WELCOME
TO THE 14TH ANNUAL
IGSOSANA CONVENTION
It is with respect and honour that you are welcome to the 14th Annual Convention of Ibadan
Grammar School Old Students' Association of North America (IGSOSANA). All our members that
reside here in the Dallas /Fort Worth Metroplex also join me in welcoming you to this convention.
As you will notice, you will see why people say that everything is big InTexas. I remember everyone
at Raleigh convention saying, we are going to the “big D” in 2020. We are glad you are here now!
Our association has been growing every year since inception to this very moment, thank you to the
men and women that have stepped forward to take leadership positions within the association.
I will also have to recognize the few visionaries that started Ibadan Grammar School Old Students'
Association of North America. It is evident that our school has always produced visionaries. We
are trained to always give back to our communities and generations to come. This is what has set
Ibadan Grammar apart from all secondary schools in our native land Nigeria.
This meeting was scheduled for last year 2020, but has fate will have it COVID 19 created a
setback. In March of 2021, I submitted at the IGSOSANA Executive meeting, that we should
defer the convention to 2022 because of the pandemic. But, at the meeting, the President, Dr.
Bayo Laniyonu, gave some good reasons why we must move forward with the convention - this
convention.
Here we are today to celebrate our commitment to our “alma mater” the pillar of the defining
moment in our lives. When I see my classmates, I marvel at their achievements and how they have
grown in wisdom from young boys of those days , I'm always looking forward to seeing each one of
us. I also look forward to seeing some of our seniors that were in Higher School, and more intrigued
with all the juniors coming behind especially class sets of the Nineties up to the present set.
It is my wish and prayer that we will have a good time to celebrate and enjoy one another’s
presence at this convention, without losing sight of the goal and common thread that bind all of us
together as Grammarians.
Come on let us celebrate IGS!
Thank you for your presence at this convention.

The Story
Behind the Irefin
House Name
I n its early years (around
1917), it is noteworthy
to note that Ibadan
Grammar School relied
exclusively on good-
spirited individuals
for its development in its early years
around 1917. The largest donation at the
foundation stone laying ceremony of the
School at Oke Are was by Baale Irefin
who donated £100.
Irefin House was named after this
visionary philanthropist who despite
being a Muslim had the foresight
to invest in a Christian School and
in the education of generations of
Mountaineers regardless of their religion
and background.
What is the meaning of Irefin?
The People of Irefin quarter of Ibadan
were predominantly blacksmiths and
may have derived the name from Irefin
(Iru efin) translated as the “emission
of smoke” which emanates from their
compound when they are engaged in
their occupational activities.
Now you know the story behind the
Irefin House name!

O n behalf of Ibadan Grammar School Old Students’ Association (IGSOSA), I
congratulate all members of IGSOSANA under the leadership of President
Bayo Laniyonu and welcome you all to your 14th Annual Convention
taking place in Dallas, Texas, USA. We thank God for the grace to be
alive to celebrate despite all the global happenings in the last couple

association celebrated the 108th Founder’s day anniversary and I was delighted that it
generated a lot of interest and participation by a large number of diaspora members 21
who turned up physically and on the virtual scene, marking a sharp turn in previous
anniversaries of our alma mater.
Let me place on record the great enthusiasm and generosity of branches, class-sets
and individuals to contribute generously to the development of infra structure and
other projects for our alma mater. Many projects contributed by the old students and
commissioned in the past years brought joy and smiles to the faces of students and
parents alike. Notable examples are:
1. Contribution by IGSOSANA to the teaching standard in the school by employment of
additional teachers in subjects with vacancies.
2. Many class sets and individuals have contributed generously towards refurbishing
classrooms, provision of chairs and tables as well as donation towards purchase of
chairs and tables for Emmanuel Alayande hall.
3. A new block of class room by the Federal Government, facilitated by our own
colleagues from Abuja branch.
Our sincere gratitude to everyone involved financially or otherwise in all these projects.
To say the truth, the body of old students has for a long time been in the business of
lifting Ibadan Grammar School to an enviable standard. Along this line, IGSOSA under
my leadership, will intensify efforts at nurturing the school towards total excellence. I
am happy to inform you that two Committees have been put in place by the National
Executive Council. They are:
1. The Committee on Academic Performance, inaugurated on 2nd June 2021, with
Comrade Lateef Gbadamosi as Chairman and mandate to look into the students’
academic performance in Ibadan Grammar School over the years and make
recommendations on ways to improve overall students’ performance..
2. The Foundation Coordinating Committee, inaugurated on 1st of July 2021 to enable
systematic development and maintenance of infrastructure belonging to IGSOSA,
with Mr, Muyiwa Kupoluyi as Chairman and representation from every branch of the
global association.
Both committees no doubt, will greatly assist our alma mater to regain its past glory.
I thank God for tremendous support received from the Chairman and other members
of the Board of Trustees, members of the National Executive Committee as well as
from Chairmen of the various Branches of our Association.
Finally, let me commend the efforts of IGSOSANA and encourage you to continue in
the spirit of giving back to the school that gave so much and made us who we are
today.
Wishing you most a successful Convention.

May I commend the Executive and members of IGSOSANA for the unalloyed support for our alma
mater and the vision to ensure it is a Centre of Excellence in Education. The Foundation is proud to be
associated with you and we look forward to a more robust and productive engagement in the nearest
future. I am sure that your representative on the Committee, Yinka Omole,Esq. will give you favourable
periodic feedback of our interventions in IGS.
I wish you all happy and fruitful deliberations at the Dallas Convention.

