DECLARATION
OF LOYALTY
TO THE SCHOOL
I pledge myself to remember
that at all times and
in all places, I am the
representative of Ibadan
Grammar School. I will
therefore strive to refrain
from any word or deed
which may bring discredit
upon the school.
I will endeavour to be
loyal to the staff and to
all school fellows.
I would ever seek to be
worthy of the school;
To add to its lustre, and
To cherish its highest
traditions:
I will try to play my part in
transmitting them to others,
not less but greater and better
than they were transmitted to
me.
SO HELP ME GOD: AMEN.

physical and financial contributions of all branches,
class sets and mountaineers. Besides, many projects
were ready to be commissioned including:
i) completely overhauled and furnished Chemistry and

ii) newly Constructed and well-equipped Sick Bay by
the 1968-72 Class set;

The celebration which was all inclusive spread joy

We are ready to ensure an all-inclusive association
in which every member whether home based or in

are today. I must acknowledge the outgoing execu-
tive of IGSOSANA, and particularly the exemplary
leadership of Dr Yinka Okuwoga who having been
President for 4 years will be stepping out of office this
year with great fulfilment. He has made possible a very
cordial working relationship between IGSOSANA and
the National Executive Council, enabling our school
to benefit maximally from the impact of collaborative
intervention. I wish him and other executive members
well in their future endeavours.
Wishing all Happy Convention.

GOODIE M. IBRU, OON HON. DSChe theme of this year’s annual con-
vention, “TOWARDS A CENTER OF
EXCELLENCE BY 2023” excites me.
It shows that we are setting our agenda
for the next five years and clearly given a
five-year program of actions and programs
to undertake to achieve this vision. I can
Ttherefore say considering where we are coming from that with
hard work, tenacity of purpose and collective support we can
achieve this set goal. It is a goal that all members of our global
association must subscribe to. It is basic, it is fundamental and it
is achievable.
I greet all boys and girls from far and near to this year’s conven-
tion in Atlanta, Georgia. On behalf of myself and members of
the Registered Trustees of our Association. I pray that this year’s

activities, you have set a high pace for others to follow, you oc-
cupied a place of pride is in our collective engagement as a body.
Under the leadership of Dr. Yinka Okuwoga you have pushed
the agenda to a very laudable height. Your constant interven-

projects in the school is a cynosure of all eyes and a pride to our

The legacy that our school is does not need any World Renowned Journalist

of what defines our traditions and usages that Read Profile & Accomplishments on Page 32
have been passed down to generations of alumni
and alumnae can be traced to the personality
and pedagogy of our founding principal: the
centrality of music to a solid liberal education,
the commitment to principle and integrity in all
things, community involvement, and the fact that
our education is a privilege that we redeem by
service to humanity beyond ourselves.
He was one of the founders of the Egbe Agba O
Tan [Elders-Are-Not-Extinct Society] and this
explains, in part, our school motto. “It was to be a
society for the preservation of Yoruba culture.” For
this to happen, it had for its “primary objective”:
“‘to institute research into all Yoruba Religions,
Customs, Philosophy, Medical Knowledge, Arts,
Sciences, Manufactures, Poetical Cultures, Political
and National Histories, etc.’” The insistence that
the best of the new should be married to the best
of the old in our lives under Christianity and the
then incipient colonial regime in Ibadan partly
explains the dual languages—Latin and Yoruba—
in which our school motto is inscribed.
A pioneer missionary, educationist, and
community leader who accomplished all this
in spite of some physical disability that resulted
from a childhood injury to his left shoulder that
nearly claimed his life and which some attempted
to use to disqualify him from becoming Bishop
of Ibadan in 1933, is a worthy model for others
in our time and in the future who receive the
IGSOSANA Pioneer Leadership Award.
We celebrate and honour the memory of Bishop
A.B. Akinyele for his pioneering spirit, his
institution-building, and his peerless service to
humanity.

different times by different appointing agencies.
One could not serve tours of duty at the helm of
three different distinguished secondary schools
without impacting in many significant respects
the development of the students whose lives
were molded by those institutions and those
who staffed them at a delicate stage—between
puberty and adolescence—of the development
of those wards. And impact did Labiyi have on
those of us who had the privilege of being in his
care. If you had ever been present at any of the
Friday afternoon assemblies and heard him sum
up the week, share with us warnings and admo-
nitions regarding the dangers of drug use and
other untoward, unhealthy pursuits, it is a voice
that continued to resonate long after you would
have left high school behind. And it is no won-
der that he had a hand in shaping the lives of
many who have gone on to attain distinction in
all walks of life. He was a principal of principals.
It was in recognition of his sterling accomplish-
ments as a moulder of young minds and the im-
pact on the community that he was conferred
with the title of the Agbaakin Aare of Ibadan-

