WHY DO

I STILL

SUPPORT IGS

DR. JONATHAN FRENCH From my earliest years, I have wanted to help the world, at
home and abroad. I studied Engineering and Applied Physics.
FORMER PEACE CORP EXCHANGE TEACHER AT IGS As I approached graduation from university in 1961, I was
increasingly wanting to GO OUT AND DO SOMETHING useful.

The opportunity to come to IGS for two years to teach Physics and
Applied Mathematics appeared almost magically. Though my
preparation for the job was in many ways uneven, I undertook it
with pleasure and energy, taught what I knew, and learned a great
deal from the students, my teaching colleagues, and the Ibadan
community.

In the half century following my tour at IGS, I earned my Ph.D. in Civil
Engineering, then worked for a prominent US firm in water supply
and wastewater treatment and disposal, for many of the world’s cities
including Boston, Istanbul, Alexandria, Singapore, Sydney and Sao
Paulo.

I retired in 2013, but felt a desire to keep helping where I could. At
about the same time, I was delighted to find that the Ibadan Grammar
School had survived the 50 years since my departure, with a much
enlarged student population, and a greatly diversified curriculum!
Furthermore, I learned that IGS has robust Old Students Associations
in Nigeria, in the UK, and in North America! Here was another
opportunity to support the School with donations, encouragement,
and suggestions.

The School’s many notable alumni/ae are wonderful role models for
the Mountaineers now working hard at Molete. We want the students
and their teachers now at IGS to aspire, enthusiastically, to excel in
their endeavours, at this school, and beyond. Who will they have

become, by the time they turn 50?

HOW SHOULD SCHOOL ADDRESS
INAPPROPRIATE STUDENT BEHAVIOR

WINNING ESSAY SUBMITTED BY:
LAMIDI USMAN | CLASS: SS2 SCIENCE 3

To start with what is the meaning of inappropriate behavior? Inappropriate behaviors are obnoxious and
unacceptable behaviors that are not allowed in a particular environment.

There are a lots of inappropriate student behaviors in the school, but the common types are; talking at inappropriate times, failing to pay attention
in the class, refusing to do required work, truancy, bullying and noise-making. These bad behaviors always frustrate teachers, it also cause low
academic performances of the student and in most cases give the school a bad reputation..
There are various ways in which school can address inappropriate student behaviors. Some of them are as follows:

First, the School management should organize educative seminars or programs to train teachers about class-room management. If this program
is organized, it will enlighten the teachers on how to curb inappropriate student behavior. This can be achieved if the teachers are introduced to
modern and effective ways of managing the class to be noise-free, interactive and more interesting. With these approach, it will help teachers to
determine what constitute inappropriate behavior in the class-room and how it can be managed.

Secondly, the school should have well defined and clearly stated rules and regulation which should state what the students should do and what
they shouldn’t. When a student exhibits behavior that goes against the school expectations, he/she must face the consequences immediately.
Such as punishments. For every rule and regulation, there must be a punishment for whosoever violates it no matter the hierarchy of the person
.There should be different types of punishment based on the type of offense committed. Punishment will serve as decelerating the frequency of an
inappropriate behavior. Example of punishment is paying fine for making noise, flogging for fighting etc.

Thirdly, the school management must encourage and reward good behavior among students. A student who exhibits good behavior should be
rewarded by the school management. For example a student that found a lost purse containing a good sum of money on the floor and returned it
to the school authority must be rewarded, if the student spends the money, no one would have known. This type of student should be called out on
the assembly ground to commend the student for his/her good behavior. This will encourage other students to put on good behavior and with this
intervention inappropriate student behavior will be gradually declining.

Furthermore, the school authorities may suggest school/parent contract. This is a type of contract between the parent of the student and the
school authorities. Under the contract, the parent agrees to do certain things, for example, signing a weekly behavior report and making sure that
your child arrives at school on time each day. In return the school will offer you and your child support.

In addition, the school authorities must make PTA [Parent Teacher Association] meeting an Open day compulsory meeting. This will enable the
parent to know how their children are doing in school. In these meetings, the teachers will take time to explain what they notice about the behav-
ior of their children and perhaps suggest a solution.

Also, there should be proper screening of students before they are admitted into the school. The school authorities must have adequate informa-
tion about the students they want to admit. Some students seek admission in another school after they have been expelled from one school as
a result of the offense they have committed. If such students are given admission, there is a strong probability that the students will continue the
bad behavior and eventually influence other students negatively. Also the school authorities should have adequate collection of students personal
information such as students address, parent’s phone number etc, so that the students will know that they have nowhere to hide and in this case
they will put on good behavior.

Implementing capable task forces by the school to move around the school premises to monitor and apprehend any student who fails to enter the
classroom. They will search all the nooks and crannies of the school and all possible hideout to comb out all students playing truancy. All students
caught in this situation should be severely punished in order to serve as lesson to the others.

