Amazing Destinations 7 EDITOR’S NOTE With this issue, I’m delighted to say that Amazing Destinations has made it to its sixth birthday, this is despite the sectors we operate in (publishing, and travel) experiencing incredibly challenging times. Over the years, we’ve navigated a credit crunch, a global pandemic and a cost-of-living crisis, so it’s no mean feat to have reached this milestone. I would like to say ‘well done’ to our talented publishing team and a big ‘thank you’ to our valued partners and advertisers, here’s to the next six years folks. For me, this magazine was always born out of a love for travelling and telling stories. Stories about beautiful landscapes, about things experienced along the way and about warm hosts and kind hospitality. A friend of mine who’s been a travel writer for 30 years once gave me some good advice. He said ‘that as writers, we get afforded privileges that others do not. So, when you’re lucky enough to be invited on a press visit, stay humble, be grateful and don’t just assume you have the right to be there’. Never has this resonated more than during my recent trip to Lake Como, where a long-standing wish to take to the water in a classic era Riva Yacht was realised. The experience was everything I hoped it would be (Vivia Riva page 100), but even more memorable was meeting master shipwright Eriolario Matteri and his wonderful family. Enjoying an impromptu italian lunch, sharing stories and laughing like old friends was both unexpected and priceless. In today’s world, it seems almost impossible to take a holiday because we’re always connected to a vast array of devices and forced to keep up with the fast pace in which the world moves. When does one find the time to breakaway and unplug and how do you choose where to go with the endless array of destinations and experiences available? We’ve curated a list (Journeys to change your life page 36) that might help you narrow it down and discover where your next great adventure lies. Closer to home, luxury hotels (London’s calling page 106) and high-class resorts (Best of British page 10) have rapidly raised the staycation bar in recent years as guests increasingly demand higher standards of food, service, accommodation, and ambiance. As we head towards the Autumn, Amazing Destinations has already visited and reviewed more venues in 2023 than in any previous year. We hope that the handpicked choices featured in this issue and those to follow, will provide you with inspiration and options for that next great minibreak. Near or far, enjoy your travels. Amazing Destinations 17 This stylish boutique hotel, on the northern edge of the historic city centre is well placed for tourists to take in the sights on foot, bike or punt. By Martin Mason THE VARSITY HOTEL & SPA CAMBRIDGE The location of The Varsity couldn’t be better, just a stone’s throw from the historic Cambridge colleges and on the banks of the River Cam. There’s lots to do and see within easy reach from fine dining restaurants and classy shopping, to relaxed punting and classic museums. Space is at a premium in Cambridge, so slotting in a premium hotel with all the amenities you might expect isn’t easy. The Varsity has managed it with style though and those looking for pampering can relax in the Glassworks spa, an Elemis facility in a restored warehouse dating back to the 18th century. Upstairs is a well-equipped gym with a steam room, sauna and treatment rooms. The Varsity’s rooftop terrace is a great space to grab a cocktail and unwind with fabulous views of St John’s College spires. “ Our verdict This classy bolthole in Cambridge is a perfect getaway situated right in the heart of everything that’s delightful about the historic city. With wow-factor views, a stylish rooftop bar and two restaurants, the Varsity delivers everything you need for a relaxing stay. ” ROOMS We stayed in a Fellows king room with a super comfy king size bed. This spacious bedroom had floor to ceiling windows with a large furnished balcony affording impressive scenic views over the city and the nearby park. All mod cons were featured including smart TV, Apple desktop computer and super-fast WiFi. The bathroom was well proportioned, with a rainforest shower and free-standing roll-top bath with plenty of Elemis toiletries. FOOD The Varsity offers guests two dining options: SIX, an all-day brasserie that occupies the top floor of the hotel with panoramic views and dishes from a wood stone oven. We dined in The River Bar Steakhouse & Grill. Starter highlights included Burrata with cracked black pepper, slow roasted tomato, aged balsamic, and Scallops served in shells with herby garlic butter. The grill is the star here and there are a wide variety of fine steak cuts available which have been aged for 28 days. Our waiter also informs us that many of the other ingredients on the menu are sourced locally. We chose the Rib eye steak which was well