood during our free time. Some students even said that they allow
themselves to walk up and down the stairs to take books, water, snacks, and go to the toilet
just to ensure that they make a movement during busy hours.

STRENGHT-TRAINING
What is that? It means that we do weightlifting using exercise equipment or household
items such as water-filled bottles, textbooks, canned goods, or milk jugs. Simple right?
Nonetheless, it is beneficial for our health and also it reduces the negative effects of stress
and anxiety.

RIDE BICYCLES
There’s a certain euphoria of people using bicycles now. The selling of bicycles has tripled
during this pandemic and the news even stated that it is the second-highest selling after
web cameras this year. It does have a clear reason of course since the world needs to
exercise and also need a means of transportation that doesn’t involve you sharing a closed
room with anybody. In addition, the students add up some tips for us to use masks and face
shields during bicycling around the neighborhood.

DO DANCES
Our school does some morning exercise during circle time, sometimes we also dance along
with the music together. It really helps us to set up the mood and of course, it gets us excited
to start the online learning. It gets funny also sometimes that when the music is laggy,
different students do different movements as they listen to the music timing differently.
Those are some of grade five’s ideas but there many more on the pad that they filled, you
may check out the pictures attached. Lastly, how we see this pandemic and how we react
to it definitely will affect the result of our physical health and mental state. Each day that
we face it with happiness and integrating sport in our daily lives will surely be beneficial for
our well being and physical health. (EPS)

25

Grade 6

Here we are, still having our online learning since July 2020 and we definitely miss our
school, our f riends, and outdoor activities. We are focusing our learning in discussing the
challenges that people face nowadays. As an exposure, we analyzed those challenges from
perspectives of various roles in society, such as parents, children, students, and workers.
We came up with an understanding that everyone faces challenges. Behind challenges lie
opportunities to adapt to the situation and to sum up our best behavior in responding to
those challenges, or what we called as problems.

One interesting fact during this learning adventure was that we shared our real-life
experience as a child and a student that has to be at home for uncertainty. How do we feel
to deal with uncertainty during a pandemic? We have shared our feelings during class
discussions and while f inishing our narrative writing. We came out with one same thought
that it is okay not to be okay. It is acceptable to feel sad, anxious, worried, and exhausted.
We have learned that the important thing lies in our own awareness. Thank God that all of
us are aware of those kinds of negative feelings. Behind those feelings, we were also able to
see many things that we can do as opportunities to create the right solutions to overcome
our challenges.

Our regular exercise with Mr.Bryan

On September 9th, 2020 we celebrated the National Sports Day (Hari Olahraga Nasional).
As part of our findings, we understood well about the importance of maintaining physical
activities while staying at home. Sports has become one of the important routines that we
can do to maintain our physical and psychological health. While staying at home, we can
try our best to be productive every day by doing exercise at least for 30 minutes. We have
our regular P.E lesson with Mr.Bryan. We did our exercise drills like Lateral Side Steps, Three
Cones Drill, Zigzag Forward, Cross Behind, One In One Out movements.

26

Exercise anytime using home tools at home

From the class discussions, we made up this one conclusion that having exercise regularly
can lead to better sleep, it releases serotonin and endorphins which are great for our mood,
and it can help release the tightness of our shoulder or neck which often come with stress
and anxiety. So, life is about balancing every aspect of our life, just keep up with it! Let’s
create opportunities that could improve our quality in education, physical and psychological
health! Those are our sum up for these weeks. So much fun in it! We are surely going to
have a big project before we end this theme and have our term 1 break in October. Until
then, see you! (WA)

Professional Learning Community:
Mindfulness , A Way to Maintain Positive Well-Being

In this pandemic situation when we all face uncertainty, confusion and fear, it would be
easier for all of us to feel negative, stressful and anxious. With the limitation of online
interaction, people need to adjust their life system with all the new demands. But for sure,
we can not detach humans from humanity whatever the circumstances are, humans seek
for balance and tranquility in their life, we want to enjoy and put meaning into our life, so by
accepting and embracing the situation we can bring a positive impact to our surroundings.

The need of balance also applies to the teachers, as they carry on the role of educators
that bring influence to the students. Here, SBR secondary school held an Introduction
to Mindfulness Session for Teachers on Friday/ September 18th, 2020. SBR welcomed Ibu
Rusiati Yo S.Psi, Mpd, a Mindfulness practitioner and teacher, also a modul developer and
writer for SEL (Social Emotional Learning) on Guru Penggerak Program in KEMDIKBUD.

It is hoped that by knowing more about mindfulness, our teachers can apply some
strategies of mindfulness in their teaching to help the students feel more relaxed, improve
their concentration in studying and improve their self-esteem and well being.