In conclusion, the school should organize seminars with the help of old students of the school or elders outside the school who once had a bitter
experience of exhibiting bad behavior but later changed for good. The person will state the bad consequences of inappropriate behavior and how
to change to a good student. This will help the student to turn new leaf; it will also encourage and boost the morale of the students.

Thanks. (Edited for Publication) 71

72 DO YOU THINK THE

ENOUGH TO ERADICATE

WINNING ESSAY BY : JOEL GIDEON OLAWALE | CLASS: SSS 3 SCIENCE CLASS 2

Considering the present situation of Nigeria, my answer to the topic placed before me is ‘NO.’ Doing enough?
No I say. We citizens of Nigeria are under a corrupt government. Then, would the corrupt government eradi-

cate corruption? No, it’s a herculean task, the governing body in Nigeria are also corrupt

Government officials, that are our leaders, embezzle the funds allocated to projects in various sectors of the government
and country meant to catalyze the development of the country. Well, I know many people are aware that embezzlement is
a great offense, punishable under law. But remember that our leaders venture in it. So, how do you expect such people to

be successful in eradicating corruption in Nigeria, or even to think of such mission?
However, the government arrests thieves and even sentences them to a very long jail term, leaving its disintegrating cab-
inet behind. Then, come to think of it, is the government actually doing the right thing? No. There should be no nepotism,

such nepotism is epileptic, no thief, including the politicians and government officials should be left off the hook, rule of
law must prevail, and the law must be sovereign over everybody.

Also, aspiring politicians make dirty plans to rig election during election period. Gubernatorial, presidential, and all other
government political aspirants relax, thinking there would always be a way out, no matter what the circumstance may be,
there would always be chances to rig election. Why? Why don’t you let the citizens elect the leaders of their choice? Why

squeezing yourself into the posts meant for the citizens to decide who owns it?

However, if any Nigerian citizen, such as the student caught involved in examination malpractices, such student could be
facing up to 21 years in jail. Now, I would like to know the difference between a candidate aspiring for a government post
that rigged election to get to the post and a candidate /student writing an examination and involved in examination mal-
practice. As for me, there is no difference between them, they are the same. Then why should a government official who

got to the post through election manipulation arrest a junior cheat, that is a student who involves in examination malprac-
tice for him to pass? It is not fair, and doing that is even corrupt.

Furthermore, government political aspirants make promises, politically called manifestos, during campaign period. These
promises are not fulfill when they eventually get to the post. Why tell lies to secure a government post? I would rather

the government posts aspirants make promises they can fulfill if they really want corruption to be eradicated in Nigeria.
On the other hand, when these people eventually get to the posts they were aspiring for, they would take up the case of

a fraudster aggressively as though they were not also fraudsters. These government officials lies, made fake promises!
When they were yet to get to the post, then how are they different from fraudsters? So, are they doing enough to eradicate

corruption in Nigeria by telling lies and being a scammer (Cyber language for fraudsters)? Now in Nigeria, the topic cor-
ruption is being illuminated, and it is now clearly known to everyone that the government is not doing enough to eradicate

corruption in Nigeria.

Nigerian government has set up anti-crime agencies, such as the Electoral and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and
others to fight corruption. 80-90% of the victims of these agencies are politicians. Let’s think about it, should such people

be found in anti-crime agencies custody? What a shame! The aim of government creating these agencies is to arrest
corrupt citizens, and not politicians who have eventually made the largest percentage of the victims. After these politicians

are released from the custody of the anti-crime agencies, they still aspire for a political post, and we Nigerians also will
ignorantly vote them in. Corrupt leaders leading corrupt followers. Then, how could the mission of eradicating corruption
be successful? When the whole country is corruption. The government is unarguably not doing enough to eradicate cor-

ruption in Nigeria.

To sum up, I strongly believe that the government eradication of corruption should starts. within the political power
holders before the eradication of corruption can progressively moves thru the Federal capital territory and other states at

large. But, how can this happen? I would suggest electoral malpractice and embezzlement is thoroughly checked. Also,
any aspiring political candidate should make sure he/she has a contribution to the development of the society before
aspiring for any post, so as to assure and guarantee the citizens that a large percentage of his/her manifestos will be

fulfilled. When this is done, the citizens would also be encouraged to emulate their leaders’ acts and adopt good values.
Then, we will live in a corruption-free country, and corruption will be a story of the past for the Giant of Africa, our great

fatherland, Nigeria!

GOVERNMENT IS DOING 73
CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA?

WINNING ESSAY BY: OLATUNBOSUN ANIKE OMOLAYO | CLASS: SSS 3 ARTS 1

To start with, I will like to ask a question. What is Government and what is corruption?