prepared and tasty along with crispy triple cooked chips and a side of mac and cheese. Service was friendly and attentive, and the recommended Chianti Classico vintage wine pair went well with the steaks. By Julie Paice F O X H I L L S C O U N T R Y C L U B & S P A OTTERSHAW, SURREY “ Our verdict Whether you come for the stunning golf courses or the blissful spa, Foxhill’s Country Club & Spa is quite simply, spectacular. From great food and elegant rooms to exceptional services ” Many people come here for the golf - why wouldn't you when you consider Foxhills boasts two of the best courses in the entire UK. But you don't have to be a golfer to enjoy this place and we arrived in a girlie group of three ready to enjoy a weekend in the spa. The resort has four swimming pools, plus an award-winning tennis complex and cycling facilities. The spa offers a selection of shared experiences and a menu of gorgeous treatments to choose. It’s hard not to love a place that clearly aims at getting everyone feeling great and our Elemis 50-minute therapeutic massages were the perfect way to unwind. ROOMS Our room was poolside, and the temperature of the water was inviting, not cold. We resisted temptation to take a dip immediately, and instead ordered some bubbles to drink on the patio. The spacious accommodations are stylish with plush furnishings and all the mod cons you'd expect from a top-class resort including smart TV, air conditioning and super-fast WiFi. High quality toiletries were stocked in the bathroom and the all-important fluffy robes and slippers were great finishing touches. FOOD Having worked up an appetite with all that relaxation, we dined in the elegant yet relaxed Manor restaurant which has been awarded two AA rosettes for its culinary excellence. Everything we were served was delicious and the highlights included a wonderful stater of smoked pigeon breast with blackberry and parsnip puree. Outstanding amongst the mains was crispy wing cornfed chicken breast with pearl barley, and belly of lamb rump with potato terrine and courgette and mint puree. Make room for dessert because the apple and pear crumble with fudge, brandy custard, macadamia and ginger was really as good as it sounds. Service was friendly and informative and the recommended wine pair was a great good choice. Amazing Destinations 15 ” Overlooking the Brighton seafront in a spot near the British Airways i360, this historic Victorian hotel is a short walk from Brighton Pier, the Royal Pavilion, and the boutiques and bars of The Lanes. DOUBLE TREE BY HILTON BRIGHTON METROPOLE, BRIGHTON “ Our verdict Just an hour’s train journey from London, The Double Tree by Hilton Metropole in Brighton has a prime seafront position offering guests an unrivaled view of the sea. The hotel has a perfect location in walking distance of everything you come to Brighton for. With quality rooms, a nice indoor pool and a great restaurant next door, this is the perfect base for your minibreak to the seaside. Opened in July 1890, the Metropole was Brighton’s dazzling Grande Dame, equipped with a huge 500-seat dining hall and 700 lavish bedrooms. During the 1960’s its stylish casino attracted celebs of the day including Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Margaret and Ian Fleming, all of whom were drawn to its continental-style casino. Fast forward to 2020 and alas the casino has long gone but a £26m renovation budget has funded the complete refurbishment of the hotel’s 321 rooms, as well as its public areas, lobby, restaurant and bar. There was still renovation work taking place during our visit which meant that some of the lobby and public spaces were closed off. ROOMS Sea view guest rooms on the first three floors are the best choice for space and comfort and ours had a lovely cast-iron balcony with panoramic views of the coast. Beds are large and comfy, and all mod cons are included, including smart TV’s and fast WiFi. Bathrooms are bright and feature decent showers. FOOD In a spot along the seafront that is surrounded by Brighton’s popular chip shops the sleek minimalism of the Salt Room’s elegant facade stands out a mile. This restaurant by Coal Shed operator Razak Heleta opened its doors in 2015 and boasts the freshest seafood dining with uninterrupted sea views. The bar offers a creative selection of cocktails, including some very tempting botanical-focussed aperitifs. Everything we tried was delicious, the highlight being a Surf Board platter for two with charcoal-grilled oysters, prawns, squid and langoustines. 30 Amazing Destinations Sitges Beach

