Amazing Destinations 103 Lake Como has been a popular retreat for aristocrats and the wealthy since Roman times and is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in the region of Lombardy. It’s a glamorous destination with many artistic and cultural highlights including the historic villas that decorate its coasts. It’s a destination that deserves to be seen with class and thanks to operators like Yacht Club Matteri its possible to travel back in time and cruise the lake in style. In spite of Riva’s success not many people know the history behind these iconic yachts - even though the Italian brand has been building ships for more than 170 years. It was the 1950’s when Carlo Riva was acknowledged by many for inventing, developing, drawing and creating Italian Style motorboats. Throughout the next decade Riva became widely known for the elegance of form, excellent safety features and mahogany racing boats. But it was in November 1962 that the real legend behind Riva was born: the Aquarama. Presented at the third International Nautical Fair in Milan, the yacht quickly became a symbol of Riva’s excellence. Many iconic models followed until 1970 when Riva sold the shipyard to an American company, Whittaker. A succession of companies have owned the company since, and today the firm is owned by the Ferretti Group. One person who knows more than most about this history is master shipwright Eriolario Matteri and during our recent visit to Bellagio, we were lucky enough to not only spend time with him and his wonderful family but have him take us on a guided tour of Lake Como in one of their magnificent classic Riva’s. It was a day we will remember for a long time. For four generations Erio’s family has crafted wooden boats in the same shipyard on the shores of Lake Como. Now specialising in the restoration and care of mahogany Riva speedboats, Yacht Club Matteri’s expertise and experience has them regularly featured in film and fashion. On board their Rivas they have welcomed some of the world’s most famous actors including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Demon, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston to name a few. If you want to experience Lake Como at its authentic best, Yacht Club Matteri offers an exclusive and tailor-made service. There are other boat operators serving Como, but no one delivers an experience quite like them. Their fleet of authentic luxury Riva’s include a 1954 ‘Ariston’, a 1963 ‘Super Aquarama Alma’ and a 1970 ‘Aqurama Special’. The boat chosen for our trip was a Riva ‘Tritone Engfalls’. A symbol of elegance and perfection since the 1950s, and the first of its kind, it was Riva shipyards’ most successful model. The boat’s speed, beauty, and craftsmanship earned it praise as the Ferrari of the boat world and this painstakingly restored example looked every bit as stunning as would have on its maiden voyage. Collecting us from our dock at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Erio took us on an unforgettable two-hour tour of Como’s basin and the centre of the Lake. As we sat back living our best life, we cruised past the famous Villas that line the banks of Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Laglio and Torn including Villa Le Fontanelle: once home to Versace, Villa Pliniana and one of the most famous lake houses in the world, Villa Oleandra owned by Como resident, George Clooney.
104 Amazing Destinations Villa Balbianello, Lake Como
Amazing Destinations 105 Villa Oleandra, Lake Como Cruising past Como city we admired Villa Olmo, an imposing neoclassical villa, dating back to 1782 which was the historic mansion of Napoleon. Continuing northwards, there’s Villa d’Este, one of the most famous 5-star hotels on the lake and today the site of the famous Concours d’Élégance famous for its classic cars. Heading to Tremezzo, in the small town of Lenno, stands Villa Balbianello where some scenes of “Star Wars: Episode II” and “007 Casino Royale” were shot. Yacht Club Matteri offer a range of expert itineraries for you to choose from, or you can contact them to discuss a tailored adventure. They offer a range of boarding and landing points, and food and drink options can be added. They will even take you to the coolest and calming swimming spots for a quick dip in the lake’s crystal-clear waters. Back at the yacht club, Erio and his family treated us to lunch and gave us a tour of their new private deck, a lakeside meeting place where you can fully enjoy the Riva Yacht Experience. Afterwards, we toured the boatyard and Erio explains how keeping the Riva brand alive is his passion. “Boats always mean trouble, but I can’t imagine a life without that’ he says. “Rivas are like pieces of art, and I am fulfilled by restoring them. When I start a Riva engine, it’s like music to my ears”. It’s a privilege to witness such passion and dedication and enjoy the hospitality of such a wonderful family. A Lake Como boat tour on board this boat has been an unforgettable experience for us, and it will be for you too. These luxury tours are bucket list fulfilment and will literally leave you speechless. 