Government is the machinery through which the will of a state is formulated, expressed and
realized. That is, government is being given the right to enforce law and compel obedience. Power is given
to government by the people with the aim of leading the people (citizens) according to their desires. While
corruption is acting against these sets down rules, laws, and regulations given in a particular state or country.
In a nutshell, we can say corruption is acting immorally or committing different atrocities.

In Africa, the world in general, corruption is inevitable. Governments are being put in power so as to find solu-
tion to it but what is the outcome of their effort? As the topic says “Do You Think The Government Is Doing
Enough To Eradicate Corruption?” My answer to this question is a capital “NO”.My reasons are as follows:

I will like to start with The Law Enforcement Agency- The Police. The police are the paramilitary forces that
are trained to secure and save the lives and properties of the people. Nowadays, reverse is the case. The po-
lice that ought to stand against corruption as they are being trained are the ones practicing these corruptible
act. People believed police are friend of the people. But, come to think of it the police that ought to be citizens’
friend are now citizens’ enemies. They engage in all sorts of atrocities like robbery, untruthfulness to mention
but a few.

Also, political leaders engage in the embezzling the national funds. These political leaders are placed in the
seat of service but they turned the seat of service to a seat to make wealth. The money that was supposed
to be used for the development of the country is embezzled by them. Our leaders keep making their pocket
fat. Now tell me, can a thief rule a thief? The act of corruption practiced by our leaders is really affecting the
upcoming generation. A popular adage says “If the head is faulty, the entire body is also faulty”.

Likewise, the act of election rigging is another form of corruption. This act has been normalized by the lead-
ers, thru corrupt election, void of free and fair. Corruptly, political power are handed over to corrupt politicians

Another form of corruption in today Nigeria is the business of illicit drugs, that is morally wrong and corrupt.
This business of illicit drugs is being practiced in Nigeria by Nigeria leaders. Now for some ex and present
Nigeria leaders to have gotten themselves involved in such corrupting business, how can they eradicate
corruption in Nigeria? Don’t let us deceive ourselves; the so called leaders with their actions are not about to
eradicate corruption.
In addition to the vast list of corrupt practices in Nigeria, is the government’s approval in promoting this dirty
work called “prostitution”. Prostitution is one of the oldest means of business which has to do with using one’s
body sexually to earn money. Nigeria leaders also patronize these prostitution business. Prostitution is not a
legalized business in Nigeria but a corrupt one. I could remember vividly, when Nigeria prostitutes wrote to
the leaders that they also want to be celebrated and that a date should be given a day in the calendar to cele-
brate the profession. Nigerian government is eradicating corruption is a big lie.

Additionally, hiring of assassins to achieve political desires is another high rate of immoral-corruption. As we
know that lots of our leaders are fond of hiring assassins in order to achieve their political ambitions at the
detriment of another human being life. Must you kill in other to be a leader? Or must you kill in order to get
fame? Unfortunately, most of Nigeria leaders are playing with peoples lives so as to achieve their political
aims. Our leaders are heartless and don’t care about the citizens. Tell me, how can a heartless human being
eradicate corruption?

How can corruption be eradicated in Nigeria when the leaders in government are also involved in it. In a nut-
shell, Nigeria governments are not fighting against corruption but are encouraging corruption.

IGS’s FESTIVAL OF ARTS: 77

A TRUE RENAISSANCE

I t’s usually a week of frenzied, emotive and ominous wonders,
whenever our school held the nationally renowned and
popular Festival of Arts.

All over Nigeria, it was felt, that something great was going
on. Not with the full media blast, involvement of Government,
Critical Stakeholders, the literati and gliterati of the Arts , patrons of Arts
and the Academia.

The Festival entailed the performance of all the genres of Arts and
literature : Prose. poetry and Play (the 3Ps), together with songs and
dance.

All over IGS, there was always a dance here, poetry there, play in that
Hall, prose up there!!!

For many years, many of our renowned Stars in the creative and
performance Arts were old students of IGS. Laolu Ogunniyi, Tunji
Oyelana, Prof Dapo Adelugba, broadcasting gurus Like Bayo Akinnola,
Bode Alalade passed through our school either as students or teachers.
Dapo Adelugba said Wole Soyinka, was always visiting IGS, during The
Festival, to talent hunt.

It could be rightly said therefore, that Nigeria might not have attained
her great heights in the Arts if not for the foundational roles of IGS.

Unfortunately, our school stopped this Festival at the fortuned time
when creative and performance Arts blossomed. Just when IGS
was to profit from its long investment in the Arts, the beat stopped!!
Today, schools that did not write any prose, that never sang a song, nor
did any work for the theatre are benefiting from the present boom in
Nollywood, and in the revolution in Song and dance!