Amazing Destinations 31 Sitges is known as the Spanish St. Tropez for its yachting and sailing culture, exquisite restaurants, cobblestoned old town, and rugged coastal hikes. Of course, Barcelona is a fantastic Catalonian city; however, spending time in Sitges is ideal if you want to escape the city’s busyness. Enjoy Sitges 19 wonderful beaches Over time, because of the presence of artists, liberals, and poets, Sitges has developed a reputation for its Bohemian charm. This Bohemian charm, coupled with its stunning coastline of beaches, is the reason that Sitges is loved by holidaymakers and daytrippers. There is an extensive choice of beaches! For example, family beaches, urban beaches, dog-friendly beaches, cove-style beaches, gay beaches, party beaches, and blissfully refreshing swims in gin-clear water. Delight your senses with culinary experiences Sitges is justifiably famous for its restaurants. There is a saying about having 365 restaurants in Sitges, one for every day of the year. We can guarantee that even the most demanding diners will find more than enough to satisfy them here. Bars and nightlife Sitges has been noticed as a gay-friendly party town. Notwithstanding, it welcomes everyone! And there is a wide variety of bars and nightclubs, and they will provide an excellent backdrop for your night out. Some are relaxed, and some are high octane, but all are enjoyable. Most bars stay open until 2.00 or 3.00. Nonetheless, if you want to party on and see the sunrise on your way home, the town offers you some great clubs too! SITGES: THE PERFECT SPANISH GETAWAY Wine tasting A few bottles of local wine are the perfect addition to a Sitges holiday. Especially when this beach resort is situated in the heart of the Penedès region. It is famous for cava, a sparkling wine made in the same way as champagne. It is also an easy day trip to the glorious wine regions of Montsant and Priorat, which are famous for their red wines. The smaller wineries of the region are welcoming and interesting, but you’ll often need to book an appointment.

Amazing Destinations 33 Maricel Museum This magnificent building right on the seafront was refurbished in 2015 and now houses an outstanding collection. These art pieces are part of the Barcelona Provincial council local museum network. The extensive collection of more than 3,000 works covers periods from the 12th century to contemporary works. Cau Ferrat Santiago Rusiñol used to live next to the Maricel museum in this house that is now the Cau Ferrat Museum. Indeed, it was the Mecca of Modernism in the late 1800s at the heart of Sitges. The house became an artist salon hosting musicians, authors, and artists from Catalonia and beyond. Shopping and wandering around When you arrive, you will marvel yourself with Sitges’ wonderful beachside promenade with beautiful white buildings. Wandering around the characterful old town is very special, with its pretty cobbled squares and labyrinthine streets. You can enjoy the chic boutiques and art galleries that attract an ever-more cosmopolitan crowd. There are four main streets for shopping in Sitges: Carrer Sant Francesc, Carrer Parellades, Carrer Major and Carrer Jesus. You will find international chain shops; however, the real magic happens in every colourful local shop with unique personalities spread throughout the city. Festivals and more Sitges has so many festivals all year round! It could be worth planning your visit to coincide with a festival. One of the most famous, and arguably one of the best of its kind in Europe, is the Carnival. It has a bit of everything for everyone. Dive into the art and history of Sitges Your Sitges holidays will surround you with art, elegance, and history. In the late 19th century, adventurers from Sitges went to Cuba and the Americas to make their fortune. When they returned, they used these new fortunes to build beautiful homes and become patrons of the arts. This new wealth drove the change of Sitges from a traditional fishing village towards the cosmopolitan town that we know today. Even famous artists like Santiago Rusiñol and Arcadi Mas i Fondevila lived here. Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí also spent time working in Sitges. Sitges is famous for its artistic heritage and community. You can visit its wealth of art galleries, studios, and museums showcasing traditional and contemporary art from Catalonia and around the world. Two of the most beautiful museums are Maricel Museum and, next to it, Cau Ferrat Museum. WHERE TO E AT La Nansa Restaurant La Nansa Restaurante is a local Sitges restaurant that has been serving fresh, home cooked food to locals for over 50 years. The restaurant’s simple philosophy is to serve delicious, local dishes using quality ingredients. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch of traditional items including paella, stuffed cannelloni and fresh squid with perfect wine matches. restaurantlanansa.com/nova HOW TO GET THERE By car: From Barcelona is a journey of about 45 minutes by toll motorway, or along the coast road (without toll) with spectacular views. 46 Amazing Destinations I f you’re planning your first visit to Orlando, you want to make sure you’re as prepared as possible. If you’re responsible for creating the perfect trip for your family, the weight on your shoulders can feel a little heavy. But don’t worry – we’re going to help you out and relieve a little of that stress with our essential first-time guide. By Martin Mason ORLANDO MAGIC Cinderella’s Castle at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom First Visit:

Amazing Destinations 47 From the world’s best theme parks to countless restaurants and unbeatable shopping, there’s a reason Orlando is one of the most-visited destinations in the US. First time visitors will undoubtedly spend their entire holiday time on Walt Disney World’s sprawling 43 square miles — roughly the same size as San Francisco — or Universal Orlando’s expansive resort featuring three exciting theme parks. Amazing Destination’s editor Martin Mason has been visiting Orlando for more than twenty years, so he’s perfectly qualified to highlight the best that both resorts have to offer, alongside where to stay and some great dining choices to suit every budget. 48 Amazing Destinations Before you go When you’re spending and saving for the holiday of your dreams, you want to know that every penny is going toward the best possible experience for your family. The wonderful thing about Orlando is that there are many incredible theme parks to enjoy. For the most part, all of the parks offer something for every age group, but some parks may be better suited for your families particular ages than others. Before we dive into the best theme parks in Orlando, let’s be clear: This isn’t the definitive guide — for first time visitors we are only focusing on Disney and Universal because it’s a challenge to see everything they have to offer in two weeks. Orlando days are long, hot and exhausting so you may have to decide which of the parks to see on your first trip and which ones to skip or see on a future visit. There will almost certainly be another Orlando theme park that your children, parents or partner wants to visit. And the best way to help them decide is to get them involved in the process. Sea World, LEGOLand, FunSpot America, Peppa Pig World and The Kennedy Space Centre are all good options and offer uniquely different experiences, so do check them out to see if they are a good fit for your group. The kids For the children, see what looks fun and show them videos of attractions on YouTube. Also, consider what they’re currently interested in or obsessed with. Do they like Star Wars? The best Disney Park for them might be Disney’s Hollywood Studios, especially with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Watched Frozen too many times to mention? Head to EPCOT to meet Anna and Elsa in their themed outfits. Can’t get enough of Despicable Me and the minions? You’re off to Universal Studios Florida. Penguins and dolphins? Head over to SeaWorld Orlando. Regardless of the age category that your kids fall into, give serious consideration to what they are interested in. The Grown ups For the adults, consider their interests and what will bring them the most joy out of the holiday. Meeting characters and riding rollercoasters isn’t for everyone — but watching the children or grandchildren meet their favourite characters just might be the best thing ever. The best theme parks in Orlando cater to adults and seniors. And the atmosphere of a wonderfully themed land or park can be just enough “magic” for those who don’t need the thrills.

50 Amazing Destinations Planning Planning ahead is a must when considering a Disney trip. One of the first things to consider is when you want to visit. For many visitors, school holiday dates will decide when you’ll be visiting. But other factors can come into play — such as weather, crowds, and cost. The US ‘Spring break’, summertime, and Christmas, for example, are peak seasons for Disney World. This means that not only will there typically be more people there, but you can also expect to pay more and have a more difficult time finding last minute accommodations. Events Numerous events happen at Disney World that you may be interested in scheduling into your travel plans as well. Special annual events include the Taste of Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival in the spring, Easter celebrations, summer extravaganzas, and more. Each park at Walt Disney World also has a unique celebration for Halloween, Christmas, and New Year’s. The Parks There are 4 main parks to choose from — Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios. As a part of the planning phase, we recommend picking the parks you definitely want to explore during your visit. To give you a quick overview of highlights of each park: Walt Disney World encompasses more rides, attractions, dining opportunities, and entertainment options than can be counted. While it can be overwhelming for first time visitors, there’s no reason to let that steer you away from starting to plan your visit to the happiest place on earth!