108 Amazing Destinations Tucked away within a charming cul-de-sac just a stone’s throw away from Buckingham Palace and the shopping sanctums of Jermyn Street and the Burlington Arcade, sits the St James’s Hotel and Club, a very special 5-Star Boutique Hotel. MAYFAIR, LONDON With a storied history dating back to 1857, St. James’s Hotel and Club can boast a guest list of figures such as Winston Churchill, Henry James, and Ian Fleming, initially as a gentlemen’s club and now as a prestigious five-star hotel. The hotel is close to Green Park, and the well-heeled area of Mayfair and just 11 minutes walk from Piccadilly Circus. Some of London’s longest-running shops, such as Berry Brothers & Rudd and perfumer Floris, are a five-minute walk. This is quintessentially an English Town House hotel with a grand, yet somewhat understated interior. With 60 rooms, it’s large enough to offer a comprehensive range of services and yet small enough to remain a ’boutique’ offering. ROOMS The 60 rooms feature a subtle palette, accented with greens and golds, and black lacquered furniture along with Murano glass chandeliers and silk wallpaper. Bathrooms come in cream and black stone and are stocked with Penhaligon’s products. Our delightful ‘Westminster’ Suite included a generous rooftop terrace with rattan furniture and breathtaking views across the city. It also boasted a large lounge and bathroom with separate walk-in showers with bath-side television. FOOD The fine dining restaurant Seven Park Place, run by long-standing chef William Drabble, serves exquisite French food using British ingredients in an intimate dining room. It’s a gorgeous, intimate experience with tastefully muralled walls and seats to nestle into. We were served the seven-course menu gourmand which included artistic amuse bouchées, griddled scallops and a langoustine consommé with black winter truffle. A delightful main of roasted breast of duck with picked pear and duck jus was only top trumped by the double cooked stilton souffle which followed. Each course was orchestrally served, and the sommelier matched each dish with a chosen wine that was both passionately explained. “ Our verdict This is a super luxurious Mayfair hideaway with magnificent rooftop suites and an outstanding Michelinstarred restaurant. The hotel’s history, its immediate surroundings and its overall outstanding guest experience make the St James’s Hotel a very special luxury hotel. ” Tucked away within a charming cul-de-sac just a stone’s throw away from Buckingham Palace and the shopping sanctums of Jermyn Street and the Burlington Arcade, sits the St James’s Hotel and Club, a very special 5-Star Boutique Hotel. Amazing Destinations 111 Located in the glamorous Mayfair, this is one of the Capital’s most desirable addresses, with the West End and Knightsbridge just a short stroll away. Grosvenor House is one of London’s most established, but also its biggest five-star hotels. JW MARRIOTT GROSVENOR HOUSE MAYFAIR LONDON 111 Partly designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, and opened in 1929, it was always intended to operate on a grand scale. Marriott International completed a multi-million dollar renovation of the property last year and the ground floor has been reimagined to complement the alluring views of Hyde Park, with décor including butterfly wall art and bespoke carpets, and redesigned guest rooms. The hotel’s originally lobby fireplace has also been transformed, with floorto-ceiling glass connecting the lobby entrance to the property’s beautiful Park Room, where Afternoon Tea is served. Rooms The recent restoration has added modern touches without losing the iconic details of the building’s past. Each of the bedrooms and suites is furnished with luxury fabrics and a subtle blend of traditional and contemporary furnishings. All rooms have the essential comforts including individual climate control, satellite TV and high-speed internet. Our wonderful suite offered three separate rooms, expensive marbles, fresh flowers, and a stunning view overlooking Hyde Park. It represented the idyllic marriage between the old and modern characters of the hotel. Food We dined in the hotel’s main