THE STORY
BEHIND The
Olubi House
Name
Pioneer missionary to “Yoruba Proper” in the nineteenth century, David
Hinderer hailed from Weisbuch, near Schondorf, in Württemberg,
Germany.
Rev. David Hinderer converted Rev. Daniel Olubi, with his 1st cousin, Rev.
Canon Okusehinde to Christianity during his missionary work in Abeokuta.
Olubi and Okusehinde came with Hinderer to Ibadan and settled in
Kudeti. There were 6 missionaries including Hinderer that left Abeokuta
on a mission to Ibadan. The horse that they rode was the 7th and that is
the reason for the say in Yoruba “eeyan mefa lo mu igbogbo wo Ibadan,
esin (horse) lo sekeje”. These 2 men rocked education system of Ibadan &
Yoruba land.
Rev. Olubi in turn converted and trained our Founder Bishop Akinyele.
Olubi was part of the committees with CMS that were in talks to establish
Ibadan Grammar School before passing away on September 29, 1912. Rev.
Olubi was buried at Kudeti. He never returned to his town, Abeokuta.
The Anglican Communion put everything on hold as Rev. Akinyele
succeeded him to run St. David’s, Kudeti. Despite the weight of the burden,
as Rev. Akinyele was very young then, a few months later, he founded IGS
on March 31st, 1913.
Years later Rev. Latunde, grand-son-in-law to Rev. Olubi and the second
Principal of IGS named Olubi House in his memory.
Above is the first storey built in Ibadan (inside St. David’s Church Kudeti),
known as Hinderer House. It was built by Reverend and Mrs Hinderer as the
first Mission House in Ibadan. Its foundation was laid in 1844 and completed
in 1855.
• First set of male boarding students of IGS lived in this building in 1913.
• Rev. Olubi and Bishop Akinyele lived here.
• Mama Alayande grew up inside this building at Kudeti as a vicarage girl.
• It is in this house that the First Sacrament was administered to the first
set of Christians in Ibadan.
40 • It is in this building that the then Baale of Ibadan and his chiefs first had
contact with a mirror.

MEET OBA AKINYELE
THE FIRST PASTOR CROWNED A KING IN NIGERIA
The brother of Bishop A. B. Akinyele and the Olubadan whose name is behind
the Olubadan House at Ibadan Grammar School.
I n the Holy Bible, a few prophets were sent
by God. Not many of these prophets were
recorded to be Kings in their realms. Oba
Isaac Babalola Akinyele likewise follows the
stride of incredible prophets in the Bible
who became Kings during their lifetime.
As a devoted Christian, Isaac Akinyele turned into
a functioning individual from the Christ Apostolic
Church (a pentecostal church) and served for quite
a while as the congregation’s leader in Nigeria.
He additionally turned into a boss and rose
consistently in the conventional chain of importance
over which an Oba, the Olubadan, has controlled
since 1936. He became Otun Balogun and afterward
in late 1953, Balogun. Issues were normal in light of
the fact that the title had close relationship with the
customary Yoruba religion which made it hard for a
sincere Christian to hold such a title.
For around ten years, correctly 1955 to 1964, the city
of Ibadan was held hypnotized by maybe its most
strange conventional ruler known in history. In any
case, the issues were survived and Akinyele rose
consistently towards the Oba’s seat.
During his rule he asked for a great deal of help
generally with Apostle Ayodele Babalola, the author
of Christ Apostolic Church.
SCHOOL PREFECTS 2020/2021 ACADEMIC YEAR He was an exceptionally strict man and was
an incredible disciple of contextualisation and
acculturisation of strict convictions, since he held
the view that religion without regard to social roots;
would interminably be viewed as outsider religion
by the agnostic populace.
It was an augmentation of these solid perspectives
that made him split away from the primary universal
brand to join the Faith Tabernacle; the antecedent
of the Christ Apostolic Church, the first Aladura
Pentecostal Church in Nigeria.
As a major aspect of his commitment in freeing
the city of Ibadan, Oba Akinyele was selected as
a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the
British Empire and was portrayed as ‘The Bishop
who carried on with an existence of virtue and
uprightness urged by all Christians’.

CONVENTION DALLAS 2021
MR. MIKE OLATUNJI FUWA
President, IGSOSAUK
Dear IGSOSANA President, Dr Bayo Laniyonu, IGSOSANA Executives, Fellow Mountaineers, Dis-
tinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen attending IGSOSANA Convention DALLAS 2021, I am
deeply honoured to have the privilege of writing a short congratulatory message.
The past 15 to 18 months have been challenging across the Globe with the Covid-19 pandemic. At
the height of the pandemic the IGSOSONA 2020 convention had to go virtual as with other events
around the globe. It is by the thankful grace of the Almighty Lord that it is possible for IGSOSA-
NA Dallas 2021 to meet in-person at this convention and we your brothers and sisters in the UK
rejoice with you. Most importantly, we wish you All a safe convention.
The IGSOSA UK being the first IGSOSA Chapter in the diaspora, has watched the growth of
IGSOSANA over the past 15 years to the powerhouse it is today and are proud of its growth and
achievement over the years. The vision of IGSOSANA has been seen in the provision of the new
Physics & Biology laboratory, Teacher Recruitment, The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineer-
ing and Mathematics) programme, Engineer Seke Somolu University Scholarship (in honour of a
great Grammarian) to name a few.
It has been an honour for me over the last 18 months to have been collaborating with IGSOSANA
President Dr Bayo Laniyonu where we have shared the same values in collaborating at IGSOSA
National Level and with other IGSOSA Chapters for the success of the school. It is important to
stress that this collaboration at National Level and other chapters must continue and let it be at
the forefront of what we do in the future years. It is with this tenacity and cooperation that allows
us to continue making a difference in the lives of IGS Students.
At this point, on behalf of IGSOSA UK, I wish to extend our hearty congratulations to IGSOSANA
on the Dallas 2021 Convention and wish The President, The Executives, The Mountaineers, and
