About a Computer

Note to Teacher

Let the students do the conversation in class.
Print some figures of computer parts and

demonstrate them in class.
Take the students to computer lab and ask them

to identify the mouse, keyboard, monitor and
CPU.

20 New Gateway to Computer Science Book - One

Here is a conversation between father
and daughter about the computer. Let's
practise the conversation.

Have you ever seen a computer,
my little baby?

Yes! I have seen it
at my brother’s room and at
school too. Do you know papa?
There are a lot of computers
at my school but I do not know

more about them.

Oh Baby, do not worry! I
will tell you about it.

Really! I am too much
excited my papa.

New Gateway to Computer Science Book - One 21

Have you ever seen
radio, calculator, mobile,
tablet, television, freeze, rice
cooker, fan, etc. at home?

Sure papa! I have seen
them. My teacher has also
already told me about them

in my previous unit.

Oh, good! Now, I will tell you more
about it. As you know, radio, calculator,
mobile, tablet, television, rice cooker,
etc. need electricity to work. Similarly
the computer also needs electricity
to work. So, the computer is called an electronic
machine. A computer is also called a calculating device
because we can use computers for various types of
calculations. I am also using a computer at my office
for my official work.

22 New Gateway to Computer Science Book - One

Oh! Papa, have you got a
computer at your office!
How did it work? I want

to know about it.

Yes, I have. I am going to tell you
about how it works right now.
As you know that humans have
various physical parts for specific
work like eyes to see, ear to listen,
mouth to speak and the brain to think,
a computer also has its various parts to do the
work. The mouse, keyboard, Central Processing
Unit(CPU), monitor etc. are the physical
components of the computer. All parts of the
human body need to work together for proper
functioning, likewise all the parts of computer
must also work together to function properly.
The working principle of the computer is always
Input – Process – Output and Storage. It means
you have to give command to the computer at first.
After that, it goes for processing then displays
result which you can store for further use.

New Gateway to Computer Science Book - One 23

Papa! It is interesting. Really,
computer is an amazing device.

Thank you so much. Now, I
will tell these things to all my

friends in class.

a. Is a computer a calculating Score
device?
..................
b. What is the full form of CPU?