restaurant, the upmarket JW Steakhouse – with its impressive line-up of USDA-grade filets, New York strips and bone-in Kansas City strips alongside various cuts of Aberdeen Angus. While beef is the star, the menu also offers a wide array of authentically prepared dishes including true Maryland-style lump crab cakes, line-caught cod fish and chips and pan-seared Scottish salmon. Don’t miss the Bourbon Bar which offers over 300 rare, pre-prohibition, single barrel and small batch Bourbons and knowledgeable bartenders to help choose your tipple. Food and drink options are all first class, while the flawless service one of our favourite hotels in the capital and is highly recommended for a special occasion. will leave you feeling like royalty during your stay. It remains While the Hotel is a very British institution, the original design of the hotel was intended specifically to cater to the American market. The architect L. Rome Guthrie designed the building to be built in four staggered blocks. But his elevations were deemed fairly dull, so Sir Edwin Lutyens, was called in to improve them in 1929 and did so by adding crowning pavilions and revising the elevations which have great finesse, with the windows rising in diminishing sizes. Today it retains that swagger and is a Park Lane institution that looms over Hyde Park. Completing an extensive fouryear renovation in 2019, the property offers unrivalled luxury, super service and excellent facilities to provide a one-of-a-kind hotel experience. ROOMS Each of the 496 bedrooms (including 730) suites is furnished with luxury fabrics and a subtle blend of traditional and contemporary furnishings. By Martin Ma LONDON As The Landmark London is located directly opposite Marylebone Station and just a few minutes from Baker Street, it’s perfectly placed for exploring the capital. Originally a railway hotel servicing Marylebone station in 1899, this grandest of dames has played many roles in its lifespan, from a convalescent home during World War II to headquarters of the British Railways Board, until it opened under its current name in 1995. Much of the 300-room hotel harks back to the Victorian era with classic styling and stunning original marble gracing the walls of one of the reception rooms. The main entrance is beautiful and large floral displays provoke the senses. Arched ceilings, wood paneled walls and a wide staircase lead to the hotel’s stunning centerpiece – The Winter Garden restaurant. This looks, feels and smells of luxury. The hotel also has an incredible spa - this is located on the basement floor. As well as a large heated indoor pool, there is a state-of-the-art gym, Jacuzzi and samarium and a steam room in the changing rooms. “ Our verdict The capital certainly isn’t short of five-st accommodations, but The Landmark Lo entirely unique. Grand yet cosy; tradition yet quiet; this glamorous spot really has the top of your London hotel wish list. ROOMS There are a total of 300 rooms including 51 suites, these are located across five floors of the hotel and either face outwards or into the huge glass roofed atrium. After a recent refurb, the rooms and suites feel refreshed but remain classic in style. Our suite was spacious with a separate living room and bedroom and quality furnishing throughout. The king-size bed was super comfy, and all mod cons were featured, including Smart TV, Nespresso machine and good WiFi. The white marble bathrooms had a separate shower and bath, double sinks and Molton Brown products. FOOD Stepping up the marble steps leading to the Winter Garden Restaurant, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’d left London entirely for the Mediterranean. Set in an eight-storey glass atrium, the open-plan restaurant is home to soaring palm trees and a view of the open sky, it remains one of our favourite hotel restaurants in the capital. The menu here consists of modern European classics presented with a tantalising twist. After a glass of bubbles, we enjoyed starters of Cornish white crab meat and twice baked Kentish blue cheese souffle. Mains came from the charcoal grill and the Hereford prime rib-eye steaks were well prepared and delicious. Highlights amongst the desserts was a plum and ginger crumble with oat milk ice cream and custard. There’s an extensive wine menu and service is impeccable. It’s close to the Embankment, Westminster and Covent Garden and with first class service and outstanding bars and restaurants, it would be a crime not to add this to your London wish list. ” The Great Scotland Yard Hotel has the perfect central London location and is within walking distance of a significant number of key