Ibu Rusi introduced to the teachers the concept of Mindfulness which is the awareness
that arises when we pay attention on purpose in the present moment with curiosity and
kindness. In this session, we learnt how to not judge ourselves and others easily, be kind
to ourselves, let ourselves have a break and not give ourselves more pressure. Nowadays,
Mindfulness has been the best program of well being because the activity itself helps
build attention, emotional regulation and related capacity that underline a range of social
emotional academic skills.

Mindfulness guides us to be fully present and aware of our current state as well as to give
out the most appropriate response to any circumstances. These Mindfulness activities are
not just about us being stood still and doing nothing. On the other hand, this is how you do
what you do and that is why we can do Mindfulness during our daily activities. We can do
it during our reading time, eating time, prayer time or simply when we walk to our office
or school in the morning. You may start f rom a basic practise such as regulating your
breathing and activating your senses.

28

Calmly breathing and focusing on it, relax and enjoy every breath that you take or just
simply enjoy the pretty flowers during your morning walk, the fragrance, the colors, the
shapes. All of these simple activities can be your practise to Mindfulness.
When we are fully aware of our current state and taking our time to put meaning in our life,
we become to understand our purpose in life, we become demandless and more grateful
for who we are.

Best Buddies One-to-One Friendship Activity

What are Best Buddies and why One-to-One Friendship?
Before we introduce you to what is One-to-One Friendship, let’s find out more about why
Best Buddies as an international nonprofit organization that focuses on people with IDD
(Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities), is one of our major programs.

Best Buddies’ mission is to be a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for
one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive
living for individuals with IDD to end their social, physical, and economic isolation. Best
Buddies’ vision is to:
Help people with IDD to successfully integrate into schools and workplaces.
Educate students in secondary school, college students, community members, corporations,
and employers about the emotional, functional, and natural needs and abilities of people
with IDD.

As young people in SBR secondary school community, Best Buddies’ off icers and our
members want to share the awareness about IDD people and be part of their life as friends
that support each other.

Our One-to-One Friendship Activity
One-to-one f riendships is a volunteer program that aims to support one of our four key
mission pillars by building friendships between people with and without intellectual
developmental disabilities (IDD). Through this, we aim to break through social barriers
in order to give our buddies social and emotional support by mutually sharing interests,
experiences, and activities.

IDuring this time of pandemic, we weren’t able to do what we did last year, so instead,
we came up with a way to enhance our existing programs. This program will last for the
entire academic year. During this program, Best Buddies members will have the chance to
socialize with our friends from SLB through texting them via Whatsapp.

Student Leadership Club – Cooking Club
Supervisor – Mr. Chris England

This academic year, SBR decided to implement a new program named Student Leadership
Clubs (SLC). SLC was designed to give students the opportunity to develop their character,
SBR Core Values, and their leadership skills. Additionally, through the activities decided
upon and carried out by themselves, SBR students undoubtedly sharpen the critical
thinking, problem-solving skills, and communication and collaboration skills.
One of the very first responsibilities of the students challenged them to form the clubs
based on their interests and hobbies. Many clubs were formed spanning a wide variety of
curiosities, but one club proved to be extra popular: The Cooking Club. The initial number
of students wanting to join the Cooking Club was so large, SBR decided to split it into three
separate clubs to make it more manageable for the students and the volunteer supervisors
Mr. Chris, Ibu Shinta, and Ibu Endang.
In Mr. Chris’ Cooking Club, the f irst order of business was to elect three leadership positions
to head the club. The result of the election led to the very f irst cabinet of Mr. Chris’ Cooking
Club comprised of some of our younger students undeniably giving them very favorable
circumstances to hone their leadership skills. Justin Djapa (7C) was named as the Head
Chef, Livia Budiman (7A) served as Sous Chef, and Justin Wong (8A) acted as Chef de partie.
These three students have shown tremendous courage in taking on these roles and have
done an excellent job guiding their fellow chefs and ensuring all members have a voice and
are equally represented and respected.

33

Based on a group consensus, the chefs decided they wanted more practice in the kitchen
that not only was fun, but also improved basic cooking techniques. Their first assignment
was to cook omelets; a simple yet technically sophisticated dish. Who knew an omelet could
look so many different ways and be equally delicious every time? The students’ curiosity
of ingredients took center stage and churned out some delicious and colorful egg dishes.
The next kitchen endeavor challenged the students to create a dish with a theme based on
Indonesia’s Independence Day. Creativity really soared here and the chefs produced many
of Indonesia’s traditional foods and snacks. One chef even made nasi goreng (Indonesian
f ried rice) two ways and plated it to look like Indonesia’s national flag!

