Welcome

to the 15th Annual
IGSOSANA Convention

We’re not Delegates or people with any interest be it political or otherwise but we’re brothers
and sisters from the formative years at our Alma Mater- Ibadan Grammar School, Ibadan Nigeria.
It is with a resounding pleasure and height of happiness to welcome each one of us specially to our
15th Annual Ibadan Grammar School Old Students Association North America ReUnion - Baltimore
MD 2022.

I’m fully aware that most of us look forward to the Convention yearly and this year’s will not be an
exception. It is the time that we see ourselves giving back and at the same time reuniting with
classmates and schoolmates we have not heard from years even decades - it’s the time to feel the
nostalgia of being a teenager and high schoolers all at the same time.

The Baltimore Convention Local Organizing Committee members having put a lot of their precious
time in planning and bringing this meeting to fruition believing that we have done our best to
ensure that all our guests are comfortably settled in for the camaraderie we’re all looking forward to
in the next three days in Baltimore Maryland.

Over the years, the common denominator has always been Ibadan Grammar School - whether you
were at Alekusho Agbeni, Oke Are or Molete- we all look up to those 5-6 years we spent that molded
us to young adults.

We have packaged into these three days fun at various levels viz tour of the city of Baltimore which
includes the Inner Harbor, Cruise, Aquarium and some museums, while minding the business aspect
of our association and not losing focus on our fundraising activities combined with gala night and
recognition of people that have made their marks both in our youthful days at school and those that
have been contributing in no small way for the continuous reunions both at home and in diaspora.
We will round up by giving thanks to God at All Saints Anglican Church on Sunday before departing
to our various homes. I wish you all happy deliberations.

tenure of the National Executive Committee (EXCO) led by Professor (Ven) K. T. Jayeoba came to an end and on
the same day a new National Executive Committee led by David Oladimeji O. Mako was elected; we are greatful
to Professor Ven. K.T. Jaiyeoba and his Exco members for a job well done and we congratulate Mr. Dimeji and his

REMEMBERING

THE VENO

V enerable Olumuyiwa Oyewole was a suc-
cessful banker, property developer and,
distinguished person. It is enough to be
distinguished in one profession; it is rare
to do so in two, unrelated professions.
Such is the career of Olumuyiwa Oyewole
that managed to do this.

After the conclusion of his secondary education at Ibadan Gram-
mar School (Olubadan House), Oyewole started out in the financial
industry as Accounts Clerk with the old Cooperative Bank Limited
at Ibadan and later as a Senior Clerk at the London Branch of the
defunct National Bank of Nigeria Limited. He acquired his higher
educational qualifications from South West London College and the
Rivers State University of Science and Technology. A seasoned bank-
er, he ran the gamut from clerk to Managing Director in the bank-
ing sector. He was at various times Deputy Head of Department
and Assistant General Manager (Finance) with the Société Generale
Bank Limited; Head of Operations at Republic Bank Limited; Gen-
eral Manager at Group Merchant Bank and eventually Managing
Director, United Commercial Bank. He moved into the mortgage
industry and became the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
of M&N Building Society Limited. In this latter sector, he served as
Consultant and Project Coordinator for C & C Construction Company
Limited responsible for the storied Banana Island Project in Lagos,
Managing Director of Ocean Parade Limited and Marketing Man-
ager for Eko Akete Housing Estate Scheme and Eko Atlantic City
Development Scheme, all significant components of a burgeoning
property development sector affecting the lives and times and
changing the landscape of Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos.

His deep spiritual commitments and engagements with his Angli-
can background eventually led him to the priesthood, becoming,
first, a Deacon, and later, an ordained minister in the Nigeria Prov-
ince of the Anglican Church Worldwide in 2005. He retired in March
2018 from the Vicariate of the Anglican Church for All Nations, Vic-
toria Island, Lagos. This is merely the crown of a life of service to his
church, the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos, and the wider
Christian community of which it is a part.

His philanthropic activities are legendary, and our alma mater has
been the recipient of a lot of his generosity both before and since he
assumed office as the National President of the Ibadan Grammar
Old Students Association (IGSOSA).

For his professional accomplishments and the dedication of his pro-
fessional competence to the service of his professions, his commu-
nity, our school, and the wider world, IGSOSANA honored Venerable
Olumuyiwa Oyewole with the Chief Ayo Labiyi Award for Distin-
guished Professional Accomplishments in September 1, 2018.

A GREAT FRIEND AND
SUPPORTER OF IGSOSANA

“Grieve not for me.
Remember the best times,

the laughter, the song.
The good life I lived
while I was strong.

Continue my heritage,
I’m counting on you.

Keep smiling and surely
the sun will shine through.

My mind is at ease,
my soul is at rest.
Remembering all,

how I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions,
no matter how small.
Go on with your life,

don’t worry about falls.
I miss you all dearly,
so keep up your chin.
Until the day comes
we’re together again.”

BALTIMORE
A HISTORY

When Maryland was one of the original British colonies in the early 1700s, Baltimore was the fourth largest city.
Even at its founding, African-Americans had a major presence in the city. Our presence was seen in the Revolution-
ary War fought in and around Baltimore. Due to the British first offering freedom to escaped slaves, African-Amer-
icans fought on both sides of this war and remained in the city afterward.

Perhaps the most remarkable characteristic of Baltimore was that it had so many Black churches beginning in the late 1700s. Hampton
Estate, just north of Baltimore, has a Georgian Manor house, gardens, tobacco plantation and former slave quarters. By the late 1750s,
Hampton Estate extended to more than 10,000 acres, plus an ironworks.
Since the 1800s, African American watermen, also known as “Black Jacks”, have been fishing for seafood in the Chesapeake Bay. Most of
them lived near Baltimore. At a time when many of the nation’s Black men and women were still enslaved, many Black Jacks were given
“Seaman Protection Certificates.” That gave them status as American citizens and allowed them to earn legal wages. Throughout the 19th
and 20th centuries, these fishermen caught and processed seafood like oysters and crab alongside their white counterparts.
While slavery was legal in the city, free African-Americans developed churches and other organizations to assist their persecuted brothers
and sisters. In fact, there was an order of magnitude more free persons of color in Baltimore than in any other Southern city. The African
Methodist Episcopal Conference took place in the city in 1827, and the famous St. James Episcopal Church was founded in 1827. The first
Black private school for girls, the Oblate Order, was founded in 1829.
Frederick Douglass worked the docks of Fells Point in East Baltimore and Harriet Tubman passed through many times on her sojourns.
By 1850, there were over 25,000 free persons of color in the city, comprising 15% of the city population. They set up 30 to 40 mutual aid
societies for business, fraternity, welfare, and insurance. After the Civil War, African-Americans opened Centenary Biblical Institute, which
became a hub of African-American culture and activism. Today, it has become Morgan State University.
In 1885, the Baltimore Mutual United Brotherhood of Liberty was founded. This organization used the courts to pursue civil rights for Afri-
can-Americans. In 1892, the Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper was founded. It is one of the longest-standing black newspapers and is
still published. Soon afterward, Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School and Frederick Douglass High Schools were formed.