Labiyi, at different periods in his inspiring life,

ARCHITECT CHIEF DANIEL
OLAKANMI FADELE
2019 RECIPIENT OF THE CHIEF JOSEPH LABIYI
AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED PROFESSIONAL
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Architect Daniel Olakanmi Fadele, born on 12th February, 1930, hails from the well-branded village--Ayede Model
Village (AMV). He attended the Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, Erunmu.
After his primary education, he attended Ibadan Grammar School from 1948-1953 (Admission number 2436)
where he was the Akinyele House Prefect in his final year. While at school, he loved Latin and his writings today
are always laced with Latin quotes. Surely, he would say; “IGS URBEM TERRARUM SUPERAVIT” meaning
“IGS conquered the world” apparently referring to the school’s state of the art science laboratories facilitated by
IGSOSANA.
He is very passionate and particular about Ibadan Grammar School affairs. As a member of the Ibadan branch of
Ibadan Grammar School Old Students Association (IGSOSA,) Architect Fadele, for four consecutive years, hosted
the branch meetings in his Rotunda edifice in Ibadan.
He is the President of the 1948-53 Class Set of IGSOSA.
Architect Fadele is a man of many parts. As an accomplished architect, he co-founded with another Grammarian,
Architect Layi Ojo, of blessed memory, the Allied Architects, which designed (free of charge) the unrivalled
Emmanuel Alayande Hall, among many others. As a devout Christian, he is an Elder. As a community leader of
exponential degree, he is the Mogaji of Ajagba Compound, Oke Offa Babasale, Ibadan.
Despite his advance in age, a proud Mountaineer, Pa Fadele finds time to attend many events organized for the
school. In 2018, he was the oldest Mountaineer who attended the 2018 STEM program at the school. He was also
very delighted to attend all the events of the 106th Founder’s Day Program where, as the oldest Mountaineer present
at the naming of the Bishop Akinyele Road, he had the honor to make a speech and then offered a corporate prayer.
This rare gentleman, whom God saved from the 1957 Lalupon Train Disaster, always says that he has been
“ransomed, healed, restored and forgiven” and so he will always show gratitude to God Almighty.
He is a family man blessed with wonderful children, grandchildren, sons and daughters-in-law. He has a large heart
full of greatness and goodness.
IN RECOGNITION OF HIS PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN ARCHITECTURE AND
DEDICATION TO OUR ALMA MATER, IGSOSANA HONORS ARCHITECT DANIEL OLAKANMI FADELE
WITH THE CHIEF AYO LABIYI AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

10 Things You Probably Didn’t
Know About Atlanta
The ATL. A-town. Hotlanta. Whatever you want to call it, Atlanta is known for many different things: its
diverse musical heritage (John Mayer got his big break in Atlanta, as did Ludacris and Usher); its Southern
hospitality; its sports teams (the Braves, Falcons and Hawks, to name a few) and Hartsfield-Jackson
International Airport, ‘the world’s busiest passenger airport.’

While Atlanta seems to be an open book (Gone With the Wind, “Peachtree” in their names. Peachtree doesn’t have anything to do with
anyone?), however, here are 10 things that you may not know peaches, though. Creek and Cherokee Indians inhabited the site where

Atlanta is the fifth city to be the capital of the state of

You can walk, bike ride, in-line skate, skateboard, 41
horseback ride or run from Atlanta to Alabama on
the Silver Comet Trail.
This fully paved trail is built over old railroad trails
and spans 61.5 miles over railroad trestles and under
mountains from the Mavell Road Trailhead in Smyrna
to the Georgia/Alabama state line. Once in Alabama,
the trail joins the Chief Ladiga Trail, which runs for
another 33 miles.
Atlanta is the only city in North America destroyed
by a fire as an act of war.
During the Civil War (otherwise known as the ‘War
Between the States’ according to some old-timers),
General Sherman burned the city on his infamous
‘March to the Sea.’ Following the city’s surrender to
Sherman in November of 1864, only 400 structures
remained standing. However, like the mythological
phoenix, Atlanta rose from the ashes stronger and
more beautiful. As a result, the city’s symbol is the
phoenix.
Ask a local for direction and you may hear ‘ITP’
and ‘OTP.’
It’s not a reflection on you. Rather, ITP and OTP stand
for ‘inside the perimeter’ and ‘outside the perimeter.’
Interstate 285, a more than 60 mile length of highway
that encircles the city, is the ‘P’ part of the equation.
OTP is considered Outer Mongolia to many ITP
residents.
The largest Hindu Temple in the world outside of
India is located 10 miles OTP of Atlanta.
As a result of the city’s continuously growing
international population (one in 10 people in metro
Atlanta was born outside the United States), Atlanta is
home to more than 1,000 places of worship including
churches, synagogues, mosques and both Hindu and
Buddhist temples.
The Capitol Dome that you see glinting in the
Atlanta skyline is layered in 43 ounces of pure gold.
In 1958, the original tin-covered dome was gilded in
pure gold that was mined in Dahlonega, Georgia, the
site of America’s first ‘Gold Rush’ in 1829. The Georgia
Capitol Dome is one of 10 state capitol domes that is
covered in gold leaf and is one of the largest along
with Iowa’s.
The world’s largest drive-in restaurant is located in
Atlanta.
Housed on more than two acres in Downtown Atlanta,
the Varsity has been an Atlanta institution for more
than 75 years. Able to accommodate 600 cars outside
and more than 800 people inside, the Varsity makes
two miles of hot dogs, 2500 pounds of potatoes, 5000
fried pies and 300 gallons of chili from scratch daily.
It’s necessary when Georgia Tech plays at home: more
than 30,000 people visit the Varsity on Yellowjacket
game days.