In addition to themes, the chefs also decided to challenge themselves by cooking under
pressure. One of their assignments called for them to cook any dish they could using ten or
less ingredients. Aside from producing more yummy dishes, the chefs truly demonstrated
determination and diligence. These qualities along with others were precisely the goal SBR
set forth with the creation of Student Leadership Clubs. As the term comes to a close, the
students will have the option to switch clubs to explore new areas of interest or remain
steadfast in their desire to develop their inner chefs. Either way, Mr. Chris’ Cooking Club
has and will continue to successfully build students’ confidence in themselves and their
leadership qualities and skills.

A Bite For All

Food insecurity is a chronic global issue and it displays inherent dangers to the wellbeing
of citizens worldwide. According to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Indonesia, access
to food is uneven due to poverty and lack of infrastructure. Hence, 19.4 million Indonesian
citizens are undernourished, and approximately 37% of Indonesian children who are under
5 years of age are stunted. This was before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic has had devastating effects on various aspects, not only the material impact
on the country’s economy, but most importantly, the citizens’ wellbeing. Middle to low
income families struggle everyday to make ends meet and to provide sustenance to their
family members. There are newly impoverished families appearing every single day.

A Bite-for-All was founded to help achieve the second Sustainable Development Goal, which
is, “End Hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable
agriculture.” A Bite-for-All aims to alleviate food insecurity and raise public awareness,
starting with the communities around Bogor. Our goal is to provide assistance to citizens
who are unable to meet dietary requirements, especially those who were greatly affected
by the global COVID-19 pandemic, through advocacy and making donations in the form of
food or monetary donations.

Future Events:

Food distribution
World Food Day (October 16) : celebrating the founding of the Food and Agriculture
Organization by the United Nations in 1945. A Bite-for-All plans on holding a few competitions
(including food photography and a food TikTok competition) within the SBR community, to
draw attention to FAO as well as issues related to hunger, to promote awareness and action
for those who suffer f rom food insecurity.

A Bite-for-All market : A pop-up market open only to the less fortunate, selling staple food
and basic cooking ingredients for only 15-20% of its original price.

Sustainable Agriculture Trip
(after the pandemic) Trip to a local sustainable farm for an introduction to sustainable
agriculture, a tour around the farm, small volunteer work, and to essentially help promote
the farm and the importance of sustainable agriculture.

(during the pandemic) Instead of visiting the farm, students will receive a virtual tutorial
from a local sustainable farm or SBR’s own Hydroponics Club

35

We are currently fundraising for our very f irst food distribution through selling a few
products on our Instagram account.
A Bite-for-All also aims to inspire the SBR community to take part in the f ight against
global hunger. We hope that through our enthusiasm, we will be able to motivate students
and staff to contribute more to society and help those in need.

SBR - Secondary Professional Learning Community
From-For-and-By Teachers to Escalate Competitive Advantage

Sekolah Bogor Raya always commits to ensuring all students to keep studying without any
significant changes. The transition from offline learning to online learning has been running
smoothly thanks to the readiness of all the teachers and supporting staff in technological
virtuosity. Moreover, it is enhanced by the use of enormous online platforms to foster the
21st-century learning paradigm.

Figure 1. Framework for 21st-century learning

Professional development is a must for teachers as education is indeed an ever-growing and
ever-changing f ield. Teachers are demanded to improve their teaching styles, techniques,
as well as their familiarity with technologies to support their teaching activities. Ultimately,
this improvement will create an innovative education for students to prepare them to face
the dynamic and globalized world.
Sekolah Bogor Raya, as a prominent educational institution, believes that in order to improve
the quality of education, it is a compulsory thing to improve the quality of its human capital.
Sekolah Bogor Raya - Secondary has been conducting a Professional Learning Community
Program, a series of Professional Development events to ensure the advancement of
educators’ mastery of technologies to support their teaching practices. The program is a
From-For-and-By Teachers based, allowing peer-sharing among colleagues about new and
beneficial technologies to be implemented in the classrooms.
There have been many platforms explored and implemented. Some of them have been
fully utilized by teachers in the classrooms while some others turn out to be very helpful in
equipping the SBR Online Home Learning activities.

1. Exam.net
Exam.net is a tool that helps teachers to carry out digital exams with their students.
Teachers can easily create an exam, or use an existing exam, and give their students access
to a simple and secure digital exam space with an exam key.
Some notable things about Exam.net which differentiate it from other platforms include:
• It is free to use (up to December 2020);
• It is easy to export students’ essays and answers (into many types of file formats);
• It is quick and easy for teachers to create a new exam (a few clicks and uploading);
• It provides the integration of Desmos and GeoGebra for MATH-related exams;
• It can be run in any browser and from any computer or tablet device;
• Students do not need to register to exam.net for an exam (students only need to have

the exam code)

Samples of Test Conducted using Exam.net

One of the great features of Exam.net is the Safe Exam Browser. It is a web browser
environment to carry out e-assessments safely. The software turns any computer
temporarily into a secure workstation. It controls access to resources like system functions,
other websites, and applications and prevents unauthorized resources being used during
an exam.
Exam.net has been fully utilized by teachers to conduct the End of Term 1 Examination for
all subjects. The live surveillance by the teachers was conducted during the exam to ensure
the reliability of the exam and the authentic results from the students.