attractions, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Whitehall and the West End. It opened in 2019, although it elegant styling makes it feel brand new. As the name suggests, it is located in a Grade II building that was the headquarters for the Metropolitan Police in the 1820’s. It allegedly served as inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock novels which is why the hotel has a distinctly Victorian inspired decor. Leaning heavily on its police heritage – uniforms, batons, handcuffs, historical evidence and more than a few nods to famous criminals abound. This is balanced by outstanding artworks courtesy of contemporary artists such as Nicola Green, Cornelia Parker and Piers Bourke. ROOMS Stylish guest rooms have neutral colours and natural lighting with blue veneered nightstands. They incorporate the police theme with prison floorplans adorning the walls and carpet that integrates badges and police uniforms in the design. All mod cons are featured including minibar, Nespresso, flat screen TV and good WiFi. Fortunately, the signature cocktails we tried lived up to the high concept. The fine dining restaurant Ekstedt at The Yard brings Michelin starred chef Niklas Ekstedt's signature style of wood fired ‘old Nordic’ cooking to the UK for the very first time and focuses on Scandinavian cuisine. We dined in Cecconi's City of London Italian with a menu that’s familiar to anyone who has eaten in their sister Mayfair restaurant. Think chicchetti, tartares, carpaccios as well as indulgent Italian staples. Highlights included a tasty starter of Octopus salad with tomatoes, olives and celery and a creamy Burrata with datterini tomatoes and basil. Our main choices of Spaghetti with lobster, tomato and chilli and Veal Milanese, with lemon salt and sage were well prepared and equally delicious. Service was friendly and the sommelier’s wine pairings were a good match with each course. In a lively and eclectic setting, the broad bar menu here offered up a tasty wet aged sirloin steak and hearty braised lamb shepherd’s pie. With the bustling shopping streets and cosy pub corners of Richmond on its doorstep, and central London just a tube ride away. By James Glover RICHMOND HILL HOTEL RICHMOND, LONDON The recently renovated Richmond Hill Hotel offers up the perfect staycation for anyone looking to escape the city. There’s plenty to do in Richmond itself: explore 2,500 acres of parkland with roaming deer in London’s largest Royal Park, take a boat tour to Kew Gardens or Hampton Court, hire a rowing boat or bicycle, and enjoy shops, markets and walks galore. Nearby attractions include Twickenham rugby ground and museum, Ham House and London Wetland Centre. ROOMS The hotel has two types of rooms, Georgian collection and Hill collection. The Georgian collection has antique interiors and reflects the history & heritage of the hotel, whereas the Hill collection has a more modern approach to it with bright colours. Our spacious and classy suite featured ultra-comfy super-kingsized beds from Heal’s of London, goose down duvets, Nespresso machine, and marble-tiled bathroom with heavenly walk-in rain shower. FOOD Dinner at the award-winning AA Rosette, 144 On The Hill was the highlight of our stay. The long wraparound bar spans the room and is rather spectacular – worth going for just a drink. A lively atmosphere was complemented by a wonderfully chilled Chapel Down brut and the Wine list was surprisingly varied and reasonably priced. From a well-balanced menu we chose the classic pairing of scallops and steak which was delicious. Make sure you’re up in time to have breakfast the next day, another high point. There’s a good range of hot and cold options but our pancakes took some beating. Our verdict If you want a break from the usual rush-hour routine of city life, then this 18th -century townhouse is a wonderful staycation choice. Amazing Destinations 129 For those who are interested in exploring a little further, however, Tenerife is a beautiful spot to witness the raw power of nature with extraordinary beauty and diversity, hiking, black sand beaches, lush forest, and even snow on the summit of Mt. Teide. Tenerife is famed for its reasonable year-round climate, which is generally a constant 25 degrees, and as such, is a popular holiday destination all year round for UK holidaymakers, The peak season is from December to February, when the island is swamped by snowbirds from Northern Europe, but most younger groups head here for the hotter months from April to September. In south Tenerife, attractions are concentrated in the Playa de las Americas area, while the north of the island is served by Puerto