We must reclaim our Glory! A return of this Festival becomes imperative.
It was IGS's greatest branding. It is hereby suggested that we make
next year’s Founder’s Day celebrations, a week of Festival of Arts; and
henceforth , a yearly event.

The benefits are enormous. Apart from the current huge global
investment in the Arts, apart from its money making potentials, apart
from the immense absorptive capacity, employment capacity of the
Arts, Arts is a bridge builder, its advert/publicity impact is second to
none. It will simply, at last take our school to the world stage.

We must realise that we’re today in a competitive knowledge based
economy. Institutions and Nations that will excel now and in future are
those that invest in ideas!!

SEKE SOMOLU UNIVERSITY
SCHOLARSHIP FUND

ESTABLISHED SEPTEMBER 6TH, 2020

L ate Engineer Foluseke Somolu is one of Ibadan Grammar
School’s distinguished old students and one of Nigeria’s finest
electrical Engineers.

Upon completion of the Higher School Class (HSC) in 1966,
he taught Physics and Mathematics at IGS briefly prior to his
admission into the University of Lagos for further studies in Electrical Engineering.
He was the National President of IGSOSA from 2007 to 2010. He was Vice Chairman
and later Chairman of the IGSOSA Lagos Branch. Seke Somolu was a very dedicated
and proud Mountaineer. He left an indelible mark on the school and the IGSOSA
community with unprecedented support of IGS projects and programs. He was
instrumental to the completion of the Emmanuel Alayande Hall. As the Chairman
of the Fundraising Committee, he personally raised tens of millions of naira for the
School.

He was a custodian of Ibadan Grammar School history and records and he published
many books on the school, the last of which is a reference point titled “The Ibadan
Grammar School of our Time” .

Engr. Seke Somolu was a very good friend of IGSOSANA, attending many of our
conventions, playing active roles and supporting us financially.

He was described by one of his colleagues as an unusually patriotic Nigerian who
sacrificed his comfort for upliftment of people in need, while promoting excellence
in others regardless of tribal or political inclination. He was a brilliant, hardworking
and meticulous professional electrical engineer, who mentored several engineers.

Today, we honor one of our finest old students for his love, kindness, generosity,
compassion and sacrifice and his innumerable contributions and particularly, his
passion for Ibadan Grammar School and our Alumni Association, by naming this
Scholarship Fund after Engineer Foluseke Somolu.

OLUWATOYIN
B O LU KA L E (PhD)luwatoyin Bolukale came into the world in the

beautiful city of Owo, Nigeria. She is a Geography
teacher at Ibadan Grammar School, Nigeria. She
holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Urban and Regional

O Planning from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile
Ife. She is a member of Nigeria Institute of Town
Planners and a registered town planner. She is a mentor of teenage
girls and a coach. She is also an international volunteer at the Annual
International Coastal Cleanup.

For the past 8 years at IGS, she has been able to blend her passions
and talents to make a difference in the life of her students and in
the process enriching her own life. As a teacher at IGS, she has been
able to take advantage of skills and knowledge in ICT and related
disciplines to achieve the best of what she does. Her contributions
have been significant, wide-sweeping, and impactful not only in
Geography but also in STEAM related programs at IGS. She has
made great accomplishments to date by being positive, prepared,
and excited about what she does. She uses this positive attitude
to influence and show each student their potential by providing
feedback and recognition of individual goal-attainment. She does
her best to spark an interest in learning and showing each individual
student that they have a fire within them beyond their imagination,
too. It takes a lot of energy to get to know each student, evaluate their
strengths and interests and show them that she genuinely respects
and care about their future. A mission that she takes seriously.

Oluwatoyin has the ability to take unhealthy portfolios and transform
them into healthy and thriving ones. This led to her to being the
Coordinator of Computer Programming Language Training, Coding
Club, Tourism Club, School Choir, and the Annual Christmas Choir at
IGS. She was opportune to train over 100 students of IGS in Scratch 1
and 2 in the last three years courtesy of Google through an I.T Boot
camp in Lagos and Python sponsored by IGSOSANA in 2021. When
not teaching, she enjoys reading, travelling, singing, and listening to
classical music.

Oluwatoyin is open to challenges, conversations, and exchange of
ideas from top players in ICT, Environment, Waste Management,
Tourism and STEM.

Her long term goal and guiding words have been” Whatever your
hand finds to do, do it with all thy might for there is no work or
device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going”-
Ecclesiastes 9: 10.

She uses this medium to appreciate every member of IGSOSANA, for
their love, concern and care for giving back to the school.

Putting smiles on the faces of these beautiful lives gladdens our
heart. God bless you all. It’s a privilege to serve God and humanity
through your association. Thank you all for this honour. Happy
Anniversary. Meet you all at the top. Up School!!!