2. ManageBac
ManageBac is an online planning, assessment, and reporting platform for the IB Diploma
Program at Sekolah Bogor Raya - Secondary. It provides a unif ied system on a mobile-ready
interface. It covers the management of curriculum planning, comprehensive grade-book,
and report card for students, students portfolios, as well as the seamless tracking of IB
components including CAS, EE, IA (for Science subjects), and TOK.
Sekolah Bogor Raya has been implementing Managebac for around 2 years as the main
Learning Management System for all IBDP students. The system provides a more efficient
alternative to paper forms, Word docs on shared drives, and Excel spreadsheets. Students
are able to submit their tasks and assignments by simply uploading the works to Managebac
where then the teacher will be able to conduct the annotation and grading without leaving
the platform.
ManageBac’s aim is to enhance eff iciency in education globally. It provides better curriculum
building tools and visible analytics for teachers and administrators, easy access to student
works, unit and class calendars and reporting from parents’ and students’ portals, as well
as customizable project-based learning and service learning tracking for students.

6. Kialo
Recommended by UNESCO as one of the online tools for remote learning, Kialo has
established itself as the only debate platform for public and educational purposes. To help
the teachers in shaping students’ perspectives and their ability to convey their ideas and
opinions, Kialo has determined to engage students in conducting focused discussions. It
also helps students to filter all the noise which they usually encounter in social media. As
their main tagline “A debate platform powered by reason”, Kialo gives multiple benef its
such as:
1. Map discussions which enable students to look at the complex issues more clearly,
2. Easy to set up and to invite students in joining the discussion
3. Arguments can be rated based on their impacts
4. Switching perspectives feature which enables students to see how the other side thinks
5. Collaborative discussion without disrupting the main issue
6. Changes of the statements can be reviewed and caught up quickly

7. Screencastify
This teaching tool comes in handy at this particular time, in which the pandemic situation
has caused us to have an online home learning. It is a Chrome extension that records
everything on the screen while teaching or giving a presentation: record - edit- share. So,
it is a virtual classroom video where students can learn at their own pace by rewatching it.
Some of the benefits of Screencastify used in the classroom are for:
1. Instructional videos
2. Narrating slideshows
3. Dubbing a video
4. Giving a speech or performance
5. Practicing fluency
6. Providing oral feedback while annotating

8. Google Hangout
There are times when students need an immediate response during their asynchronous
lesson. Such time can be critical since any support given to students can affect their working
progress. Google Hangout can be used as one of the medium options for student-teachers
communication during the asynchronous time. Through Hangout, students can chat with
their teachers, or request for a Hangout call where they can screen share their work easily.

IB Diploma Insights

As we approach the end of term 1 of this academic year, it is time to reflect on what we
have achieved thus far, the challenges we have faced, and the course corrections we need
to make in the coming term.

The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to ravage the nation and the world and the situation
continues to be volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. Given these circumstances,
it is a matter of great pride that the teaching-learning process in the IBDP program at SBR
has continued almost seamlessly; in fact it has gathered steam as everyone has rapidly
upskilled themselves to be more effective learners/facilitators. Both students and teachers
have gone above and beyond in their quest for excellence - be it in terms of academic
rigour or extracurricular activities - our students have led from the front.

This term also saw us conduct our first ever fully online end-of-term assessment. The
assessments went off smoothly and with minimal technical difficulties. It is a credit to our
students, their spirit of cooperation, and their sense of ownership of their own learning
journeys that this was made possible. The high level of responsibility and integrity in
our student body was evident from the fact that there have been no cases of suspected
plagiarism in any exam. We as teachers feel a great sense of pride when we reflect on the
upstanding and responsible students we have helped train.

As the DP2 cohort gets ready to go into their final phases for IA feedback, internally assessed
component submissions, and extended essays, the DP1 cohort takes its f irst tentative
steps towards starting these journeys. The coming term will see them take on more tasks
designed to build the required skills of critical thinking and academic writing.

Looking ahead, we must brace ourselves for whatever circumstances this rapidly evolving
pandemic might bring. To that end, we have instituted much closer monitoring of learning
objectives within the IB program. We are also closely following the information being
disseminated by the IB organisation and adapting our processes to reflect the changes
immediately. To help our students cope, we have also started individually assisting DP2
students to ensure that they do not feel overwhelmed or stressed.

We look forward to continuing the momentum and energy of this term into the second
term of the year. As always, we will strive towards excellence in all that we do, and we will
continue to grow and improve ourselves.