de la Cruz. Playa de las Americas is Tenerife’s most popular resort for a reason; it’s a true mecca for visitors who come to the island not only to lay in the sun all day, but to experience a party atmosphere all night long. By night One of the most popular nightlife destinations in Playa de las Americas is Veronica’s Strip. This area is packed with bars and clubs, offering everything from live music to karaoke to dancing. Some of the most popular we visited were Tramps and Jumping Jacks. Another popular hangout is the Patch. This area is located near the Safari Shopping Centre located on the Avenida Las Americas Num 5, it is home to a range of bars and clubs. Some of the most popular venues include Temple Bar, Yates’s, and The Dubliner. For a good night we started at the Hard Rock Cafe located at the Piramide de Arona. There is always great live music, nice food, and a rock-filled atmosphere all washed down with a good range of cocktails and drinks. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a night out with friends or family (see review). The Starco Commercial Centre offers a more laid-back night out. Here, you will find several bars and restaurants, offering a range of local food and entertainment options. Some of the most popular venues include the Monkey Beach Club (see review) Linekers Bar, and the Wigan Pier. By day For the energetic, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports and beach activities in Playa de las Americas. One of the most popular water sports in Tenerife is surfing. For complete beginners, you can learn how to ride the waves with professional instructors at one of the many surf schools in the area. You can also rent surfboards and wetsuits and enjoy the surf spots along the coast. If you prefer to explore the underwater world, you can try scuba diving or snorkelling with one of the dive centres in Playa de las Americas, a great way to discover the underwater landscapes, colourful fish, coral reefs and even turtles and dolphins in the clear waters of Tenerife. Another way to enjoy the water and have fun is by taking a private boat tour or a dolphin and whale watching excursion. We chose the island’s experts, Tenerife First Excursions for this option and a review follows. Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, located off West Africa and is dominated by Mt. Teide, a dormant volcano that is actually Spain’s tallest peak. Served by two airports, post pandemic tourism is booming here, and there is a unique mix of stunning sandy beaches, all-inclusive resorts and all-night clubbing on offer.
130 Amazing Destinations All Aboard One of Tenerife’s greatest attractions is undoubtedly its crystalline waters and the opportunity to sail through the ocean watching the whales, dolphins and turtles should be too much to resist for any visitor. Tenerife First Excursions are the island’s water adventure experts, and they took us on a private boat trip that was both thrilling and unforgettable. By Holly Cannon
Pods of short-finned pilot whales and playful families of bottlenose dolphins are commonly spotted here and other species including humpbacks, sei and even blue whales can be seen during the peak whale-watching months. Witnessing these creatures play in their natural environment can be incredibly fulfilling and whilst the crew of our private boat charter were making no promises, we had our fingers crossed of a sighting. There’s no doubt that the best and safest way to enjoy Tenerife’s waters and witness the marine life is to take a boat tour with a trusted operator like Tenerife First Excursions. Daniel, Mattie and their team of operators have more than ten years’ experience of managing water adventures in the Canary Islands including charters, sports and diving. Their aim is to provide memorable bespoke experiences with a focus on fun, freedom and safety. Our smart all-inclusive private yacht accommodated ten people and departed from Puerto Colon in Costa Adeje. It is a local harbour easily accessible from Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas, near the beautiful Playa La Pinta and Playa Torviscas. Boarding was simple, and we quickly set sail on a relaxed cruise lasting three hours. During the journey we witnessed the beautiful views of Costa Adeje and Playa Paraiso and whilst some of our party sunned themselves on the deck, others dangled their legs overboard and let the ocean spray cool us down. The highlight of our tour was seeing lots of dolphins and a pod of whales and its undoubtedly one of our best memories from our trip to Tenerife. The crew informed us that on every tour they offer there’s a pretty high chance you’ll get a sighting. Between the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera, the seafloor can reach 2,000 m below the surface, which allows the Bottlenose Dolphins and Short-finned Pilot Whales to hunt large amounts of fish and their favourite treat: giant squids. Thereby, these two species can be found lurking around all year long. This is an exceptional reason to go dolphin and whale watching in Tenerife any time of the year. Halfway through the trip, the boat anchored in Spaghetti Bay by El Puertito to serve food and drink. This is included in the private tour price, and you can choose from sandwich, sushi or salad. Everything we were served was fresh and delicious and there’s nothing quite like the sound of lapping water and fizzing bubbles to let you know you’re having a great time. At this point we were invited to jump off the boat for a snorkel and equipment was supplied. Five different species of sea turtle call the waters around Tenerife their home and whilst we didn’t see any on our dive, we did see lots of fabulous fish and fauna. The crew were first class, engaging, informative and attentive at all times and nothing was too much trouble, including the obligatory group photo. Our verdict Whale-watching tours are very popular in Tenerife and a lot of operators offer this excursion. It is important to make sure you choose the right company who offer experience and expertise. Look no further than Tenerife First Excursions who will ensure that you have a safe and memorable experience. They can also help with a range of water sports and adventures including diving, jet skis and parascending. Visit tenerifefirstexcursions.com or email [email protected] Home to a nutrient-rich marine environment, the 772-square-mile stretch of sea between the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera is one of the world’s most revered whale-watching regions.

LUXURY FEATURES The hotel itself is an ultra-modern, expansive property and is one of the latest top hotels to grace the fancy Costa Adeje strip in the south of the island. A unique array of luxury features, impeccable service and huge suite rooms are establishing the GF Victoria as the place to stay for families, couples and groups looking for an unforgettable break on Tenerife. The sleek, and somewhat futuristic Zambra Skybar terrace features a stylish bar and comfy lounge areas, but the prime feature is the instaworthy glass hanging pool. Swim out over the edge, surrounded by panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean and Costa Adeje. COCKTAILS The cocktail menu stands out for its creativity, and we’re told its mixologists are on their way to turning the Zambra Skybar into the cocktail destination in Tenerife. We can’t argue with that as all the drinks we tried were wonderful, as were a selection of accompanying small plate bites. ZAMBRA SKY BAR COSTA ADEJE, TENERIFE

They make travelling within the city centre and suburbs easy. The hotel is impressive from your first step inside, featuring low level lighting, elegant décor, smartly dressed staff and a welcoming atmosphere. It is stylish throughout and it’s increasingly obvious that a lot of time and attention has been spent on the interiors, which reflect the brand very well. When we arrived, the famous Manchester rain was bucketing down but we were greeted warmly, offered a drink and shown to our room. Rooms You'll want to spend time in the Dakotas rooms with their calming grey colour scheme and luxurious fabrics. Our suite was impressive featuring elegant corner space with plenty of homely comforts and views of the city. All mod cons were represented including smart TV and super-fast WIFI, a super-king size bed, and beautiful en suite with marble topped bath and separate rainfall shower. Food The Dakota Bar and Grill showcases quality, seasonal produce at its best. Theres’s originality and a wide choice of dishes on the menu and the cocktail list is equally intriguing with concoctions headed by famous quotes on life. The grill is the specialty here and there’s an extensive range of steaks which are grass-fed, 35-day aged and UK-bred. We opted for the Chateaubriand, which was well seasoned and cooked perfectly and delicious. Super crunchy truffle chips and a tasty side of shortrib mac & cheese left no room for a dessert. Service was excellent and the Primitivo Anniversario 62 was a good match choice from an impressive wine menu. “ Our verdict A stylish and sexy contemporary hot NorthernQuarterSpaciousroomsan Sleek, sexy and stylish, this boutique hotel with the Northern Quarter and Spinningfields in walking distance is the perfect setting for a luxury Manchester stay.
